Re: Japan Box Office: Weekend Estimates (03/02-03)
Jack Sparrow wrote: Is DH5 having IMAX and/or bigger ticket price? It seems to be ahead of Flight in TOHO which is always good and then its second or ahead of Flight everywhere else. I'm not sure if Toho is the largest cinema chain now. Aeon Group bought out Warner Bros.'s share in the Warner Mycal chain in late December, and the deal was supposed to have been finalized in March. When it is finalized, Aeon Group will have the most theaters and screens in the country. I'm curious if they'll change the name of the Warner Mycal chain. It seems impractical, but Warner Bros. has their logo on all the cinemas and will soon no longer operate as an exhibitor in Japan, so I don't know . Anyway, Die Hard 5 is playing in IMAX but it's skewing so old (50+) because of fans of the franchise's earlier films and Bruce Willis, that it hardly matters with all the senior discount tickets. The 20-30 age group ranked last in the opening weekend exit poll, and those under 20 failed to register on the poll meaning it was below at least 3%. The #1 spot looks up for grabs between Flight and Die Hard 5 based on the cinema chain rankings, but I think ranking 1st at Warner Mycal and Shikoku gives Flight the edge and weekend estimates have it slightly higher, too.

Hmm interesting. Even sites like THR are claiming Flight to be #1 it is kinda lucky IMO to have a free weekend to itself.

Re: Japan Box Office: Weekend Ranking (03/02-03)
Weekend Ranking (03/02-03)
1 (-) Flight (Paramount) NEW 2 (1) A Good Day to Die Hard (Fox) Week 3 3 (2) Ted (Toho-Towa) Week 7 4 (5) Les Miserables (Toho-Towa) Week 11 5 (-) Django Unchained (Sony) NEW 6 (4) Brain Man (Toho) Week 4 7 (3) A Certain Magical Index (Warner Bros.) Week 2 8 (9) Life of Pi (Fox) Week 6 9 (6) Strawberry Night (Toho) Week 6 10 (29) Agro (Disney) Week 19 11 (8) Zero Dark Thirty (Gaga) Week 3
Washington's latest film Flight debuted on 321 screens to 129,920 admissions and earned ¥156,322,250 ($1.69 million) over the weekend. Since opening on Friday, it has sold 199,358 admissions and grossed ¥225,962,750 ($2.43 million).
Django Unchained managed a Top 5 debut on only 148 screens, but took it a mediocre ¥63,532,700 ($684,000) on 50,123 admissions for the weekend. It also opened on Friday, bringing it's 3-day total to ¥92,309,900 ($995,000) on 77,998 admissions. This weak showing isn't too surprising considering that except for the Kill Bill films, Tarantino has never been successful in the market.
Very nice for Argo. It added 109 theaters (up from only 7 before this weekend). It was very well-received last October (even nominated for Best Foreign Film), but it's box office was really weak despite this never playing on more than 115 screens and failed to rank in the Top 10 even once. This second run thanks to winning Best Picture, while it won't be very much, could match it's first run.
And now that the slow period is finally over, we have a big showdown between 2013's (calendar year) first major releases: Oz: The Great and Powerful playing in 329 theaters (on 582 screens) and Doraemon: Nobita's Secret Gadget Museum playing in 342 theaters, this upcoming weekend opening before Spring Break.

Les Mis increased week-on-week by 17% following it's Oscar wins. It's now only ¥120 million away from becoming the highest-grossing imported-film since Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2.
Ted remains a beast and is actually going to reach ¥4 billion ($45 million). It has been adding screens every single week ever since it opened, but it's legs are still mighty impressive.
Strawberry Night was so close to hitting ¥2 billion this weekend, though it surely did on either Monday or Tuesday so early congrats to Toho.
Brain Man becomes the 14th film of 2013 to achieve ¥1 billion.

Re: Japan Box Office: Weekend Forecast (03/09-10)
Weekend Forecast (03/09-10)1 (-) Doraemon: Nobita's Secret Gadget Museum (Toho) ¥510 million ($5.5 million) NEW [342 theaters]2 (-) Oz: The Great and Powerful (Disney) ¥305 million ($3.3 million) NEW [329 theaters]3 (1) Flight (Paramount) ¥110 million ($1.2 million) Week 2 4 (2) A Good Day to Die Hard (Fox) ¥95 million ($1.1 million) Week 4 5 (3) Ted (Toho-Towa) ¥90 million ($1 million) Week 8 6 (4) Les Miserables (Toho-Towa) ¥75 million ($805,000) Week 12 7 (5) Django Unchained (Sony) ¥35 million ($375,000) Week 2 8 (6) Brain Man (Toho) ¥35 million ($375,000) Week 5 9 (8) Life of Pi (Fox) ¥30 million ($325,000) Week 7 10 (9) Strawberry Night (Toho) ¥25 million ($270,000) Week 7 The 33rd installment in the Doraemon movie franchise is handily winning Saturday's morning and afternoon showings at the usual locations and will have no problem winning the weekend, especially in admissions. The franchise will also reach a monumental milestone as early as next week: surpassing 100 million admissions to become the most attended movie franchise in history by overtaking Godzilla. Every March except one has seen a new Doraemon film release since 1980 and they almost always dominate the children/family demo all month going into Spring Break, so opening Oz here probably wasn't the best idea. Oz would have benefited much better in late-April to take advantage of the Golden Week holidays in the same way Alice in Wonderland and others have in the past. Projected Totals (¥1 billion+) after Sunday: -Les Miserables: ¥5.4 billion ($61 million) after twelve weeks. -Ted: ¥3.8 billion ($42 million) after eight weeks. -Strawberry Night: ¥2.05 billion ($23 million) after seven weeks. -Life of Pi: ¥1.85 billion ($21 million) after seven weeks. -Die Hard 5: ¥1.8 billion ($20 million) after four weeks. -Brain Man: ¥1.1 billion ($13 million) after five weeks.

Re: Japan Box Office: Weekend Forecast (03/09-10)
http://eiga.com/news/20130309/5/Its being reported that in advance ticket sales, Doraemon: Nobita's Secret Gadget Museum outpaced last year's film by 42%. Last year's film, Doraemon: Nobita and the Island of Miracles, had the 3rd highest opening in the franchise (¥552 million), 11th biggest of the year, and then became the highest-grossing (¥3.62 billion) and most attended (3.4 million) film in the franchise. That was also enough to become the 7th biggest film last year. I don't expect Saturday's estimate to be 42% above last year's film since advance ticket sales are very rarely reported making it tough to gauge them, but nonetheless this is a very encouraging report. To break the franchise's opening weekend record, it needs to beat ¥559 million earned by Doraemon: Nobita's New Adventure into the Underworld in 2007.

My opinion on recent or current movies wouldn't mean anything since I don't go to the movies or rent movies too often anymore. I pretty much only exclusively see movies I'm sure to enjoy because I don't have the time to see much else.

Re: Japan Box Office: Weekend Forecast (03/09-10)
Saturday Estimates (03/09)Rank / Film / Sat. Est. / % change from last Sat. / Day in Release1 Doraemon: Nobita's Secret Gadget Museum (Toho) ¥370 million ($3.95 million) Day 1 [342 theaters, 353 screens] 2 Oz: The Great and Powerful (Disney) ¥115 million ($1.25 million) Day 2 [329 theaters, 582 screens]3 Flight (Paramount) ¥47 million ($500,000), -41%, Day 9 4 Ted (Toho-Towa) ¥42 million ($450,000), -37%, Day 50 5 A Good Day to Die Hard (Fox) ¥41 million ($440,000), -45%, Day 24 6 A Certain Magical Index (Warner Bros.) ¥28 million ($300,000), +9%, Day 15 7 Les Miserables (Toho-Towa) ¥23 million ($245,000), -49%, Day 78 8 Django Unchained (Sony) ¥19 million ($205,000), -39%, Day 9 9 Brain Man (Toho) ¥18 million ($190,000), -38%, Day 29 10 Strawberry Night (Toho) ¥10 million ($105,000), -53%, Day 43 11 Life of Pi (Fox) ¥8 million ($85,000), -65%, Day 44 Just WOW at Doraemon. It's first day was 38% stronger than last year's film (not far off that early 42% afterall) and this will undoubtedly give this year's film the biggest opening ever in the franchise with ¥600-700 million ($6.5-7.5 million). In admissions, that will be a very strong 550-600,000. It's easily the second best opening this year (behind only One Piece Film Z's record OW), and I have no doubt this figure will be good enough to earn a Top 10 spot of the year. Very poor for Oz: The Great and Powerful. I guess it's looking at maybe ¥225 million ($2.4-2.5) for the weekend frame and a 3-day total of ¥275 million ($3 million). It was a very bad idea to open this weekend against Doraemon - should have waited until April or May. This situation is very reminiscent of last July when Brave bombed when opening against Wolf Children. A Certain Magical Index added some screens this weekend that I wasn't aware of, thus it'll remain in the Top 10 for another week. The film is doing very well in limited release for Warner Bros. For having been in release for such a long period, most of the holdovers saw some significant drops thanks to screen loss to Doraemon and Oz. This is in particular true for Life Of Pi which really fell apart after losing it's 3D screens.

Re: Japan Box Office: Saturday Estimates (03/09)
Most Recent Doraemon Film History Opening Weekend (Weekend Rank) / Total Gross (Yearly Rank) :: Film (Year)
¥559,412,464 (1) -> ¥3.54 billion (11) :: Doraemon 27: Nobita's New Adventure into the Underworld (2007) ¥553,483,841 (1) -> ¥3.16 billion (16) :: Doraemon 30: Nobita's Great Battle of the Mermaid King (2010) ¥552,617,102 (1) -> ¥3.62 billion (07) :: Doraemon 32: Nobita and the Island of Miracles (2012) ¥517,050,157 (1) -> ¥3.37 billion (11) :: Doraemon 28: Nobita and the Green Giant Legend (2008) ¥446,318,074 (1) -> ¥2.46 billion (14) :: Doraemon 31: Nobita and the New Steel Troops (2011) ¥433,268,207 (2) -> ¥3.28 billion (13) :: Doraemon 26: Nobita's Dinosaur (2006) ¥416,809,107 (2) -> ¥3.05 billion (14) :: Doraemon 25: Wannyan Space Time Odyssey (2004) ¥372,892,608 (2) -> ¥2.45 billion (22) :: Doraemon 29: The New Record of Nobita (2009)
With Doraemon 33: Nobita's Secret Gadget Museum 99.9% likely to break the franchise Opening Weekend record with over ¥600 million, maybe it can also become first to also reach the ¥4 billion milestone. That will be a very difficult feat however since only two films in it's history have broken ¥3.5 billion (both recent releases listed above).

Re: Japan Box Office: Saturday Estimates (03/09)
Distributor Toho reported earlier that the latest Doraemon beat last year's film by 36% on opening day. This is in line with estimates, and if it holds steady on Sunday, we could be looking at an opening weekend of 650,000+ admissions and ¥700 million+.
The 36% number would rank it as the 13th biggest opening ever for an animated film if it holds for the weekend:

Animated films (Brave aside) have been on a really strong winning streak ever since Spring of last year. Hopefully this boom will continue for Hayao Miyazaki's The Wind Rises this July.

Howcome you have so much information on Japan? Hopefully this response will suffice I'm not Japanese nor am I living in Japan, but I've been studying the language, culture and history practically daily for 5 years. I own several text books, audio lessons, encyclopedias and dictionaries, writing system guides, history books, etc. on Japan. At this point, I probably know more about Japan than my own country (US). I am planning to visit Japan in the near future however, but getting my boyfriend to agree to come along is proving difficult. Might have to settle for my second dream of seeing all 13 of the world's great whales before they go extinct (8 of which are endangered already). I also obsessively study up on whales and own many books on them, too, so getting to actually see them is all that remains. I think at some point in a previous life I was a whale that enjoyed sky-hopping at Japan. My interest in the box-office began in 2008, but it wasn't until 2010 after contacting Mark Schilling (Japan corespondent for Variety and the Japan Times) that I was able to really begin to track it. Since then, I've been reading various box-office sites like eiga which I link often, cinematoday, moviewalker, and a host of others. I also chat it up on 2chan.

Re: Japan Box Office: Saturday Estimates (03/09)
Awesome. I feel like I know you a lot better now. It's always good to know a few things about regular contributors.
My wife and I will go to Japan in the next few years. I am quite intrigued with it too.

Weekend Estimates (03/09-10)Rank / Film / Wknd. Est. / % change / Week in Release1 (-) Doraemon: Nobita's Secret Gadget Museum (Toho) ¥683 million ($7.4 million) NEW [342 theaters, 353 screens] 2 (-) Oz: The Great and Powerful (Disney) ¥286 million ($3.1 million) NEW [329 theaters, 582 screens]3 (1) Flight (Paramount) ¥99 million ($1.1 million), -37%, Week 2 4 (2) Ted (Toho-Towa) ¥86 million ($925,000), -35%, Week 8 5 (3) A Good Day to Die Hard (Fox) ¥85 million ($920,000), -41%, Week 4 6 (4) Les Miserables (Toho-Towa) ¥47 million ($505,000), -47%, Week 12 7 (6) Brain Man (Toho) ¥38 million ($415,000), -33%, Week 5 8 (7) A Certain Magical Index (Warner Bros.) ¥38 million ($410,000), -26%, Week 3 9 (5) Django Unchained (Sony) ¥37 million ($400,000), -40%, Week 2 10 (9) Strawberry Night (Toho) ¥21 million ($215,000), -54%, Week 7 11 (8) Life of Pi (Fox) ¥16 million ($170,000), -65%, Week 7 Not quite as high as Saturday was suggesting for Doraemon: Nobita's Secret Gadget Museum, but it still easily manages the best opening in the franchise, the second best opening of the year (and very likely a Top 10 spot once the year is over), and the 15th best opening ever for an animated film. Using the normal multiplier the past films typically get, it has a very good chance of hitting ¥4 billion ($45 million). Oz: The Great and Powerful recovered pretty well on Sunday and debuts to a decent, even if a bit underwhelming, weekend figure. Since it opened on Friday, the 3-day total should be somewhere between ¥325-350 million ($3.5-3.8 million). It bested The Hobbit's opening weekend in admissions by 34%, and with the help of Spring Break in a couple weeks, it should be able to reach ¥2-2.5 billion ($25/30 million).

Weekend Ranking (03/09-10)
1 (-) Doraemon: Nobita's Secret Gadget Museum (Toho) NEW! 2 (-) Oz: The Great and Powerful (Disney) NEW! 3 (1) Flight (Paramount) Week 2 4 (2) A Good Day to Die Hard (Fox) Week 4 5 (3) Ted (Toho-Towa) Week 8 6 (4) Les Miserables (Toho-Towa) Week 12 7 (5) Django Unchained (Sony) Week 2 8 (7) A Certain Magical Index (Warner Bros.) Week 3 9 (6) Brain Man (Toho) Week 5 10 (13) Tens Days of Tomorrow (Showgate) Week 3
Doraemon: Nobita's Secret Gadget Museum, the 33rd installment in the long-running franchise, set a franchise record-opening with ¥667,291,850 ($7.2 million) with 597,899 admissions on 353 screens over the weekend. This beats the previous opening record by 20%.
Oz: The Great and Powerful is off to an unspectacular start, but not surprising given the the little known source material and no well-known lead. It debuted on 582 screens to ¥269,909,900 ($ 2.9 million)) with 184,281 admissions for the weekend frame. And since opening on Friday, that brings it's 3-day total to a decent ¥336,435,800 ($3.6 million)) with 232,076 admissions. Females made up 65% of the audience, with mother and daughters representing 40% of the audience followed by couples in their 30s. Clearly, all the family and young children audiences went for Doraemon instead.
I've been waiting for enough bigger openings to post the Opening Weekend Chart of 2013, and I'll have it up shortly with these two openings being enough.

I don't think anything will come close to One Piece Film Z this year, and some years after that. It delivered the biggest opening in 5 years and was the first film in that time to break 1 million admissions on opening weekend, and it also became the most attended local film of all-time on opening weekend, too, beating Howl's Moving Castle's 1,104,980 admissions (Howl still holds the all-time opening in yen, however).
I guess Hayao Miyazaki's The Wind Rises opening this July has a chance (his last 3 films have all opened above ¥1 billion), and it has been 5 years since his last film so anticipation will be very high, but it'll be really tough.

Les Miserables becomes the highest-grossing and most-attended imported-film since Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2.
Ted is still doing well and could reach the ¥4 billion mark this upcoming weekend or very shortly after. To put this number into perspective, it has now outgrossed every imported-film released in the calendar year last year (The Avengers, Resident Evil, Spider-Man, etc).
Strawberry Night fell out of the Top 10 this week, but still passed the ¥2 billion milestone.

Are Les Mis and Ted just an accident or does Universal have a strong subdivision in Japan?
