And we have yet another great weekend in terms of holds.

>Loved Like a Flower Bouquet pulled off an excellent second weekend increase to repeat atop the box office for a second time. I mentioned on Friday that the lack of romance films over better part of 6-months, or more, is likely benefitting this one greatly. In general, romance films tend to have strong legs, but we might see this one develop amazing legs moving forward. It's very likely to reach ¥1.5 billion (~$15 million), and might approach/reach ¥2 billion (~$20 million). This will, without a doubt I believe, become Tokyo Theaters, Co.'s highest grossing film ever.

>Demon Slayer: Mugen Train enjoyed another amazing hold to add to its incredible stability since early/mid-January. Unless it suddenly begins to drop heavier, a total above ¥38 billion (~$365 million) is about guaranteed now. And while it will of course take a couple more months, its chances of reaching ¥40 billion (~$380 million+) remain fairly good.

>Jukai Village performed much better than its pre-sales were suggesting. It might have missed a ¥100 million (~$1 million) opening weekend, mostly depends on its average ticket price, so I'd consider it a bit of a disappointment if it does. But given this film is likely more dependent on evening/night showings (which don't exist right now due to restrictions), I don't think we can call it an outright disappointment. Its predecessor developed great legs this time last year, so let's wait and see what it does in the long-run versus trying to analyze its opening.

>Endless SHOCK's estimate is more of a guess. If its average ticket price is "normal" or even a bit high, it should come in around the estimate tomorrow. But this film could very well have event tickets that will cause its avg. ticket price to skyrocket and come in noticeably higher than estimated. Without knowing this though, we'll just have to wait to see where it came in at tomorrow, at least hopefully. Being a Toho Video Division distribution, it may take an extra day to get the actual.

I'll wait until the actuals to analyze the other films. Across the board though, nearly everything continues to have either good or even excellent legs.

I believe you are forgetting "In This Corner of the World" which grossed around 2.8 billion yen through its main run into 2018. That film was distributed by Tokyo Theatres and they were part of the production committee, though not high up in the list.

Endless SHOCK is a special 2 week screening of a stage play which got cut short due to COVID restrictions last year. It's another title with a 3,000 yen special screening ticket charge, so "average" ticket prices will be high for it in contrast to other films.

Thank you, ultimatemegax.

And I do forget, quite often, that In This Corner of the World was a Tokyo Theaters, Co. release and not Shochiku.

Then Endless Shock is likely to come in 40/50% higher than the estimate above, assuming its average ticket price is similar to Takizawa Kabuki Zero 2020's ¥2,891.

Godzilla vs. Kong is scheduled for May 14th. April is too crowded this year to take advantage of Golden Week, otherwise they likely would have put it there.

Japanese Trailer (Some new scenes):

idk if I just forgot or something, but idk where the new scenes at? lmao

Also, a lot of people are speculating and theorizing the movie saying that Godzilla and Kong will only fight once to an even fight then will fight Mechagodzilla together or something like that.
Welp, if it'll be like that, then it would end up like any other VS movies. But I will still watch it with low expectations. At least lower than the other modern Godzilla movies.

Another excellent weekend.

>Loved Like a Flower Bouquet not only managed to top the box office once again, but it did so with an outstanding second weekend increase. In addition to this incredible sophomore frame, its weekdays were also very strong, suggesting this one's in for quite a long-run. I don't want to project ¥2 billion (~$20 million) yet, but it definitely has the potential to reach the milestone.

>Demon Slayer: Mugen Train performed excellently once again, selling an additional 92,000 admissions over its seventeenth-weekend in release, bringing its cumulative admissions up to 27,071,239. With the sort of holds it's been having for the past three weeks, weekdays and weekends alike, it's going to easily reach ¥38 billion (~$365 million), and could very well still have that ¥40 billion ($380 million) mark in its sights.

>Jukai Village's opening weekend remains an estimate, but its 3-day total plus last weekend's previews is listed in the ranking. It sold 118,055 admissions over its first three-days plus previews. The opening weekend itself is going to come in lower than last year's Howling Village, but the 3-days are very close, with Jukai coming in just 3% lower. That includes previews for Jukai, of course, but they didn't account to much last week. It's hard to say right now if it'll have the legs of its predecessor, but it should at least be aiming for ¥1 billion (~$10 million).

>Endless SHOCK's weekend, and total, remains an estimate, but I adjusted them both upward to account for its higher ticket prices. This is a two-week only release, so it's possible that its number won't be reported until it concludes its run, but I'll update them if they are before then.

>The Cinderella Addiction also remains an estimate. Will update it as well when its numbers become available.

No additions this week unless Jukai Village made it when its weekend figure becomes available. I wouldn't bet on it, but its 4D showings could have been enough to just get it above the mark.

¥500 million ↑ (COVID-19 Expansion)

NOTE: Any figures for a film that earned below ¥1 billion that is no longer playing are rough estimates. It's rare for final figures for films earning below that mark to be reported, but I'm going to include them this year given the circumstances. Just remember: They're rough estimates.

Legend:
¥10 billion+ (Uber-Blockbuster) / ¥5 billion+ (Blockbuster) / ¥3 billion+ (Hit) / ¥2 billion+ (Respectable) / ¥1 billion+ (Commercial Success)

Do you think there would be any attempt to push Demon Slayer over ¥40 billion if it gets ¥1 billion or so shy of the milestone on its own? It would be a historic (and likely never to be repeated) event.

Maybe? There's really no need other than to say it earned ¥40 billion, but perhaps that'll be reason enough. There was no real reason for Spirited Away to reach ¥30 billion other than to claim that's what it earned, but it played long enough to hit the mark anyway (and the Oscar win helped in this regard). Similar thing with Your Name. hitting ¥25 billion, most likely, given it played for 10 months.

And they may not even need to push it there. It's going to be playing at a minimum of three more months at least and could leg it out ¥40 billion naturally.

I hope the announcement on feb 14 is the next season! I even hope that instead of an announcement it would be premiering the anime itself! I could just imagine fans flocking the cinema again once the official announcement commenced

118-Day Cumulative Total: ¥37,262,382,650 ($356.8 million) / 27,126,239

Note: Mon.-Fri. are rounded estimates (excluding Holiday Mondays), therefore adding up each day won't equal the actual total.

Remarkable Wednesday as it heads into the holiday tomorrow. We haven't had a holiday land on a Thursday in a while (I don't think 2020 had any), so since all the weekend releases are opening tomorrow (Thursday), a lot of people may have Friday off as well, essentially making this a 4-day holiday weekend (Thur.-Sun).

I'll post the top 10 estimates for tomorrow's holiday results. Key openers include First Love (we've seen that audiences may be craving romantic films, so this could do well) and Detective Conan: The Scarlet Alibi (a 3-week compilation film preparing audiences for The Scarlet Bullet in April).

How much is the chance that they will make an annoucement about season 2 for DS at this upcoming 14th Feb event?

An announcement regarding the anime series is "expected" during the festival, but Aniplex hasn't said one way or another. So expect an announcement, as it's very likely, but leave some room for no announcement as well.

And while any announcement is likely to be a season 2, they still could have decided to continue the anime series with another film instead. The next arc is a longer one that wouldn't fit into a 2-hour film adaptation, but they could always go the Part 1 and Part 2 route with it. I would still expect a season 2 before another film, but given the first movie has become the biggest of all time by an insane margin and is still going, not to mention helping theaters out tremendously last year (especially Toho, the co-distributor of the film), there is undoubtedly a lot of pressure on them getting the next film in theaters sooner rather than later.

There are various paths they can take in continuing the story. Perhaps they'll do season 2 first and have it lead into the next movie, like how season 1 lead into the first movie. We'll know in a few days!

Very likely I think
I mean, it depends whether on when did they started the production. Because it is plausible that they started the production of the movie with season 2 since the movie took longer to release. But even with that, I do think they would be able to release season 2 this year because of how ufotable does things.
I.E.: UBW season 1 in 2014, and UBW season 2 in 2015. Same with Tales of Zestiria the X.
They always have 1 year apart on their season cours.
And I also want to add that all 7 Kara no Kyoukai movies were released in 2007-2009. That's why I think that ufotable will be able to release season 2 of KnY in just a year.

Breaking the next big arc into 2 movies is not a good idea at all because it will kill the hype and people have to wait for more than one year to watch the 2nd part, no climax.

Japanese films with the intention of having 2 parts are typically produced at the same time (as a single film), and are released within 6-8 weeks of each other. This allows the bulk of the audience to have time to see the first part before the second part with little delay, in addition to allowing both films to play together for audiences to check out at their leisure. There are a lot of example of this, and Warner Bros. is doing this again this year with the final Rurouni Kenshin film(s).

It's just an option they *could* take. I don't think they'll go this route in this particular case though since they're dealing with the biggest property of all time in the country, not to mention the strain it'd place on theaters and the impact it'd have on other studios and their releases.

Chances are high it's going to be season 2. They likely negotiated a major deal with one of the big broadcast stations for a primetime slot. The reruns (already on streaming and home video) and specials for season 1 that were airing in primetime this past fall/winter were pulling in up to 10 million viewers.

It is unlikely that they were working on Season 2 at the same time as the movie. The movie most likely had a rough schedule. They had to finish Heaven's Feel 3 at the same time. Keep in mind that Ufotable only has one "production line" meaning that practically everyone at the studio works on every project besides key personnel.

UBW and Tales of Zestiria were just one season split into two cours. Both had very rough schedules. Especially UBW second cour. Demon Slayer first season was actually the first TV anime in years from Ufotable that had a decent schedule, but even that suffered from lack of staff.

The good news is that Heaven's Feel is now done which was a massive resource sink. They haven't announced anything else so we could assume they are mainly working on the next Demon Slayer project. Although I am curious if any plans for a Tsukihime anime might exist. I am not a strong believer in Fate route remake or a Hollow Ataraxia adaptation. Maybe Katsugeki/Touken Ranbu movie that was announced years ago?

October this year seems the most realistic release date for a TV anime. If things are rough they might go for a split cour. The only thing I wish is that the schedule is the best it could be so the people working on it will not suffer from unreasonable conditions.

From what I remembered, Spring Song was done by several outside animators while Mugen Train was entirely done by the studio. And ufotable is known for producing several movies in a short time (KnK) so it is still likely that they can still pull it off.
They also have been producing yearly cours starting from 2012-present. If I remember correctly, they also released Tales of Zestiria the X season 2 (jan 2017) and Katsugeki/Touken Ranbu (July 2017) as well as Fate Heaven's Feel 1 (oct 2017) in the same year. All three are incredibly God-tier in animation.

So them doing the same this year (or rather last year) isn't that far-fetched.

No... Ufotable always relies on freelancers. I would say both Heaven's Feel 3 and Mugen Train are about 60-70% in-house staff while rest are freelancers. Practically everyone from ufotable that worked on Heaven's Feel 3 also worked on Mugen Train, including the director of Heaven's Feel Tomonori Sudo as an Animation Director and the action storyboarder of Heaven's Feel Takahiro Miura as a storyboarder. Neither of them participated in the first season of Demon Slayer. (Well Sudo did a little bit)

Most of Kara no Kyokai are short films and you can't really compare their quality to ufotable's modern theatrical output. And as I said producing two cour series was extremely diffucult for them. The schedules were horrible and the quality suffered. 2015-2017 was the dark time of ufotable. Several people ended up leaving the studio after the disaster that was God Eater's production. Saying that Tales or Katsugeki had godlike animation isn't quite right. I feel like people are quite often blinded by Ufotable's composite meaning all the post processing effects, cgi, lighting and all that stuff. That was definitely still excellent in Tales and Katsugeki, although Tales went a bit overboard with the effects.

When judging animation quality you should be looking at the quality of the drawings outside of the big action scenes. How does the average scene look like. You look at something like UBW or Tales where practically all effects are digital and not hand-drawn. Then you compare that to Heaven's Feel where you have some absolutely gorgeous hand-drawn effects. (I like effects animation  ) Heaven's Feel is how all their projects could look like if they had time to work on them and not rush them.

Ufotable has gotten stronger in the past couple of years by hiring new excellent animators and obviously the old ones getting even better. Now with Heaven's Feel done I would love to see what they are capable of if they dedicate their time to one thing and have a decent schedule.

This project is pretty much dead at ufotable right now. The historical advisor for the TV series even tweeted that he wished it would happen, lol.

Welp, I meant "they can" though
They "can" do it. But, when they didn't do it, and instead just took their time, the result is Heaven's Feel.
They "can" pull off the 1 cour every year and still deliver some of the greatest animations. And they could also take their time in animating and just cement themselves as the greatest animation studio of all time.

Also, while I like to see what ufotable can do with just one project on their hands, I doubt they'd do that. They would probably finish KnY season 2 first before announcing another type-moon adaptation (hoping for Mahoyo but Tsukihime is very likely to happen first) or maybe they'd animate another Tales series.
What is very unlikely is them only focusing on 1 project at a time.
