Post Re: Japan Box-Office: Demon Slayer Obliterating Record Books
Yeah, seems like it was #1. I haven't seen the exact "Demon Slayer was #1 worldwide this weekend" anywhere, but the next highest figure I've seen is the $14.4 million that Sacrifice earned in China that ARQandARG also mentioned.

So... Demon Slayer was the first Japanese film to ever top the worldwide weekend box office overs its opening weekend, and it's added a second weekend topping the worldwide box office overs its fourth weekend. Of course, we all know why, but... still an achievement to add to the growing list.

Hey Corpse, would you happen to have the list of movies by the % of the population which went to see them? I believe Tokyo Olympiad is at the top of that list, and I'd like to know the number of admissions Demon Slayer would need to beat that very very old record.

edit : Would need around 25M admissions, if I'm not mistaken.

Sure. I haven't update that one in awhile, will need to add Frozen II and Weathering With You to the list (as both hit 10 million admissions) as well. I'll post it later this evening, sooner rather than later (hour or two).

It's $195.3 million as of Sunday. The exchange rate has improved over the last week or so,, so the USD numbers having been improving. They take the total and convert it using the most recent exchange rate, which is inaccurate, versus converting the daily/weekly total using the most recent exchange rate and adding that to the previous total, which is accurate.

This happens all the time when news sources report on international numbers and why ranking films in USD becomes inaccurate, and local currency and admissions are accurate as they don't change.

I have not. I've read the manga chapters that it adapts though, and they're very good and certainly fit a movie adaptation well. But while the manga is good, the anime has taken it to another level, which is one of the reasons it's become so popular.

I mean, it has to be considered good/great to be doing numbers like this. Sure, it's bringing in a lot of people who are seeing what the hype is all about and what this movie is breaking all the records, but those people (at least most, I'd presume) had to enjoy the manga/anime enough to come out since it's required viewing/reading before seeing the movie. Unlike the vast majority of anime films, this movie isn't an original story, and instead continues where the anime left off and adapts the next arc in the story. Any negative WOM would have taken effect by now, surely.

User scores for the film:

Eiga - 4.1/5
Yahoo! Movies - 4.09/5
cinema.pia - 80
Cinema Today - 4/5

Pretty strong consensus here. 4.5 is usually as high as anything can get with user scores.

Here you go, Cynosure.

(7.887%), 10.10 million/128.05 million - Avatar (2009)

*Estimated current population.

It'll likely add a full 1% between now and Sunday to jump above Titanic.

It would need to reach 24.924 million admissions (maybe a tad less as the population may drop a tad more) to beat Tokyo Olympiad on this list. I'm not predicting it will right now, but it seems doable. A challenge, definitely; it would need to gross ~¥33.15 billion with its current average ticket price, which is possible right now.

Maybe we could compare Harry Potter 2 with Demon Slayer, this one was released in November with a 1st weekend comparable to the 4th weekend of Demon Slayer (around $ 17M) and a second weekend probably close to the 5th weekend of Demon Slayer (around $ 11M)

On top of that during his first week (excluding weekends) he made $ 10M, that's about what Demon Slayer will do during his 4th week, the only problem is that Box Office Mojo does not indicate how it worked during festive periods

It seems to me that this could be an interesting comparison, but after I do not know what you think, it is true that we are talking about a film released 18 years ago

Yesterday I said that but I think you didn't see, is it an interesting comparaison ?

Wow, so this could actually target 20% of population and take a record held for over half a century :whaa:

That would be crazy. Globally even Avatar and Endgame didn’t get that close to Titanic’s first run % iirc.

Happy to see it doing such big numbers in Taiwan. Is $20 million there doable?

Also this may have been announced already, but here are various upcoming release dates:

Singapore: November 12th
Malaysia: December 10th
Indonesia: December 19th
Vietnam: January 1st
Philippines: February
Myanmar: February
Brunei: February 4th

Jack Sparrow: There was a note about its release there. The film is rated PG12 in Japan, which is roughly the equivalent of a PG13 rating in the U.S. (and most markets), but Japan is a bit more lenient with the ratings and sometimes a R-rated film in the U.S. can still be PG12 (or R15 at worst). The film is rated NC16 in Singapore, but a PG13 censored version is suppose to be the general release version theaters are getting there? Do you know about this?

And I advise NOT looking this up too much as it'd spoil the movie in more than one way, because a simple search from me brought up a different VERY spoilerific result that I already knew thankfully. Basically, I'm thinking it could be because of a "suicide" scene. Do such scenes warrant high ratings (NC16) in the market?

Yes it's rating here is NC-16 with justification of Some Violence. The market is a little strict when it comes to ratings though there are a lot of children/families these days going to any animated movies (small country and families are confined in a small house for past 8 months without any means of external activities - traveling to neighbouring countries was very common before). If there is a suicide scene then it should be mostly because of that but I'm guessing there is some animated gore and blood on the series with scenes of demons devouring humans which would certainly give it a stricter rating here. The series is available on Netflix Singapore with the same rating and from what I recollect there isn't any suicide scene in the anime, it's mostly because of gore and blood spill.

Note that regarding Tokyo Olympiad, that the timeframe of it reaching its reported admissions is unknown. It almost certainly didn't do it in a year's time, and it's agreed that it happened over a long-period of time as it received a special (paid admissions) release in schools following its theatrical release for "educational" (some controversy surrounds it) purposes. How long and when did it reach its final 19.5 million tally? No one knows.

For confirmation of its 19.5 million admissions, here is the article mentioning it when Spirited Away surpassed it (and coincidentally, it surpassed Titanic in gross 1 day earlier to take both the revenue and admissions records): https://web.archive.org/web/20021215210 ... en_nk.html

Endgame barely overtook Avatar and that's with ten years of inflation. Same for Avatar without the inflation and 3D prices it's gross wouldn't have been as big.

On another note DS' shows for Thursday and Friday evenings 100% full. The afternoon shows are 80% full. It's only released in Golden Village theaters though unfortunately (the biggest chain here, but still only 40% of total theaters) and there are many other movies being released. The ticket price is high at $13(weekdays)/$15 (weekends) (common for a lot of anime titles here but some big releases are cheaper at $7-$9 weekdays and $10-13 weekends, the usual price).

Disappointed that there is no IMAX release here (which are in control of Shaw theaters here).

IMAX theaters were added in the second week in Taiwan. Maybe they'll do the same (or at a later point) if it sees a big debut?

Also, quick note about today's numbers: They look "normal" right now, going to be a very good Wednesday probably close to the Monday in admissions, but a little lower in gross due to the discounted female tickets (Ladies' Day). But remember that there could be some corrections made later in the day (usually after 7pm).

Theaters continue to switch back and forth from 50% capacity to 100% capacity over the weekdays (most follow: Mon., Wed., and Fri. are 100%; Tues. and Thur. are 50%), but it also varies by chain and by which days. And even then, some select theaters apart of a chain may switch back and forth as well. It's tough for the programmers to make the changes before the day begins during the weekdays. So just be a little patient if the numbers appear either too high or too low.

It's a little different here. If the movie is not released in a chain for first week it means the local distributor (in this case it will be the theater chain itself Golden Village) is not going to release the title to other chains. Imax are not available in Golden Village but let's hope this big debut will say other chains to pursue this movie.

Deadline use the current exchange rate to convert the gross which was just 103.3 on Sunday. I don't think that's right way. Corpse uses opening day rate iirc, which suffer same problem.

I use the daily exchange rate for daily conversion, which gave me $195.53mn till Sunday & $200.4mn till Tuesday.

Globally you have China, Africa and India hurting that badly. Minus these 3, Titanic was 12%.

Unlike Avatar, Endgame at least is probably over Titanic’s 1st run in raw admits. ~+7% last I saw. But more like -20% adjusted for global pop — Titanic was soooooo insane.

Wow, so this could actually target 20% of population and take a record held for over half a century :whaa:

Again I do not think that to be true. There were more IMAX and 3D screens for Endgame in 2019 than for Avatar in 2009. I highly doubt globally Endgame was bigger than Avatar admissions, because specially in Asian markets (where Endgame had huge gross gains) inflation increase have been too big. I don't think Endgame is anywhere close to Avatar's gross/admissions in Japan.

Yeah, I use the daily exchange rate to convert to USD. It's annoying when "official" sources like Deadline or Box Office Mojo (so many inaccuracies there) report on a film converting its total up to that point using the exchange rate of that same day. Exchange rates fluctuate. It takes some time and effort, but you have to convert the daily gross by the daily rate (or at minimum, the weekly gross by weekly rate) to get an accurate USD figure.

This is mostly a problem when it comes to higher grossing films or those with very long runs, as they're more prone to errors when exchange rates experiences sharp changes at some point in their runs.

Going back and double checking though, I posted $195.1 million as of Sunday, when it's $195.2 million based on my daily numbers. I'll correct it. Also, I do round when posting my numbers. This is likely why your numbers are slightly higher ($0.3/0.4 million), charlie jat, or a weekday estimate has been slightly different ($0.1 million) once or twice. A long time ago I tried to be 100% precise, but that's incredibly time consuming to do each week when reporting the top 10 (or more) and updating multiple films that are still playing but outside of the top 10 versus focusing on one individual film. For this particular film though, I may go back and adjust the numbers a bit by not rounding.
