The difference though is rather small and I think its just because DC24 has too many showtimes at "non-usual" locations. The final number should be higher than DC23 and yesterday.

DC23's Sunday was a Toho day too so that probably plays a part.

Yes, thanks for bringing that up, I had forgotten.

Also, the handicap of having most urban theaters close by 8/9pm definitely had an impact this weekend. The extra shows in the morning and day helped (and is why it started so strong), but the Detective Conan films do better in the evening.

Having Little/no shows after 8/9pm hurts Sundays the most. About everything looks down again this Sunday versus Saturday. That isn't normal. Sunday is almost always up for most films under normal conditions.

It still might break the franchise OW record (revenue being more doable than admissions), depending on how it did outside of the usual locations, but if it's a bit short, that's fine. And thanks to its much higher Friday, its 3-day will probably be a new record for the franchise, so it's still in good shape to become the highest grossing film in the series too. (Only has Rurouni Kenshin as big competition this year during Golden Week.)

I'll update the hourly tracker when I wake up properly.

Seems like 315-320K today, that will probably be 525-550K admits and 735-775M gross. Only 2.15B weekend. BOOO. :P

That's roughly, maybe slightly less, than projected going into the weekend. And only the third film in history to earn over ¥2 billion over its 3-day weekend. And it possibly broke the franchise opening weekend record (and the 3-day record is about certain) and April Opening Weekend Record. All whilst having a handicap of limited/no evening/night showings at the vast majority of theaters.

I know you're joking, but expectations often get way out of hand when a big film opens (even if it's breaking records). Always wanting more and more. (Like the ¥3 billion talk... yeah, that's not happening possibly ever for anything. Japan isn't a frontloaded market like that and it's very hard given the number of theaters/screens in the country)

And we can try to estimate it this weekend, but given the unique circumstances, we're still doing it without really having a good feel of what it's actually done until figures come in.

Detective Conan: The Scarlet Bullet - Daily Performance Tracker

Fri.: ¥608,000,000 ($5.6 million) / 400,000 *gross = rough act. / adm. = est.*

Post Re: Japan Box-Office: Records In Sight For Detective Conan 2
OKAY! So...

As I've said several times, the estimates for Detective Conan this year are ROUGH. Very rough. There are many factors to consider, creating a lot of room for error, either high or low. If it was a normal year/release, we could estimate it coming earning something closer to Crimson Love Letter (DC22). And that *could* still happen, and it'd knock it down a few spots on all the lists posted. So don't be surprised if it comes in a it lower when actuals are released tomorrow.

But... what makes it possible that it came in a bit higher than DC22 despite selling about 30,000 less admissions at the usual locations are as follows:

1. Much higher theater count (a new record), many of which aren't tracked that may have lowered how much the usual locations accounted for overall.

2. A higher average ticket price due to all the premium formats. (This will boost revenue, not admissions.)

3. Little/no evening and night showings at most usual location theaters. Most of the usual locations are in urban prefectures, and most of them are still closing by 8/9pm. But theaters in rural prefectures are mostly on regular business hours, meaning their share after 8/9pm can be higher than expected and make the usual locations admissions represent a smaller share of the overall admissions.

4. COVID-19. It hasn't had nearly as much of an impact on the Japan Box Office as almost all of the rest of the world, and you can argue the box office has been mostly unaffected for 7/8 months now. At least that's true for everything except family films. Family films have continued to struggle a bit as they're more cautious and more unlikely to go out still. Detective Conan isn't a family franchise, but it does have some family appeal that keeps it from being a frontloaded fanbase-driven franchise. If enough families decided to stay home this weekend, and they really boost the numbers out in the rural prefectures the most, then that will have a negative impact.

The 23rd film in the popular Detective Conan franchise (known as Case Closed in the United States) is a hit in Japan. Detective Conan: The Scarlet Bullet had a great opening weekend in its native Japan as it brought in $1.2 million. As it was only shown on 38 IMAX screens, that means each screen brought in $32,000. That’s the third-highest IMAX opening weekend since the pandemic began behind Demon Slayer and Shin Evangelion.

So about 130 million yen from IMAX screens. That looks low to me, but they're saying it's high.

Just noticed this has the same total for third and fourth weekends, do you know the updated total?

IMAX results aren't reported on much unless they're big. It's not common for domestic films to get a lot of IMAX screens due to Hollywood blockbusters tending to get them more frequently. But alas, no big Hollywood films are being released.

Obviously no surprise it's behind Demon Slayer, and being behind Evangelion on IMAX also isn't too surprising. Eva is a fan-driven series, and those films always perform better on premium formats due to the fans willingness to pay any price to watch them. Detective Conan has a large fanbase, but it's more broader reaching and brings in some families and just casual audiences in general who prefer standard showings for the cheaper pricing.

For reference, Detective Conan is playing at 372 standard theaters, all 84 4D/MX4D theaters, all 38 IMAX theaters, and all 5 Dolby Cinema theaters. If it did around ¥130 million on IMAX, it likely did around 2.5x that on 4D/MX4D (just as expensive and usually more seating too). Then add in maybe 1/5 of the IMAX on Dolby Cinema, and I'd estimate it earned up to ¥500 million from all 127 premium locations.

While it could still come in higher I'm surprised that Conan didn't see increase again with those additional boosts but then again Corpse mentioned late night handicap which could have been a big one.

Regardless that's a HUGE opening for Conan and still a good hold for series even if it stabilizes at this number.

It just depends on where it comes in, but if it's around the estimate, it'll have broken the franchise opening weekend record and April opening weekend record. And the 3-day is 99% certain to have broken the franchise's 3-day record, as well as being the third highest 3-day opening weekend of all-time.

Also, assuming it broke 1 million admissions over the weekend frame, it'll become only the second franchise in history to have 4 films sell over 1 million tickets in their opening weekend, only behind Harry Potter with 5 (its first 5 films).

We'll know in a few hours if all this is true, and if so, what else could it have done? Only expectations seem to be missed, and those are almost always missed these days.
