Impressive for DM3. I assume its performance in general is also due to the lack of strong family competition this summer. Pixar's Cars 3 faded pretty fast, and local animated competition also didn't seem as strong as last year.

The Finding Dory number still perplexes me. It was a strong sequel to a beloved film (was the highest grossing foreign animation until Frozen) and had themes that should have resonated with Japanese audiences. Why did it drop so hard from the original when sequels to Toy Story and Monsters Inc were received very well? Toy Story 3 was the franchise peak, and Monsters University hardly dropped at all from its predecessor.

Is this a bad sign for Incredibles 2 and Toy Story 4?

Pixar Studios has been struggling in the market since 2010. Overall, their films have been weaker this decade compared to last decade, and Walt Disney Animation and Illumination (surprisingly) have swept in to take advantage of Pixar's declining audience as a result.

The Incredibles 2 should be fine since the first wasn't among Pixar's upper-tier in terms of revenue/admissions -- there could be room for some growth. Toy Story 4 is probably in store for a sharp decline, though.

Opening: ¥302.4 million ($3.8 million) / 200,180 admissions
Total: ¥1.81 billion ($23.3 million) / 1.24 million admissions

Alien: Covenant's debut was down 36% compared to it this past weekend in revenue, but fared a little better in terms of admissions by dropping 31%.

Thanks, Corpse. Is it just that Pixar's new films aren't getting as great reviews/word of mouth as before, or is it that the brand itself no longer holds the same appeal? After being quite dominant in the previous decade, it's surprising that audiences aren't turning out as much as before for their films despite Pixar's quality being every bit on par with WDAS and Illumination films.

I'd say it's more a matter of appeal. Monsters University was undoubtely weaker than Dory, and way weaker than Inside Out. Yet it is by far their highest grossing post-TS3 movie there.
Also, Illumination hasn't made a single good product after maybe (and that's one hell of a maybe) the first Despicable Me. So, again, it's not a problem of inner quality. That's why I asked Corpse if there's some sort of cultural change behind this: dumb storyless animated flicks started to be successful there (and I'm including Monsters University in the category). Is it because of the weakening of Pixar's offering and the disappearance of Miyazaki's films? Or is that just a trend of general conformism? Or again maybe (as Drek 2 somehow shows) Japan was potentially not different from the rest of the world in the first place, and Dreamworks was simply unlucky with its first flicks, and doomed by them?

I wonder if maybe audiences are skewing younger for Illumination films and that Pixar's decline is a result of losing older viewers. As successful as DM3 is, it still hasn't come close to Pixar's biggest hits in Japan. I think the difference might be from its lower appeal to adults and seniors, being mostly geared towards attracting families.

You bring up a good point that stuff like the Cars franchise and Monsters University fall below Pixar's usual standard, and perhaps this turned off some of their adult audiences who had formerly supported the brand. Add to that the fact that Illumination's films are clearly seen as funnier and more entertaining to kids (more gags and cheap humor), and you also have families opting for their films over Pixar's.

I noticed your numbers for the top grossing films of the year tend to be a little higher than Box Office Mojo's numbers. Are they wrong?

Not wrong, necessarily, just not updated property. My figures are definitely more accurate since I follow the daily/weekly exchange rates and follow films well past their runs in the Top 20.

BOM simply stops tracking films before official tracking ends and very rarely goes back to update them. BOM also adjusts everything using the most current exchange rate, which can greatly result in different numbers.

$39.5 million at the time of its final tracking. I haven't seen any reports from Disney or domestic sources updating its total beyond its final tracking figure, but it'll probably increase by ~0.02% (to $39.6 million) when its final figure is Eiren's Yearly Results in late-January. 0.02% is the average increase from final tracking figure to final gross figure.

On the Top Grossing Films Chart I update every week, you'll see either [E] or [F] for films that are no longer being tracked (in release). The [E] stands for 'Estimate', meaning it's the last figure available via tracking. The [F] stands for 'Final', meaning it's the last figure reported by a distributor or studio post available tracking. The [E] films tend to see the ~0.02% increase, while [F] films almost never change.

Rough weekend. Everything was perfectly ordinary on Saturday, but Sunday saw major declines (50%+) across the board versus last week, resulting in a host of sharp drops this weekend.

>The Miracles of the Namiya General Store debuted atop the box office as expected, though it certainly came in below expectations, especially after the pre-sales were reported. Based on the novel of the same name, director Ryuichi Hiroki's latest sold 167,787 admissions across 342 screens.

The debut is alright but considering the strong marketing and critical response, it could have been better. Still, if the film is as tear-inducing as some reviews say, it'll probably have strong legs, so a solid total may still be in play. At the moment, I'd say it's aiming for ¥1.5 billion ($15 million).

>Asahinagu debuted in second place, thanks to the steep decline of the holdovers, selling 94,043 admissions on 148 screens. This is one of the highest ranks a Toho Video Division release has achieved -- at least tied for the highest since none have ever been #1 -- so I'm sure Toho is perfectly please, especially since it debuted comfortably above ¥100 million.

>Dunkirk is surprisingly having pretty poor legs, even if everything dropped hard this weekend. After its solid debut, a total around ¥2 billion ($20 million) should have been attainable, but it's probably going to have to settle for about ¥1.7 billion ($15/16 million) instead. I have to say this one disappointed.

>Sekigahara crossed the ¥2 billion milestone over its fifth weekend of release, and has sold over 1.6 million admissions so far. Toho had a rough summer this year, so a respectable total here for a late-August release has likely out a few smiles on faces there.

Sunday is the 1st, so tickets will be discounted nationwide. So far, Saturday's ticket sales are average at best, so I'm not anticipating drops to be particularly impressive again this weekend, but Sunday could definitely make up for a slow Saturday and then some.

>Ajin: Demi-Human will easily debut atop the box office, and appears good for an opening above ¥200 million (~$2 million). The live-action adaptation of the manga is directed by Katsuyuki Motohiro (Bayside Shakedown fame).

>A Dog's Purpose finally made it to Japan. The film is receiving a modest release, but pre-sales are decent and I doubt it comes in below ¥100 million (~$1 million). After looking at its foreign box office results, after China's incredible total, Japan will probably end up as its second biggest international market.

The bottom of the Top 10 will be pretty competitive this weekend. There are several limited releases opening this weekend and since it's not going to take too much to make the Top 10, the ninth and tenth positions are available to a host of films.

>Ajin: Demi-Human easily debuted atop the box office, and will come in comfortably above ¥200 million (~$2 million) as well; it may have even exceeded ¥250 million (pretty solid for a film this time of year). The live-action adaptation of the manga is directed by Katsuyuki Motohiro (Bayside Shakedown fame).

>A Dog's Purpose finally made it to Japan. The film only received a modest release, but that didn't stop it from performing nicely and probably coming in second place. After looking at its foreign box office results, after China's incredible total, Japan will probably end up as its second biggest international market.

>Hidden Figures makes a surprising debut in the Top 10. It was one of many limited releases that opened this weekend, playing on 62 screens, but it appears to have comfortably secured a Top 10 spot by selling an impressive ~36% of its available tickets..

>The last two spots in the Top 10 are pretty much a toss-up as expected, so I have them as ties. I don't recall a live-viewing in recent years being included in the weekend rankings -- they're typically a one day viewing during a single showtime (as it the case here), plus I'm uncertain if they're eligible -- but AAA's Dome Tour 2017 certainly sold enough tickets (84% sold) across its live-broadcasts on just Sunday (one day) to be a real contender, especially since ticket prices were likely very high.

When Kubo open in Japan? Seems like it could well there.

I know you asked this over a year ago (13 months to be exact), but it finally found a distributor - a good one, too.

Gaga will release Kubo and the Two Strings on November 18th (14 months after its worldwide release). It's not uncommon for Japan to get films from 6 months up to an entire year from their initial worldwide release [see A Dog's Purpose (8 months) and Hidden Figures (9 months) which opened just this weekend], but a year plus is pretty rare.

It's currently listed as a limited release (28 locations), but Gaga tends to give most of their films a wide release (100+ screens), so there's time for a more significant release for Kubo. Gaga also has clout as a distributor of many acclaimed films (imported and domestic), so their reputation should help generate some interest.

Kubo and the Two Strings will be the first theatrical release for Laika in Japan (at least beyond two or three locations).

>Ajin: Demi-Human easily debuted atop the box office, selling a nice 209,928 admissions across 341 screens. The live-action adaptation of the manga, directed by Katsuyuki Motohiro (Bayside Shakedown fame), comfortably came in above ¥250 million, which is more than acceptable for this time of year (October is generally the weakest month of the year). I'd expect a final total around ¥1.5/1.6 billion ($13-15 million).

>A Dog's Purpose finally made it to Japan, eight months after its initial debut elsewhere around the world. The film sold a solid 139,000 admissions over the weekend frame across 311 screens, and 169,259 admissions since opening on Friday. There's a fair chance that it'll reach the ¥1 billion (~$10 million) milestone, making Japan its second biggest international market after China's incredible total.

>Hidden Figures made a surprising, and welcomed debut in the Top 10. Arriving nine months after its initial release last year, it sold 42,739 admissions on just 63 screens over the weekend frame, and 54,652 admissions since opening on Friday. The successful debut in limited release could result in Fox/theaters expanding it, but expansions are typically rare, so we'll have to wait and see.

EDIT: >Digimon Adventure tri. Ch. 5: Coexistence rounds out the Top 10 in its debut, knocking Despicable Me 3 out of the top 10.
