The list is overwhelmingly dominated by Pokemon, Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest, and Monster Hunter, so when a game outside of those four franchises does sell over 1 million copes in their first week (or close to that mark), such as Animal Crossing: New Horizons doing a whopping 1.88 million last month (biggest debut ever outside of the aforementioned franchises by a considerable margin), it's a significant accomplishment.

Also worth emphasizing that, given the release dates, none of the titles above it were likely to have a digital ratio close to ACNH's (or just no digital whatsoever), with the possible exception of DQXI from 2017, so its ultimate ranking is likely #1, 2, or 3. I only casually follow game sales but the things ACNH is doing are just insane.

True. Its first week digital sales weren't announced by Nintendo, and Famitsu doesn't track digital sales, so its overall first week is unknown. There isn't consistent or concrete data for digital sales, but the ratio for reported digital sales for some big titles seems to be approx. 65:35 or 70:30 (retail:digital). If Animal Crossing: New Horizon had a similar ratio, then its overall first week was likely between 2.4-2.6 million (likely an all-time top 3 debut as you suggested).

The most recent big release that had its first week including digital sales released was Final Fantasy VII Remake just three weeks ago, which Square Enix said sold "1 million" including digital. Its physical sales for the first week was 702,853, giving it a retail-to-digital ratio of 70.2:29.8.

Digital sales have only recently become decently popular, I'd say they only began to reach double-digits since 2016/2017. Another means of tracking the retail-to-digital ratio is when developers/publishers release their sales figures (which includes digital) and compare that to the physical figure that Famitsu reports.

Rank - Weekly Sales (Cumulative Sales) - Console
01. x66,609 (11,234,177) - Switch
02. x40,495 (2,164,537) - Switch Lite

Animal Crossing: New Horizons retains its #1 spot, and only dropped 1%. 1%. It's now the best selling game on the Switch, and is about to exceed 4 million with ease. The last game to sell over 4 million copies was Pokemon X/Y back in 2013. New Horizons is certain to reach 5 million at this rate, and could go above 6 million. It's the first game to reach these sales figures in the digital era of video gaming, so if it does do 6 million physical copies, then its overall sales could be as high as 8 million. There's a real possibility that the game may become the second best selling video game ever in the market, only behind the original Pokemon games.

Trials of Mana sold pretty well in its first week, managing to sell over 150,000 copies combined. It's nice to see a 3D remake of such an old game do well, so hopefully the game continues to do well and convinces Square Enix to revive the series with a new entry in the future.

Final Fantasy VII Remake held very well in its third week, after experiencing a massive second weekend decline (though expected). If it can have another week or two with similar holds, it'll probably go on to outsell Final Fantasy XV. I don't know if that's a bad sign for the Final Fantasy series, to have a remake (albeit a remake of the biggest game in the series) surpass the newest main series entry, but a remake selling over 1 million copies is impressive and good for Square Enix.

And finally, all the evergreen Nintendo Switch titles continue to do well (all up over last week) and add to their ever impressive totals. It could be years still before they experience any significant drop-offs.

On the hardware front, the Nintendo Switch was restocked and the console saw big gains by more than tripling their sales compared to last week. The PlayStation 4 held steady, down just a bit after receiving a nice bump from the Final Fantasy VII remake.

Pretty slow week, but a number of notable releases planned for late-April were moved to May due to the state of emergency order, so not unexpected, and the next two or three weeks may be pretty boring as well. That said...

Demon Slayer continues on continuing to dominated. All of its volumes in release continue to rank within the Top 30, and almost all of them saw an increase in sales this week. They're all (besides the most recent volume, 19, but it'll catch up) also closing in on that 3 million milestone, which is simply astounding. The only series in the past 12-years, and probably closer to 15-years, that has had any of its volumes sell over 3 million copies has been One Piece.

09. 1,942,282 - Attack on Titan (Kodansha/Hajime Isayama)
10. 1,339,973 - Spy x Family (Shueisha/Tatsuya Endo)

A few notes about these lists:

Spoiler: show
01. Any title that's highlighted is currently in the Weekly Top 50, whether remaining there since being released or resurfacing on the most recent weekly sales chart.
02. Any title that's not highlighted has fallen outside the Weekly Top 50, and the sales figure is the total that it last appeared on the weekly sales chart.
03. And while most titles won't reappear back in the Weekly Top 50 after falling off, there are two common factors that can often cause sales to increase again: a. If the title(s) has an ongoing anime and it's entered an important/popular arc, this can sometimes drive the sales of the manga. b. If the manga series itself has entered an important/popular arc, then past volumes can often see an increase in sales.
04. Consider the Best Selling Manga by Series list to be rough, but pretty accurate estimates. The top six series are practically 100% accurate, but the bottom four are less so. A manga series typically has a new volume released every 3 months on average, so the month before a new volume is released tends to be quite low and some series can sometimes falls outside of tracking range for a few weeks and require a bit of estimating until data is released.

And finally, Half-Year Sales Data is released every June, so updated sales figures will be released then. In addition, Yearly Sales Data is released the last week of November, so everything will get updated again. then. Each volume and series will naturally go up from the last tracked figures.

Corpse, do you have any TV ratings data for Demon Slayer's first season?
Was it able to reach the top 3-5 along with Conan, One Piece, Maruko and other high-ranking series?
Also do you think COVID is impacting weekly manga sales at the moment?

Post Re: Japan Box Office (And More)
It didn't achieve high TV ratings when it was airing. None of its episodes ever appeared on the weekly top 10 TV ratings charts, which usually requires a minimum rating of 2-2.5% to crack.

What happened was, after episode 19 aired, it began to pique people's interest as it became the #1 trending subject on twitter for a bit. Episode 19 is indeed something special. But there was only six episodes left in season one after that point, so it didn't really have the time to achieve a fanbase/audience that was big enough to push the last few episodes into the weekly rankings.

After the anime ended though, interest really took off as people were finally catching up on it. The awards the anime was also winning toward the end of the year certainly didn't hurt in getting more people interested either.

So the manga sales then began to explode as a result of people enjoying the anime and wanting to read through it, but more so from those wanting to see what happened next in the story by reading the volumes post where season one left off. If you look at the volume sales, volumes 7-9 (the most immediate volumes following where season one of the anime left off) have sold slightly more than volumes 3-6 due to this effect. And clearly, as the manga is still dominating the charts and selling loads many months later, its fanbase continues to grow.

EDIT: I don't believe COVID-19 is having much of an impact besides delaying the release of some manga in April/early May. Sales are very typical, and I don't believe we'd be seeing weekly increases and such if it was having a negative impact. Same applies for the video games sales--they also don't appear to be affected. In fact, you could make an argument that manga sales, video game sales could be seeing slight boons instead.

In addition to what Corpse said, it's a late night anime, and those do not get high ratings. It aired at 11:30PM, so you wouldn't find it in the same time slots as prime time shows like Naruto or morning shows like One Piece.

And like a typical late night anime it also spread its airing across a number of different stations at different times. This is different from your traditional ratings leaders (One Piece, Sazae-san, Doraemon, Conan, etc.) which primarily run on one major national station like Fuji TV, TV Asahi, NTV, or NHK at much more accessible times.

I also expect late night anime gets a relatively higher portion of viewers using digital streaming platforms (most late night anime appear on a bunch of different services) than the morning/prime-time kid/family series do.

State of Emergency has been extended to the beginning of June. The government is going to review the situation in a couple of weeks though to see if restrictions can be eased/lifted before then.

They'll extend beyond May 31 that had just announced a few days ago?

Anyway, can I compare One Piece as Pokemon and Demon Slayer as Animal Crossing?

I meant May 31st (poor wording on my part).

And short term, sure, but only for the next year or two. Demon Slayer is entering its climax this month, and is suppose to end with the release of volume 23 (likely early next Spring). Demon Slayer is literally the only manga to ever beat One Piece in sales by such a large margin and for such duration (looking to be at least 1.5-2-years on top), but it is going to end and One Piece will still be going.

And speaking of Demon Slayer, volume 20 is being released next week and is receiving a 2.8 million first-print shipment. That's the biggest shipment for any manga outside of One Piece.

However, One Piece is drawing closer to its climax. One Piece's ending has been a topic for a decade(+) now with Oda making claims that the story is x% finished every other year, but the story has made significant progress towards its endgame in the past year. Oda said a year or so ago that it'd probably end in 5-years, and that actually looks to be the case this time.

Yes One Piece seems to be heading towards its climax.

Corpse so Demon slayer will be a small series? Any plans for its sequel?

I don't believe so. I'm not caught up on it, but I believe the story will be concluded with its final volume next year. Which is fine because not every series has to be 50-100+ volumes. A lot of popular series get their original ending changed and then prolonged by the authors due to pressure from the publisher, especially if it's a big success. A recent example is My Hero Academia. Its author said the events in the second film were actually part of the planned series ending, so the manga's story has been changed to a certain degree due to this.

It's obviously good in terms of sales, even if they do decline due to quality, as in many cases the story suffers because of it.

Look at Fullmetal Alchemist. It's arguably the most-praised/beloved shonen manga ever, yet it's "only" 26 volumes long. If you've read it (or watched the anime), would you have wanted that ending to be changed or continued? No way. Its ending is perfection.

Also, interestingly since Demon Slayer is similar to Fullmetal Alchemist in many ways (a shorter, highly-praised series featuring an older sibling trying to rescue/save their younger sibling), both are written by female authors/mangaka.

Death Note is also just 13 volumes. A lot of classic, all-time great manga are on the "shorter" side (~25 or fewer volumes).

Yes I do prefer the shorter anime and manga. Agreed with Demon Slayer comparison with Full Metal Alchemist which was absolutely perfect. Death Note and Lelouch being small helped them as well. Many times the manga and anime are stretched so far out it completely goes off the rails. Another example is Fairy Tail even though I am sure they stretched it out a bit, the anime structure were great and having logical conclusion helped. The finale even though good didn't deliver the goods of the past seasons.

I wasn't aware of My Hero Academia's second movie's initial plans, will have to catch that movie soon.

We can basically call this the Demon Slayer Weekly Manga Sales. Every volume saw week-to-week increases. This is either the third or fourth time, I believe, that every released volume in the series occupied every top 18/19 positions on the charts. When it happened for the first time around the beginning of the year (maybe back in December), it was the first time since Oricon began tracking weekly sales that a single manga series occupied all the top spots.

Volumes 1, 2, and 8 all broke the 3 million mark this week, and most of the other volumes will follow next week. Outside of One Piece, Demon Slayer is the only other manga to have ever achieved a volume sell over 3 million copies.

Shueisha also announced that the series has exceeded 60 million copies in circulation this past week. Volume 20 is being released next week, May 13th, and is receiving a 2.8 million first-print run, a record for the series and for any series, again, outside of One Piece.

Best Selling Manga by Series (Top 10): 2020 [11.19-05.03]

01. 41,346,106 (New All-Time Yearly Record) - Demon Slayer (Shueisha/Koyoharu Gotouge)
02. 4,701,237 - One Piece (Shueisha/Eiichiro Oda)
03. 3,243,358 - The Quintessential Quintuplets (Kodansha/Negi Haruba)
04. 3,095,190 - My Hero Academia (Shueisha/Kohei Horikoshi)
05. 2,842,666 - The Promised Neverland (Shueisha/Kaiu Shirai)
06. 2,835,899 - Kingdom (Shueisha/Yasuhisa Hara)
07. 2,324,463 - Haikyuu!! (Shueisha/Haruichi Furudate)
08. 2,189,108 - Toilet-Bound Hanako-kun (Square Enix/Iro Aida)
09. 2,013,942 - Attack on Titan (Kodansha/Hajime Isayama)
10. 1,500,000 (est.) - Spy x Family (Shueisha/Tatsuya Endo)

Post Re: Japan Box Office (And More)
Famitsu is expected to finally update their Video Game Hardware/Software Sales for the week of April 27th-May 3rd in the next 24 hours.

And based on early retail estimates, this was a huge week, especially for Nintendo with Switch sales greatly increasing due to restocking, and thanks to their many evergreen titles seeing major increases as well. Not to mention Animal Crossing: New Horizons which is expected to have increased too (possibly a 300,000+ seventh week.....), and may have exceeded 4.2 million in cumulative (physical) sales. It's becoming increasingly likely that the game will become the best selling game of all-time in Japan, especially when digital sales are factored in.

Worldwide sales for the game exceeded 13.4 million after just six-weeks.

Q1 (April-June) 2020 is looking to be one of Nintendo's biggest Q1's ever, if not a new record for them.

Seems like cinema venues outside pandemic hotspot are re-opening.

Anyway, there's Ghibli interview, How do you live? is still 3 years away, and another upcoming film which is 3D animation "Gorō's film is based on a book or story from England, and it's a story about a very wise girl." Can you guess? I don't read English literature enough to guess that. Though his last adaptation from Sweden's Ronja: the Robber's Daughter is mixed-bag.

Post Re: Japan Box Office (And More)
Yes. After review, the government is lifting the state of emergency in 39 of the country's 47 prefectures today (Thursday) ahead of the national May 31st date. However... the remaining 8 prefectures (Hokkaido aside) account for...probably at least 85% of box-office receipts. Until those prefectures have their orders lifted, most notably Tokyo, and then Kanagawa, Chiba, Saitama and Osaka, I'm guessing the box-office rankings won't be reported. Of course, as soon as rankings begin to be reported, I'll resume posting them.

A number of June and July films have recently been delayed, too, like the newest Pokemon film, so the box-office is still unlikely to get back to "normal" until at least August. Japan has a very routine release schedule for their films, so it's going to be interesting to see where all the delayed Spring/Summer releases end up and if next year's films (and subsequent films following those...) get pushed back as well.

Numbers have been looking "good" for days/weeks though, so let's hope for the best. The Japanese already more or less live their daily lives as though there is a terrible virus they could catch before Covid-19, so I'm going to presume the country will be fine moving forward in a world with Covid-19 until a vaccine is available. But I say "good" because testing could certainly be improved.

No surprise "How Do You Live?" is still years out. I know there were rumors, even strong speculation, that they were wanting it released in time for the Olympics, but that was as likely as Hayao Miyazaki actually retiring. The man is seriously going to die with a pencil in hand, and he wouldn't want it any other way.

Assuming it does come out in 2023, that'd mean it was in production for 6.5 years. (Record budget incoming.) That's about a year longer than normal, but not unusually long because Hayao Miyazaki and his staff still traditionally hand draw everything. I believe I read before that about every minute (60-seconds) of animation takes almost a month to complete. Can you imagine that process? Working 10-12 hours a day to get 2-seconds of animation done?

I don't have a guess as to what Goro is working on. There's A LOT of English literature with "a very wise girl" that he could be drawing inspiration from or even adapting. Maybe it's Harry Potter? :mer:
