Post Re: Japan Box Office: Detective Conan Set For Monster Debut

Post Re: Japan Box Office: Detective Conan Delivers Massive Debut
And with that, Detective Conan: Crimson Love Letter delivers the biggest opening weekend since 2014, and depending on the actual, will achieve the first opening weekend since 2014 with over 1 million admissions and either the second or third biggest debut ever for a domestic film.

Estimates soon.

>Detective Conan: Crimson Love Letter, the 21st entry in the long-running franchise, just delivered the biggest opening weekend of the past 3 years, once again setting a new franchise record AND a new April opening weekend record in the process. Also, its estimated weekend admissions should end up comfortably above 1 million, probably between 1,050,000-1,100,000 (possibly slightly higher), making it the first film since the first Yo-Kai Watch film in 2014 to exceed 1 million admissions in its debut weekend.

Based on Estimates, here are some achievements:
>Biggest-Opening Weekend for a Detective Conan film.
>Biggest-Opening Weekend for the Month of April.
>Third Biggest-Opening Weekend Ever for a Domestic Film.
>Third Biggest-Opening Weekend Ever for a Animated Film.
>Fourth Animated Film to Ever Exceed 1 Million Admissions in its Debut Weekend.
>Nineteenth Film to Ever Exceed 1 Million Admissions in its Debut Weekend.
>Eleventh Animated Film to Ever Exceed ¥1 Billion in its Debut Weekend.
>Thirty-fifth Film to Ever Exceed ¥1 Billion in its Debut Weekend.

It's a pretty great week-to-week hold, though, and likely locks up a ¥25 billion+ total even if it'll take about another month, especially with Golden Week coming up in 10 days.

Full Weekend Actuals are taking a long time to come in this week for some reason, so I'm going to wait one more day before posting them because I hate posting Weekend Results with partial actuals.

As for Detective Conan: Crimson Love Letter, it did deliver the biggest opening weekend (in revenue and admissions) in 3 years, though its actual came in a bit below estimates and fell just shy (12,432 tickets) of 1 million admissions. I'm going to update the two above charts with the actual.

Beauty and the Beast need a homerun from Japanese market for claiming 'highest grossing musical film at worldwide box office' from Frozen. It's gonna end at 1.1 billion without this market. But there are so many obstacles...

BatB did $22.5m OS and $13.7m domestic. I think it can do $1.15m from the holdovers so it needs another $130m-$150m from Japan. Given that Disney has been doing really well in Japan I think it can do half of what Frozen did there.

BATB is having all the materials to be a sureshot blockbuster in Japan, anything less than $80 M will be really disappointing, let's see ;) and what are the highest OW records for Non-Animated films?

Full Weekend Actuals are still unavailable, annoyingly. I'm going to wait just a bit longer before posting any updates, but I'll definitely have the 2017 Openings/Totals charts updated tonight or early tomorrow.

Regarding Beauty and the Beast, it'll definitely be a hit/blockbuster. I believe it has potential to become a ¥10 billion ($90 million+) contender, and likely the biggest film of 2017 unless something really, really breaks out. But the talks of $150 million, which would be upwards of ¥16-17 billion... incredibly unlikely.

I'm waiting to post that list in the event that Beauty and the Beast manages to make a noticeable impact on it this weekend, like Detective Conan: Crimson Love Letter did this past week.

Of course, it's a bit unfair to compare modern opening weekends to those prior to 2007. I'm thinking of creating a new Highest Opening Weekend Chart for the more modern box office (~2007-), because some of the opening weekends prior to 2007 just can't be matched these days because previews practically don't exist now, and aren't included in opening weekends anymore either.

In the early/mid-2000s, pretty much every blockbuster had plentiful previews included in their opening weekends, and previews have become a thing of the past in Japan.

Still missing weekend grosses (the totals have been out for awhile) for a few films, so I'm going to skip the Weekend Results and move on to the Chart Updates since they've been delayed all week.

>Japan will also become the #1 Overseas Market for La La Land in a couple weeks, besting the UK.

>Doraemon: Great Adventure in the Antarctic, the 37th entry in the series, became the highest-grossing film in the long-running franchise, outgrossing last year's film, after seven weeks in release.

>Your Name. has now earned ¥24,894,323,800 ($235.5 million) with 19,178,810 admissions after 34 weeks in release.
