So SPIRITED AWAY crossed the 24m admissions mark and PRINCESS MONONOKE crossed the 20b Yen mark...

Indeed. Spirited Away is #1 on the both the all-time highest grossing and all-time admissions chart, but Princess Mononoke is shaking things up with its re-release on the earnings chart:

Princess Mononoke surpassed Howl's Moving Castle on the all-time highest grossing films chart to become the #6 biggest film. And if its re-release earns ¥300 million more (exactly) from this past Sunday, it'll surpass Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone on the all-time highest grossing film chart to enter the Top 5. Probably a 50/50 chance right now, depending on how it holds up with new movies being released now. It'll still be ranked behind both films in admissions though.

Well seeing as how both From Today, It's My Turn and The Confidence Man JP: Episode of the Princess opened very well, both meeting and/or exceeding expectations even if they had debuted under normal circumstances, I have a good feeling about Doraemon and believe it'll perform inline with past films.

Doraemon, and Onward two weeks later, will be great indicators for how family/children films will perform in these times. From Today, It's My Turn and The Confidence Man JP: Episode of the Princess have shown that films targeting young adults up to senior audiences can succeed (easily) right now, so we'll have to see what more younger skewing releases are capable of now.

11 (09) ¥x7,186,400 ($x68,000), -45%, ¥x50,276,700 ($0.05 million), 47 Meters Down: Uncaged (Gaga) WK2

Note: Warner Bros. is reporting Dunkirk's re-release figures into its former cumulative total from 2017, not separate.

A slower weekend due to no wide openers, besides the re-release of Dunkirk (and it was barely wide), but that's also pretty normal for the pre-Obon Festival weekend in many past years. Every weekend for the remainder of August has one or more very wide release, so look for August to deliver.

>From Today, It's My Turn! achieved its third-consecutive weekend atop the box-office, selling an additional 231,000 admissions to bring its 17-day admissions above 2 million at 2.08 million. The film slowed down a little, but continues to put up very impressive numbers. At its current pace, and accounting for the Obon Festival holiday period next week, it's on track to reach the ¥4 billion ($35-40 million) milestone. But if it can really deliver over the upcoming holiday period due to fewer blockbusters in release/releasing compared to past years, it might be able to that ¥5 billion ($45 million+) blockbuster milestone back in play.

>The Confidence Man JP: Episode of the Princess held well in second place, selling 189,000 admissions in its sophomore frame, bringing its 11-day admissions up to 1.13 million. I expect the film to play very well over the Obon Festival holiday frame, certainly being the #1 choice among adult/older audiences, and expect it to exceed the ¥3 billion ($25-30 million) milestone. Remember, the film opened higher than its predecessor last weekend and is very likely to outgross it as well. Very impressive given the circumstances.

>The three Hayao Miyazaki re-releases are still chugging along nicely. However, this could be their last week to post respectable figures since every weekend moving forward has one or more very wide openers, which will take the screens/showtimes they've been able to take advantage of. Still, the Obon Festival holiday period should be good to them, so both Spirited Away and Princess Mononoke may still have that ¥1 billion (~$10 million) milestone in their futures.

Next weekend sees the release of the previously postponed Doraemon: Nobita's New Dinosaur, so look for it to provide the box-office a significant boost. If audiences come out for it like they do every single year, it could have the biggest opening weekend of 2020 so far.

I wonder why Howl's Moving Castle wasn't re-released to get it over ¥20 billion as well.

I'm sure re-releasing more Hayao Miyazaki/Studio Ghibli films was/will be discussed for a later date given the success of the selected films playing now. They really helped the box-office stay afloat in late-June/early-July before new films began being released again.

Unsurprisingly, but reassuringly, Doraemon: Nobita's New Dinosaur, the 40th film in the Doraemon film franchise, is doing very well Friday morning. I have little doubt it's going to perform on a comparable level as its recent predecessors over the weekend. Biggest Opening Weekend of 2020 (so far) is likely.

A new Doraemon film had previously opened the first weekend of March every year since 1980, but this year's film was postponed to this weekend due to COVID-19.

Corpse, how was doraemon's performance today, was it good enough or was it really bad? Because after morning sales it was just dragging.

Doraemon is pretty exclusively a family/very young children franchise, so the vast majority of its sales occur before 3PM and it doesn't usually have any showings (aside from maybe in Shinjuku or Shibuya) after 7PM, especially after the first week. The same is true for other long-running annual film franchises like Pokemon and Crayon Shin-chan that skew almost exclusively toward families/very young children. And when I say young children, I'm talking about elementary school-aged children or younger (under 10).

This year's Doraemon performed around 75/80% better than last year's if we compare their Friday admissions.

But it's very unfair to compare its Friday to past Doraemon films due to the August release though. Schools are in session in March when the films have always opened, so the films that have opened on Friday don't post big numbers until the weekend begins (Saturday, Sunday). Schools are out in August, so naturally, this year's film had a much bigger Friday. We'll need to wait and see what happens on Saturday and Sunday.

It was really a bad decision taken by Toho to release Doraemon during this pandemic. No parent would take such a risk to take their children to theatres during this pandemic. Now see, this year's doraemon film would be having one of the lowest opening weekend in this franchise.

I wouldn't say all that.

The biggest hindrance I'm seeing is simply the theater capacity restrictions right now. All of the film's showtimes hit well over 50% capacity, probably even closer to 60-65%, at the needed locations, so audiences are definitely coming out to see it. However, the busiest theaters in the heavier populated prefectures have restrictions in place which limits the number of occupants per showing which is going to limit the opening.

Here is just one example, the popular Ebina Toho Cinema location (every other seat is basically unavailable): https://hlo.tohotheater.jp/net/schedule ... 2000J01.do

If you click on there, you'll see that Doraemon has already sold over 50% of its available tickets for Sunday (still 10 hours from the first showing beginning), even as late as 9PM(!). The problem though is that each showing has fewer seats available than usual due to the capacity restrictions in place there. There are many locations like this.

What's going to happen, I believe, with big films like this is that their opening weekends are simply going to be limited to a certain number because of theater capacity limitations. That said, this should also lead to better legs (and Japan is already one of the world's leggiest markets). In Doraemon's case, its first week is a holiday period (Obon Festival), so the next several days could rival each each single weekend day due to it selling so many of its available seats out.

I'm not going to try to give a weekend estimate for Doraemon: Nobita's New Dinosaur, rather I'll provide a range.

A few notes about its opening weekend first (#2 will be true for most other films too), however:

1. To begin, it's certainly worth noting that the film sold ~26% of its available admissions over the weekend frame at the usual locations (~70% of the market). That's a fine number, but do remember that many theaters have capacity restrictions in place, so it likely would have sold a bit more under normal conditions. For comparison, the last few Doraemon films sold between ~32-38% of their available weekend admissions.

2. The usual locations are largely located in highly populated prefectures, meaning the remaining locations in rural prefectures probably account for a much larger share of weekend admissions than normal since they're able to operate without as many restrictions right now. This was certainly true the last two weekends when I ran the numbers. So this could result in some misleading estimates until actual figures come out given we can't just use an average multiplier to account for the missing locations (~30% of the market) like in the past. If anything, any estimate based on the usual locations and older method of calculating an estimate is going to be noticeably lower than the weekend actual.

3. The film increased on both Saturday (+~33%) and Sunday (+~24%). This isn't usual or anything, it's typically the norm for the market, especially for a family/younger skewing film. But it's worth mentioning here given the capacity restrictions and to gauge any upward/downward trend from audiences. And it's also good news leading into one of the three biggest holiday periods of the year (Obon Festival).

Alright, so here is my projected range:

Using the tried older method: 2-Day: ¥350 million ($3.3 million) / 300,000 admissions; 3-Day: ¥470 million ($4.4 million) / 400,000 admissions. (Not accounting for the higher share of ticket sales that rural locations are likely providing.)

Using the rough new method: 2-Day: ¥415 million ($3.9 million) / 355,000 admissions; 3-Day: ¥580 million ($5.5 million) / 495,000 admissions. (Accounting for the higher share of ticket sales that rural locations are likely providing.)

If it opened closer to the first number, I'd rule it as a bit of a disappointing debut. I wouldn't write it off though since its total could end up higher than its opening would suggest given the major holiday period it's entering immediately on Monday. It's not uncommon for a film to nearly triple their weekend gross over the Obon Festival weekdays, and that could be especially true here.

And if it opener closer to the second number, I think that's a fine debut. It will be on the lower-end of the franchise's opening weekends, but it'll be satisfactory enough in my opinion given the theater capacity restrictions right now. And, as mentioned above, it could very well develop serious legs and end up with a higher total than its opening would suggest.

Corpse, do you think doraemon franchise has started to decline or is it just because of covid 19 that it's usual audience are reluctant to come to cinemas?

I really don't think we can make any assumptions right now. We need to see what the end result may be first. Japan is already one of the most "wait and see" markets out there (if not #1 in that regard), and it's probably going to become even more so now.

And as I was mentioning, several times, a major holiday period just began, so any possible disappointing opening weekend frame could simply be a result of spillover (holdouts). Monday, for example, is currently tracking ahead of Sunday, so Doraemon could be looking at its third straight day of increasing. Not to mention that Doraemon has always opened the beginning of March, three weeks away from a holiday period; not in August, literally the weekend before a major holiday period.

I think it's going to be perfectly fine in the end. Its just the path to that final result that is probably going to look different than a more traditional run due to the circumstances. "Wait and see."

Doraemon increased on Monday (about 1%), achieving its third consecutive day of increasing. I'm guessing that it's earned around 800 million ($7 5 million) and 680,000 admissions after four days in release. And remember to note that estimates right now are very rough and could vary a good deal when actual come in.

Weekend Actuals will be delayed this week due to Obon Festival, but I'll post them as soon as they become available.

Looks good for Doremon thus far. I think it's song really well given the conditions.

Are Obon Festival Daily Estimates something people would want this week (like I've always done in the past)? As mentioned, gathering estimates won't be particularly accurate at the moment, not until we can determine the % share of ticket sales that rural locations has risen to, but they could still provide usual data.

Given the curiosity the estimates might build more panic and more declaration of doom-and-gloom :funny:

Post Re: Japan Box-Office: First Obon Festival Figures
I'll wait until tomorrow because I think the full Weekend Actuals will be released this evening since some were released this morning (yesterday evening in Japan).

Doraemon: Nobita's New Dinosaur earned ¥413 million ($3.9 million) on 334,000 admissions over the weekend frame (08/08-09), and has grossed ¥761 million ($7.2 million) on 630,000 admissions after its first four-days (08/07-10) in release.

This is very close to the estimate I gave by giving rural locations a much higher share of ticket sales than usual (since they don't have as many capacity restrictions as urban locations), so I'd consider it a win and good news for doing estimates moving forward. The weekend opening itself is on the low-end for the franchise, but it still opened well under restrictions. The eventual total will be more representative of its success than the opening weekend. A four-day total that's almost 2x the opening weekend, even if it's a holiday period, is already a very encouraging sign of a leggy run.

As for the holdovers,

From Today, It's My Turn! continues to do very well in second place, grossing ¥218 million ($2.1 million) by selling a further 167,000 admissions in its fourth weekend, bringing its cumulative 25-day total (Monday included) above ¥3.3 billion ($31.1 million+) on 2.62 million admissions. It's going to get close to the blockbuster milestone of ¥5 billion ($45-50 million) and near 4 million admissions. So... a blockbuster performance is still doable in the market despite theater capacity limits in place. A ¥5 billion total is about the equivalent of a film grossing $250 million in the U.S.

The Confidence Man JP: Episode of the Princess ranked in third place in its third weekend, grossing ¥180 million ($1.7 million) and selling 126,000 admissions, bringing its cumulative 19-day total (Monday included) over ¥2 billion ($19 million) on 1.53 million admissions. It's likely to exceed the ¥3 billion ($30 million) milestone, surpassing its predecessor's ¥2.97 billion ($27.2 million) total.
