Frozen II looks to exceed the ¥10 billion milestone tomorrow, its 40th-day in release, on the last day of 2019. It didn't get there as fast as its predecessor, or ten other films, but reaching the milestone after 40 days with the only holiday support in its run beginning just last week is quite impressive. And it technically hasn't had one national holiday during its run yet -- the first will be this Wednesday.

It will also become the third fastest sequel to reach the mark. This isn't as notable of an achievement since original films are more likely than sequels to find uber-success in Japan, but it's pretty impressive as well.

Yes. Most films Will still be up versus last week, but that number will look small compared to every other day this week. And the grosses themselves will be much smaller compared to every other day this week.

Post Re: Japan Box Office: New Year Week - Daily Estimates (Tues.
New Year's Eve is a huge day for celebration in Japan--the biggest such day of the year--with countless activities and customs, so it's the weakest day during the holiday period since going to the movies isn't on the mind of most.

Wednesday will be huge, probably beating Monday. I'm betting on it being the biggest single day of the entire holiday period, including Saturday and Sunday, since it's not only New Year's Day, it's also a national discount day AND Ladies' Day.

Thursday and Friday are holidays as well (Bank Holidays), so they'll be quite big as well, just not nearly as big as Wednesday (but bigger than Tuesday).

If Wednesday (Lady day) is 1st of a month, can a double discount be applied?

No. A national discount day falling on a Wednesday basically cancels out the discount that females get on Wednesdays, but it still brings out more people.

10 (42) 7.48 million - Star Wars: The Force Awakens (2015)

Note: All-Time Rank in (Parenthesis)

Frozen II will make both lists after this upcoming weekend, knocking Toy Story 3 off the Revenue Chart and Star Wars: The Force Awakens off the Admissions Chart. It'll either settle for third or fourth (probably third) on the Revenue Chart, and also third or fourth on the Admissions Chart (very likely third place here). It's on track to edge past Weathering With You (eventually).

The day just began, expect major fluctuation until the afternoon. Plus, it's 9AM on New Year's Day. Give people time to get up and moving. The day will pick up in a couple hours, I promise.

But remember, and please remember so I don't have to repeat this part any more... Christmas = Stronger for younger skewing films. New Year = Stronger for older skewing films. The more adult-driven films will see much stronger results from this point on. Frozen II skews younger. Not completely younger, but young enough that it won't have the percentage boosts that some of the other films will have.

LPLC: That should be fairly accurate.

Corpse, what is for you the most impressive performance at the Japan box office ? Titanic ? Frozen ? Harry Potter ? Your name ? And why ?

Tough question, and one I've asked myself every time a film performs phenomenally well.

All the ones you listed are certainly worthy of being in the discussion, with the exception of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone. Don't get me wrong, the first Harry Potter was an incredible success, it's just that it had a huge fanbase (the books were already huge in the market) in place prior to opening. I'd replace it with Princess Mononoke. Mononoke broke the opening weekend record, became the biggest film ever (albeit shortly lived), and set the standard of how successful animated films could truly be. Hayao Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli were on their way to becoming the behemoths they became, and Mononoke was the film that established them as such.

Titanic. It's obviously worth naming here for its many box-office achievements beyond just becoming the highest grossing film of all-time at the time (and it's still #2), such as being the first film to gross ¥20 and ¥25 billion at the box-office, and still holding the record for most consecutive weeks in the Top 10 with 40, among several other records. The only thing that prevents me from naming it my most impressive performer is James Cameron. Cameron had already established himself in the market as a household name and had a huge hit in Terminator 2: Judgement Day, so some expectation for Titanic to do well was already there. Of course, no one expected it to do what it did, but the fact that a sliver of expectation was there just rules it out for me.

I have two films I'd consider for my most impressive performance that I don't think can be decided on:

Frozen is my first choice and one that should easily be considered the most impressive ever by anyone. Prior to it, Walt Disney Animation films weren't particular successful in the market. They weren't able to produce a single blockbuster in the market, and then Frozen comes and delivers one of the most impressive runs ever. It more than doubled any other Disney film at the box-office (animated or live-action), which is still true today, and goes on to become the third biggest film ever and just the second to ever reach 20 million admissions.

Your Name. is just as equally impressive in my eyes and is my other choice. Hayao Miyazaki set the precedent for animated films grossing outstanding numbers, but not before giving his co-founded studio an established name, alongside his own. Your Name. came from a director (Makato Shinkai) who never even had a film gross ¥1 billion at the box-office before and was merely a niche name (and didn't have to tease retirement). And after Titanic, it has the most consecutive weeks in the Top 10 with 29, which is crazy considering how many films receive a theatrical release in Japan nowadays.

But this is only among the top grossing films in the market. There are others, such as Bohemian Rhapsody (it has actually managed a leggier run than either Frozen or Your Name.), that delivered absolutely all time performances. Ted, as odd as it is to include, is another film that despite its box-office being far below any other film mentioned in this post, really, really stunned everyone with its excellent performance. And there are a couple more I'd toss in there.

Also, it's very probable that older films like E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, Antarctica, Jurassic Park, or smaller ones (but still blockbusters) like The Bodyguard and Ghostbusters could be in consideration if more data was available for them beyond a total. Not to mention even older films from the '50s or '60s (e.g. Tokyo Olympiad, Emperor Meiji and the Great Russo-Japanese War, heck even Godzilla) were bound to have had phenomenal runs, but I suppose we'll never know regarding them.

Japan is surely weird market... this new year week, moday it still can jump high, then tuesday new year eve it was supposed to be flat or decrease from last week, then it turned out +45%. Now, new year day so far it seems to has lower jump than the eve....
But overall the top 10 today so far only Star Wars has an increase....

Everything will be end up increasing today versus last week, except for My Hero Academia (Its core base seems about spent). It's just taking time.

Should lower my expectation now
Wed +15% =1.78
Thu +15% =1.78
Fri +15% =2
Sat and Sun +15% = 5.5
Total after this weekend = $103M
Does it still in line with your $140M projection?

Ok, I don't want to make everybody feel annoyed by talking about the same thing again.
Now I only want to ask one question "Has it happened before that the New Year Day (1st Jan) is not the biggest day for movie business during the New Year week"??
Because this year both SW9 and F2 number on Wed (New Year Day) are lower than number on Monday.

Today $1,6M for frozen 2 ( I predicted $3.5M I was far ...), so $98M-$99M by 5th January I guess

It's more like $2.0/$2.1 million yesterday. Remember that the % increase is compared to the same day last week (in admissions), not the prior day. It's going to be at $98/99 million going into the weekend, so $105 million or so after Sunday is still the target.

I'll have Wednesday Estimates up in a bit.

I was looking into this last night and earlier today. It does seem to becoming a more common trend where New Year's Day business is being spread out more evenly among the other days. Early admissions for Thursday are roughly on par with yesterday so far too, and will probably deliver similar numbers.

And Mondays in general have also grown stronger in recent years, and have begun to rival Wednesdays. In fact, Monday was bigger than Wednesday several times this past year, and as you mentioned, that was the case this week too. I'm gong to keep a closer eye on this this new year.
