The former two were in the Top 10 for a while, so their numbers whilst there (or near the Top 10, say Top 12/15) should be available in here. But if they, or any film, falls well outside the Top 10 and fail to reach ¥1 billion, you usually just have to wait for studios to release final figures, which can be rare for sub-¥1 billion earners.

I've been pretty ill the last couple of days, and definitely didn't feel like logging in here for a Weekend Forecast or anything. I'm feeling noticeably better though, and will have the Weekend Actuals and regular updates up on Monday as usual.

Yeah, it's primary audience are teens (high school-aged) and young adults, giving it a strong 16-30-year-old share, very similar to the same demographic as Your Name.

What did you think of the film, without spoiling anything?

I'll be honest I only got the broad strokes when I saw it in Japan and it didn't strike me as good as YN, but the visuals were stunning and I still found the climax very tense. But seeing it with English subs, a lot of the detail that I'd never be able to get without them came through, and it really clicked. It's a great touching movie. Not on the level or Your Name, but still very enjoyable, and one of the best of the year.

The gap between Weathering and Ponyo is even more widen this week (¥1.35B difference vs. last week's ¥1.07B), I'm actually very pessimistic about this. I don't think it will cross ¥15B now, but I just read this news "the film will have special screenings that will allow cheering, singing, shouting, cosplay, and pen lights in Tokyo, Osaka, Nagoya, Fukuoka, and Hokkaido beginning on September 15."

I'm beginning to doubt that it'll reach ¥15 billion as well, but it's not too late. Its Monday-to-Monday hold was very impressive, the first week-to-week fully out of summer vacation, and if it can manage holds like that moving forward, then it could get there.

And you mentioned the special screenings. September 15 is about the start of Silver Week (a holiday frame, just not as beneficial as others like Golden Week or Obon), so it could sees potential gains next week. Silver Week is a lot more prominent now than it was ten, or even five, years ago.

We'll see. It's doubtful, but it's still perhaps a bit too early to say with much certainty.

Weekend Actuals and Chart Updates will be posted later this evening.

So, a lot of the weekend numbers (the weekend grosses themselves) haven't been reported yet. All of the cumulative totals have been though. I'm going to wait maybe 30 more minutes to see if more come in, and while I usually just wait a day to post the Weekend Actuals and Chart Updates when this happens, I want to get this post out this evening since all the cumulative totals have been reported.

If I do post them here in a bit, I'm going to provide placeholder estimates until the actuals are released.

>Kaguya-sama: Love is War, the live-action adaptation of the manga of the same name, debuted atop the weekend box-office, selling a respectable 255,000 admissions over the weekend frame across 291 screens; it sold 361,846 admissions since opening on Friday. This is a solid opening, and certainly a welcomed one before Silver Week begins next week. Legs should be pretty good, and a total above ¥2 billion ($20 million) is likely.

>Weathering With You falls to second place after reclaiming the #1 spot last weekend. Makato Shinkai's follow-up to Your Name. became the highest-grossing film of 2019 on Sunday, surpassing Disney's Aladdin. The uber-blockbuster sold a further 190,000 admissions in its eighth-weekend of release, and has sold 9,139,915 admissions since its debut. While it performed fairly well in its first full week outside of summer, it didn't display a hold strong enough to suggest it'll go on to have amazing holds for weeks/months to come; rather, it should enjoy solid holds for the remainder of its run, and exit the weekend top 10 sometime in mid/late-October. Where is it headed? Despite its path becoming clearer this weekend, there's another holiday frame coming up soon (Silver Week) that should benefit it pretty well (especially with the special screenings it's receiving at the same time). Its chance of reaching ¥15 billion ($140 million) and entering the all-time top 10 have decreased drastically, but a total around ¥14 billion ($130 million) with ~10.5 million admissions is still realistic and would earn it the twelfth position on the all-time list.

>The Lion King isn't handling the post-summer box-office as well as I would have expected, but it's still doing decent business. In its fifth-weekend of release, Disney's live-action remake sold an additional 131,000 admissions, and has sold 4,152,517 admissions since its debut. This is the first weekly result that changes its trajectory a bit, and it's unfortunately downward a bit. ¥7.5 billion ($70 million) is probably out of reach now, but it can still exceed a very respectable ¥7 billion ($65 million) and possibly hit 5 million admissions.

>One Piece Stampede took an expected hit post-summer, but honestly, it continues to hold better than its more frontloaded predecessors. It seemed likely to crawl to the ¥5 billion milestone, but as you can see, it got there faster than expected, and quite easily, too. There's no question now that it will outgross One Piece Film Gold to become the second biggest film in the franchise. Look for the anime's 20th anniversary celebratory film to come very close to ¥5.5 billion ($51/52 million) and exceed 4 million admissions.

>Toy Story 4 is still handing on, but it took a big blow in the post-summer box-office. It's so close to the ¥10 billion milestone, but it's still probably going to take two more weeks to get there. But as I've said about every week now for a month... despite it being fairly frontloaded and continuing the trend of Pixar's sequel decline, reaching ¥10 billion is always a major achievement. Also, while I have posted it a couple times already, the film has sold MORE tickets than Toy Story 3. After nine weekends in release, the fourth entry in the Toy Story franchise has sold 7,632,931 admissions (vesrus the 7.2 million of Toy Story 3!).

Okay, so... The Lion King (2019). Animated or no? BOM has it listed as an animation film AND under Disney's live-action reimaginings. But I don't like to rely on BOM to define things, and this clearly shows they don't know what it is either?

I haven't seen the film, and I honestly don't know too much about how it was made. I read that they didn't use any motion capture, but that doesn't equal animated. Is ANY part of the film live-action, or is it 100% without a doubt ALL animation (the plants, the rocks, the sky, the grass, etc.)? If the consensus is "it's complicated", then I'm not going to add it. If it was made with VR or AI technology, thereby removing the act of animating, in my view, then I also don't believe it should be considered an animated film.

I don't mind how it's counted, because 2019 The Lion King is a bad thing. It is animation though. They included one thing that wasn't animation in it as a trick though.

Other than that, it is not based on live action footage.

Yeah everything in this is CGI with actors giving voice pretty much a standard CGI movie, no motion capture or any live humans/creatures in the movie. They might have used real landscapes in a couple of scenes but those are indistinguishable.

I guess the conceit is that it's live action a la The Jungle Book even though that actually had live action elements (right?).

Sad that Toy Story 4 wasn't able to eke out $100m in the end.

I keep noticing after all these weeks that Godzilla: King of the Monsters still as an [E]. Is it still in a few theaters? Or have the final numbers simply not been released?

It's still playing in two theaters; one in Iida, Nagano, and the other in Kure, Hiroshima. It leaves the Iida location on September 26th, but the Kure location hasn't determined when they're losing it yet.

Monday is a national holiday, Keiro no Hi (Respect for the Aged Day). As a result of the holiday Monday, weekend actuals won't be released until Tuesday next week.

Hit Me Anyone One More Time is the latest comedy from renowned director Koki Mitani (The Wow-Choten Hotel, Once in a Blue Moon, The Kiyosu Conference), and will easily debut atop the box-office with a satisfactory debut. Besides his previous film, Galaxy Turnpike, most of his films open around the ¥500 million mark, making him one of the more reliably consistent, and successful, directors in the market.

Just watch weathering, definitely better than Your name, though my mom prefer Lion King.

But as I've said about every week now for a month... despite it being fairly frontloaded and continuing the trend of Pixar's sequel decline, reaching ¥10 billion is always a major achievement. Also, while I have posted it a couple times already, the film has sold MORE tickets than Toy Story 3. After nine weekends in release, the fourth entry in the Toy Story franchise has sold 7,632,931 admissions (vesrus the 7.2 million of Toy Story 3!).[/size]

That's interesting. Why is the ticket price for TS4 so much less than 3? The general trend for average prices has been up for the decade.

Lack of 3D tickets. Toy Story 3 (just like Alice in Wonderland) came out when the ATP was highly inflated by the 3D. Also, as much as I know, ticket prices in Japan tend to be rather steady.

Well prices in general in Japan are steady, if not declining.

Omni gave you the short answer, but to expand a bit...

3D was incredibly popular in Japan from 2010-2012, so pretty much every 3D release had incredibly high average ticket prices due to 3D shares regularly coming in over 75/80%. 3D quickly lost its popularity though, with shares plummeting to 20/30% during the mid-years of this decade, before rising a bit in recent years to around 40% or so today on average.

Ticket prices in Japan have indeed been stable for decades, though they have seen regular gains year-on-year since 2015 due to theaters increasing general ticket prices, in addition to other premium formats such as IMAX and 4DX gaining some traction. Still, 2018's average ticket price was still only 4% higher than 20 years ago (and 17% compared to 30 years ago).

And in Toy Story 4's case, it only had a significant number of 3D screens for a couple weeks before losing the vast majority of them to early-August releases (such as The Lion King). Its 3D share was also just around 28% when it opened. Which isn't surprising since family films typically see the lowest 3D shares.

>Hit Me Anyone One More Time performed quite well, and is a return to form for director Koki Mitani. It has a good chance of exceeding the ¥3 billion (~$30 million) milestone, which would be a great way to kick off the Fall box-office season.

>Kaguya-sama: Love is War held great in its sophomore frame, and this result makes reaching the ¥2 billion (~$20 million) very attainable now.

>Weathering With You also enjoyed a great hold, one that it very much needed to keep the ¥15 billion ($140 million) milestone on the table, although it's lingering on the edge still. If anything, it's very likely to outgross The Last Samurai (¥13.7 billion) now and secure the 12th position on the All-Time List.

>No Longer Human performed a bit below expectations.

>All the films ranked 7th-10th are very close. They're all likely within 10,000-15,000 admissions of each other, so they're really too close to call which film ranked where, especially the debuting A Dog's Journey since we can't reference its average ticket price yet (but I doubt it's very high, especially compare to the others, so I'm expecting it to come in 10th in revenue).

>Toy Story 4 likely fell out of the Top 12, but I'll continue to include it in the weekend forecasts/estimates/actuals until it reaches ¥10 billion.

NOTE: Remember, Monday is a national holiday, so Weekend Actuals will be delayed until Tuesday evening. I'll post Monday estimates (for a 3-day weekend) tomorrow. Holiday Monday's typically average 40% or so of the weekend's gross, with films targeting families/children/teens sometimes coming in closer to 50%.
