Post Re: Japan Box-Office: December Release Schedule
Some release dates for several big locals films were announced this past week:

Doraemon: Nobita's Little Space War - March 5th, 2021
Detective Conan: The Scarlet Bullet - April 16th, 2021 (rescheduled from last April)
Rurouni Kenshin: The Final - April 23rd, 2021 (rescheduled from last July)
Rurouni Kenshin: The Beginning - June 4th, 2021 (rescheduled from last August)
My Hero Academia Third Movie (Subtitle TBA) - Summer 2021
Masquerade Night - September 17th, 2021 (sequel to the 2019 blockbuster Masquerade Hotel)

And here are some Hollywood dates which may or may not be new, but they're obviously subject to being pulled completely:

Wonder Woman 1984 - December 18th, 2020 (moved up a week from December 25th, 2020)
Raya and the Last Dragon - March 12th, 2021 (rescheduled from last November)
Black Widow - April 29th, 2021 (pushed back a week from April 21st, 2021, after being rescheduled from last November, after being rescheduled from last May)
Cruella - May 28th, 2021 (I don't believe this one had a date until somewhat recently?)
Minions: Rise of Gru - Summer 2021 (rescheduled from last July)
The Eternals - October 29th, 2021 (rescheduled from last November)
West Side Story - December 10th, 2021 (rescheduled from this December)

Among the Hollywood films, Minions 2 probably stands the best shot of being released since Toho-Towa (subsidiary of Toho) has distribution rights to Universal films in the market. And it's not on the release schedule, yet, but I would expect Godzilla vs. King Kong to be released since Toho has the distribution rights to the Warner Bros. Godzilla films in the market.

Remember I said without Xmas-New Year it would have been a much closer race. I take that back. This would have cruised pass SA without those too.

Looks like 36Bn is back on menu.

Does the volume 23 will still count in 2020 (even when the totals are already done) or it will be for the 2021 total?
Sorry, idk anything about the manga industry

Counts for 2021. Oricon starts and stops counting around mid-November (2020 started at the 19th and ended at the 22nd of Nov for them), so everything after counts for the next year. The way things are going Kimetsu could still top 2021 manga sales

ohhhh
so with current records like this, will it be possible for KnY to maintain it's position in at least the top 5? I mean, top 10 is sure-ball, but idk about top 5 and above since a lot of series will also have some kind of boosts.
I'm thinking that next year will be much of an even fight in the rankings.

"Could top". Not could, It will. The real question is by how much. This week's sales alone will most likely be enough to get a top 5 place in next year's ranking.

I've been reading Japanese twitter and it is pretty insane. People who haver never bought manga before (Not even Kimetsu volumes) are buying this final volume. I saw someone who has only watched the movie (has not watched the orignal anime or read the manga) buy the final volume.

Here is also an interesting article about the cultural impact of Kimetsu.

I mean, love or hate KnY, everyone has to agree that this is insane. KnY is really comparable to a once in a lifetime phenomenon.

 Say what? All 3.95 million copies gone in 12 hours? I'm not surprised, well, I am that it sold out THAT fast, but do you have a source? Shueisha really should have included the second-print next week into this week's print-run.

And yes, this week ALONE will exceed 5 million copies for 2021, if the above is true (and it "only" needed to do near 3 million, really). That'll be enough to make the Top 10 for 2021. And there's still a lot that'll be going on with the series, too, such as season two of the anime and/or the next movie, spin-off manga/novels, entrance in the video game industry, and who knows what else. It'll clearly be #1 for 2021, as it'll probably exceed 10 million in just December.

This Friday might look higher than what the usual locations suggests, but the last two Fridays have come in a lot higher than estimated, so I'm going with a higher estimate with this Friday's estimate.

@Corpse, are you keeping a prediction for the weekend around $7.3M, or have you downgraded your prediction because of pre-sales or something ?

And besides, do you have the pre-sales figures for the weekend ? Are they good ?

No, I'll keep my early projection the same for now. I'll probably adjust it a bit once pre-sale data comes in later today, but I don't see any reason to change it right now. Checking some key locations, sales look good. Obviously way down versus last Saturday, of course.

But remember that since the film is on a see-saw, this weekend is a down weekend. Saturday will probably be down 40% or so versus last Saturday, while Sunday will likely be down around 20% or so, giving us a weekend drop around 30%. I remember the Saturday from two weeks ago, also one of the down weekends due to the see-saw effect, coming in around 45% below that prior Saturday and people were freaking out unnecessarily. That weekend ended up dropping near 30% (32%) as expected in the end.

Every other Saturday IS going to be down ~40% or something until January since every other other Saturday is going to see increases.

Also, in regard to presales: A new Fate film is opening today, so when pre-sales come out later today, it's very likely it'll have higher pre-sales going into Saturday. The Fate series has a big and loyal fanbase, but the films are also very frontloaded and their pre-sales represent a high percentage of daily ticket sales. No, it's not going to dethrone Demon Slayer.

Haven't heard anything about the 3.95M being out of stock at all.

Wouldn't be surprised if it drops a bit more than 30% this weekend but who knows, the weekdays were pretty damn solid after all.

19 hours left till the special fan screening in my country. There are only 6 shows total in the country.

Presale:

581/ 1077 (~54%)

The ticket price for these special fan screening is much (much more) expensive than normal ticket price in the market. There are many other people are waiting for normal ticket price in 3 weeks later.

And there are some new coronavirus cases which just appeared on this week after a long time no new case. So it can somehow make people afraid too.

So Demon Slayer should surpass ¥29Bn by Monday or Tuesday and then surpass 22 millions admissions by next Saturday and finally ¥30Bn by next Monday or next Tuesday ! Nice !

Quite a good hold in terms of pre-sales versus last Saturday. And it's even above Fate in pre-sales, too, which is surprising. Yes, they're down 62% (because last Saturday was up over 75% due to the giveaway), but more importantly, it's an improvement on the first post-giveaway Saturday (11/21) which was down 68% in pre-sales as it gradually improved to a 52% drop for the day and 32% for the weekend. (All percentages are from the usual locations.) A 40% hold today is pretty likely I'd say, which would be very good, and set-up a 30% drop or better over the weekend.

First time it's not going to break a weekend record, due to Frozen's crazy Golden Week 8th week/weekend. But remember the see-saw effect moving forward. This is a down weekend, and next weekend will be an up weekend. Just because it isn't going to break the 8th weekend record, definitely doesn't mean it won't break any future weekend records. The 9th weekend record, if it comes in around the prediction above, is pretty likely to fall for example as it'll likely stay pretty flat/possibly increase next weekend. And its 11th-13th weekends occur over the holiday period, so look for those to be pretty significant, too.

And the fact that its total is still about equal to the combined 8 week totals of almost any two films is ridiculous. And it's still tracking almost ¥10 billion ahead of Spirited Away.

Yeah, I checked because I copied the figures when released to make a comparison between WwY and Your Name.

@Corpse, can you detail the percentages of fall or increase each week that we could see from the fourth week of December until the end of the holidays to realize what effect the holidays will have on the box Demon Slayer office ?
