it can still make maybe $30M-$40M in Japan alone. With a release in China and a release in Europe in 2021 it is largely possible but hey from there it's no longer depends on Japan which has already done a large part of the work.

Corpse, when you started to analyze the japanese box office (a few years ago i think already), did you think that Spirited Away would be surpassed one day ? I ask this question because I saw a lot of people on twitter who were amazed that SA was exceeded and who already thought at the time that SA's record would never be exceeded. Today we think that for Demon Slayer, but hey maybe in 10 or 20 years, the record of DS will be exceeded, who knows ?

Why are Christmas week days stronger than NY week days ? It's not logical this week only the children are on vacation, while next week everyone is on vacation, and this year NY week > Christmas week. I admit that I didn't really understand that.

This week is New Year's weekdays. Next week not everyone is on leave, the week before was Christmas week where Doremon started getting some bump from Wednesday onwards

I almost forgot to check TOHO reservation

Thur TOHO, comparing to Tue

KIMETSU NO YAIBA
16831, -26%

POCKET MONSTERS
4139, -60%

SHINKAISHAKU SANGOKUSHI
3333, -44%

POUPELLE OF CHIMNEY TOWN

Thinking ~85k for Demon Slayer

I've been doing this since 2010. ;)

No one was really expecting Spirited Away to ever be beaten. Never say never, of course, but it wasn't ever expected. It took 13-years before any film (Frozen) was even seen as a possibility, and that was only after many weeks in release. Disney did cut Frozen's run short with its home video release, but even though it would have grossed more than it did if Disney wasn't ultra-greedy, it was quite unlikely to surpass Spirited Away regardless (but it would have beaten Titanic).

The second possibility came with Your Name. 15-years later, but similar to Frozen, it came out of nowhere and wasn't seen a possibility until several weeks into its release. But ultimately, while it had a much longer run than Frozen, it just wasn't able to put up the numbers to get there and its chances of beating Spirited Away disappeared rather quickly.

Demon Slayer was a completely different beast. Instead of waiting several weeks before being considered a possible Spirited Away-dethroner, it only took a couple weeks before it became a strong possibility. And just after a few more weeks in release, it became pretty evident it was finally going to be the film to do it. And it ended up doing so in a mere 73 days (75 days in admissions), much faster than any previous film that became the all-time #1 in the market before.

Like Spirited Away, nothing is expected to ever beat Demon Slayer. Never say never, of course, but it's not expected. And unlike Spirited Away, Demon Slayer has the unfortunate advantage of a rapidly declining population in its favor to keep the record for as long as any of us are alive. You mention in the next 20 years, but in 20 years, Japan's population is projected to decline over 10%, losing over 13 million people. And in the next 30/35-years, their population could drop as low as 100 million (26 million less than today). So there's a very short window for anything to break the all-time record, in addition to just about every other sort of record.

Due to how the dates aligned, the two weeks sort of meshed together like back in 2015. New Year is falling over the weekend, so a lot of its business was pushed forward to this week, meaning this week is abnormally strong, like back in 2015. And in 2015, the holidays ended almost at the start of next week (January 5th), so the week saw sharp declines. That'll likely happen again this year, but with the extended break, the drops shouldn't be as high, but next week will certainly be weaker as the extension is intended for people to travel back to work/school over a week timeframe versus one-day.

Note: % changes in admissions versus same day last week.
Note (2): Daily estimates are rounded unless they fall below ¥15 million.

Quick note since I haven't posted Wednesday numbers in awhile. Every Wednesday is Ladies' Day, meaning female customers receive discounted ticket prices. Therefore it's usually one of the most attended weekdays (competes with Monday), but the discounted tickets do lower the average ticket prices a bit, especially for heavily-skewing female films. So that's why it's pretty close to Tuesday overall despite almost every film seeing an uptick in admissions.

On minoring now they show the number of admissions including independent theaters at the usual locations. Without independent theaters the figure was 150,161 admissions at the usual locations today. Now including independent theaters, that number reaches 163,483 admissions at the usual locations.

We don't project or predict using independent locations. So the "usual locations" doesn't include them. There are more often errors when recording the independent theaters, and they remain a work-in-progress.

The incredibly long-standing record of 55-years held by Tokyo Olympiad is very likely to fall tomorrow. When this falls tomorrow, that's pretty much it. It's broken practically every record up to this point besides a couple weekend records (8th and 10th). There aren't any more records to really seek other than the remaining weekend records for the remainder of its run, and longevity-themed records like aiming to achieve the most weeks in the Top 5/10 and such.

Indeed.

Also, Homura exceeded 1 million physical copies sold (1,004,879) this past week, selling a further 56,149 copies (down just 17% from its debut week back in October). In addition to this, as of last week, the single has been streamed 132,986,137 times. And it's been #1 for 11-consecutive weeks on the digital charts, setting a new record.

Hello! I've been here lurking since the day KnY premiered. But I've decided to make an account because I'm curious about something lol. And it's about this.

Does this make it as the best selling single of the year? I saw a top where it only had it with 200k.

I tried to predict Demon Slayer's finale, even though it's complicated with the holiday period. I think Demon Slayer will end up around $355M-$365M in Japan alone (DS may have a shot at overtaking Tenet ($362M) in just one market). Of course, if from now on, the DS run slows down more than expected it may be less, but it could also be more if we are witnessing a big 2nd week of vacation and a strong continuation after the holidays.

Speaking of which, Corpse do you think Demon Slayer will still be playing during golden week ? And if so, Demon Slayer will be practically finished by then, right ?

I don't really see why it wouldn't be playing until April/May. And unless Hollywood (Disney) changes their release strategy, there's also going to be few imported film releases, meaning local films are more likely to have even longer runs than they normally do. And films like this can play for up to a year in theaters (Your Name., Spirited Away).

I do think it's very likely they'll aim for the home video release on May 10th. It probably depends on how much it's earning at that time, but that is the date of Rengoku's birthday, so releasing the movie on video then would be incredibly well-timed and financially opportune. If it's still doing well in theaters though, the next likely home video release would probably be in July (July 14th, Tanjiro's birthday).

Another factor that could determine how long it plays is if a season 2 is announced in February. Chances are they'll have it play on major networks in primetime. They could time the home video release/theatrical run with the debut of a potential season 2 debut.

Welcome to the forum.

It is not. The year ended on December 13th, so it didn't reach 1 million before then. Not that that's anything to be ashamed of, obviously, it's just that it had only 10 weeks on the 2020 charts. LiSA did have the Top 2 Best Selling Digital Singles of 2020 though, first being Gurenge (942,691) and second being Homura (709,966). And over the next several weeks, Homura will likely outsell all but, maybe, the #1 single of 2020.

Here are 2020's Top Selling Singles & Albums (12/9/19 - 12/13/20):

Best Selling Singles 2020:
01. 1,780,306 - SixTONES vs Snow Man – Imitation Rain / D.D.
02. 1,265,582 - Nogizaka46 – Shiawase no Hogoshoku
03. 1,187,338 - AKB48 – Shitsuren, Arigatou
04. 1,155,114 - Arashi – Kite
05. 1,052,471 - NiziU – Step and a step
06. 1,048,345 (1,438,010) - LiSA – Gurenge
07. 1,030,718 - Snow Man – KISSIN’ MY LIPS / Stories
08. 948,730 - LiSA – Homura
09. 917,753 - YOASOBI – Yoru ni Kakeru
10. 878,495 - Official HIGE DANdism – I LOVE…

Best Selling Albums 2020:
01. 1,970,930 - Yonezu Kenshi – STRAY SHEEP
02. 831,962 - Arashi – This is Arashi
03. 743,123 - BTS – MAP OF THE SOUL:7 ~THE JOURNEY~
04. 717,249 - King Gnu – CEREMONY
05. 612,574 - King & Prince – L&
06. 555,120 - BTS – MAP OF THE SOUL:7
07. 534,415 - Official HIGE DANDism – Traveler
08. 315,876 - Mr. Children – SOUNDTRACKS
09. 302,081 - SEVENTEEN – 24H
10. 284,664 - Aimyon – Oishii Pasta ga Aru to Kiite

A few notes:

-Imitation Rain / D.D. is the first debut single in 14-years to top the yearly singles chart.
-SixTONES vs Snow Man is the first male act in 11-years to top the yearly singles chart.
-Gurenge is a May 2019 release, yet made the 2020 charts (including #1 digital single).
