As mentioned above, the Top 3 (though I think it'll be only the Top 2) films are too close to one another to accurately call which film ranked #1 for the weekend. Either Evergreen Love or Zootopia do appear to have taken the top spot. If it's the former, it'll have done so without ranking higher than third place over the weekend since opening. And if it's the latter, then it will have reclaimed the top spot in its ninth weekend in release - a very impressive feat.

Sadako vs. Kayako actually performed very well on Sunday and will end up with a respectable debut (which could still be a fourth place start). The opening is notable higher than the last entries in The Ring and The Grudge series from the past couple years, but I'll wait until actuals to post how this showdown between the two horror icons compares to their own series' most recent opening weekends.

Creepy opened with a mediocre number as expected. If it comes in above ¥100 million, though, I figure it'll be seen as a "success" given the somewhat low screen count (256) and what's generally a poor time of the year for the box office. June is a traditional dumping ground.

Mars on the other hand performed quite terribly. Its pre-sales alone (boosted by stage greetings) represented ~40% of its weekend admissions, and as a result, it dropped over 50% on Sunday.

Post Re: Japan Box Office: Weekend Estimates (06/18-19)
I don't have time in the morning to put together weekend actuals, so until I post them around the usual time later this evening, check out how this weekend played out:

Admissions
01. Evergreen Love (reclaiming the #1 spot in its third week)
02. 64: Part 2
03. Zootopia
04. Sadako vs. Kayako

Gross
01. Zootopia (reclaiming the #1 spot in its ninth week)
02. Sadako vs. Kayako
03. Evergreen Love
04. 64: Part 2

Talk about discrepancy. :P

Actuals will be posted later this evening.

Sorry for the delay with weekend actuals. I was busy yesterday evening. They'll be up in an hour or so, followed by the usual updates, though!

The Top 3 films were only separated by 0.85% in gross - gotta be a record.

Thanks, corpse. You're so regular with your posts that I would have been actually worried if you didn't have something today. :)

06 (---) ¥127,289,200 ($1.22 million), 0, ¥127,289,200 ($1.22 million), Creepy (Shochiku) NEW
07 (05) ¥81,011,700 ($779,000), -34%, ¥980,510,000 ($9.1 million), Wolf Girl and Black Prince (Warner Bros.) WK4
08 (---) ¥79,039,600 ($760,000), 0, ¥79,039,600 ($760,000), Mars (Showgate) NEW
09 (06) ¥48,353,900 ($465,000), -32%, ¥1,735,574,400 ($16.2 million), 64: Part 1 (Toho) WK7
10 (07) ¥42,161,600 ($405,000), -39%, ¥407,568,400 ($3.8 million), The Kodai Family (Toho) WK3

An incredibly close race for the #1 position this weekend, but Zootopia managed to come out on top; reclaiming the #1 spot, its fifth #1 ranking overall, in its ninth weekend of release. After nine weeks in release, Disney's blockbuster has exceeded 5.3 million admissions, and has brought its running multiplier up to a massive 15.49. It has begun to lose some momentum (even though it's back on top), so a final total around ¥8 billion (~$75 million) and 6 million admissions seems to be the goal.

Sadako vs. Kayako makes a surprising debut in second place, and nearly took the #1 spot. The horror film pitting the horror icons from the popular Ring and Grudge franchises sold 140,581 admissions over the weekend across 352 screens. This debut is 154% ahead of last year's final Grudge film; 24% ahead of Sadako 3D2 (from The Ring franchise); though fell short 19% of the first Sadako 3D. Overall, a solid weekend indeed, and it just might be able to reach the ¥1 billion ($9/10 million) milestone.

Creepy missed the Top 5, though it managed to come in comfortably above the ¥100 million mark, which isn't too bad for a June release. The live-action adaptation of the the award-winning mystery novel, and starring Hidetoshi Nishijima, sold 96,394 admissions on 256 screens.

Mars is a pretty big disappointment, selling just 59,206 admissions on 197 screens in its debut. It was also notable frontloaded over the weekend with pre-sales accounting for ~25% of its weekend admissions, and it also experienced a Sunday decline over 50%.

Post Re: Japan Box Office: Biggest Ninth Weekends
Biggest Ninth Weekends/Nine Week Totals -> Final Totals (2001-)

¥737.8 million (-34%) [1st] / ¥17.08 billion -> ¥25.48 billion - Frozen (2014)
¥650.0 million (-07%) [1st] / ¥19.98 billion -> ¥30.40 billion - Spirited Away (2001)
¥419.2 million (+21%) [1st] / ¥10.47 billion -> ¥13.70 billion - The Last Samurai (2003)
¥404.7 million (-20%) [1st] / ¥11.87 billion -> ¥15.60 billion - Avatar (2009)
¥377.4 million (-11%) [1st] / ¥15.27 billion -> ¥17.35 billion - Bayside Shakedown: Save the Rainbow Bridge! (2003)
¥343.5 million (-45%) [1st] / ¥15.76 billion -> ¥19.60 billion - Howl's Moving Castle (2004)
¥324.9 million (-29%) [2nd] / ¥10.62 billion -> ¥12.02 billion - The Wind Rises (2013)
¥296.5 million (-31%) [2nd] / ¥17.89 billion -> ¥20.30 billion - Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone (2001)
¥278.1 million (-45%) [1st] / ¥15.23 billion -> ¥17.30 billion - Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (2002)
¥259.9 million (-31%) [3rd] / ¥13.88 billion -> ¥15.50 billion - Ponyo (2008)
¥214.9 million (-11%) [2nd] / ¥10.29 billion -> ¥11.00 billion - Finding Nemo (2003)
¥201.2 million (-51%) [3rd] / ¥11.92 billion -> ¥13.50 billion - Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (2004)
¥200.3 million (-30%) [1st] / ¥6.91 billion -> ¥?.?? billion - Zootopia (2016)

¥200 million+

Zootopia has really joined an elusive list here (even if just barely) and it's such the oddball out, and quite the unique entry - demonstrating how incredible its run at the box office has been thus far.

All of the other films on the list are above the uber-blockbuster milestone of ¥10 billion (some way above) after their ninth weekends, a milestone that Zootopia isn't going to quite achieve (it's targeting a final total of ~¥8 billion). Also, all of the other films on the list are in the Top 20 films of all-time (8 are in the Top 10 films of all-time). By comparison, Zootopia will end up somewhere between 54-59 on the all-time list.

And added to this week's update, I included each individual film's ninth weekend ranking in brackets [ ].

Any thoughts as to Dory's gross potential?

It's basically the summer film to see this year for families and general audiences. There are many tentpoles on the July/August schedule, as there is every year, but the majority of them this year are... lacking in broad appeal.

Monsters University came within 10% of reaching Monsters, Inc. in ticket sales and gross, and Finding Dory has a lot more going for it: Less direct competition; a better release date (the start of Summer vacation versus the week before = stronger legs); and it'll be arriving in Japan backed by strong international success.

I'd say Dory's chances of exceeding ¥10 billion are high, and I wouldn't be too surprised if it manages to outgross Finding Nemo.

The only negative I can think of is that the Pixar brand isn't what it used to be in the market now that Disney Animation is releasing grade-A, and arguably better, films: Frozen, Big Hero 6, and currently Zootopia have blown Pixar's releases this decade out of the water.

Is there a reason why box office mojo's data doesn't seem to match the other sources?

http://www.boxofficemojo.com/intl/japan ... cal&p=.htm

I know that their Zootopia yen cumulative total is incorrect.

Short Answer: It's BOM. They're unreliable with international figures. Use them as a last resort, and even then, have your finger on that asterisk key.

Long Answer: I'm guessing it's some exchange rate/conversion issue - their biggest problem. Although, their numbers still don't add up. They have it down 28% this past weekend, when their weekend number is actually down 32% from their weekend number last weekend (it's actually down 30%).

Hey, Corpse, how come mimorin2014 accounts for fewer tickets for Hollywood movies than Japanese movies? Do big American blockbusters have big shows outside of the surveyed chains?

It's not necessarily that, but that does play a role. Major Hollywood films end up with more theaters/screens than Japanese films in most cases because theaters have to provide showings in various formats (subtitled, dubbed, 3D, IMAX, 4DX, etc.). That means there's generally more unaccounted for theaters in the rural areas of the country (the north and south) for Hollywood films.

The vast majority of Japanese films are only shown in a single format (regular 2D).

Too Young To Die! is positioned to lead a weak box office weekend before Summer's tentpoles begin to roll-out starting next week.

Starring Ryunosuke Kamiki and Tomoya Nagase, the fantasy comedy is about a high school student who dies in a bus accident, later waking up in Hell regretting that he never confessed his feelings to his crush. So in order to return to the living world, Kamiki must perform with Hell's Agricultural High School rock band, Heruzu, where he gains special training from the group's leader, Killer K (Nagase).

The film was originally scheduled for February, but was delayed four months. Pre-sales are decent and suggest an opening around ¥200 million or a bit better, which should be enough to debut atop the box office.

Why do most Japanese manga and movies start these days with titular character dying and experiencing something after that? Its like they are pointing out that death is better somehow :P

Too Young To Die! wins Saturday by a comfortable enough margin that it should have the #1 debut secured, and is still on target for an opening of ¥200 million or slightly higher.

Zootopia is heading for a superb tenth weekend hold, possibly in the single digits if Sunday delivers (it usually does). Since it's continuing to post solid numbers, and has maintained a weekend ranking in either first or second place since opening, it'll be interesting to see how Disney and theaters handle it next weekend when Alice Through the Looking Glass opens.

In the past whenever the next big Disney film releases (excluding Marvel; they have little presence in the market), the one that's currently in release suffers severe screen/showtime cuts to provide the new film with ample screenings. I don't know if they'll decide to cut Zootopia's legs short next week as a result, or if they'll wait until Finding Dory opens in a couple weeks later to do it then.

Mobile Suit Gundam Thunderbolt - December Sky certainly isn't making the Top 10 with those admissions (which are down considerably compared to the recent Gundam Origins films).

Sunday was a little subdued this week compared to most weeks, so weekend drops ended up being a little higher.

Too Young To Die! definitely won the weekend, and likely debuted above ¥200 million.

Weekend Estimates will be posted shortly.

A typically slow, boring June weekend ahead of the Summer Box Office Season.

Too Young To Die! appears to have opened above ¥200 million, and while that's not much, it's enough to debut atop the box office and isn't too bad for a June release, honestly.

Beyond that... bring on July/August.

Overall, this June hasn't been too bad. It's traditionally a dumping ground, and this year's will end up with potentially five ¥1 billion earners: Deadpool (done), Evergreen Love (done), 64: Part 2 (done), Sadako vs. Kayako (maybe), and Too Young To Die! (maybe). Also, Deadpool's going to clear the ¥2 billion mark (notably impressive for June), and Evergreen Love might reach the milestone as well.

It's outgrossed all of the X-Men films already, as of this past weekend, except for the first X-Men film, which it'll surpass on Wednesday, most likely.

Also, I've been having some issues loading WOKJ the past couple days. I'll attempt to post the Weekend Actuals and Yearly Charts again this evening, though.

>Too Young To Die! takes the top spot in its debut, selling a solid 188,028 admissions across 288 screens over the weekend.

The film enjoyed a fair debut, especially for an opener in the month of June, and is very likely to exceed the ¥1 billion ($10 million) milestone.

>Zootopia falls to second place after recapturing the top spot last weekend, but continues to post very impressive numbers at this stage of its release. A second place ranking, and a weekend easily above ¥100 million, is very impressive for any film in its tenth week of release.

And after its tenth weekend of release, Disney's breakout blockbuster has exceeded 5.5 million admissions and is still on track to sell around 6 million. It has also exceeded the ¥7 billion milestone, and as long as it survives the upcoming summer competition, it's still on course to exceed the ¥8 billion ($75 million) milestone.

>Deadpool is still hanging on well, particularly well for a superhero film, and overtook X2: X-Men United to become the second-highest grossing film in the X-Men universe. It only needs to exceed ¥1.85 billion now to outgross the original X-Men, which it'll do well before next weekend.

>The Worst Bad Guys in Japan only manages an eighth place debut, selling 51,950 tickets over the weekend on 178 screens. Toei's ongoing struggle to produce a hit live-action film continues, and the low screen count suggests they've begun to realize their limitations in the genre.
