Post Re: Japan Box Office: All Time TV Household Ratings
I'm anticipating a number of films will eventually be added that achieved 20-25% ratings, but it's hard to find anything in that particular range since it's below the more record-setting numbers. I also only included the first broadcast rating for each film, because re-airings of Hayao Miyazaki films would overrun the list. And before anyone asks, Frozen earned a 19.7% rating in its first broadcast (below the 20% cut-off); and Avatar only earned a 10.3% rating in its first broadcast.

I also limited the numbers of TV Dramas/Comedies because there are dozens in the 20-25% range. If anyone wants me to include them, please let me know. And I didn't included individual episode ratings, because that'd be a very massive list. I did include the three episodes that managed to hit 40%, though.

And since the most popular anime have hundreds, or thousands of episodes (Sazae-san has like 8,000 now or something insane), and have been on the air for decades, I broke them up by decade and only included one entry per anime (their highest rated episode each decade). The list would be overcrowded only a few anime if I did any other way. If this isn't satisfactory, again, please let me know!

That's crazy! Those are legitimate Super Bowl numbers for Spirited Away lol.

Really impressive that ratings are still so robust in comparison to the US.

Post Re: Japan Box Office: All Time TV Household Ratings
Ratings have still dropped, especially once reaching the 2010s, but they're still pretty good in comparison. Anime TV ratings, in particular, have dropped noticeably hard this past decade (down about 50% on average compared to the 90s). In general, anime appeals to a younger teen/adult demographic, and those age-groups have been more acceptable of the streaming/digital age. The Top 10 Weekly Anime range from a high of 10-15% to 3-4% these days.

It's uncommon for a TV drama/comedy to achieve a 20%+ average rating anymore (though premieres or finales can still do it), but many shows still average around 15%. It's actually a bit difficult for a TV drama/comedy in a good time slot to average under 10%. But, there is sometimes that one show every few years that can still achieve those 90s/00s ratings. Hanzawa Naoki averaged 29.0% in 2013, and its finale broke the household rating record, earning 42.2%.

And it's rare for a movie broadcast to post 20-30%+ ratings anymore as well, but once again, it's still doable with Your Name. earning a 26.3% back in January. Popular movie broadcasts, especially Studio Ghibli (Miyazaki) re-airings, also tend to average around that 15% mark these days.

Go Here: https://www.videor.co.jp/tvrating/ to get a general idea of how TV ratings are in Japan today. The current ratings listed are for Sept. 03-09. Video Research has everything listed in one of their 8 categories (News, Education, Drama, Music, Anime, Sports, Films, or Other.).

It was estimated in 2015 that 80% of Japanese still watch TV on a regular basis, down only 10% compared to 2000. It comes down to Japan's aging population, and streaming and digital services taking so long to catch on in the market. Unrelated to TV, but physical sales still represent 70% of Japan's music industry as well, which is another indicator of this.

Since Spider-Man is the most popular American superhero in Japan I heard that the recent PS4 Spider-Man game is selling so well they are starting to have shortages according to this article:

So First Blood's first broadcast in Japan had 25% of the nation watching it? Wow. Incredible.

It's selling well, just be cautious about news articles like that. It's very common in Japan for gaming companies to build hype and interest in a game by only shipping a limited stock to stores for the first few weeks. Gamers see the sold out signs at stores, read/watch about it in the news, etc., and become a lot more likely to check it out later (or pay a much higher price to get it before the next shipments). Spider-Man sold about 125,000 copies in its first week as the article mentions, which was 96% of its initial shipment. 125,000 is a solid first week, but it's not a huge figure.

This exact situation happened with the release of Octopath Traveler a couple months ago.

Video game sales are very backloaded for the most part in the market, especially well-received games, so there's little reason to ship millions of copies in the first week that may sit of shelves for months (unless it's Monster Hunter, Pokemon, or Dragon Quest, since they can all move millions in a week). Some of the games in the weekly top 20 best-selling video games right now were released in 2016/2017, for example (sometimes you'll see a 2013/2014 release resurface, too). Splatoon 2 and Mario Kart 8: Deluxe have been in the Top 5/10 just about every week for over a year now.

Well, 25% of households with a television (probably 95%+ in the 80s), but yeah.

I don't have anything to compare it with from other markets, but that sounds like a lot.

Note: Cumulative totals are as of Monday (September 17th).

>Christoper Robin debuts atop the box-office, delivering quite an impressive start, selling 244,758 admissions over the weekend frame across 501 screens; and selling 440,921 over the long four-day holiday weekend. Its debut is low compared to other Silver Week openers, but it's good regardless and will likely result in a total around ¥2 billion (~$20 million), making Japan its #1 international market unless a China release is on the horizon.

>The Meg delivered a solid second weekend hold, and is on track for a total around ¥1.5 billion (~$15 million); definitely not bad considering this is the type of film that could have disappointed in the market.

>The Predator debuts in a disappointing third place, only selling 109,922 admissions over the weekend frame on 435 screens; and selling 202,803 admissions over the long four-day holiday weekend. The opening weekend is 34% below 2010's Predators. This isn't surprising given the day-and-date release, and only expect a finish around ¥750 million ($6/7 million).

>Gintama 2 continues to do very well for itself, and is very likely now to exceed the ¥3.5 billion ($32 million) milestone. The original film grossed ¥3.84 billion and the sequel is aiming for around ¥3.7 billion ($34 million) or so, which would be a remarkable 96% audience retention for a genre where sequels typically experience harsh drop-offs.

>One Cut of the Dead exceeded ¥2 billion in its thirteenth-weekend of release, and in doing so, has now earned 723 times its budget... This runaway single-shot zombie flick has become one of the most successful releases in recent memory.

>Code Blue enjoyed its eighth-weekend in the Top 10, and became the highest-grossing film of 2018. It's the first live-action domestic film to top a year since 2012's Umizaru: Brave Hearts, and will become only the fourth live-action domestic film to reach the ¥9 billion milestone. Expect a finish around ¥9.2 billion ($83 million).

>Real Girl 3D's weekend figure remains an estimate, and I'll update it when its available.

So will Fallout reach the milestone now? Seems to be very far away. I2 on the other hand should crawl to that mark eventually.

Both are in the wait-and-see stage now. If I had to predict, I think Incredibles 2 will just barely make it, and probably not before tracking ends, but only once the final figure is released months from now. And I, unfortunately, don't believe Mission: Impossible - Fallout is going to get there, which will be a shame since it'll be the first film in the franchise to miss the mark (yet come so close...).

Probably not very well since I doubt it'll ever play on more than handful of screens. It's being distributed by "Fine Films", a distributor that I've never heard of until now. It does have very strong reviews, though, so perhaps that'll help it gain some interest? We'll see. It's interesting that the only official site for the film is a Japanese one.

The title in Japan is Mandy: Hell's Road Warrior.

That's a great title. I prefer it to the boring US one.

I keep forgetting to say this since it has been four months but the fact that first Despicable Me movie in Japan having weak box office results to good home video sales and tv ratings being good reminds me of how in the US the Shawshank Redemption had weak box office results but then had good home video sales and good tv ratings.

Hey! First post, been a lurker for while. Thanks Corpse for all the work you do. Super helpful!

I was wondering if you have the box office data of Kon Satoshi films?

Welcome to the forum.

None of his films, to my offhand knowledge, received wide releases, so I doubt any of them will have any figures easily available. I'll look into them for you though!

Not much going on this weekend, and the box-office as a whole will be rather uninteresting until December. There are a few notable releases between now and December, but October and November are two of the weaker months of the year.

>Christopher Robin will claim an easy second weekend atop the box-office, and it's aiming for a very good second weekend hold, as well. My initial ¥2 billion (~$20 million) projection may end up being a tad low in the end.

>Café Funiculi Funicula is a slight wildcard and could come in above the weekend forecast. It had a nice Friday start (it actually came in at #1), but its weekend pre-sales just aren't very good. This one could be skewing toward a much older crowd (seniors), though, who largely purchase their tickets at the theater itself. We'll see.

>Skyscraper is going to bomb. Dwayne Johnson, outside of the Fast and Furious franchise which can't be credit to him, hasn't been able to find an audience in the market.

Note: Sunday is a holiday, Autumn Equinox Day, but since it landed on a Sunday this year, I don't really think it'll provide much of a boost to the box-office. The holiday will also be observed on Monday, however, so most films will still experience some benefit.
