So, we have an incredibly close battle for the #1 spot this weekend. Just over 2,000 admissions separated Weathering With You and The Lion King (with The Lion King on top) at the usual locations (70-75% of the market), and while that would suggest that The Lion King defended its #1 spot due to its higher average ticket prices, Weathering With You plays much stronger in the unaccounted for rural prefectures and likely came out on top in admissions. It's really too close to call, but I'm going to give the slight edge to Weathering With You, especially since I'm more confident in it reclaiming the #1 spot over the weekend in ticket sales.

>Weathering With You, whether it reclaimed the #1 spot at the weekend box-office or not, took the initial post-holiday (Obon Festival) hit quite well, and achieved the best hold in the Top 20/25 films. It still appears on course to approach/reach the ¥15 billion ($140 million+) milestone and enter the All-Time Top 10 Films, but it will need even better holds over the next couple of weeks to do so.

>The Lion King, again whether it comes in at #1 or not, is still performing well, though this weekend's drop does indicate it's unlikely deliver exceptional legs from this point forward and suddenly become a ¥10 billion contender. It's likely going to finish between ¥7-8 billion ($65-75 million), and while that's ~35% less than Disney's other live-action remakes, it's still impressive and nothing to dismiss as disappointing. It really was unlikely to match the others due to featuring animals (I know, I know, but it's a real reason), and this result is very, very good.

>Ossan's Love: Love or Dead debuts in third place with a satisfactory opening weekend. It was a little frontloaded (Friday was oddly its biggest day), but I wouldn't think much of it yet since we're still firmly in the summer. It's aiming for a total around ¥2 billion ($20 million).

>One Piece Stampede enjoyed a good third weekend hold, and its third weekend is actually higher than both Film Gold and Film Strong World. And since its cumulative total is outpacing its predecessors (besides Film Z) by a comfortable margin due to Obon Festival last week, I'd say it's very close to locking up ¥5 billion ($45 million+) and will probably outgross Film Gold to become the second biggest film in the One Piece series, behind only Film Z.

>Toy Story 4 continues its good, but not great, performance after its record-setting opening weekend. It's still going to exceed the ¥10 billion ($93/94 million) milestone, just much later than it should be. And I'll wait another week to see if it has a final week of summer vacation boost, but it's doubtful to outgross Toy Story 3 and Finding Nemo now to become Pixar's biggest film in the market. This is only "disappointing" after its opening weekend. Before its opening weekend, a ¥10 billion total would have been exceptional.

However... this does continue the ongoing trend of Pixar sequels receiving mixed reviews and declining from their predecessors in the market. Besides Cars 2 (not a big franchise in Japan anyway), every Pixar sequel has declined.

>Rocketman had a very mediocre debut, which is kind of surprising to me since Japanese audiences generally support musicals/music-inspired films. Legs will probably be solid, but this opening doesn't really allow it to gross much even with good legs. A total of ¥1 billion ($10 million) is doable, but not guaranteed.

>Ni no Kuni: The Movie, based on the popular modern RPG series, basically bombed. If it does come in above ¥100 million for the weekend, that's "okay"... well, not really, it's still a poor debut. It'll probably have a bit of frontloaded as well due to its fanbase and absence of younger viewers once it reaches September, so ¥500 million ($5 million) could be as high as it goes.

>Aladdin will indeed enter the All Time Top 20 Films, but it'll be very short-lived since Weathering With You will overtake it pretty soon.

Rocketman bombing is indeed a surprise. Is Elton John not that popular in Japan? Several musically-based films have disappointed this year, from A Star Is Born to Mary Poppins Returns.

Yeah, none of them ended (or will end up) doing very well.

Anyway, back to this weekend... Weathering With You did rise back to #1 in weekend admissions as I was predicting, but it wasn't enough to beat The Lion King (which experienced a spike to its average ticket price, likely due to the loss of more 2D showings) in weekend revenue.

Weekend Actuals and charts will be posted here soon.

Split #1 films this weekend:

>The Lion King achieved its third-consecutive weekend atop the weekend box-office, though drops to second place in weekend admissions, selling a further 290,000. It experienced quite the spike to its average ticket price, likely linked to a cut in 2D showtimes. The film exceeded 3.2 million admissions after 17-days in release. Its projected total could still stay a bit, depending on how it behaves once summer vacation is over next week, but it's looking good for a total around ¥7.5 billion ($65 million+).

>Weathering With You wasn't able to climb back to the #1 spot in weekend revenue, but it did rise back atop the weekend box-office in admissions, selling an additional 305,000 admissions in its sixth-weekend of release. Makoto Shinkai's latest exceeded 8 million admissions after 38-days in release. It will overtake Aladdin in a couple of weeks to become the #1 film of 2019, and is targeting a total around ¥15 billion ($140 million+). How close to the mark, or how much above it, depends on how the post-summer vacation business affects it next week.

>Ossan's Love: Love or Dead settles for a respectable third place debut, selling 239,000 admissions over the weekend frame across 325 screens, and sold 389,533 admissions since opening on Friday. A pretty good start here, and it should be able to gross around ¥2 billion ($20 million).

>One Piece Stampede experienced the second biggest third weekend in the franchise, after only One Piece Film Z, and has exceeded 3.1 million admissions after 17-days in release. So far, it's displaying better holding power than I would have expected, and a total north of ¥5 billion ($45-50 million) is guaranteed now. It should even make a realistic run closer to ¥5.5 billion ($50 million+), which will make it the second highest grossing film in the series (again, behind Film Z).

>Toy Story 4 is still doing well, but well has become its Achilles heel, so to speak. Following its record-setting opening weekend, it just hasn't been able to deliver any remarkable holds, simply "good" ones, and will ultimately have to struggle a bit to reach the ¥10 billion milestone. It's also impossible now to outgross Toy Story 3 (¥10.8 billion) or Finding Nemo (¥11.0 billion), which was a very likely scenario when it opened. It has, however, sold more admissions than Toy Story 3, so that's very impressive. And a ¥10 billion total is never anything to dismiss, it's incredible, but there was a decent amount of money left on the table here.

>Rocketman couldn't get off the ground, posting a mediocre debut by selling just 96,000 admissions over the weekend across 321 screens, and sold 135,105 admissions since opening on Friday. Musical/music-inspired films generally perform well in Japan, but there have been a string of them disappointing ever since Bohemian Rhapsody's phenomenal run. The film is unlikely to reach the ¥1 billion ($10 million) milestone.

>Ni no Kuni: The Movie hasn't had its weekend figure released yet, but its 3-day cumulative total above is its actual. It sold 110,640 admissions since opening on Friday. This is a very disappointing number, and I wouldn't expect much more than ¥500 million ($4-5 million) or so here.

>Detective Conan: The Fist of Blue Sapphire received its 4D expansion in its 20th weekend of release, but failed to come near the Top 10. However, with the many weeks of unreported numbers in limited release combined with its earnings this weekend in 4D, it exceeded ¥9.18 billion ($84 million) to become the highest grossing film in the long-running franchise (it became the most attended back in July). This also marks the seventh-consecutive year that a Detective Conan film has outgrossed its predecessor.

Weathering with You is Japan's representative for Oscars Best International Feature Film. I don't think it'll nominated in that category but this will increase a chance to be nominated in Animated Feature.

Just read this on AnimeNewsNetwork, let's play spot mistakes

"Makoto Shinkai's new film Weathering With You (Tenki no Ko) jumped back from #2 to #1 in its sixth weekend. The film sold 305,000 tickets over the weekend, and earned 420,665,000 yen (about US$3.97 million) from Friday to Sunday. The film has so far sold 8 million tickets for 10,734,722,500 yen (about US$101 million) since opening. The film is now the #9 highest-earning film of all time in Japan."

So Dragon Ball Super Broly actually did ¥4 billion in the end?

Is there a source I can read that up on?

I saw that. Very interesting. It's the first animated film that Japan as submitted since Princess Mononoke.

I also don't believe it'll amount to anything, but it's a notable decision at least.

Well... there's actually just one 100% mistake, and that's the Friday to Sunday mention. It's of course suppose to be Saturday and Sunday only.

But there are some misleading/unclear claims:

1.) The USD figures are wrong when you really get down to it, but they are accurate if you would convert the JPY total to USD at the time the article was published. This is where inaccurate USD figures very often come from, and the method that BOM practices.

2.) "the #9 highest-earning film of all time in Japan" is technically wrong. It is, however, the #9 highest-earning DOMESTIC film of all time in Japan. So... just a lack of clarification.

3.) "jumped back from #2 to #1 in its sixth weekend", again, just isn't clarified. In Japan, the box-office weekend rankings are based on admissions, so it did go from #2 back to #1. But, it remained at #2 in revenue. This one isn't as wrong as my second point since Japan does officially rank films by admissions for the weekend, but it's not wholly true as a standalone claim. Split #1 films (revenue and admissions) is pretty rare, but it usually happens a couple times a year and I always make sure to mention it in my posts.

I intentionally didn't bother mentioning this because I wanted to see how long before you guys caught the updated total in my posts. It took less than 12 hours! Good job guys.

Also a little gossip about Ni no Kuni, LV5 want to borrow Ghibli's name which at first Ghibli agree. But LV5 thinks of this as IP/franchise (that can be interprete as sequel, more products, more money-making plan) which isn't align with Ghibli's vision so Ghibli cut tie with it. LV5 isn't wrong though, Ghibli vision will not survive in nowadays business.

I don't know too much about the history behind Ni no Kuni, but always figured Studio Ghibi was largely just involved in the art and animation of the series.

So, this is the final week of the summer box-office, so I'm going to post daily estimates before things begin to slow down in the coming weeks/months.

Hey Corpse! Just joined to ask, WWY is going for a total around the same as Ponyo, and they have the same release date, could you make a weekend comp between them? I'd be interested to see how it's tracking.

It's actually tracking behind Ponyo a bit, but I think the gap will narrow once September rolls around. Ponyo skewed a little younger than the typical Ghibli film, and while it didn't collapse post-summer vacation, it did drop more than many other July Ghibli releases.

I'll have a comparison between the two for you up here soon. :) And don't be afraid to keep posting here either!

Yeah, it's primary audience are teens (high school-aged) and young adults, giving it a strong 16-30-year-old share, very similar to the same demographic as Your Name.

What did you think of the film, without spoiling anything?
