>Coco tops the box-office over the weekend for a third-consecutive week, and managed the only increase over the lucrative discount weekend. As a result of the discount weekend, the film sold 328,000 admissions to earn an impressive 16% increase in its third weekend. Overall, Pixar's latest is doing very well, and is outpacing many of the studio's other releases like Up, Wall-E, Inside Out, and Ratatouille, as it aims for a total around ¥4.5-5.0 billion ($40-45 million).

>The Boss Baby remained in second place, barely dropping in its second weekend. In terms of admissions, the soon-to-be highest-grossing DreamWorks Animation release sold 318,000 admissions in its sophomore frame, up 11% over its opening weekend. After just 12 days in release, the film is already the sixth highest-grossing DreamWorks Animation release and will surpass Shrek 2 to claim the #1 spot in the next week or two. Expect a total a bit above ¥3 billion ($30 million).

>Doraemon: Nobita's Treasure Island holds strong in in third place in its fifth weekend of release, selling 289,000 admissions to increase 6% over last weekend. The thirty-eighth entry in the series achieved the biggest fifth weekend in the series (after claiming the record for all previous weekends), and is now just a few hundred million away from becoming the highest-grossing film in long-running franchise and should finish around ¥5.5 billion ($50 million+).

>The Greatest Showman, as usual, holds well once again and is now outpacing last year's La La Land. It's going to surpass The Phantom of the Opera in the coming days to become the fourth highest-grossing live-action musical in the market, and will surpass La La Land to become the third in a couple weeks. It'll end up exceeding ¥4.5 billion ($42/43 million) before its excellent performance comes to a close.

>The Post wasn't able to debut in the Top 5, having to settle for sixth place, selling a mediocre 109,840 admissions across 281 screens. This one should have been a fairly safe ¥1 billion ($10 million) earner, but it's highly unlikely to reach that milestone with this debut.

>Red Sparrow hasn't had its weekend figure released yet, but its 3-day total was and it's almost identical to estimates (with 82,737 admissions on 337 screens), so the weekend frame estimate above should be very close. I normally wouldn't come back later to update it since it's below ¥100 million, but if anyone reading is interested in this one, just let me know.

I don't think its going to hold as well going forward but I never thought TBB will end within $10m-$15m total of Coco in Japan.

It will depend on how well they hold this weekend but perhaps even more importantly next weekend. Unfortunately it seems like both the annual Crayon Shin-chan movie and the annual Detective Conan movie are being released on a Friday this year, for some reason, as opposed to the usual Saturday, so Doraemon, Coco and TBB will all be losing a share of their screens and seats a day earlier.

Yes, everything needs to make as much as it can before April 13th. The newest Detective Conan has potential to deliver the biggest opening weekend in several years, so it's going to command the bigger screens. And a couple weeks later, Golden Week begins and with it comes many openers that'll largely reduce the March holdovers to barely wide/limited releases in terms of screens and showtimes.

Interesting and good to know which means there is a chance that these movies end up even closer because TBB seems to be gaining on the difference with Coco.

Any idea why they're being released on a Friday ? I don't remember a Japanese movie ever being released that day (previews excluded) and here we have two in one weekend.

Get ready to see a lot more! I'm not sure if it's going to become the norm, but starting this month and through to the end of the year, there are many Japanese films scheduled for release on Friday instead of the traditional Saturday. There's actually so many that I feel like I've missed the memo about some schedule change announcement. It'll be interesting to track and see how they perform.

Also, Friday, or earlier, openings for Japanese releases aren't too uncommon. If there's a holiday prior to the weekend, you'll sometimes see local films get released on that day to take advantage of the increased business. And Friday, or earlier, releases also happens sometimes during extended holiday periods such as Golden Week or Obon Festival for the same reason. However, it's very rare for Japanese films to be released before the weekend during regular weeks.

That is indeed surprising to hear. Maybe Japan is eventually looking at Fri-Sun weekend like most of the world.

We'll see. I honestly haven't had much time to read actual movie-related news over the past few months, so I could have missed something important. I'll do some research into it in the near future.

And Thursday just about does it for the Spring Break boost this year for the box-office. I'll post Friday's estimates tomorrow as planned, even though the day will likely be really weak (morning ticket sales are very low), and everything will go back to normal next week.

RIP. I have seen Grave of the Fireflies and Pom Poko. I saw Takahata as a storyteller with something of substance to tell. He did not shy away from tackling serious and timely subject matter (such as conservation of environment). His animated films confronted reality and did not gloss over sadness.

No. Studio Ghibli itself hasn't released a film since 2014 after disbanding their film production department (although they did co-produce 2016's The Red Turtle).

However...Hayao Miyazaki is planning to release his "final" film in 2020 ahead of the Tokyo Olympic Games titled How Do You Live? with Studio Ghibli "re-opening" by issuing former staff short-term contracts to work on the film. The film is based on a Japanese novel, and is said to be in development with Miyazaki's grandson in mind after he (Miyazaki) passes away.

Post Re: Japan Box Office: Studio Ghibli's Isao Takahata Has Died
Spring Break is definitely done boosting the box-office now after those Fri.-to-Fri. drops to deliver that mediocre Friday.

Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle failing to open at #1 for the day is pretty disappointing, although not exactly surprising either.

Western comedies are typically difficult to market and rarely find an audience in Japan; the vast majority just bomb outright if they're given a wide release. And even heavily marketing the film as an action-adventure film versus a comedy wouldn't have done much considering The Rock, while probably being recognizable from WWE and the Fast and Furious franchise, isn't a draw in the market, nor are any of the other cast members. It also doesn't help that Sony is the distributor -- they've really struggled in recent years.

It'll probably improve a decent amount over the weekend frame, but it could wind up debuting in third or as low as fourth place. I'll post the Weekend Forecast in a couple hours.

A bit of a tricky weekend to predict for a couple reasons. The first: This is the first post-Spring Break weekend, and while the holiday period doesn't effect the weekend business as much as the weekday business, it still provides some change. The second: This is a post-Discount weekend, meaning that admissions last Sunday were greatly inflated, while avg. ticket prices were greatly deflated.

So... Weekend admissions will be noticeably down versus last weekend (especially Sun.-to-Sun.), but the drops in gross won't appear as bad as the decline in admissions may indicate.

Having said this, Disney/Pixar's Coco appears, at the moment, that it'll survive the post-SB quite well based on early ticket sales and claim the #1 spot for a fourth-consecutive weekend, and will hopefully hold up better than last year's Moana which experienced rather poor legs after the holiday period. The Boss Baby, on the other hand, should still do decently, but morning ticket sales suggests that Spring Break was supporting it more over the past couple weeks. And Doraemon always begins to drop hard in April given how young it skews.

>Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle has the slight advantage on Saturday in terms of advance ticket sales, but generally if an opener isn't comfortably ahead of a holdover in pre-sales, it's not usually able to keep pace with it as the day/weekend progresses. The film will have a significantly higher average ticket price over its animated holdover competition, but I don't see it keeping the admissions close enough to debut at #1 (I wouldn't rule out 2nd place yet though).

>The Bastard and the Beautiful World is a difficult film to predict. It's a limited release, playing on 86 screens, and is a unique omnibus-style film. It performed solid yesterday, and its pre-sales this morning are also solid, but this one could very well be heavily frontloaded.

>And finally, the tenth position this weekend is open to a variety of films. Call Boy carries a R18+ rating, so its average ticket price will be high, therefore I'm giving it the advantage over the other contenders.
