Probably not, but it would tough not to surpass the original, at least. The first film only opened with ¥77 million ($630,000) on 60,748 admissions in October 2014, and finished around ¥400 million ($3.3 million).

The October release, again, for the sequel certainly isn't encouraging, though, and hints at Sony likely dumping it. October is by far the weakest month of the year.

Denzel Washington, while not having any notable hits or blockbusters in the market, is still a fairly reliable draw, so it's odd how Sony has treated The Equalizer films.

His draw is certainly diminishing. He used to be able to get $7m (Man on Fire, Deja Vu) or even $5m (The Book of Eli), but in recent years his actioners have struggled with $1-3m grosses (The Magnificent Seven, 2 Guns). But Flight made $9m, though I guess that was due to its Oscar status.

It appears that Code Blue: The Movie, the film adaptation of the popular TV drama, is going to deliver the biggest opening for a domestic live-action film this year this weekend, and based on the early Friday ticket sales I'm seeing*, could have blockbuster potential. The TV drama, and film, follow the daily lives of a medical team (helicopter doctors) in the HEMS (Helicopter Emergency Medical Service).

*It's around half-capacity across several showings on Umeda's 737 seat screen, on a Friday, and that's a very, very encouraging sign before heading into the weekend frame.

Code Blue TRAILER:

The Japanese film industry, while thriving with the increasing success of animated films, has been desperate for another blockbuster live-action film (franchise) since ~2012, so perhaps Code Blue will finally be the one to follow in the footsteps of Japan's two previous major live-action TV dramas turned blockbuster film franchises, Bayside Shakedown and Umizaru.

Okay, so... Code Blue did extraordinarily well on Friday. It easily earned the biggest day for a domestic live-action film since 2012, even bigger than the fourth and final entries in the Bayside Shakedown and Umizaru franchises that were released that year. I'm estimating it grossed about ¥425 million ($3.8 million) with around 320,000 admissions yesterday.

Saturday and Sunday should both best that number (if this typhoon isn't too affecting...), and while I'm not going to predict it, it very well could debut near ¥1 billion. There hasn't been a domestic live-action film debut above ¥900 million since 2010's Umizaru: The Last Message.

And only four domestic live-action films have ever debuted above ¥1 billion: Bayside Shakedown: Save the Rainbow Bridge! (2003), Hero (2007), Boys Over Flowers: Final (2008), and Rookies (2009).

Again, I'm not expecting a ¥1 billion+ debut for Code Blue, but it's in the realm of possibility after its incredibly strong Friday results. The Weekend Forecast will be posted later this evening. Could we see a third film enter the Yearly Crown battle?

Also, I noticed it was very strong throughout the course of the entire day on Friday, suggesting it's appealing to adults of all-ages. And looking at various theaters right now (as of 5am), Saturday is looking consistently strong from open-to-close as well.

The 7-10am showings are quite full this morning (senior citizens), the 12-5pm afternoon showings are looking good (middle-aged crowd), and the 7pm-midnight evening showings are also strong (young adults).

Alright, so... Typhoon Jongdari (Cat 2) is going to hit Japan today (Saturday) after making a surprising turn going into the weekend. This is likely to deflate the overall weekend, especially Saturday, so it's going to be hard to gauge the performance of any film. The "good" news (besides ending the record heat) for the box-office is that it has deviated a bit and isn't going to impact the Kansai or Kanto regions (which represent ~70% of the country's box-office) as much, but it'll still keep some people indoors.

Storm Trajectory:
Spoiler: show
Image

Code Blue: The Movie is still going to deliver the biggest opening weekend for a domestic live-action film since 2012, by far, and if it wasn't for the typhoon, it may have come close to debuting above the ¥1 billion milestone over the weekend frame. However, even with the storm, pre-sales are very strong, and if the storm dissipates before Sunday afternoon, it's still likely to open above ¥800 million. If it does, then it could enter the battle for the yearly crown of 2018 since a total over ¥7 billion ($60 million+) would be likely, and ¥8 billion ($70 million+) would be doable.

There's not much to really say for the holdovers because of the typhoon affecting the weekend making predictions difficult, but if any of them would experience a harsh decline as a result of the storm, you can expect it to recover heading into August. 30/40% drops may not look poor, or harsh, but they would be for this particular weekend which typically sees much stronger holds.

Very good for Code Blue so far, up about 6% versus Friday at the same point in time, and pretty comparable with many of the other live-action films on the list above.

And that's with Typhoon Jongdari approaching the mainland. It'll make landfall late Saturday (10-12 hours from now, probably), so we'll see if it'll have more of an impact, causing the box-office to stall, as the storm gets closer.

Post Re: Japan Box Office: Weekend Forecast (07/28-29)
A few updates left, and while Code Blue has been performing extremely well, especially with a typhoon about to hit, it does seem to be losing some steam. The storm is only a couple hours away from making landfall now, and some evacuations being ordered. But while the night showings aren't weak, they're noticeably below Friday, so it's probably going to stall-out a bit in the final 3-4 hours of showings (which includes the very strong 8-9pm hour, unfortunately).

If the storm does weakens enough once on land, and goes far enough west (irregular path, this storm) before Sunday afternoon, I'm anticipating Sunday to potentially be very strong since Saturday night is being stunted.

Post Re: Japan Box Office: Domestic Live Action Box Office Histor
In anticipation for Code Blue delivering one of the biggest openings for a domestic live-action film in years, and Saturday numbers suggesting a ¥900 million+ debut (and still a chance at ¥1 billion) despite a cat 2 typhoon affecting central and western parts of the country, here's a look at the the market's biggest domestic live-action releases.

Very strong, and since Saturday night was deflated due to the typhoon (otherwise, it probably would have done 275,000+), expect a big increase on Sunday as a result, that could put it in ¥1 billion territory.

I wonder how the Disney-Fox merger which was approved by shareholders yesterday will have an impact on the Japanese Box Office like for instance how much percentage would they have combined over the Japanese Box Office.

If Disney will be distributing Fox releases in the market in the future, it honestly still won't have too much of an impact. Fox isn't very successful in Japan (at least not over the past decade+), often struggling to release more than one or two films a year that even grosses over $10 million. Once every few years Fox gets lucky (like this year with The Greatest Showman) with a hit film, but they typically average just 3-5% of the yearly box-office in the market.

Disney has been the #1 foreign distributor in Japan for a while now, but they still "only" account for 15-20% of the yearly box-office in recent years. Adding Fox's releases to their total would help them consistently remain on the high-end of that range, and sometimes break 20%.

In terms of the yearly box-office revenue, the past 5+ years has looked kind of like this:

~35-45% - Toho (they've been #1 for 12-consecutive years now)
~15-20% - Disney
~10-12% - Warner Bros.
~10-12% - Toho-Towa
~5-10% - Shochiku
~5-10% - Toei
~3-5% - Fox
~3-5% - Sony
~1-3% - Gaga
~1-3% - Kadokawa
~1% - All Others (Asmik Ace, Aniplex, Tokyo Theaters, Co., Kino, Star Pictures, etc.)

These aren't the ranges 100% of the time, but they're typically the range the studios fall in on normal years. If one of the smaller distributors on the list releases a big film that connects, then they obviously shoot up several percentage points above their usual range that year.

Toho-Towa, a subsidiary of Toho that releases foreign films, is also growing after acquiring the distribution rights to Universal releases a couple years ago. They've beat Warner Bros. the past two years, and should become the regular third place distributor for the foreseeable future.

Massive start to Sunday, up almost 30% versus Saturday, and it's definitely on track to exceed 300,000.

And if it does exceed 300,000 today, then it's likely to exceed the ¥1 billion milestone for the weekend frame. If that happens, it'll be only the fifth domestic live-action film to ever achieve this, and the first since 2009.

Also, while I don't have Sunday data for Bayside Shakedown: Save the Rainbow Bridge! or Rookies, it's likely both of them had Saturday's that were greater than their Sunday's, so it's possible that Code Blue could earn the biggest Sunday ever for a domestic live-action film.
