Ah so it was also a holiday. Do you still get the discounts when Wednesday falls on a holiday? Here in Singapore the Tuesday discounts are stopped if the day falls on a holiday weekday.

% changes versus same day last week.

Note: Spring Break doesn't technically start until March 23rd/24th, but Wednesday is a national holiday and films are beginning to benefit from the Spring box-office season, so I'm posting the dailies a little early this year. The numbers (and holds/increases) will continue to grow as we get closer to April.

Interesting that Coco isn't able to get back to #1 in Japan. The OW was great but I guess the entry of TBB so early in its run isn't helping.

>It's going to be another too close to call battle between Coco and Doraemon this weekend. I'm almost certain that Doraemon will come out on top in admissions once again, but the top spot in revenue could go to Coco for a second weekend.

>The Boss Baby looks to settle for third place over the weekend in its debut, but third place is higher than any other DreamWorks animation film in the past (Shrek 2 opened in 5th). Its opening weekend will be on par with Shrek 2's for biggest opening weekend for a DreamWorks animation film despite opening three days prior. Simply put, it's damn impressive.

>Tomb Raider is generating very little interest and seventh place is as high as it'll debut.

You posted too soon. :mer:

Weekday and Weekend rankings can change drastically depending on the time of year.

This is a bit surprising to me too. I thought given the weekday trend, Boss Baby would have been #1 for the weekend too. It seemed to be attracting young kids on a level on par with Doraemon (strong morning/afternoons) while also having the adult appeal of Coco (strong evenings).

Post Re: Japan Box Office: Weekend Forecast (03/24-25)
There's a few factors involved:

First: The simplest factor is that some films just burn off some interest/demand prior to the weekend by opening early, especially if its reception is mixed or poor.

Second: If a film opens before the weekend, they usually experience showtime/seating cuts come Saturday. This is because when they first open, they're receiving more or less the maximum screens/showtimes that theaters/studios have allocated, and over the course of the pre-weekend day(s), they can determine if cuts or shifts (e.g. moving it to a smaller screen, cutting a late-showing) are needed based on its performance.

Third: During certain breaks, in this case Spring Break, family/kids films (or films that just happen to be skewing young) often do the majority of their business over the weekdays versus the weekends. This is true for just about every market, but it can be very significant in Japan. For example, a film like Doraemon only does 10/15% of its weekly earnings on the weekdays when school is in session, but during school breaks, that very low percentage can jump up to 70+%.

The Boss Baby has been performing steadily throughout the entire day due to the start of Spring Break and by having plenty of evening/night showings that it normally wouldn't have if it didn't open ahead of the weekend. So, while it appears to be appealing to a broad audience, I'm betting it's still skewing young and that its evenings have been bloated some due to it simply having them and an audience to attend them at the moment due to Spring Break.

If you're wondering why Doraemon isn't doing better in the evening/night because of Spring Break as well, it's because it has lost its evening/night showings since it's been out for four weeks, with its final showings typically being around 6/7pm.

I'm going to be pessimistic voice of Boss Baby because it lack one important factor, it isn't made by Illuminati

Apparently Boss Baby won in admissions and Coco won in earnings. That means Coco has lost in admissions for two consecutive weekends to two different movies. I doubt that's ever happened before.

So Doraemon wasn't #2 for the weekend? I cannot imagine Doraemon tickets being more expensive that either of Coco or TBB.

It was a very close three-way battle for the #1 spot. As mentioned above, Coco wins its second-consecutive week atop the box-office despite coming in second place once again in terms of admissions. The Boss Baby debuted in second place, but it ranked first in terms of admissions. Doraemon ranked third in revenue and admissions, but it was right behind them.

In terms of revenue, only ¥55.3 million ($526,000) separated the three films, with only ¥23.1 million ($220,000) separating the top two. And in terms of admissions, it was even much closer, with only 14,386 admissions separating all three films, and only 4,051 admissions separating the top two.

The three films look like they'll be too-close to call on a day-to-day basis, as well, as we enter the last week of Spring Break. Pretty much every day since last Wednesday has been a toss-up on which of the three films won the day.

I'll post the Weekend Actuals in an hour or so.

A very close race at the top of the box-office this weekend, with less than 15,000 admissions separating the top three films.

>Coco defends its reign atop the box-office, but this is the second-consecutive time that it's done so by ranking #2 over the weekend in terms of admissions (282,505). Its second weekend hold is strong, and its dailies have been good as well, so I'm pretty sure it'll exceed the ¥4 billion ($40 million) milestone.

>The Boss Baby debuts in a strong second place, though it actually ranked #1 over the weekend in terms of admissions with 286,556 tickets sold across 335 screens. Since opening on Wednesday, its five-day admissions reached 670,786. Its debut is by far the highest for a DreamWorks release, topping Shrek 2 by 24% despite opening on a Wednesday. It's still hard to project a finish after five days in release, but I expect it'll at least reach ¥2.5 billion ($25 million).

Aside from Disney/Pixar, Japan is a market that imported animation was never able to attract a significant audience, but ever since local distributor Toho-Towa (subsidiary of Toho) has gotten the rights for them (since they own distribution rights to Universal), Illumination and maybe now even DreamWorks is finally succeeding after decades of bombs and failure to land theatrical releases.

>Doraemon: Nobita's Treasure Island falls to third place in a very competitive weekend (272,200 admissions). The thirty-eighth has nothing to be worried about, though, as it's still tracking ahead of every other film in the series, and is likely to reach the ¥5 billion ($50 million) milestone.

>The Greatest Showman keeps on entertaining, surpassing Chicago to become the fifth highest-grossing live-action musical in the market. It'll pass The Phantom of the Opera possibly over next weekend to reach the fourth spot, and then go on to challenge La La Land for the third spot.

>Tomb Raider is so uninteresting that no actual has been released for it yet... I'l update it when the number is available.

Post Re: Japan Box Office: Highest Grossing DreamWorks Animation
Highest-Grossing DreamWorks Animation Films:

¥2.50 billion ($22.4 million) - Shrek 2 (2004)
¥2.27 billion ($18.1 million) - Shrek (2001)
¥2.05 billion ($26.1 million) - Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted (2012)
¥2.00 billion ($17.2 million) - Kung Fu Panda (2008)
¥1.88 billion ($17.6 million) - Shark Tale (2005)
¥1.55 billion ($12.6 million) - Shrek the Third (2007)
¥1.17 billion ($14.0 million) - Puss in Boots (2012)
¥1.10 billion ($7.9 million) - Over the Hedge (2006)
¥1.08 billion ($13.6 million) - Kung Fu Panda 2 (2011)
¥1.05 billion ($10.0 million) - The Boss Baby (2018) [Estimate After 7 Days]
¥1.02 billion ($10.7 million) - Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa (2009)
¥1.00 billion ($11.9 million) - Shrek Forever After (2011)

I never thought this list would ever see an update again, since DreamWorks Animation was basically pronounced dead, but six-years later...The Boss Baby is almost locked to outgross Shrek 2 to become the highest-grossing DreamWorks Animation release in Japan fourteen-years later.

Pretty sad list, though, without a single DreamWorks Animation film ever being an actual success, with Shrek 2 coming in 18th for the year in 2004, the highest ranking on any yearly list for the studio. DreamWorks Animation doesn't even have a single film among the Top 100 highest-grossing animated films in Japan, either, and you'd have to go as far as a Top 150 list to find one (Shrek 2).

Following many disastrous performances, Paramount and Fox largely* stopped distributing DreamWorks Animation releases in Japan, and none of their films from mid-2012 onward were able to find local distributors due to the financial risk. The Boss Baby is DreamWorks Animation's first theatrical release in the market since 2012, following local distributor Toho-Towa acquiring distribution rights of DreamWorks Animation films by owning the distribution rights of Universal properties in the market.

*Fox did release Penguins of Madagascar in the market, but it was a limited release and missed opening within the Top 20.

I think that's expected since Coco is not as young-skewing as those films and is getting a smaller Spring Break boost. Doraemon and Boss Baby will likely drop noticeably harder than Coco once kids are back in school.

Does this mean all future DreamWorks Animation films will get a Japan release? How to Train Your Dragon 3 is their next major film, but the franchise has a very poor track record in Japan. I wonder if a simple distributor change can turn it into a success.
