Post Re: Japan Box Office: Weekend Estimates (03/19-20)
Doraemon's consistency at such a level for a yearly released franchise is just staggering. The fact that it will probably get its highest grossing movie with the 36th installment is absurd.

It, Detective Conan and Pokemon all managing this collectively for quite a few years almost made us forget how impressive it is but with Pokemon's decline on the movie front we were reminded that nothing is ever locked...even after several decades.

And yet Doraemon just keeps going, and going, and going remaining stable or even increasing year after year. At this rate it will get 100 movies one day...

I just wanted to check is this the highest in terms of admissions as well? Because I do remember Corpse mentioning that JPY is stronger these days.

I think the 1989 movie is currently the most attended but this should become the most attended among the recent batch of movies (2005 - ????).

No. I don't actually live in Japan (unfortunately), and it's nearly impossible to stream/download Japanese films until they're out on DVD for some time. Piracy and the like is practically non-existent in the market.

I have read most of the manga series the drama and the film is based on, though, and it's alright. There are better shojo manga series out there.

Weekend Actuals are going to be delayed by at least a day this week due to Monday being Vernal Equinox Day. In the meantime, expect an updated release schedule (April/May) to be posted tonight.

April, mid/late-April, is jammed packed this year with major releases that are going to benefit greatly from the Golden Week holiday frame; one of the three biggest box office weeks of the year.

May is usually one of the worst months of the year, since everything notable either opens in April (Golden Week) or waits until July (Summer/Obon Festival), but this year's doesn't look too bad actually. Each weekend has at least one film scheduled that should perform decently.

Whaa The Revenant gets an almost optimal release. Nice.

The 5th Wave getting a random release before Golden Week. Don't expect it to do great.

The Revenant will perform well. Leonardo DiCaprio is a decent draw in the market. Fox always pushes for their films to receive ample theaters/screens, and the film has enough award recognition needed to be of interest. And, of course, it has Golden Week a week after opening to give it a huge boost.

The 5th Wave is surely going to bomb. It'll get a wide release just because it's distributed by Sony, but it doesn't matter how many theaters it receives. If it manages to debut in the Top 10 next month, it'll fall out the following week.

Weekend Actuals are available now and will be posted soon.

>Doraemon: Nobita and the Birth of Japan claims, quite effortlessly again, another weekend atop the box office; achieving its third-consecutive.

The 36th installment in the franchise sold an additional 347,137 admissions over the weekend, down less than 20% from last weekend. Also, and quite importantly, its third weekend is the biggest in the series history, and its third week total is also the highest in series history. Also (not over yet), it exceeded the ¥2 billion milestone on Monday, it's seventeenth day in release; becoming the fastest film in the series to reach the mark.

Unless it takes an unexpected drop over the next couple weeks, this year's release is on track to become the highest-grossing film in the franchise; aiming for a ¥4 billion+ ($35 million+) total with 3.5 million+ admissions.

>The Town Where Only I Am Missing, director Yuichiro Hirakawa's live-action adaptation of the time-travel manga series, debuts in a good second place. Playing across 329 screens, the film starring Tatsuya Fujiwara sold 169,500 admissions over the weekend, and climbed to 258,438 admissions after Monday's holiday.

Warner Bros. has another domestic success on their hands with this solid debut, which could end up reaching the ¥1.5 billion (~$13 million) mark.

>The Good Dinosaur recovered from its very disappointing opening weekend by delivering an excellent second weekend hold. However, given the small numbers it's earning, it's still very likely to end up as Pixar's second-lowest grossing film (only ahead of Brave), even if it continues to have great holds during the rest of its run. It's chances of making it to the ¥2 billion (~$18 million) milestone had increased, though they're still small.

>Chihayafuru - Part 1 settles for a rather disappointing fourth place debut, selling just 146,299 admissions over the weekend on 298 screens. The numbers themselves are decent enough, but this property was expected to perform a bit better at the box-office with it moving a decent 16 million manga. And after Monday, its three day admissions reached 226,845.

This is certainly a slow start, but with teens/young adults, and especially females, being its primary audience, legs should be very good as it enters Spring Break. There's little doubt it'll exceed the ¥1 billion milestone, but it'll want to earn closer to ¥1.5 billion (~$13 million). The second half of the film opens next month.

>Precure All Stars: Sung by Everyone♪ Miracle Magic! debuts with a very predictable opening, selling 116,015 admissions across 213 screens over the weekend. Its opening is up 3% compared to last Spring's release, and down 2% compared to last Fall's release. In other words, the new film retained practically the same audience once again.

This series has been seeing two films release every year since 2009 and both annual releases were consistent ¥1 billion earners. However, the series has since peaked with each film since 2014 failing to reach the ¥1 billion milestone.

>I'm Fine! makes a very surprising debut in the Top 10. It was only playing at a few theaters at the usual locations, so I wasn't able to track it over the weekend. And despite being a limited release, it sold 42,295 admissions on 86 screens to come in ninth place.

>Assassination Classroom 2: Graduation will be teaching Batman and Superman a lesson in killer debuts this weekend. It has many sold out showings already, and has for a week with other early showtimes beginning to reach 50% capacity a day in advance.

The entire Assassination Classroom series in every medium (manga, anime, film, etc.) is concluding this Spring, so hype is understandably very, very high. Toho reported that pre-sales were outpacing those of the first film's by 46% a few weeks ago, and that one opened to ¥411 million. I think it's safe to predict a ¥500 million+ opening is happening, if not ¥600 million+.

>Batman vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice will, likely, have to settle for a second place debut, but the versus angle should reward it an opening higher than the most recent individual films in either film series. However, outside of Spider-Man and The Avengers (to a point), superhero/comic book films don't perform too well in Japan. The biggest opening weekend for a non-Marvel superhero film is The Dark Knight Rises with ¥372 million, so that'll be the mark to target this weekend.

>Kamen Rider 1 is commemorating the film franchise's 45th anniversary, and stars the very first Kamen Rider hero, Takeshi Hongo (now 67). If any Kamen Rider film is going perform outside the norm in this long-running series, it's this one. I don't think it'll be capable of opening higher than third place, but it may prove to be a threat to Batman vs. Superman for second place in terms of admissions.

>Doraemon also can't be ruled out of ranking in the Top 3 this weekend either. It'll finally be dethroned from atop the box office due to Assassination Classroom, though it could earn a fourth weekend near ¥300 million. It's a bit of a longshot, but if either Batman vs. Superman or Kamen Rider falter, then it could certainly capitalize and beat them for second place.

The only chance it had of opening at #1, before May, would have been the weekend of April 9-10. However, it would have missed Spring Break there, and then it would have taken heavy screen/theater cuts soon after due to a ton of major releases scheduled for mid-late April.

So... this weekend, in the end, was its best spot since Warner Bros. wanted it released day-and-date with the rest of the world.

It, and Assassination Classroom 2, opened yesterday (Friday) to take advantage of Spring Break, so I'll have first day estimates up very soon for both films.

Friday Estimates (03/25):
¥240-250 million ($2.2 million) / 190,000-200,000 admissions - Assassination Classroom 2: Graduation
¥125-135 million ($1.2 million) / 80,000-90,000 admissions - Batman vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice

>Assassination Classroom 2, as expected from advance ticket sales reports and pre-sales, had a huge first day and has set itself up for a huge weekend. It's very likely to exceed ¥500 million ($4.5 million+) over the weekend; and possibly exceed ¥750 million ($6.5 million+) over the 3-day.

>Batman vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice is off to a fairly slow but decent start, and the Friday estimate suggests it should clear ¥300 million ($2.5-3 million) over the weekend frame; and could come close to a ¥500 million ($4.0-4.5 million) 3-day total.

Note: Friday isn't included as part of the weekend. Opening weekends in the market are strictly Saturday and Sunday only. I believe most are aware of this by now, but it's worth stating again just in case.

Post Re: Japan Box Office: Top Grossing Superhero Films
Based on Friday's estimates, and early Saturday admissions, Batman vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice will be hoping to crack the Top 10 opening weekends among all Marvel/DC films; aiming for a weekend of ~¥350 million.

If it's really lucky, it might have a chance of beating The Dark Knight Rise's ¥372 million to become the highest opening film based on a DC property, though that appears to be an uphill battle at the moment. Below is the Marvel/DC Box Office breakdown in the market:

We're in store for quite the major weekend; easily the biggest of 2016 so far. I'll provide hourly, or bi-hourly, real-time ticket sale updates this weekend as a result.

>Assassination Classroom 2: Graduation has sold over 92,000 tickets in pre-sales at just the usual locations alone (two-third of the overall market) for Saturday. About 30% of its available Saturday admissions are already sold. That's enormous, and while it's inflated by stage greetings, it's the most pre-sales for any film since The Force Awakens (139,000) and Yo-Kai Watch 2 (117,000), and also outpaces every other 2015 release.

However, as I mentioned, its pre-sale figure is being boosted by stage greetings, so it won't see the same growth throughout the weekend as other big pre-sellers; and it'll likely see a sizable decline on Sunday. As a result, its opening should come in closer to ¥500 million (though comfortably higher) than ¥1 billion that the pre-sales would normally indicate.

>Batman vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice is going to have to settle for a distant second place. Its pre-sales are only at 48% of those of Avengers: Age of Ultron's, and also trail behind those of The Amazing Spider-Man 2's by 9%.

However, this isn't all bad news. If the film would continue to trail both films by similar margins through the weekend, it'll still come in above ¥350 million; and if it opens above ¥372 million, it'll achieve the biggest opening weekend for a DC film by besting The Dark Knight Rises.

>Kamen Rider 1 doesn't seem to be benefiting from being the 45th anniversary commemoration franchise film. So far, its pre-sales and morning/afternoon ticket sales are inline with other recent Kamen Rider releases, so expect it to debut between ¥200-250 million.

Simply a massive start to the day for Assassination Classroom 2; only trailing The Force Awakens and Yo-Kai Watch 2 from last year in start of day admissions. Doraemon and Kamen Rider 1 may remain ahead of Batman vs. Superman for the first couple hours (since they skew young), but the superhero duo will eventually pass them as the day progresses.

Assassination Classroom 2 had its second batch of stage greetings during the last hour, so it saw a huge increase in admissions (its total for the day is already on par with Friday now). Batman vs. Superman has a comfortable lead over Kamen Rider 1 now, and will overtake Doraemon in a couple hours.
