No problem!

Toho Animation, Shueisha, and Marvel are collaborating to promote their respective superhero properties, My Hero and Avengers, by releasing special trailers/clips featuring both brands. The trailers can be found online, but they'll also be airing during commercials of Season 3 of My Hero Academia every Saturday leading up to the release of Avengers: Infinity War.

Interesting. I've read that MHA is getting its first anime movie this summer so that seems like intelligent promotion. I haven't seen much of the franchise but from what I've heard it's apparently pretty good so I hope it does well.

Seems smart. Will this increase its BO prospects or home-media prospects? Generally Hollywood movies releasing this early don't do as well but since Avengers (main series) is big enough in the market I was wondering how this marketing will help.

If Conan is looking for a massive OW this weekend, will you be able to provide hourly updates like other big OW?

If you're busy, don't worry too much, but if you're not then it would be greatly appreciated :)

Also, on that note, although it will be covered in the forecast, just how big a weekend are we looking at?

It can't hurt it, but any benefit at the box-office will probably be small. But we'll see. My Hero Academia is really popular right now, so the cross-promotion could help bring in some viewers.

Regarding the day-and-date release for Avengers, it'll be fine in this case. The Avenger films have managed to perform well in the market, relative to other Marvel/DC films, and is an established brand now, I believe.

I will be.

Should comfortably open above ¥1 billion. I'm going to look at some key theaters when I get home later this evening to see how its early sales are looking.

Post Re: Japan Box Office: Upcoming Release Schedule (April/May)
So, yeah, Detective Conan: Zero the Enforcer will definitely have a huge debut this weekend. It's the first film in the series to ever open on a Friday, and while Fridays are much weaker than Saturdays or Sundays, the film already has many half-full or better showings (mostly in the evening due to work/school) across many locations before the first showings begin here in ~3 hours.

And Saturday is, as expected, looking even better with many locations already nearing or exceeding 50% capacity across all day parts over 24 hours in advance. It also appears to be the widest release for a Detective Conan film, but I'll know with certainty regarding this a little later. Pretty much all the holdovers have suffered 50%+ drops in seating/showtimes.

It's very early to say for certain, but it's highly likely that its opening will be among the highest of the past 10 years.

Okay, pretty clearly it's the widest Detective Conan release, up roughly 8% versus last year's film in seating/showtimes.

The past two films managed to reach a magnificent 56.4% and 54.8% capacity, respectively, over their opening weekends, so if this one matches them, it'll be only the third film to exceed 1 million admissions in its debut in the past 10 years.

With a Friday release shouldn't we expect a decrease in the capacity % over the Saturday-Sunday weekend ? I suspect most people who will go see it on Friday are hardcore fans who would have gone on Saturday if the film had opened that day instead.

We'll see. It's a good first example to see how the new Friday release trend behaves this year since most major releases are receiving it.

But after checking several theaters, Saturday is way ahead of Friday (at least 4x greater), so I don't think the Friday release is going to deflate the weekend that much at the moment. Friday is still a weekday, afterall, and not even the strongest one (Monday and Wednesday are).

It'd be absolutely amazing if it broke some record for the Sat-Sun weekend AFTER burning off some demand on Friday :yummy:

Post Re: Japan Box Office: Upcoming Release Schedule (April/May)
Detective Conan: Zero the Enforcer had a very, very strong Friday, selling around 275,000 admissions to earn ~¥350 million $3.3 million) or so based on my estimates. And this was after "poor" morning/afternoon showings due to school and work. Once the evening showings began, it more than doubled its morning and afternoon showings (10-12 hours) in a 3-4 hour time frame.

Saturday will be significantly bigger, possibly twice as big, and I'll have the advance ticket sale figure for the day posted soon, along with comparisons to the films that have debuted above ¥1 billion since 2015.

Post Re: Japan Box Office: Highest Pre-Sales (2015-)
Highest Pre-Sales (2015-)

Pre-Sales/Available Tickets (Capacity) [Theaters/Showings] - Film (Year)
138,795/463,289 (29.9%) [155/1795] - Star Wars: The Force Awakens (2015)
134,399/440,369 (30.5%) [160/1793] - Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales (2017)
126,032/441,270 (28.6%) [163/1645] - Star Wars: The Last Jedi (2017)
117,302/398,355 (29.4%) [154/1095] - Detective Conan: Crimson Love Letter (2017)
116,563/320,351 (36.3%) [150/1073] - Yo-Kai Watch: Great King Enma and the 5 Stories, Nyan! (2015)
114,570/445,179 (25.7%) [148/1522] - One Piece Film Gold (2016)
113,434/417,488 (27.1%) [159/1147] - Detective Conan: Zero the Enforcer (2018)
x94,641/361,514 (26.1%) [149/1006] - Detective Conan: The Darkest Nightmare (2016)
x93,216/446,234 (20.9%) [159/1580] - Beauty and the Beast (2017)

These pre-sales are from ~43% of the entire market. But when I post the hourly updates later, they'll be from ~68% of the entire market (Aeon Cinemas, the largest chain in the country, is excluded from the pre-sales).

This pretty much guarantees a debut above the ¥1 billion mark over the weekend frame, which doesn't even include its Friday results. Its pre-sales are slightly behind last year's film, but last year's didn't release early on a Friday either. It's also worth noting that last year's film was ahead of the 2016 release by 24% in pre-sales, but ended up closing the weekend out by topping it by 6%.

I'll post the hour-to-hour updates in comparison to the same films above -- all the ¥1 billion+ openers since 2015 -- over the weekend, beginning tonight.

It's really weird/interesting how "poorly" the Conan franchise does in the mornings. I get it not doing as well as Yo-kai Watch given how kid oriented that franchise is but One Piece with its 80%+ adult audience does much better too.

In regard to One Piece, I believe its morning was simply so strong due to its huge fanbase coming out early in order to receive the limited free item. I don't remember what the first attendees got if they saw Gold, it wasn't a manga like with Strong and Z, but it was still a gift worthy of coming out early for.

Post Re: Japan Box Office: Detective Conan 22 Debuts (Hourly Adm.
Unfortunately, I won't be able to update the next several hours because I need sleep. ;) Since the last major film release, my work schedule has become earlier, so I'm pretty exhausted.

I'll be up around 7/8am (7/8pm in Japan) to update the 2pm-7pm hours and continue from there in the morning.

But, as things stand for Detective Conan: Zero the Enforcer at the moment (almost 40% of showings complete), it's definitely going to exceed 300,000 admissions for the day at the usual locations. I'm expecting between 325,000-340,000 for either the second or third biggest day compared to the other ¥1 billion openers in recent years.

Right now, at 18:19, Conan is at 260,183!

Based on the 5/7pms above, that puts it ahead of everything but Yokai and Pirates! If the strong evenings, continue like Conan 21, this has a chance to become top for the day I believe.
