Post Re: Japan Box Office: Most Consecutive Weeks

It also has a good chance of being in the Top 5 next weekend, too, so an 11-consecutive week in the Top 5 is possible. 12 or more, however, doesn't look doable, so I'm doubtful that it'll join the list of films in the list below:

Most-Consecutive Weeks in the Top 10 [1998-]
26 - Spirited Away [July 21-22 to Jan. 12-13] (2001-2002)

Post Re: Japan Box Office: Godzilla Back Home
Godzilla looks pretty healthy so far today (Friday opening), but nothing indicating it's going to see a huge opening this weekend.

My early projection for Friday is ¥150-175 million ($1.5-1.7 million). Friday's normally account for around 20% of the 3-day take (+/-5% for adult/kid films), so an opening weekend of ¥450-550 million ($4.5/5.5 million) with a 3-day total of ¥600-700 million ($6/7 million) perhaps based on Friday's ticket sales so far. I'd lean closer to the low-end of both ranges though to account for any old fans of the franchise coming out early.

I haven't checked Saturday pre-sales for the film yet though.

An opening in this range would get it to ¥3.5-4 billion ($35/40 million) with normal legs.

Weekend Forecast (07/26-27)

Image

01 (--) ¥520 million ($5.1 million), 0, ¥690 million ($6.8 million), Godzilla (Toho) NEW
02 (01) ¥387 million ($3.8 million), -19%, ¥4.05 billion ($39.8 million), Maleficent (Disney) Week 4
03 (03) ¥254 million ($2.5 million), -33%, ¥1.10 billion ($10.8 million), Memories of Marnie (Toho) Week 2
04 (02) ¥216 million ($2.1 million), -45%, ¥880 million ($8.7 million), Pokemon XY: The Cocoon of Destruction & Diancie (Toho) Week 2
05 (--) ¥190 million ($1.8 million), 0, ¥190 million ($1.8 million), Eight Ranger 2 (Toho) NEW
06 (05) ¥94 million ($0.92 million), -31%, ¥1.40 billion ($13.8 million), Edge of Tomorrow (Warner Bros.) Week 4
07 (04) ¥90 million ($0.88 million), -47%, ¥375 million ($3.7 million), Kamen Rider Gaim the Movie: The Great Soccer Match! (Toei) Week 2
08 (--) ¥70 million ($0.69 million), 0, ¥70 million ($0.69 million), Time Trip App (Toei) NEW
09 (06) ¥61 million ($0.60 million), -24%, ¥600 million ($5.9 million), Say, "I Love You" (Shochiku) Week 3
10 (07) ¥47 million ($0.46 million), -39%, ¥25.25 billion ($248.2 million), Frozen (Disney) Week 20

>Godzilla performed well yesterday, and ticket sales so far this morning look pretty good, too. I wouldn't say it's guaranteed to open above ¥500 million ($5 million), but it appears strong enough right now to do so. Godzilla should also break Disney's 19-consecutive week hold atop the box-office, too.

>Eight Ranger 2 should open a little more than the previous film.

>Memories of Marnie and Pokemon XY are likely to switch places in their second weekends. As long as Marnie is above ¥1 billion ($10 million) after Sunday, it should be able to reach ¥4 billion ($40 million). That's certainly less than Studio Ghibli was hoping for, but it would be a respectable finish.

>And you know.. Frozen may leave the Top 10 this weekend. I forgot Time Trip App was opening, and while it won't do much, it'll place in the Top 10 for sure. Planes 2 and Mission Impossible: Samurai! are probably going to have a better weekend holds, too. I'll leave Frozen in 10th for now, but I don't think it's going to make it.

>Godzilla is looking good first thing this morning. That's about 30% ahead of its early morning admissions yesterday at the same point in time.

>Eight Ranger 2 starts off the day quite strong, but I'm sure it's inflated right now from the fans of the band going first thing today. It'll gradually fall behind Marnie and Maleficent, and maybe Pokemon XY.

Maleficent has been very, very weak in the mornings but incredibly strong in the evening (the rate it climbs after about 2PM has been crazy), indicating it has very little family/kid appeal and very strong teen (couple)/adult appeal. Which is a bit unusual you'd think.

03. 18,741 - Eight Ranger 2 (NEW)

09. 3,205 - Time Trip App (NEW)
10. 2,108 (-52%) - Frozen (Week 20)

Only Toho Cinemas Saturday Admissions (As of 02:30PM)
17,206 - Godzilla (NEW)
12,741 - Eight Ranger 2 (NEW)

10,371 (-63%) - Pokemon XY: The Cocoon of Destruction & Diancie (Week 2)
9,248 (-25%) - Maleficent (Week 4)

1,843 - Time Trip App (NEW)
1,142 (-53%) - Frozen (Week 20)

Godzilla is looking strong at the mid-day point and should break 35,000 at Toho Cinemas for the day, and 60,000 at the other cinemas when combined. It looks on track for an opening weekend of 350-400,000 admissions and ¥500-550 million ($5-5.5 million).

And Eight Ranger 2 is showing some very solid strength. It might be able to break into the Top 5 rather than settle for 5th over the weekend.

Godzilla might actually do 40,000 (Toho)/70,000 (others) for the day. It really should play stronger into the evening instead of just matching the morning/afternoon business. If it does 40,000/70,000 for Saturday, it could do over 400,000 admissions and ¥600 million ($6 million) over the weekend.

Very good for Godzilla. Outpacing its morning/afternoon showings in the evening/night may be a sign it won't be as frontloaded as it could have been. I'm pretty confident it can hit ¥600 million ($6 million) for the weekend.

*Stage Greeting/Discount Day boost.

Best comparison film to predict the multipliers for Godzilla? Having played better in the evening, it should be attracting an older audience, but it also did pretty good in the morning which may mean it has some senior citizen appeal, too.

I'd go with The Wind Rises and The Kiyosu Conference as having the most audience overlap right now. Both appealed to an older audience, but not so old that their morning shows were greater than their evening showings.

10. 464 (+0.0%) - Time Trip App (NEW)
*Same point in time.

Godzilla about 10% ahead of Saturday right now at the same point in time, but it'll need to maintain this lead since theaters have fewer night showings on Sundays. Good start though.

Eight Ranger 2 is way down from Saturday right now due to pre-sales and the fanbase rush from yesterday.

Maleficent is going to enjoy its regular huge Sunday increase, and that's also a very good number for Memories of Marnie. It really needs to recover today to make up for yesterday's poor hold.

Planes 2 down from Saturday at the moment is peculiar. It should see a much stronger Sunday than Saturday given it's suppose to be skewing really young.

Godzilla gains a little more over Saturday at the same point, continuing to look very healthy.

Eight Ranger 2 is still down a lot from Saturday, but should gradually recover a bit more throughout the day.

Planes 2 is in the positive now, but not by much. There's a lot of films that are attracting kids in release right now, so it could be suffering from competition.

I suspect the Japanese were intrigued by how Hollywood handled one of their babies, but the $5.1m opening, only a little above the #2 film, does not suggest that it will make a huge gross.

It's going higher than $5.1 million. Saturday was a bit stronger than originally thought, and so far Sunday is outpacing Saturday. It should get near $6 million or a little higher. $6 million would get it above $40 million with normal legs. I wouldn't rule out $50 million yet, either, depending on how the rest of Sunday behaves.

Well $50m is great, but what's the audience reaction to it so far? No expected backlash?

*Same point in time.

Godzilla continues to outpace Saturday by double digits.

Pokemon XY is only about 6,000 admissions away from beating its Saturday total. It'll probably do it in the next hour.

Eight Ranger 2 is starting to stabilize a bit after being down 50/60+ earlier in the day from yesterday.

CUE DREAM JAM-BOREE is a Sunday only live-broadcast at 9 theaters. It's only the second musical live-broadcast I've seen rank (even if its just for a short period) since Ayumi Hamasaki's concert earlier this year.
