Post Re: Japan Box Office (And More)
And right when I post the chart above, this past week's sales were released about an hour later. I'll have that chart (03/23-29) posted tomorrow.

And a note about Demon Slayer since it's going to be asked soon: Expect to see it dominating the charts every week, possibly all year long. If you see any of its volumes (currently at 19) fall out of the Top 20/25, it's only because of stocking issues. All 19 of its volumes will be in the Top 25 tomorrow and nearly all of them sold more copies (a lot more) than the week above.

Its sales are absolutely incredible and it's breaking all-time records. It's actually the biggest phenomenon in over a decade, and it's making the case as being the biggest hit manga ever in terms of sales.

From December 2019 to March 2020, the series sold a ridiculous 29,743,955 copies in a four month period (that's the equivalent of ~$125 million in revenue), setting a new sales record for any series in a four month period. One Piece, the best selling manga of all time (at 470 million copies), has the all-time yearly record for a series with 38 million copies sold in 2011, and Demon Slayer is likely to beat that figure in almost half the time (possibly in June). It could exceed 50 million copies sold in 2020 alone... That'd bring its overall sales somewhere around 75 million or so after just four years of serialization.

Be on the lookout when the first film (actually adapting a full manga arc, not some filler story) opens late 2020 (probably December).

Post Re: Japan Box Office (And More)
Its first season (26 episodes) aired last year, which is what caused the boom in its manga sales to begin. However, while most manga receive a boost to their sales from an anime adaptation, that boost tends to be somewhat short-lived (think 6-months). The more well-received the anime is, the bigger and longer the boost to the manga sales. But this is different as it's showing a degree of dominance and such crazy figures (all its volume are on course to break 3 million with ease) compared to, well, everything before it.

The first season of Demon Slayer was such a significant hit, that it's still having a major impact despite it ending in September last year. And since the manga has also been very well received, it's naturally creating more fans that way as well, outside of just bringing in fans of the anime. No other manga/anime has done this on this grand scale before, outside of perhaps One Piece back in 2010-2012, so it's a remarkable thing to watch. Attack on Titan also saw a similar boost in 2014/2015 (I think), and while its numbers were big (only second to One Piece), its sales figures were still only half of Demon Slayer's right now.

And the film releasing later this year is taking an all new route in anime film adaptations by adapting the next story arc of the manga, where the anime left off, rather than being an original story. So the film will effectively be the season 2 of the anime, so to speak, which is going to make its performance very interesting to watch. Its opening weekend in particular could go break records, assuming the coronavirus has died down and doesn't make a big return later this fall/winter of course.

Post Re: Japan Box Office (And More)
Detective Conan: The Scarlet Bullet has been postponed. It was scheduled to open April 17th. This was the big one for the first half of 2020, and a contender for biggest film of 2020, so it's understandable that Toho wanted until just now to announce it. The announcement was trending last night.

Clearly all the big March/April films can't be moved to July/August, but if any film gets rescheduled for the prime summer release window, it'll certainly be Detective Conan. Disney and other studios deciding to put their big films as VOD releases or on streaming services may open the release schedule up though for more to release in July/August (assuming this get better, obviously). Japan isn't a big digital/streaming market yet, so Disney and others could still do theatrical releases in the market, but I question if they'll bother.

With Doraemon being rescheduled on 7 August, will toho try to release Detective Conan: The Scarlet Bullet during July/august? Won't they both clash with each other?

Good question (and welcome to the forum!), but no, they target very different audiences. Doraemon appeals pretty much exclusively to young children (and families), while Detective Conan has a broader demographic that primarily targets teens and adult audiences. Besides, July and August are the two biggest months of the year for the box-office, and many, many films, including blockbusters, regularly play perfectly fine despite any potential competition.

Since Detective Conan appeals toward adults, Toho could go with most any time of the year, but you don't want one of your biggest films/franchises opening in the typically weaker months of October or November. If they don't go with July or August, early/mid-September would be okay too. (July would still be the ideal month to aim for).

All of this is, of course, assuming things will be relatively normal come the summer and fall box-office seasons.

One Piece and Dragon Ball fans are at war on who's more popular. Dragon Ball fan point out that One Piece sold more because it has more volume. Can you do something like best selling manga per volume?

The short answer to that is simple: One Piece is bigger in Japan; Dragon Ball is bigger outside of Japan.

One Piece has sold 392 million copies in Japan and 80 million outside of Japan for a 472 million total. This data was just updated last week by Shueisha. Volume 96 was released this week, so those figures will change next week.

Dragon Ball has sold 160 million copies in Japan and at least 120 million outside of Japan for a 280 million total. This data is a little older, from April 2018, so it's going to be a little higher now. The 300 million total from above accounts for this, but mostly from other earlier estimates.

And the fanboys of each series is what provides us with the long "answers", or rather opinions.

And best selling manga per volume is indeed released at the end of each year (since 2008 at least), but you have to remember that's not going to be the final figure or anything, sometimes not even close if a volume was released near the end of the year. And once a volume stops selling a certain amount, it falls off the charts and can be difficult to track unless the publisher would release something on it or if it resurfaces on the charts at a later date.

I can try to put together a list, but it's basically going to look like this (and this is Japan sales only since international sales either vary greatly or just aren't available):

One Piece will of course dominate such a list. It could honestly occupy around two-thirds of a Top 100. All volumes from 1-70 are likely around 4.5/5 million copies each, while volumes 71-90 fall between 3-4 million copies each (later volumes being much closer to 3 than 4), and the more recent volumes of 91-95 hovering around 2.5 million or so.

Dragon Ball has little to no data per volume since it's an older series, but if you take what it's sold and divide that by the number of volumes, then that's an average of 3.8 million copies each. It's probably fair to assume that average is pretty accurate per volume since the series is older. Not all 42 volumes would have sold exactly 3.8 million obviously, but I doubt any would fall outside of a 3.5-4.1 million range for example.

Demon Slayer is new to the game, but as you have seen in the weekly rankings, it's absolutely dominating in sales and all but the most recent volume (since it's only been out for 2 months) has sold over 2.5 million copies each, and all of them are certainly on pace to exceed 3 million copies each and then some. It certainly appears to be the successor to One Piece in terms of sales. It only took One Piece a few years to become the sales successor to Dragon Ball, but it's taken almost 20-years for a series to reach similar status.

Naruto ranks very high as a series, but its volumes (at least during the most of the Shippuden era) didn't go much beyond 1.5 million or so. But to account for its high overall sales, the first half of the series has to have some volumes over 2/2.5 million. I highly doubt any came near 3 million though.

Attack on Titan has tapered off a bit in sales, but when it was peaking back in 2013-2016, its volumes were reaching 2-2.5 million copies and backlog volumes saw huge gains and reached similar figures. Volumes 19 and onward didn't reach 2 million, and the recent volumes are coming in below 1.5 million.

Other than these series, no other more modern series (starting around 2000) has had a individual volume reach 2 million or more. But there are two older series that are worth mentioning:

Black Jack is the big one. It has sold 176 million copies, but only had 25 volumes. That averages out to 7 million copies per volume... There's no breakdown of how many it sold outside of Japan, but I doubt that number is particularly high since it's such an old series (1973), so it's the only series that could have per volume sales higher than the biggest One Piece volumes.

Slam Dunk is the other one. It only had 31 volumes, but it sold 126 million copies. That averages out to a little over 4 million copies per volume. And again, since it's an older series, it makes sense for that number to be accurate per volume.

Here is a very nice video showing how many copies PER YEAR (not cumulative) that the top 10 manga of each year sold from 1996-2019. I checked to make sure the numbers were accurate, and they are.

NOTE: Again, the numbers you see are the number of copies being sold PER YEAR (not cumulative).

Thanks for the chart.

I didn't know Black Jack the manga debuted in the 70's. I thought the anime series first came out in the 90's. Such a long gap.

I recognized a few titles there. The anime versions of Dragon Ball Z, Black Jack, Slam Dunk, Ranma 1/2, GTO, City Hunter were on prime time TV in Hong Kong during the 90's. I still remember then a famous ratings battle on Saturday night pitted Dragon Ball Z against Ranma 1/2. Slam Dunk ate up a chunk of existing audiences from a Top-of-the-Pops styled music show, but it was Crayon Shin-Chan that slaughtered it in ratings. That was exciting time for TV with so much competition.

Surprised at One Piece not being strong in OS markets specially with the recent movies doing strong OS numbers I thought the manga will become equally famous.

Post Re: Japan Box Office (And More)
Shinzo Abe declared a state of emergency for Tokyo and neighboring prefectures (7 total) this morning. The virus still hasn't affected Japan as much as most other countries (Tokyo itself only just hit 1,000 cases yesterday), but cases have been rising in recent days, so best to take such measures now. Although, they probably should have taken this action a bit earlier, just in case an outbreak occurs. The state of emergency is expected to last 1 month.

Some animation studios are announcing that voice recordings will be put on hold indefinitely as a result. And this may impact some local films and such as well since filming in Japan is typically begins just 6-months from the planned release, and post-production wraps up within 1-month of release day. So any films that might be in production right now and are on the schedule for this summer/fall may get postponed. No announcements to my knowledge yet, but I'm sure they'll be some in the coming days.

I'll keep the thread updated on any news updates over this.

Weekend Ranking (Admissions): 04/04-05

01 (02) Birds of Prey (Warner Bros.) Week 3
02 (01) Not Quite Dead (Shochiku) Week 3
03 (04) Parasite (Bitter's End) Week 13
04 (03) Mask Ward (Warner Bros.) Week 5
05 (07) Howling Village (Toei) Week 9
06 (05) Fukushima 50 (Shochiku) Week 5
07 (06) Yayoi, March: 30 Years That I Loved You (Toho) Week 3
08 (08) Psycho Pass 3 - First Inspector (Toho Video Division) WK2
09 (10) Midsommar (Phantom Film) Week 7
10 (11) Mishima Yukio vs. Tokyo University (Gaga) Week 3

Here's the past Weekend's Top 10 ranked by admissions. Once again, and unsurprisingly especially now with the stay-at-home order, no weekend figures were released. This weekend is down 90% compared to the same weekend last year, and the box-office is down a projected 63-75%, higher than the reported 55-60% range from last week. Goes to show just how much the box-office really depends on Tokyo and the surrounding prefectures.

Here are the reported cumulative totals, though, which are still be reported, just sparingly and kind of randomly:

Reported Cumulative Totals (As of 04/05):
¥4,580,000,000 ($42.0 million) / 3,300,000 admissions - Parasite (Bitter's End) 87 Days in Release
¥1,360,000,000 ($12.5 million) / 1,080,000 admissions - Howling Village (Toei) 59 Days in Release
¥740,000,000 ($6.8 million) / 565,000 admissions - Fukushima 50 (Shochiku) 31 Days in Release
¥700,000,000 ($6.4 million) / 550,000 admissions - Mask Ward (Warner Bros.) 31 Days in Release
¥600,000,000 ($5.5 million) / 440,000 admissions - Midsommar (Phantom Film) 45 Days in Release

Parasite might be able to challenge some records for time spent in the Top 5/10 (it has never left the top 5) if this mess would continue past May/into June. Of course, the validity of such a high ranking/record if it occurs under these circumstances comes into question.

Best Selling Manga by Series (Top 10): 2020 [11.19-04.05]

10. 1,228,793 - Attack on Titan (Kodansha/Hajime Isoyama)

A few notes about these lists:

01. Any title that's highlighted is currently in the Weekly Top 50, whether remaining there since being released or resurfacing on the most recent weekly sales chart.
02. Any title that's not highlighted has fallen outside the Weekly Top 50, and the sales figure is the total that it last appeared on the weekly sales chart.
03. And while most titles won't reappear back in the Weekly Top 50 after falling off, there are two common factors that can often cause sales to increase again: a. If the title(s) has an ongoing anime and it's entered an important/popular arc, this can sometimes drive the sales of the manga. b. If the manga series itself has entered an important/popular arc, then past volumes can often see an increase in sales.
04. Consider the Best Selling Manga by Series list to be rough, but pretty accurate estimates. The top six series are practically 100% accurate, but the bottom four are less so. A manga series typically has a new volume released every 3 months on average, so the month before a new volume is released tends to be quite low and some series can sometimes falls outside of tracking range for a few weeks and require a bit of estimating until data is released.

And finally, Half-Year Sales Data is released every June, so updated sales figures will be released then. In addition, Yearly Sales Data is released the last week of November, so everything will get updated again. then. Each volume and series will naturally go up from the last tracked figures.

Demon Slayer is slaying hard.

Corpse : Are these manga sales numbers (overall) better because of the lockdown or they are exactly the same? I'm sure they haven't gone down.

They're steady with the last year or two, if perhaps down very slightly (less than 5%). Demon Slayer aside which is way, way up and is going to break the all-time yearly sales record in a couple months and have 5/6-months to spare. Japan just declared their stay-at-home order last week though (and it's not nationwide), so we don't really know the impact it may or may not have.

I'll actually have the Biggest Yearly Sales by Series posted tomorrow. It's dominated by One Piece, which has won all but three years over the past sixteen or seventeen years (Demon Slayer being the third series to beat it last year), and you'll see several other reoccurring series, but you'll see how they compare year-to-year.
