Post Re: Japan Box Office: Sellout Watch (Star Wars v Yo-Kai Watc
It's almost show time.

Now with 5/6 hours before the first showtimes begin, nearly all of the "Few Left" (75%+ capacity) showings are "SOLD OUT" (100% capacity) for both films or have just a handful of seats to go, and the majority of the remaining showings have reached "Half-Full" (50%+ capacity).

It's difficult to find any theater where either film isn't half-booked or more for the entire weekend now. Both films may exceed 60% capacity for the weekend.

I'll be posting hourly updates with real-time ticket sales from 66% of the market beginning tonight, and throughout the rest of what's almost certain to be the biggest weekend ever.

Here are the pre-sales from 42% of each film's theater count.

Advance Ticket Sales/Available Tickets [Theaters/Showings], Film
138,795/463,289 [155/1,795], Star Wars: The Force Awakens
116,563/320,351 [150/1,073], Yo-Kai Watch: Great King Enma and the 5 Stories, Nyan!

Each film almost tripled the previous highs from earlier this year.

And what monstrous pre-sales for both films, and they're close enough that the weekend isn't guaranteed to go to Star Wars just yet, in terms of admissions that is. In revenue, Star Wars will win the weekend pretty easily.

I'll be posting real-time ticket sales from 66% of the market for the day soon, with the first update (ticket sales from 7AM to 10AM) coming up soon.

Usual Locations (66% of Market) - Real-Time Saturday Ticket Sales

10AM > 11AM > 12PM > 1PM > 2PM > 3PM > 4PM > 5PM > 7PM > 10PM > FINAL

74,565 - Yo-Kai Watch 2
52,996 - Star Wars VII

Well, these numbers destroy anything I've ever tracked so thoroughly. They're overwhelming.

Expected early lead for Yo-Kai Watch 2, and it's only down about 14% from last year's record breaking first film so far. The majority of its ticket sales will come from the AM and early afternoon showings.

Star Wars VII will be playing catch up until the evening showings begin, so this race will be going undecided for most of the day, if not into Sunday if they end up reasonably close for Saturday.

52,996 > 60,631 - Star Wars VII

Pretty massive lead for Yo-Kai Watch 2. It's probably selling through 80%+ of its morning tickets. The updates will be the polar opposite in the evening with huge increases for Star Wars VII.

52,996 > 60,631 > 75,890 > 117,855 > 124,236 - Star Wars VII

At roughly the mid-day point, 2PM:

206,086/307,147 (67.1% capacity) - Yo-Kai Watch 2
124,236/277,990 (44.7% capacity) - Star Wars VII

Both films are by far on track to deliver the biggest openings of the year, and helping assist the weekend in becoming the biggest of all-time.

Yo-Kai Watch 2 will begin to slow its pace soon since it'll lose the largest screens, and before coming to a near halt after 7PM, while Star Wars VII's business will begin to increase and it'll have the luxury of the largest screens in the evening, too.

It's going to be a close race.

52,996 > x60,631 > x75,890 > 117,855 > 124,236 > 147,342 > 187,892 - Star Wars VII

Now that the evening showings are starting, it's time for Star Wars VII to attempt its comeback. Because if it loses today, it's likely to lose tomorrow (and thus the weekend) since Yo-Kai Watch 2 should play better on Sunday. All in terms of admissions, of course. In revenue, Star Wars VII will win since its avg. ticket price will be 40-50% higher.

Not that there's really going to be a loser this weekend. They'll both approach or exceed 1 million admissions, which is difficult enough for any film (only two films have done it since 2007), let alone two films over a single weekend. They're pushing the box-office limits.

Star Wars VII has made up a lot of ground after 7PM, but can it close the 30,000+ gap from the late-night showings (10PM-)? It might reach 300,000, but I actually think it's going to lose to Yo-Kai Watch 2 today in ticket sales which has remained above 60% capacity all day.

Which again, there's not really a loser on this weekend.

Final update and Saturday results/estimates will be up in a couple hours.

Star Wars VII ~¥1,600
Yo-Kai Watch 2 ~¥1,100

Star Wars VII will win the weekend even if it sells fewer tickets since its avg. ticket price will be so high, but I don't think it's going to win the weekend in terms of admissions. And Japanese weekend rankings are done by ticket sales, not earnings.

I, however, post the weekend results according to revenue (since it's the global ranking scale) and note in the write-up if there's any difference between the films' rankings in admissions.

So if both hit 1m admissions we're talking here $13m and $9m...

Yeah, around there. It doesn't seem like much in USD since the exchange rate is so unfavorable this year, but remember that legs are long in the market, especially this time of year. That $13 million, plus whatever it made from its evening Friday showings (I'll explain later), could still end up resulting in a $100 million total.

And that's it for Saturday! Here's the update breakdown:

Saturday Pre-sales:
138,795 - Star Wars VII
116,563 - Yo-Kai Watch 2

2PM Update:
206,086/307,147 (67.1% capacity) - Yo-Kai Watch 2
124,236/277,990 (44.7% capacity) - Star Wars VII

7PM Update:
308,702/484,067 (63.8% capacity) - Yo-Kai Watch 2
226,411/517,421 (43.8% capacity) - Star Wars VII

FINAL Update:
317,709/530,456 (59.9% capacity) - Yo-Kai Watch 2
293,246/714,702 (41.0% capacity) - Star Wars VII

Yo-Kai Watch 2 more than doubled the previous biggest opening days of 2015 (Dragon Ball Z: Revival of F - 153,852 and Jurassic World - 152,210), and Star Wars VII came pretty close to doubling them, as well!

I'll have Saturday Estimates up soon, as well as updated Weekend Projections.

Saturday Estimates:
¥690 million ($5.7 million) / 620,000 admissions - Yo-Kai Watch: Great King Enma and the 5 Stories, Nyan!
¥820 million ($6.8 million) / 505,000 admissions - Star Wars: The Force Awakens

Updated Weekend Projections:
¥1,350,000,000 ($11.1 million) / 1,225,000 admissions - Yo-Kai Watch: Great King Enma and the 5 Stories, Nyan!
¥1,575,000,000 ($13.0 million) / 975,000 admissions - Star Wars: The Force Awakens

This is the first time in history that two ¥1 billion openers have ever debuted on the same weekend (think of this as two films in the US opening to $125/150 million or so on the same weekend), and it'd be an even more staggering weekend if Star Wars VII can exceed 1 million admissions, giving the weekend two 1 million+ admissions debuts, too.

And if it's still any question, this weekend will be the biggest of all-time.

Based on Saturday's results, and updating the Weekend Projections, here's where the two films could land on the all-time opening charts:

NOTE: These are projected opening weekends based on an the estimated Saturday.

It's also important to remember that prior to 2012, nearly every blockbuster had previews that were included in their opening weekends. That doesn't happen anymore, and previews are very rare, so breaking into the Top 10 is incredibly difficult these days.

Top All-Time Opening Weekends [REVENUE]

No, including Friday, its "3-day" total should be near ¥2 billion if not slightly above (~¥2.1 billion) the milestone.

As you know, Friday isn't apart of the weekend frame in Japan (just Saturday and Sunday), so those earnings will only be included in the film's running total.

It received a very odd Friday release, too. Showtimes didn't start until 6:30PM. I don't know why it only received a third of a days worth of showings, other than perhaps Disney or theaters were expecting it to be fully booked for the weekend, or maybe Disney was nervous that a traditional Friday release would take away too much business from the weekend and cost it a win against Yo-Kai Watch.
