[Rankings by Admissions]

Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods achieves the first sweep since Doraemon opened.

And it looks like Kid's Police should be above 7 Days of Himawari, but the Kids aren't playing at Warner Mycal and other cinema chains so I know it's not above 10th place.

Opening higher than estimates, Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods grossed an incredible ¥683,924,950 ($7.32 million) with 561,098 admissions over the weekend on 312 screens. It was the first Japanese film to ever open in IMAX, on which it earned $450,000 on 16 screens. This is the second biggest opening of the year, and the third biggest in the past 6 months. And even if it ends up being really frontloaded, it won't do less than $30 million and might pull off a $40 million total.

Wreck-It Ralph managed an increase of 4% in it's second weekend already showcasing it's strong WOM, while Doraemon 34 saw a nice 6% increase over last weekend. Ralph has already exceeded ¥1 billion ($12 million) and 1 million admissions after 10 days in release, and Doraemon 34 continued to add to it's franchise record run and broke 2.5 million admissions after just 23 days.

Platinum Data was thought to fall apart after mixed reviews, critics and audiences alike, but has done well for itself having exceeded ¥1.5 billion ($17 million) after 16 days.

Oz: The Great and Powerful got off to a slow start, but has been having solid legs and reached 1 million admissions this weekend.

Well, well. Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods just had the best opening weekend for an animated feature ever during the Spring season! All the others opened in the Winter or Summer.

Also of note among all local films, Howl's Moving Castle still holds the domestic opening weekend record in Yen, while One Piece Film Z holds the domestic opening weekend record in Admissions (and USD). And both films are the only local films to ever exceed 1 million admissions opening weekend.

Let's wait and see if Miyazaki's The Wind Rises can also accomplish the incredible feat again this July.

¥1 billion

One Piece Film Z's final total estimate was released with the Dragon Ball Z reports this weekend. It saw a 0.5% increase over it's last tracking total.

Doraemon overakes Skyfall and becomes the #4 film of the year with nearly ¥3 billion after just four weeks. It is still outpacing last year's film, and if it continues this pace, should do between ¥3.8-¥4.1 billion ($41-45 million) and 3.5 million admissions. The ¥4 billion milestone will depend on how badly Toho wants it.

Platinum Data has another good week and may exceed ¥2 billion next week. It's aiming for 2 million admissions and a ¥2.5 billion ($30 million) total.

Wreck-It Ralph debuts on the list with an impressive 10-day total and will easily surpass Oz very soon (already has in admissions). I think it's going to reach ¥3 billion ($35 million). Oz isn't doing too bad, however. It had a mediocre opening weekend, but has been having respectable holds and should reach $20 million.

Ted and Les Mis have begun to really slow down and won't be adding much to their current totals (I expect tracking to end this week for both), but what crazy performances by the two of them! Hollywood's Summer and Fall films will find it extremely difficult to match their success. They'll need breakouts for Monsters University (pre-sales are strong), and a couple of the live-action films... maybe Pacific Rim (still no release date, though) or The Lone Ranger, which is getting an early Monday release (Aug. 5) for Obon Week this year.

*Top 10 Films Only

BIG weekend thanks to Dragon Ball Z and increases from holdovers Wreck-It Ralph and Doraemon 34, this is the first weekend of the year to break ¥2 billion and puts 2013 well ahead of 2012 after three full months.

Weekends only account for 45-50% of the yearly box-office in Japan, so I'm estimating the 2013 year to be around ¥43/44 billion ($460-480 million) after three months when including earnings from Dec. holdovers.

The biggest weekend of all-time belongs to April 17-18, 2010's huge ¥3,161,803,053. I don't think any weekend this year will challenge that unless it occurs on July 20-21 when Miyazaki's The Wind Rises opens with Monsters University and Pokemon 16 as the top holdovers in their second and third weeks.

The announcement of Finding Dory got over 1,000 retweets on cinematoday.jp yesterday.

http://www.cinematoday.jp/page/N0051745

I've seen a few movie articles get more than that before, but over 1,000 retweets is usually reserved for deaths of famous actors or directors (Richard Griffith's got 1,900).

Finding Nemo remains Walt Disney Pictures and Pixar's most-attended film in Japan, and second highest-grossing.

1. Alice in Wonderland - ¥11.8 billion ($142 million), 7.4 million admissions.
2. Finding Nemo - ¥11.0 billion ($102 million), 8.6 million admissions.
3. Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End - ¥10.9 billion ($102 million) 8.2 million admissions.
4. Toy Story 3 - ¥10.8 billion ($130 million), 7.3 million admissions.
5. Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest - ¥10.02 billion ($84 million), 7.75 million admissions
6. Monsters Inc - ¥9.37 billion ($76 million), 7.6 million admissions.
7. Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides - ¥8.87 billion ($114 million), 5.85 million admissions.
8. The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe - ¥6.86 billion ($59 million), 5.65 million admissions.
9. Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl - ¥6.80 billion ($61 million), 5.5 million admissions
10. The Incredibles - ¥5.26 billion ($51 million), 4.3 million admissions.

Post Re: Japan Box Office: 2013 Top Grossing Films Updated
I've been posting for months about Warner Bros. exiting Japan as an exhibitor since December and Aeon Group having purchased their 50% share in the Warner Mycal Cinema chain (founded in 1993 as a joint venture by Warner and Aeon), and the buyout was finalized last week.

Aeon formally announced yesterday that with owning Warner Mycal Cinemas now (the second largest chain in the country), they operate 609 screens or 20% of the nation's 3,290 movie screens with the merger of their own chain and overtake Toho as the nation's largest cinema complex.

The new chain will be called "Aeon Cinemas" with Warner Mycal and Aeon's current chain adopting the name over the next three years.

http://www.nikkei.com/article/DGXNASDD0 ... 0C1TJ2000/

Top 5 Exhibitors:
Aeon (609 screens)
Toho (567 screens)
Movix (226 screens)
United (202 screens)
Sunshine (165 screens)

I doubt this puts a dent in Toho's near monopoly over the market (recently bought out Virgin Cinemas), but it's very impressive for Aeon Group.

What will be most interesting will be how this effects Warner Bros. releases in the country from here. Naturally, Warner Bros. distributed films thrived at Warner Mycal Cinemas just like how Toho distributed films thrive at Toho Cinemas.

Warner Bros. distributed films have been bombing in the worst way possible for over a year now as it is, and now they're losing their "homefield". The Hobbit (which saw a deathly 85% drop from Return of the King), Cloud Atlas, and Jack the Giant Slayer are just three examples in the past 5 months. Pacific Rim, which I think has great potential, still doesn't have a release date! I've been expecting to see it announced for the July 27-28 Weekend (wide open), but nothing. :pinch: All their top grossing films lately have been local releases, and they have several planned for this year.

Post Re: Japan Box Office: Aeon buyout of Warner Mycal complete.
Saturday Estimates (4/06)

1 Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods (Toei) ¥177 million ($1.9 million), -52%, Week 2
2 Wreck-It Ralph (Disney) ¥147 million ($1.6 million), -16%, Week 3
3 Doraemon: Nobita's Secret Gadget Museum (Toho) ¥102 million ($1.1 million), -33%, Week 5
4 Platinum Data (Toho) ¥65 million ($690,000), -36%, Week 4
5 Aibou Series: X-Day (Toei) ¥50 million ($530,000), -39%, Week 3
6 Oz: The Great and Powerful (Disney) ¥36 million ($380,000), -21%, Week 5
7 Pretty Cure All Stars: New Stage 2 (Toei) ¥35 million ($370,000), -31%, Week 4
8 Jack the Giant Slayer (Warner Bros.) ¥26 million ($275,000), -29%, Week 3
9 7 Days of Himawari & Her Puppies (Shochiku) ¥13 million ($135,000), -33%, Week 4
10 Nobody's Perfect 3 (Toho) ¥11 million ($115,000), -16%, Week 3

Only one wide (barely) opener this weekend, Orpheus' Lyre, and estimates have it doing just under ¥10 million ($100,000) and probably missing the Top 10. The only change in the Top 10 is Oz over Pretty Cure, but they're so close they may end up in the same positions as last week tomorrow

Not bad for Dragon Ball Z. It exceeded 1 million admissions and ¥1.2 billion ($14 million) this past Thursday, it's sixth day in release.

Excellent drop for Ralph following Spring Break week. It should be close to or over ¥2 billion ($20-22 million) after this weekend. Next week will be most telling on whether it drops significantly like most kid/family films do after break or if it's going to turn into a mini-Monsters Inc from 11 years ago which was also released in March.

Weekend Estimates (4/6-7)

1 (1) Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods (Toei) ¥361 million ($3.8 million), -47%, Week 2
2 (2) Wreck-It Ralph (Disney) ¥282 million ($3.0 million), -20%, Week 3
3 (3) Doraemon: Nobita's Secret Gadget Museum (Toho) ¥185 million ($2.0 million), -39%, Week 5
4 (4) Platinum Data (Toho) ¥130 million ($1.4 million), -36%, Week 4
5 (5) Aibou Series: X-Day (Toei) ¥106 million ($1.1 million), -33%, Week 3
6 (6) Pretty Cure All Stars: New Stage 2 (Toei) ¥66 million ($690,000), -36%, Week 4
7 (7) Oz: The Great and Powerful (Disney) ¥64 million ($670,000), -31%, Week 5
8 (8) Jack the Giant Slayer (Warner Bros.) ¥49 million ($515,000), -33%, Week 3
9 (9) 7 Days of Himawari & Her Puppies (Shochiku) ¥19 million ($205,000), -42%, Week 4
10 (-) Orpheus' Lyre (Showgate) ¥17 million ($180,000), 0, DEBUT! [109 theaters]

Orpheus' Lyre narrowly beat Nobody's Perfect 3 to earn a Top 10 debut.
Dragon Ball Z pulling off the sub-50% drop is impressive and it's well on it's way to becoming the highest-grossing film in the franchise.
Ralph has the best hold in the Top 10 and is a strong indication it's not going to fall apart now that Spring Break is over.

The last update was ¥5.68 billion ($63.6 million) on April 4th (Screendaily later reported $63.9 million on April 7th).

The film was still playing at 89 locations last week, though, so that's not going to be the final total. I suspect it'll finish around ¥5.8/5.9 billion ($65/66 million) since it's likely to be in release until Summer. It has achieved many records during it's run.

Weekend Ranking (4/6-7)

1 (1) Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods (Toei) Week 2
2 (2) Wreck-It Ralph (Disney) Week 3
3 (3) Doraemon: Nobita's Secret Gadget Museum (Toho) Week 5
4 (4) Platinum Data (Toho) Week 4
5 (5) Aibou Series: X-Day (Toei) Week 3
6 (6) Pretty Cure All Stars: New Stage 2 (Toei) Week 4
7 (7) Oz: The Great and Powerful (Disney) Week 5
8 (8) Jack the Giant Slayer (Warner Bros.) Week 3
9 (9) 7 Days of Himawari & Her Puppies (Shochiku) Week 4
10 (11) My Friendship Diary (Showgate) Week 3

Not many figures were released with the weekend ranking, though oddly enough actuals for two films in the Top 10 and two films outside the Top 10 were:

>Doraemon 34 - ¥3,589,220,000 ($39 million) and 3.3 million admissions after 30 days in release.
>Platinum Data - ¥2,072,210,000 ($23 million) and 1.7 million admissions after 23 days in release.

Doraemon 34 is a mere ¥31 million away from passing last year's film and becoming the highest-grossing film in the franchise. It will probably achieve this on Wednesday, only it's 33rd day in release.

And tracking is still ongoing for two of this year's biggest performers:
>Les Miserables - ¥5,753,387,350 ($64 million) and 4,704,035 admissions after 107 days in release.
>Ted - ¥4,193,696,300 ($46 million) and 3,087,254 admissions after 79 days in release.

I also want to note that the Yen is about to break 100 (99.5) for the first time in nearly 5 years after Shinzo Abe's strong push to weaken the Yen since being elected in December, and mostly because of the Bank of Japan's record stimulus plan ($1.4 trillion by 2014) announcement yesterday to help end it's recession and get inflation up to 2%. This is the first major plan by Shinzo Abe to restart Japan's economy through massive fiscal and monetary stimulus.

This will make USD totals for films starting this week appear really bad compared to the last 4/5 years since the Yen was trading below 90 in 2010, and hit lows below 80 during all of 2011 and 2012, but Yen totals and admissions have been thriving and are way up over the past few years so far in 2013.

Recent Films Exceeding 4.5 million Admissions (Since 2008)

12.87 million :: Ponyo (2008)

6.30 million :: Boys Over Flowers: The Final (2008)
5.85 million :: Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides (2011)

4.66 million :: Pokemon D&P: Giratina and the Sky Warrior (2008)
4.65 million :: Bayside Shakedown: The Final (2012)

Les Mis actually increased 16% this past weekend (it's 16th), bringing in 12,675 admissions for ¥19,736,950 ($200,000), so it still has some life left in it to maybe reach 4.8 million. I'm curious if that gross is actually enough for 10th place this weekend since the rankings (previous post) are done by admissions.

And to think it only opened with 229,295 admissions back in December, too. It's multiplied that by 20.5x without ever going any wider. Only three films in the past 12 years have showcased stronger legs.

¥1 billion

Doraemon: Nobita's Secret Gadget Museum (Movie 34) continued to soar up the list with the help of Spring Break and is very close to becoming the highest-grossing film in the franchise after 30 days. ¥4 billion+ ($43+ million) and is very likely, so let's see if it can catch up to Ted now in gross.

Wreck-It Ralph has already broken ¥2 billion after 17 days and will be aiming for ¥3-3.5 billion ($32-37 million). I think legs have potential to be even greater, though, with it having already achieved the avg. final multiplier for a film (6x) after just three weeks.

Platinum Data also broke ¥2 billion this weekend and is on track for ¥2.5 billion ($27/28 million) or a little more.

Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods (Movie 14) debuts high on the list after just 9 days in release. It's still early to project where it'll end up, post-Spring Break can be hard on some films, but becoming the highest-grossing film in the franchise with ¥3 billion ($32 million) is looking good. Not-bad for Goku taking a 17-year hiatus from theaters!

So many records have been broken in the past 5 months (One Piece, Skyfall, Les Mis, Ted, Doraemon, and Dragon Ball Z have all broken records).

*Top 10 Films Only

So far this year, 2013 has beaten 2012 every weekend except for two (#9 and #11)

I can't see 2012 catching up to 2013 for the year either. Maybe 2013 will lose some of it's lead in May/June since it won't have a hit like Thermae Romae from last year, but July and August will be much stronger with: The Wind Rises, Monsters University, Pokemon, Pacific Rim (maybe, still no release date), The Lone Ranger, Gatchaman, World War Z and Galileo: Midsummer Formula. Very packed Summer, and pretty similar to 2010's record Summer schedule.

The estimated theater count is 155. The majority of those have to be at Toho because it has many showtimes at their locations this weekend.

Wide-Release Theater Counts (4/13)
We Knit Ship - 238
Chinese Zodiac - 155
Hana Kappa: The Movie - 146

Post Re: Japan Box Office: Gatchaman Teaser
The teaser trailer for the live-action Gatchaman film was released yesterday (more details below the teaser). The film is expected to be one of the most expensive local-production ever released.

Image

[TEASER TRAILER]

The film is directed by Sata Toya (Kaiju, Gokusen, Sexy Voice), written by Watanabe Yusuke (20th Century Boys, Gantz, Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods), with special effects by Yamazaki Takashi (Space Battleship Yamato, Always: Sunset on Third Street, Ballad).

The main five cast members includes: Tori Matsuzaka, Go Ayano, Ayame Goriki, Tatsuomi Hamada, and Ryohei Suzuki.

Plot: The five serve as agents of the International Science Organization in Tokyo in the near future. Galactor, a mysterious group whose technology far surpasses that of humans, has declared war on the entire world and has already subjugated half of it. A mysterious crystal-like object called a "stone," is humanity's only hope. Those who are able to draw out the power of the "stones" are forced to train to become special agents in a five-person team called "Gatchaman."

The film will have more visual effects shots than any other local-production, surpassing the 1,300 in 2009's live-action Yatterman film. The 5 form-fitting suits (pictured above) designed for the "Gatchaman" cost ¥20 million (over $200,000) alone. The budget for Gatchaman is currently unknown, but is expected to be just as much or higher than other big budget productions including: The 2 Gantz films, Yatterman, Space Battleship Yamato, Kaibutsu-Kun: The Movie, and Studio Ghibli's films all with budgets in the ¥2-2.8 billion ($20-30 million) range.

To my knowledge, the most-expensive local-production is Hayao Miyazaki's Ponyo at ¥3.4 billion (about $32 million). Miyazaki wanted to make the film fully hand-drawn, resulting in the detailed drawing of over 170,000 different images (a record) by himself and 70 staff members.

Gatchaman opens August 24th via Toho.

Saturday Estimates (4/13)

ImageImageImage

1 Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods (Toei) ¥112 million ($1.15 million), -48%, Week 3
2 Wreck-It Ralph (Disney) ¥75 million ($770,000), -46%, Week 4
3 Platinum Data (Toho) ¥47 million ($480,000), -30%, Week 5
4 We Knit Ship (Shochiku/Asmik Ace) ¥46 million ($470,000), 0, DEBUT! [238 theaters]
5 Doraemon: Nobita's Secret Gadget Museum (Toho) ¥40 million ($410,000), -57%, Week 6
6 Aibou Series: X-Day (Toei) ¥38 million ($390,000), -28%, Week 4
7 Chinese Zodiac (Kadokawa Pictures) ¥33 million ($340,000), 0, DEBUT! [155 theaters]
8 Hana Kappa: The Movie (Toho Video Division) ¥30 million ($310,000), 0, DEBUT! [146 theaters]

9 Oz: The Great and Powerful (Disney) ¥17 million ($175,000), -46%, Week 6
10 Pretty Cure All Stars: New Stage 2 (Toei) ¥16 million ($165,000), -52%, Week 5

Some rough drops now that Spring Break is over, especially for films that skew toward children or families.

Nice number for We Knit Ship with a good chance at the Top 3. Aoi Miyazaki proves to be the most reliable young female draw in the country yet again here. Had anyone else been in the film, I doubt it would have debuted above 7th/8th this weekend.

Wreck-It Ralph wasn't able to avoid the drop-off nearly all children/family films get this time of year, though avoiding a 50%, probably sub-45% for the weekend, is pretty good.

Overall, a typical slow weekend after the break with several notable releases coming up soon in time for Golden Week.

Weekend Estimates (4/13-14)

1 (1) Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods (Toei) ¥255 million ($2.6 million), -40%, Week 3
2 (2) Wreck-It Ralph (Disney) ¥189 million ($2.0 million), -32%, Week 4
3 (-) We Knit Ship (Shochiku/Asmik Ace) ¥113 million ($1.2 million), 0, DEBUT! [238 theaters]
4 (4) Platinum Data (Toho) ¥112 million ($1.2 million), -17%, Week 5
5 (3) Doraemon: Nobita's Secret Gadget Museum (Toho) ¥97 million ($1.0 million), -49%, Week 6
6 (5) Aibou Series: X-Day (Toei) ¥84 million ($860,000), -22%, Week 4
7 (-) Chinese Zodiac (Kadokawa Pictures) ¥82 million ($840,000), 0, DEBUT! [155 theaters]
8 (7) Oz: The Great and Powerful (Disney) ¥41 million ($420,000), -35%, Week 6
9 (6) Pretty Cure All Stars: New Stage 2 (Toei) ¥34 million ($350,000), -49%, Week 5
10 (-) Hana Kappa: The Movie (Toho Video Division) ¥30 million ($310,000), 0, DEBUT! [146 theaters]

Great Sunday recovery across the board.

Dragon Ball Z secured itself an impressive third-consecutive week in first place. Detective Conan will easily take it away next weekend, however. There's been an animated feature on top of the past 11/17 weekends.

Wreck-It Ralph impresses again mostly unfazed by school being back in session. Unlike in most other markets, kid/family films struggle even on weekends outside of Summer and Holidays. The competitive education system leaves little time for going to the movies when school's in session.

We Knit Ship is a great success for Shochiku and Asmik Ace. It might fall to fourth when actuals come out, but as long as it stays above ¥100 million it'll be Shochiku's second only live-action film to open above the mark in the past 9-months. Legs for these films are generally really strong, so perhaps it has an outside shot at ¥1 billion ($11 million).

Chinese Zodiac also did well for itself. I'm going to go ahead and predict it'll come in higher than estimates tomorrow and above Aibou Series due to an above avg. ticket price. The opening should be enough to reach ¥500 million ($6 million).

Those are some incredible holds for Platinum Data and Aibou Series. Along with Chinese Zodiac, they're the oldest skewing in the Top 10 right now, which is the main reason for the holds post-Spring Break, but they're still really, really good.

I forgot to half Hana Kappa's Saturday estimate yesterday so that's why it's unchanged.

Hmm, I thought cartoons struggles outside of holidays/summer was exclusive only to HK. I mean, Croods fell over 80% this weekend after Easter/Ching Ming holidays. Blech.

What impressed me about Wreck-It Ralph's run in HK is the drop after the Christmas holidays. It fell in the 50's where normally children's films drop about 70% (good films drop about 65%) so that shows me that this is also playing to couples. Of course, extraordinary word of mouth was a huge factor as well...seems like it is repeating itself in Japan.
