From January 8th, it seems that tickets will be sold only on
that day at theaters in 1 metropolitan area and 3 prefectures.
When reserving a movie theater seat, please note that tickets can only be purchased at midnight (24:00 the day before) on the day of the screening.

Link for article seem more like a rumor since there is still not emergency

There is no lockdown or state of emergency anywhere yet. The Government is going to declare a stage of emergency for Tokyo, Saitama, Chiba, and Kanawaga on Thursday though. This isn't a lockdown. Japan is going to avoid a lockdown for as long as they can (don't expect one). The state of emergency will include further measures, such as businesses closing earlier and other preventative measures, to help with the rise in cases over the past several weeks. None of the details are known yet, though.

So to prepare for this, theaters in these prefectures are suspending ticket reservations (until the day-of) since they don't know what measures may be placed on them yet. If they're asked to close early, you don't want to sell thousands of tickets ahead of time that can't be refunded to your customer base. If the state of emergency in these prefectures does include theaters, expect them to close earlier (8pm has been suggested for restaurants/bars/clubs, so I'd assume a similar time) with the possibility of resuming 50% capacity and to stop selling concessions again.

Theaters in these prefectures are taking a proactive approach ahead of the announcement. But we'll need to wait and see what measures, if any, are placed on theaters in these prefectures on Thursday.

Note: Mon.-Fri. are rounded estimates (excluding Holiday Mondays), therefore adding up each day won't equal the actual total.

New Year is mostly over now, with most workplaces back open. Most schools are still on break though, evident from the day still being stronger than any weekday since the first week of December, but they'll begin classes again starting tomorrow, so the dailies will begin to drop pretty soon.

Note: The Government has already said the state of emergency will not affect any schools or universities. They'll be business as usual.

It won't be delayed. As long as theaters are open, it'll be released even if capacity limits would be announced again. The third Fate/stay night film released back in August opened under 50% capacity limits, opened on par with the previous films, and even went on to become the highest grossing film of the trilogy. The films with diehard fanbases like Evangelion aren't going to be deterred from going out.

And theaters aren't going to close, don't want anyone getting that idea. It's unlikely any businesses, including the restaurants/bars that are being specifically targeted, are going to close again.

The measures on Thursday are unlikely to be very harsh, and may not even impact the theaters in the four mentioned prefectures. We need to wait to see what's included in the announcement, but don't expect too much beyond shorter hours of operation (8pm for restaurants/bars/etc. has been discussed) and possibly capacity limits. But again, nothing indicates theaters will be impacted for now.

Japan's economy has bounced back very well since the fall, and I believe 70% of businesses are back to pre-COVID status. The Government isn't going to risk the economy slipping again any time soon, especially with vaccines expected next month, so don't expect any closures of any businesses. The situation would truly need to reach uncontrollable levels.

Japan does not have two weeks of leave because Christmas is not a holiday there. The only bump you see in the market is for New Year's. This year there was an additional week with Thursday and Friday around Christmas doing well and then New Year's weekdays with weekend all the way till this week's Tuesday were really strong.

I got this infor from Twitter:
"JP BO
In this point :
It was reported that the government will issue a state of emergency on the 7th, so the reserved-seat ticket that has been implemented from 2 days before the screening starts Pre-sale will be suspended and will be on sale from the day of viewing".

Corpse on Dec. 30th wrote:
Due to how the dates aligned, the two weeks sort of meshed together like back in 2015. New Year is falling over the weekend, so a lot of its business was pushed forward to this week, meaning this week is abnormally strong, like back in 2015. And in 2015, the holidays ended almost at the start of next week (January 5th), so the week saw sharp declines. That'll likely happen again this year, but with the extended break, the drops shouldn't be as high, but next week will certainly be weaker as the extension is intended for people to travel back to work/school over a week timeframe versus one-day.

I posted this before New Year to explain what was going to happen this week so everyone understood why the declines we're seeing now are normal. And schools started back on Wednesday, so that's why Tuesday was stronger. And we've learned that the extended break wasn't really a thing since the Government wasn't attempting to enforce it upon businesses, just recommending businesses to do so.

Also, we do need to include COVID into the analysis moving forward. Cases are rising (almost 6,000 announced yesterday) and a state of emergency is going to be announced tomorrow in four prefectures. But again, no lockdown is expected and no businesses are expected to close; rather it'll be further measures (like closing earlier) to help prevent the spread for most or all of the month. And we don't know if theaters will be requested to follow any of these measures until tomorrow.

That said, even if absolutely nothing is mentioned above theaters tomorrow, it's becoming a growing concern among the public, and some are naturally going to refrain from going out and about, which may include going to theaters.
