[Revenue]
1 (1) Ted (Toho-Towa) Week 3
2 (3) Strawberry Night (Toho) Week 2
3 (2) Life of Pi (Fox) Week 2
4 (-) Jack Reacher (Paramount) NEW!
5 (4) Les Miserables (Toho-Towa) Week 7

Ted was down just 10% in admissions from last weekend and has exceeded the 1 million admissions mark after three weeks.

Jack Reacher had the best debut among the openers taking in ¥227,774,400 ($2.6 million) with 187,422 admissions over the weekend [321 screens]. That's a pretty low avg. ticket price on opening weekend, so it had to have skewed older.

Les Miserables has become the highest grossing musical of all-time with "about" ¥4.2 billion ($48 million) after seven weeks, topping The Phantom of the Opera's ¥4.1 billion total. It was also announced that the soundtrack had first weeks sales of 40,000, which is very strong for a movie soundtrack.

Yellow Elephant debuted very well for a Showgate release earning ¥85,497,630 ($950,000) with 63,653 admissions over the weekend [236 screens].

One Piece Film Z has reached a staggering ¥6.61 billion ($75 million) after eight weeks.

Post Re: Japan Box Office (2013) Weekend Ranking
I'm a little behind in reporting this, but better late than never.

Studio Ghibli and distributor Toho originally planned to release both Hayao Miyazaki and Isao Takahata's new films as a double feature this Summer. The two co-founders did this same thing back in 1988 when they released My Neighbor Totoro and Grave of Fireflies on the same day.

However, unfinished storyboards for Isao Takahata's The Tale of Princess Kaguya, his first film in 14 years, have post-poned the film's release to this Fall (likely November).

Hayao Miyazaki's new film, The Wind is Rising, his first film since Ponyo 5 years ago, is still set for this Summer and a release date on July 20th was just announced yesterday. The film's tagline is "The Wind is Rising... We Must Live".

Showa Day (4/29)
A Day to Reflect on the Events of the Showa Period. Showa Day also marks the beginning of Golden Week (4/29-05/05), one of the three busiest weeks of the year.

Films marked with an asterisk are ones to keep an eye on (potential to do well above 1 billion yen).

I was going to include the month of May, but a number of high profile films scheduled for the month don't have a set date yet. For the rest of February's release schedule, you can check it in the second post of the thread.

10 (8) Yellow Elephant (Showgate) ¥35 million ($375,000), Week 3

Die Hard should finally bump Ted out of first place, but it's so-so opening day on Thursday of "almost" ¥100 million ($1.1 million) doesn't lock it up with the way Ted has been performing.

-Les Miserables: ¥4.8 billion ($54 million) after nine weeks.

02/16
Saturday Estimates

1 A Good Day to Die Hard (Fox) ¥181 million ($2 million) Day 3
2 Ted (Toho-Towa) ¥105 million ($1.2 million) Day 30
3 Zero Dark Thirty (Gaga) ¥66 million ($720,000) Day 2
4 Strawberry Night (Toho) ¥59 million ($645,000) Day 22
5 Brain Man (Toho) ¥56 million ($610,000) Day 8
6 Les Miserables (Toho-Towa) ¥46 million ($500,000) Day 58
7 Life of Pi (Fox) ¥41 million ($450,000) Day 23
8 Jack Reacher (Paramount) ¥31 million ($340,000) Day 16
9 Tokyo Family (Shochiku) ¥21 million ($230,000) Day 29
10 Yellow Elephant (Showgate) ¥15 million ($165,000) Day 15

Good numbers for Die Hard. I see a 4-day total close to ¥500 million ($5.5 million). That's less than it's predecessor, but is a respectable gross. The film is playing in 342 theaters.

Impressive for Zero Dark Thirty. It's ranking is largely helped by the average drops for the holdovers due to last week's inflated weekend (it will probably fall in rank for the weekend frame), but it's performing very nicely. Maybe a 3-day total of ¥150 million ($1.7 million). The film is playing in 164 theaters.

Jack Reacher was really hit hard with Die Hard opening, dropping over 60% compared to last Saturday. Both films are skewing very old, 40/50+, so it makes sense.

Just found this on eBay:

Does that mean it's coming out in Japan on 1st June? or is it the 26th February? or have I just read the poster incorrectly.

It's June 1st. I checked some movie sites and they confirm it, too. I don't know when the release date was announced, but Shochiku is releasing the film now that Warner Bros. is no longer a exhibitor in Japan starting next month.

Weekend Estimates were scattered so I didn't bother posting an incomplete list today. Die Hard 5 though looks to have exceeded ¥400 million ($4.5-5 million) for the weekend frame, for a ¥550-600 million ($6-7 million) 4-day total. A nice start that should give it ¥2.5-3 billion ($30-35 million) if WOM isn't too bad.

Post Re: Japan Box Office (2013) Weekend Forecast
If Les Miserables records a ninth-consecutive week in the Top 5, it'll join these films:

Most Consecutive-Weeks in the Top 5 (Since 1998)

Spirited Away (2001) - 21
Armageddon (1998) - 18
Avatar (2010) - 16
Howl's Moving Castle (2004) - 16
Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace (1999) - 16
Deep Impact (1998) - 15
The Last Samurai (2004) - 13
Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (2002) - 13
Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone (2002) - 13
The Matrix (1999) - 13
Bayside Shakedown: Save the Rainbow Bridge! (2003) - 12
Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (2004) - 11
The Green Mile (2000) - 11
M:I-2 (2000) - 11
Bayside Shakedown (1998) - 11
Thermae Romae (2012) - 10
Ponyo (2008) - 10
Crying Out Love, in the Center of the World (2004) - 10
Finding Nemo (2004) - 10
Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King (2004) - 10
Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones (2002) - 10
Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (2002) - 10
Monsters, Inc. (2002) - 10
Saving Private Ryan (1998) - 10
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 (2011) - 9
Alice in Wonderland (2010) - 9
Toy Story 3 (2010) - 9
The Borrower Arrietty (2010) - 9
Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End (2007) - 9
Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix (2007) - 9
Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (2005) - 9
Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith (2005) - 9
Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers (2003) - 9
Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl (2003) - 9
Spider-Man (2002) - 9

And if it joins this list tomorrow morning, it'll be the only one among them to have never ranked #1 during the weekend.

It currently shares the title of Most-Consecutive Weeks (8) in the Top 5 without ever being ranked #1, so tomorrow's ranking could give it the record. The film is also now, I believe, the highest grossing film ever to never rank #1. I'll double check this to make sure tomorrow.

2 (1) Ted (Toho-Towa) Week 5
3 (2) Brain Man (Toho) Week 2
4 (3) Strawberry Night (Toho) Week 4

7 (6) Life of Pi (Fox) Week 4
8 (4) Jack Reacher (Paramount) Week 3
9 (7) Tokyo Family (Shochiku) Week 5
10 (-) Masquerade (CJ Entertainment) NEW

Die Hard 5 ended Ted's reign at the top of the box office bringing in 318,154 admissions and ¥402,436,350 ($4.4 million) over the weekend across 643 screens. Since opening on Thursday, it's 4-day total exceeded ¥600 million ($6.5 million+).

Zero Dark Thirty did alright for itself earning 60,657 admissions and ¥76,409,500 ($825,000 ) on 164 screens over the weekend. The top two demographics were males in their 40s and and women in their 30s. Its also reported that WOM is very strong among those on twitter, so some great legs could be expected.

Masquerade, the third most attended film of all time in South Korea, surprised a bit and managed a Top 10 debut. Playing on just 91 screens, the film did 41,290 admissions and ¥49,109,300 ($525,000) for the weekend.

And as I reported last night, Les Miserables has indeed become the highest grossing film of all-time to never rank #1 at the box office. In addition to this, by ranking 5th in it's ninth week in release it has joined the list I posted above in this accomplishment and is the only film to ever stay in the Top 5 for 9-consecutive weeks without ever ranking #1 as well.

Next weekend doesn't have any film looking to open with more than ¥75 million, so Les Mis has a pretty good shot at making it 10-consecutive weeks in the Top 5. The first weekend of March isn't that strong either (bigger releases are coming mid/late March).. maybe it can manage 11-consecutive weeks with the help of Anne Hathaway's likely Oscar win.

"Everybody raise a glass".

Records so far:
>Highest Grossing Musical of All-Time.
>First Film with 9-consecutive weeks in the Top 5 to never rank #1.
>First Film to reach ¥5 billion in gross without ever ranking #1. TBA.

Weekend Forecast

ImageImage

1 (1) A Good Day to Die Hard (Fox) ¥260 million ($2.8 million) Week 2
2 (2) Ted (Toho-Towa) ¥170 million ($1.9 million) Week 6
3 (3) Brain Man (Toho) ¥85 million ($1 million) Week 3
4 (-) A Story of Yonosuke (Showgate) ¥80 million ($870,000) NEW! [200 Theaters]
5 (5) Les Miserables (Toho-Towa) ¥70 million ($760,000) Week 10
6 (4) Strawberry Night (Toho) ¥65 million ($710,000) Week 5
7 (-) A Chair on a Grassland (Toei) ¥60 million ($650,000) NEW! [207 Theaters]
8 (6) Zero Dark Thirty (Gaga) ¥55 million ($600,000) Week 2
9 (7) Life of Pi (Fox) ¥45 million ($490,000) Week 5
10 (-) Silver Linings Playbook (Gaga) ¥40 million ($440,000) NEW! [56 Theaters]

Some smaller openers are being released late Feb/Early March this year with several bigger releases (Oz, Doraemon 33, and Platinum Data in particular) planned for mid-March so the box office will be weak until then.

Between the openers, I'm guessing A Story of Yonosuke comes out on top despite being released by Showgate. The theater count is solid, reviews are good, and it has quite a bit of interest on various movie sites.

Projected Totals (¥1 billion+) after Sunday:
-Les Miserables: ¥5.05 billion ($57 million) after ten weeks.
-Ted: ¥3.3 billion ($36.5 million) after six weeks.
-Strawberry Night: ¥1.85 billion ($21 million) after five weeks.
-Life of Pi: ¥1.7 billion ($19 million) after five weeks.
-Die Hard 5: ¥1.2 billion ($14 million) after two weeks.

Outside the Top 10:
-One Piece Film Z: ¥6.8 billion ($76.5 million) after eleven weeks.
-Jack Reacher: ¥1.0 billion ($12 million) after four weeks.

Post Re: Japan Box Office (2013) Weekend Forecast
I was bored tonight so I put together this interesting list:

Highest-Grossing Directors

1. Hayao Miyazaki - ¥95.6 billion (7 Films)
2. Steven Spielberg - ¥91.3 billion (16 Films)
3. Kunihiko Yuyama - ¥68.4 billion (15 Films)
4. James Cameron - ¥59.2 billion (5 Films)
5. Chris Columbus - ¥47.8 billion (5 Films)
6. Katsuyuki Motohiro - ¥44.7 billion (7 Films)
7. George Lucas - ¥34.8 billion (4 Films)
8. Michael Bay - ¥34.3 billion (6 Films)
9. David Yates - ¥33.9 billion (4 Films)
10. Tim Burton - ¥32.5 billion (9 Films)

-Robert Zemeckis - ¥32.0 billion (9 Films)
-Peter Jackson - ¥31.4 billion (5 Films)
-Gore Verbinski - ¥29.5 billion (4 Films)
-The Wachowskis - ¥27.4 billion (4 Films)
-Eiichiro Hasumi - ¥25.3 billion (6 Films)
-Roland Emmerich - ¥25.1 billion (6 Films)

Only films that earned ¥1 billion+ or had accurate data available were included in the totals. Lee Unkrich would also have been on the list (¥34.6 billion), but I excluded him since all but one of his directed films included a co-director.
