Where did you find opening weekend/first week data on those films?

Variety.

Although, I don't know what it earned in China.

To my knowledge it hasn't been released yet, or if it did, it made almost nothing. I have a feeling that it may get a release, but not soon.

A lot of rough rough drops this weekend. Japan's World Cup match this weekend is the likely culprit for most of them.

>Frozen remains on top for a 14th-consecutive weekend, now tying with Armageddon for the second most-consecutive weeks at #1. Spirited Away achieved 16-consecutive weeks at #1, which Frozen looks like it'll match but not beat.

Its weekend and weekly drops are also increasing, and once it falls out of first place, it'll begin to shed screens pretty quickly since it'll also coincide with the DVD release next month and many of July's blockbuster releases. It'll still most likely surpass Titanic's ¥26.2 billion total to become the #2 film all-time (and it'll still reach 20 million in admissions for the #2 spot there, too), but reaching Spirited Away's ¥30.4 billion and 23.5 million admissions is becoming increasingly difficult.

>Noah did quite well for itself, and may have still hit ¥300 million (~$3 million) depending on who saw it over the weekend. Its estimated admissions are 209,000, which give it the chance at the mark.

>Climbing for Spring did alright. Standard numbers for a live-action film this time of year.

Guess we'll always have to wonder how much more it could have grossed if the DVD release had been delayed.

Yeah, but not much more I imagine. I mean, looking at its #1 spot dominance - it seems to be coming to an end. It's at $4.1m and the next film is at $2.8m. The gap is narrowing. I guess 15 weekends at #1 and then it will be #2 REGARDLESS of the DVD release.

Well I say that with the presumption that announcement of the DVD release next month has undercut some incentive for a portion of the audience to shell out so much money to see it in theaters. It's only started dropping more harshly in the two weekends since the announcement.

But DVD prices in Japan are very high. Surely cinema is cheaper. So I don't think it has had any effect. But then, maybe Japanese are clever. The thought of seeing it once or paying much more but having the option to see it endlessly until you die..only one option makes financial sense.

Apparently rentals are quite lucrative and a cheaper option than buying movie tickets for the whole family.

Weekend Ranking [06/14-15]

01 (01) Frozen (Disney) Week 14
02 (--) Noah (Paramount) DEBUT
03 (--) Climbing to Spring (Toho) DEBUT

04 (03) Monsterz (Warner Bros.) Week 3
05 (02) X-Men: Days of Future Past (Fox) Week 3
06 (04) A Bolt from the Blue (Toho) Week 4
07 (06) All-Around Appraiser Q: Mona Lisa's Eye (Toho) Week 3
08 (08) Thermae Romae II (Toho) Week 8
09 (05) Pompeii (Gaga) Week 2
10 (07) Need for Speed (Disney) Week 2
11 (10) The Grand Budapest Hotel (Fox) Week 2

>Frozen has now spent 14-consecutive weeks atop the box-office, but experiences its second worst drop to day of 34%. It grossed ¥392,640,050 ($3.8 million) with 304,526 admissions over the weekend, bringing its 94-day total to ¥23.10 billion ($226.5 million) and 18.18 million admissions.

It is currently the:

>Third-Highest Grossing Film of All-Time (JPY).
>Third-Most Attended Film of All-Time.
>Second-Highest Grossing Film of All-Time (USD).
>Second-Leggiest Wide Release since 1998 (x30.26).
>Highest Grossing (USD) and Most-Attended Western Film of All-Time.

>Noah landed in Japan taking in ¥255,020,900 ($2.5 million) with 200,321 admissions on 361 screens over the weekend. After 3-day, it reached ¥334.9 million ($3.3 million). This is a very solid debut that should lead it close to ¥1.5 billion ($15 million) or slightly higher, though ¥2 billion ($20 million) is probably out of the question now.

>Climbing to Spring had a mediocre start of just ¥95,218,400 ($933,000) with 81,166 admissions on 337 screens. The opening is close to that of last June's Real, which was considered another live-action disappointment that month.

Notes:

>The Amazing Spider-Man 2 just might beat Gravity afterall, and it's only ¥100 million away from matching its own predecessors gross, too, despite opening 28% below it. I think it'll fall a bit short of it doing so, but its legs have been quite surprising (currently a x7.35 multiplier vs the x5.47 of the first film)

>Detective Conan 18 is the first in the series to exceed ¥4 billion.

Frozen is still on track to hit 20 million admissions, becoming just the 2nd film to ever do so, but not much more. 20 million admissions would mean ~15.8% of Japan's population saw the film in theaters (not accounting for any repeats of course), but it should be able to reach 16%.

Post Re: Japan Box Office: Best Multipliers
It's...

It's also about to achieve the best multiplier for a wide-release that I'm aware of since at least 1997/1998. I really wish Titanic's opening weekend was available. It's the only film since 1997/1998 that might have earned a multiplier over 30 as well.

But considering the how insanely high admissions were in the 50s/60s compared to today's admissions, I'm confident that a few films from that golden era of the box-office tops them all.

Best Multipliers (Wide-Releases) [1998-]

01. 30.37 - Spirited Away (July, 2001)
02. 30.26 - Frozen (Mar., 2014) [94 Days in Release]
03. 26.99 - Princess Mononoke (July, 1997)
04. 26.13 - Avatar (Dec., 2009)
05. 23.21 - Departures (Dec., 2008)
06. 19.96 - Les Miserabes (Dec., 2012)
07. 16.44 - The Cat Returns (July, 2002)
08. 16.05 - The Eternal Zero (Dec., 2013) [Estimate]
09. 15.69 - Monsters, Inc. (Mar., 2002)
10. 15.25 - The Last Samurai (Dec., 2003)
11. 14.98 - Ponyo (July, 2008)
12. 14.84 - Howl's Moving Castle (Nov., 2004)
13. 14.81 - Always: Sunset on Third Street (Nov., 2005)
14. 14.25 - Confessions (June, 2010)
15. 13.96 - Bayside Shakedown: Save the Rainbow Bridge! (July, 2003)
16. 13.83 - Thermae Romae (Apr., 2012)
17. 13.64 - Crying Out Love, in the Center of the World (May, 2004)
18. 13.09 - Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone (Dec., 2001)
19. 12.98 - Summer Wars (Aug., 2009)
20. 12.88 - Ted (Jan., 2013)
21. 12.51 - The Wind Rises (July, 2013)
22. 12.50 - The Phantom of the Opera (Jan., 2005)
23. 12.48 - Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl (Aug., 2003)
24. 12.24 - Finding Nemo (Dec., 2003)
25. 11.56 - The Wolf Children Ame and Yuki (July, 2012)

Frozen's multiplier should top 34, and may reach 35/36.

Hey there, long time lurker here I love reading all your posts!
I just wondered what kind of numbers we can expect for edge of tomorrow here? I know that nowadays Japan's box office is very female driven and Sci-fi might not appeal to them but it's already doing very well in China and South Korea and the original book it was based on is a Japanese light novel. Also Tom Cruise seems to be very popular there so what can we expect from it?

Doing well in China in no way means it will do well in Japan. China, for all intents and purposes, is like the USA. They go and see big blockbuster products. Japan has their own likes and dislikes, and one of those dislikes is big summer US blockbusters. They rarely do exceedingly well. Basically, for Edge of Tomorrow, look at Oblivion's Japanese gross and then add 20% and you're looking at a likely gross for it in Japan.

I'm aware of this and to be honest EoT is doing crap in the US but also has extremely positive reviews so I'm not entirely sure you can generalize as "one of those generic blockbusters that the Japanese audience will dismiss". The fact that it's an adaptation of a popular Japanese light novel can't be dismissed either in my opinion. The 20% over oblivion gross sounded really random too what is that based on?

Days of Future Past also has good reviews and in Japan it will make around $15m. Nothing too special.

Another thing is that Japanese really do not like Americans adapting or remaking their work. So the fact that it is a book adaptation will work against it. I expect around $16m for Edge of Tomorrow. If it makes more, then it's done very well.

Post Re: Japan Box Office: Weekend Ranking / Charts Updated
I think Edge of Tomorrow will comfortably outgross Oblivion. But I don't expect much more than ¥2 billion ($20 million) or so, though wouldn't be surprised with ¥2.5 billion ($25 million).

June is often a wasteland of movie dumps, so many July films benefit from this. And there's not really much for a strict adult audience next month, either. So it has Cruise (who along with Depp and Jolie, are probably the only Hollywood stars left with significant b.o. drawing ability), a strong release date, great reviews, and it's based on source material. The latter can backfire, but it's less risky than a solely original film. At the very least, it helps generate awareness that could lead to interest.

July 05-06 will be a fun weekend when Cruise (Edge of Tomorrow) and Jolie (Maleficent) take each other on while attempting to dethrone Frozen in the process.

>Frozen has really slowed down (compared to what it was doing in its first 13 weeks...), and it's going to be a real struggle to surpass Titanic's ¥26.2 billion total to become the #2 film all-time (#1 for a western film). I think it'll end up missing actually. Frozen already passed i Titanic in admissions and USD, however.

Spirited Away's #1 spot is looking more and more secure now.

Oh, and hurry up July.
