Wow...will this Pokemon movie even beat movie 5's gross ?

Do you know the budget for these movies ? I trust they're still profitable even with this declining gross ?

Post Re: Japan Box Office: 07/24-25 (Usual Locations - Sat. Resul
Don't take its Saturday decline to mean too much right now. It'll recover some tomorrow and could still avoid a 50% second weekend drop, which is in-line with most of the previous films which drop in the mid/high 40s in their second weekends.

But, it could end up below the fifth movie and become the lowest-grossing in the franchise. It's 50/50 right now.

Saturday was also potentially hurt by advance tickets going on sale for the next Yo-kai Watch film. It doesn't release until December, but tickets went on sale across Japan at 06:30AM Saturday morning.

Impressive pics. Still, I doubt the second YW movie will open above or outgross the first. Kind of like Pokemon back in the late 90s really.

The Boy and the Beast came back and won Sunday in its third weekend. Quite impressive, though largely due to the very troubling drop for Hero 2.

Weekend Estimates will be posted shortly.

>Hero 2 should hold onto the #1 position for a second weekend, but this estimated 50%+ drop is really, really concerning. It's easily the biggest drop when compared to any other blockbuster TV show sequels like Umizaru or Bayside Shakedown, and just in general, a 50%+ second weekend drop is very poor.

Also, being at sub-¥2 billion after two weeks after its impressive debut isn't a good sign, either... It still has Summer weekdays and Obon Festival coming up soon, so it'll have plenty of support, but achieving the ¥5 billion blockbuster milestone has just become unlikely.

>The Boy and the Beast remains strong in second place, and appears to have nearly reclaimed the #1 spot in its third weekend. Mamoru Hosoda's latest is still tracking about 60% ahead of 2012's Wolf Children, so the Beast should still be on course for over ¥6 billion (~$50 million), if not ¥7 billion+ (~$60 million+).

It's incredibly likely to outgross Hero 2 now and claim the Summer crown, unless one of the upcoming August releases (Attack on Titan; Jurassic World; Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation; or Japan's Longest Day) can breakout and surpass it.

>Inside Out enjoys a healthy second weekend, with a drop in the middle of Pixar's past releases: Cars 2 (-47%), Ratatouille (-39%) > Brave (-32%) > Toy Story 3 (-26%) > Cars (-25%) > Up (-17%) > Monsters University (-16%) > Wall-E (-09%).

And its weekday business was strong, so a sub-30% weekend drop is impressive. I wouldn't worry about its future legs one bit, as it's very likely to still exceed ¥4 billion (~$30 million).

>Pokemon's drop is worrisome if it stays above 50%. Almost every Pokemon film has avoided a 50% second weekend drop, so this would certainly put it in danger of becoming the lowest-grossing Pokemon film in the series. Hopefully estimates end up being a little low.

>Avengers: Age of Ultron moved into the Top 10 Marvel/DC films over the weekend, and could still crack the Top 5 (joining the original Spider-Man trilogy and its own predecessor). I'll update the list and post it when actuals come in tomorrow.

Last year's Pokemon movie's 9 day multiplier was 2.94. If this one does the same, it's looking at a 2.675 billion yen total just ahead of movie 5's gross. This means that if Corpse's estimates decrease just a little and/or if legs continue to worsen, it might indeed become the lowest grossing movie in the franchise.

In addition, given that ticket prices increased a bit last year, I think the lowest attended movie in the franchise title is already a given.

10 (09) ¥30,897,900 ($250,000), -31%, ¥384,054,100 ($3.1 million), Shaun the Sheep Movie (Tohokushinsha) Week 4

A close battle at the top of the chart this weekend with only 30,424 admissions separating the Top 3 films.

>Hero 2 pulls of the expected second week at #1, but its harsh 50% decline has left it vulnerable. Fuji TV's sequel to its original hit series/movie sold 270,605 admissions over its second weekend, bringing its running 9-day total above ¥1.9 billion with 1.46 million admissions.

The film finds itself in a worrisome position, too, with a sub-¥2 billion 9-day total. That's pretty bad after a ¥1 billion+ 3-day debut last week. It's already fallen ~25% behind Umizaru: Brave Hearts after nine days, despite having an opening weekend nearly on par with it. If it doesn't stabilize fast, as in this week, it's going to be in for some harsh screen/showtime cuts once the second wave of Summer releases hit in August.

And if it doesn't manage to stabilize, it's likely to miss the ¥5 billion (~$40 million) blockbuster milestone, which would be very disappointing for Toho, but especially for Fuji TV since their network and movies have been hurting recently.

***************

>The Boy and the Beast holds steady in second place, and was pretty close to reclaiming the #1 position in ticket sales in its third weekend. Mamoru Hosoda and Studio Chizu's latest continues to perform very well, selling 249,722 tickets over the weekend.

The animated hit is still tracking 60% ahead of Hosoda's prior film, 2012's Wolf Children, at the same point-of-release, which puts it on track for over ¥6 billion ($50 million+) and possibly over 5 million admissions, as well. It will be, however, heading into Obon Week with a higher weekly performance, so if it survives the upcoming releases, maybe it'll reach the ¥7 billion (~$60 million) milestone.

***************

>Inside Out enjoyed a good second weekend decline after its fairly soft debut last week, ad when combined with its strong weekday performance, should set it up for a long upcoming run.

Disney/Pixar's latest sold 240,181 admissions in its second frame, and exceeded 1 million admissions after just nine days in release, already more than three times its opening weekend admissions. Its total at the present time is hard to project since it's still quite early, but exceeding the ¥4 billion ($30 million+) mark is probably more likely now, and maybe it'll come close to the ¥5 billion (~$40 million) blockbuster milestone.

***************

>Terminator: Genisys rises to fourth place, up one spot over last weekend.

The latest film in the series is having a respectable run so far, especially compared to its performance in the US and some other international markets, and broke the ¥2 billion milestone over the weekend. It's also maintained a constant 85/86% behind Terminator: Salvation since it opened; and should be able to improve on that percentage somewhat with Obon Week approaching.

So, it still has a very good shot at achieving the ¥3 billion (~$25 million) milestone, which is a pretty strong total, especially for a rebooted/revived tired Hollywood franchise in Japan these days.

***************

>Pokemon XY: Hoopa and the Clash of Ages falls to fifth place in its second weekend, down over 50%.

Every Pokemon film has a pretty big second weekend drop, almost always between 45-49%, so this year's film isn't too far from the average, however... It's only the third Pokemon film (since 2001) to drop over 50% in its second frame, and at 50.9%, it's actually the biggest second weekend decline in the series.

This is a troubling sign, especially after its poor opening last weekend, which earned it the second lowest-opening in the franchise history. Pokemon, as an entire brand, has been on the decline in Japan over the past couple years, so this isn't too surprising, but it's still sad/disappointing.

***************

>Avengers: Age of Ultron appeared to be very frontloaded after its very impressive opening weekend, and while it's still frontloaded, it has managed to stabilize itself.

And with a fair fourth weekend and a running total now exceeding ¥2.5 billion, it'll definitely gross above ¥3 billion (~$25 million) with Obon Week coming up next month. It'd probably get there regardless, so it should be aiming for a finish closer to the ¥3.5 billion (~$30 million) mark, which would almost be on par with its predecessor's ¥3.61 billion total.

***************

>And quick mention of Mad Max: Fury Road exceeding ¥1.5 billion in its sixth-weekend. It certainly isn't a huge success, but it's still quite impressive for an R-15 film, and a sequel to an old Hollywood franchise.

Ah so DBZ had it's final total given? ¥3.74 billion, it went up a nice amount. Didn't reach the ¥4 billion goal but I don't see how they could be disappointed with that.

What did the last two Terminator movies make in Yen?

¥8.79 billion - Terminator 2: Judgement Day
¥8.20 billion - Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines
¥3.32 billion - Terminator: Salvation

Terminator: Genisys will probably reach ¥3 billion, but it's unlikely to surpass its predecessor. A ¥3 billion+ finish is still rather impressive, though, considering it could have performed much worse. ¥3 billion is roughly the equivalent of a $150 million earner in the U.S.

I don't know the gross of the first film. It didn't earn more than ¥1 billion in distribution income in 1985, when it was released, so its gross would have been quite small, definitely sub-¥2 billion (or even sub-¥1.5 billion).

Corpse got a source for the Pokemon numbers for the weekend?

All the usual Japanese sites I go to just state that it was number 4 and that the Idol movie reached the 2 billion yen threshold.

Terminator 2 and 3 were monsters in Japan. Genisys seems to be doing well but it ain't coming close to those two.
