>Moana finally reaches the land of the rising sun, saving its most luxurious international territory for last thanks to an impressive opening weekend. Its estimated opening weekend is ~46% ahead of Zootopia; ~8% ahead of Big Hero 6; and ~15% behind Frozen. If you're only trailing Frozen, you're in good company.

There was little doubt that the Polynesian animated adventure was going to be a hit in Japan, and it's likely setting course for a total north of ¥6 billion ($50 million+), with potential for much, much more; perhaps even as much as ¥7/8 billion ($60-70 million), and if it's a WOM success like its studio predecessors, who knows how far it'll go.

Japan is a lock to become Moana's top international market by a considerable margin, and should propel the film above the $400 million mark at the foreign box office and $650 million at the worldwide box office.

>Doraemon, despite facing major competition, secured a strong second weekend hold as its past predecessors have enjoyed, and depending on the actual, its second weekend might come in as the highest gross in the long-running franchise. The 37th entry in the series is on target for a ¥4 billion ($35 million+) total.

>La La Land has begun to slow down a bit following the Oscar buzz it benefited from last week, but it's still showing signs of a long run ahead with a very good third weekend hold. There's still a likely possibility of it reaching as much as ¥3.5 billion ($30 million+) or more, which could make it the third highest-grossing live-action musical in the market (behind only The Phantom of the Opera and Les Miseables).

>The latest Precure film actually came in higher than the past few films in the franchise if estimates turn out to be accurate. It's still down a good bit compared to some of the earlier this this decade, but an increase is an increase, and the franchise surely needs the positive news.

>Your Name. seemed like it may have been bumped out of the Top 10 this weekend, but another good hold has kept it there for yet another weekend - its 29th-consecutive week in the Top 10. It broke Spirited Away's 26-consecutive week run in the Top 10 two weeks ago, and it's simply adding to its incredible record that may never be broken.

Remaining in the Top 10 is also pretty crucial at this point, too, with Spring Break coming up in two weeks. There's still a lot of notable films to be released to take advantage of the holiday period, and films that have fallen outside of the Top 10 are usually victims of harsh screen/showtimes cuts, so a Top 10 ranking this weekend is very important and should maintain its presence at the box office into April.

Post Re: Japan Box Office: WKND Estimates (Moana Debuts)
The WOM is pretty good as well, it'll be exciting to see how it hold over the weekdays, btw both Moana and Frozen had to compete with Doraemon in their first weekend, even the release pattern was same, four months prior to US, the only thing that set them apart for now is the OSCAR, it surely played a big role for Frozen's long run.

With sing releasing next week, we might see 5 animated films in TOP 10.

Does the Spring Break boost start the upcoming weekend or the weekend after? When does it end?

Spring Break typically occurs the last week (7-10 days) of March, so this upcoming weekend won't be affected. The weekend frames themselves are usually unaffected though during Spring Break - the weekdays is where the real boost is during the holiday week.

Also, I had a very, very long day, so I'm going to relax tonight and postpone the Weekend Actuals/Chart Updates until tomorrow evening. Sorry guys, but I'm just drained.

I was personally hoping for it to reach #2 all-time behind Spirited Away but still an insanely impressive run nonetheless. I wonder when we will see another film reach these heights again. I used to think these phenomenons occured only once in a decade, but then here comes Your Name just 2.5 years after Frozen with a similarily mindblowing run.

Graph update as I get actual Your Name figure for week 29.
Impressive run is about to come to an end.
25 billion is still possible through revised figure.

In the next 5 weeks I might add Moana if it has a good run (I hope).
And we'll have the conclusion of Your Name phenomenal in Japan.
Now what I want to know is how well it gonna perform in North America.

As much I've heard, it'll have limited release in US, that was expected from Funimation, but still $10-$15 M is achievable for a film with such hype, although it really didn't won any major awards which could've benefited the distributor to bargain more screens.

Your Name. is going to reach ¥25 billion, and it should do so in mid/late April. Its dailies have been up versus last week so far, and it's not even Spring Break yet (two weeks away). If it's able to remain flat this upcoming weekend, or experience a small decline, it might be able to achieve a 30th-consecutive week in the Top 10 before heading into the Spring Break holiday period.

I wouldn't count on it leaving wide release until at least mid-May (post-Golden Week), its 37th/38th week. It came in 10th place this past weekend, its 29th-consecutive week in the Top 10, and it's still playing wider (theater count) than every film in release aside from three. It's also not even being released on home video until October (14 months after opening), and could continue to play in theaters until then.

This past Weekend's Actuals & Chart Updates will be posted in an hour or two.

>Moana finally reaches the land of the rising sun, and although it came in lower than estimates due to a surprisingly low avg. ticket price, it still posted a strong opening weekend selling 466,480 admissions over the weekend frame on 568 screens. And since opening on Friday, its 3-day total admissions reached an impressive 568,882. Its opening weekend is 42% greater than Zootopia; 2% lesser than Big Hero 6; and 23% lesser than Frozen.

There was little doubt that the Polynesian animated adventure was going to be a hit in Japan, and it's likely setting course for a total north of ¥6 billion ($50 million+), with potential for more; perhaps even as much as ¥7 billion+ ($60 million+) if WOM is similar to its studio predecessors.

Japan is a lock to become Moana's top international market by a considerable margin, and should propel the film above the $400 million mark at the foreign box office and $650 million at the worldwide box office.

>Doraemon, despite facing major competition, secured a strong second weekend hold and claimed the biggest second weekend, and two-week total, ever in the long-running franchise. The 37th entry in the series is well on track for a ¥4 billion ($35 million+) total.

>I mistakenly kept calling Let's Go, Jets! the latest Precure film all weekend, when it's not! The Spring Precure film opens this upcoming weekend - my bad! Anyway, the Cheerdance film came in fourth, selling 159,935 admissions over the weekend across 300 screens. This is a solid debut, and one that should result in a ¥1 billion (~$10 million) total.

>Your Name. seemed like it may have been bumped out of the Top 10 this weekend, but another good hold has kept it there for yet another weekend - its 29th-consecutive week in the Top 10. It has now sold 18,988,172 admissions. It broke Spirited Away's 26-consecutive week run in the Top 10 two weeks ago, and with 29-consecutive weeks in the Top 10 now, its record may never be broken.

Won't it be end of the tracking when Your Name drop from top 10 and we've to follow the accummulate gross through all time rank from kogyotsushin only?
Anyway, Your Name just break another record for widest gap between wide release date and home release date (14 months). I thought it gonna come out in late August, exactly one year just like Spirited Away (with October being the home release date in UK).

I partially pay for a subscription to bunkatsushin, a trade paper/web service that provides daily/weekly data for the movie, music, and broadcasting industries, with a couple friends. It provides revenue and admission* figures for many films that have fallen out of the Top 10.

The Japanese movie industry consists of nine major distribution companies that typically account for ~85% of the national box office, and as long as a film is distributed by one of them, they're continuously updated on bunkatsushin until they're hardly earning anything week-to-week (99% of their total is typically tracked).

But... the subscription is very expensive (hence why I thrice split the cost), coming in at ¥18,000 ($150+) a month for just the basic movie industry newsletter alone, and ¥23,000 ($200+) for the Pro service.

*Admission figures are the selling point since they're not as widely available as revenue figures.

We'll have to wait and see. I know that's a poor "answer", but there are still a few variables to consider going forward: Firstly, we'll have to see the screen count/showtimes it has going into Spring Break in two weeks; the holiday week could give the film a good boost. Secondly, once Spring Break is over and we're in April, it'll have Golden Week (beginning April 29th) to look toward and will hopefully still be playing on a sufficient number of screens/showtimes to take advantage of this holiday period because it's one of the three strongest weeks of the entire year.

It's going to reach ¥25 billion (~$236 million) at the very least, which will be ~19.26 million admissions. However, if it's still pulling in decent numbers, even when it falls out of the Top 10, and remains playing on enough screens/showtimes as I mentioned above to take advantage of the upcoming holiday periods, maybe it can climb closer to ¥25.5 billion (~$240 million) and ~19.64 million admissions.

Corpse it seems that YN will be out of Top 10 next week. Do you see it coming back with Spring break and April holidays? It just needs 4 more weeks inside Top 10 to beat SA's tally.

Sing has never been on the spotlight and still sitting with a WW gross of around $600M, so much for taking animals!
Any early prediction?

I'm not sure what to predict for Sing, honestly. I talked about it a couple weeks ago here, and ultimately, I don't see it having the appeal of the Despicable Me films or Minions, nor of The Secret Life of Pets, to breakout. I think it'll do alright, probably reaching ¥2 billion (~$20 million) or so - we'll see.

The biggest issue is the film's biggest marketing angle being a singing contest featuring popular songs, but... none of the songs or their artists featured are popular in Japan (besides Taylor Swift, who has had a little success). Western artists/songs rarely chart in Japan these days (the music industry is dominated by Japanese acts).
