% changes versus last week.

Everything is way, way down compared to last Friday (though Orange managed to hold on well) since last Friday was New Years Day (first of the month discounts and a holiday, so...).

As for the debuts...

Star Wars VII still posting a ¥100 million daily is impressive and it'll remain atop the box-office for at least two more weeks.

Yo-Kai Watch 2 is way down now that school is back in session since 90% of its audience consists of elementary aged children (and their parents). It'll be making an overwhelming majority of its earnings over the weekends from this point forward, so don't let the huge decline be misleading.

Kizumonogatari - Part 1: Blood and Iron performed very well, but these films are usually a bit frontloaded and don't perform as well over the weekend after opening on Friday. It's hard to predict these films and it's barely a wide release (108 screens), so it's doing just fine from what I can tell, and should break ¥100 million this weekend pretty easily.

Bridge of Spies had a mediocre first day, which is to be expected. Its audience is probably exclusively adults with a small portion of the senior crowd, so there won't be any initial frontloading due to the Friday release, and it'll hold fine going into the weekend. I'm not sure that it'll reach the ¥100 million mark, or if it does, it won't be by much.

I'll post the Weekend Forecast in a bit.

>Star Wars VII is holding as expected, and a possible sub-40% weekend drop following last weekend's increase is solid. It doesn't appear it'll drop-off drastically after the holidays.

>Yo-Kai Watch 2 is also holding fine post the holidays. If it can manage to drop closer to 30% (or sub-30%) this weekend, it'll continue its streak of improving upon last year's weekend holds.

>Kizumonogatari Part 1 remains difficult to read, but the fact that its Saturday is well-below its Friday is evidence it's pretty frontloaded. It'll still, quite comfortably, exceed the ¥100 million mark this weekend, so that's impressive enough.

>Bridge of Spies is off to a slow start, but assuming it increases today (Sunday) or stays flat due to skewing older, it still has a good chance of exceeding the ¥100 million mark this weekend.

>Pink and Gray is a limited release (77% of locations accounted for above), so it won't make the Top 5, though it's still looking at a decent debut.

>Life's Promise is underwhelming and looks to miss a ¥100 million debut this weekend. Not too surprising, but still disappointing.

Thanks to a very strong Sunday, the post-New Year drops this year are notably good.

>Star Wars: The Force Awakens easily retains its position atop the box office, and delivered quite the impressive fourth weekend based on estimates. A sub-30% drop would be very strong after its increase last weekend over the holiday frame.

After four weeks, it's either extremely close to 5 million admissions or just exceeded the mark. The Force Awakens should go on to exceed 7 million admissions, if not make a play at 8 million admissions. So, it's looking at a final gross around the ¥11 billion ($90-100 million) mark.

>Yo-Kai Watch 2 achieved its third-consecutive improvement upon its predecessor's weekend holds, so it's bound to continue this trend for most, if not all, of its remaining time in theaters giving it better legs than the first film.

After four weeks, Yo-Kai Watch 2 likely exceeded 4 million admissions (~4.1 million) and should be on course to eventually reach 5 million admissions for a gross around ¥5.5 billion ($45-50 million).

>Kizumonogatari - Part 1: Blood and Iron is barely a wide release, playing on 108 screens, so a debut possibly above ¥150 million is quite impressive. And since Friday, it likely exceeded ¥200 million as well.

>Bridge of Spies is off to a modest start, but I imagine legs should be good or even strong if it does well this awards season in the U.S. However, I'm not following the award season, but it doesn't look that strong to me. All of the Oscar contenders are released between January-April in Japan to take advantage of any potential nominations/wins at the Academy Awards.

>Life's Promise and Pink and Gray missed the ¥100 million mark, which is disappointing for the former, but no so much for the latter. Pink and Gray had the better debut of the two seeing as it's a limited release playing on 96 screens; so in that regard, its debut is pretty solid.

>Orange looks to have exceeded the ¥2.5 billion mark after five weeks, or should be super close to the milestone. Either way, come the next couple days, it'll have outgrossed every other shojo/josei manga live-action adaptation since 2009's Nodame Cantabile. It's been one of the most impressive performers of the past several months.

>Spectre is very close (~¥25 million) to overtaking Skyfall to become the highest-grossing 007 film. If it doesn't get there with actuals, it'll certainly do so on Monday.

Monday is a national holiday, Coming of Age Day, so weekend actuals will be delayed until Tuesday.

Post Re: Japan Box Office: Weekend Results (01/09-10)
Alright, so the weekend actuals for the full Top 10 has almost certainly been delayed for the week. So, I'll just proceed with the older weekend results format that I used to post every week instead.

All of the updated totals have been released, so the only numbers missing will be the weekend grosses of a couple holdovers in the Top 10.

Weekend Results (01/09-10)

01 (01) Star Wars: The Force Awakens (Disney) Week 4
02 (02) Yo-Kai Watch: Great King Enma and the 5 Stories, Nyan! (Toho) Week 4
03 (--) Kizumonogatari - Part 1: Blood and Iron (Toho Video Division) NEW
04 (--) Bridge of Spies (Fox) NEW

05 (03) Orange (Toho) Week 5
06 (--) Pink and Gray (Asmik Ace) NEW
07 (--) Life's Promise (Toho) NEW

08 (04) Living With My Mother (Shochiku) Week 5
09 (05) 007: Spectre (Sony) Week 6
10 (06) Chibi Maruko-chan: The Movie (Toho) Week 3

>Star Wars: The Force Awakens retains its position atop the box office, and did so by posting an impressive 25% drop coming off an increase over last weekend's holiday frame.

The seventh entry in the Star Wars series grossed ¥619,644,800 ($5.28 million) with 391,207 admissions, which after including Monday's earnings (holiday), brings its four week total up to an incredible ¥8,241,016,200 ($68.69 million) with 5,337,920 admissions.

Its running total is the fifth highest of all-time after four weeks in release, and the impressive post-New Year hold is an indication that post-holiday legs should be solid. It'll exceed the ¥10 billion ($85-90 million) uber-blockbuster milestone by the end of the month with ~6.5 million admissions (possibly in two weeks time), making it the first live-action film since 2010's Alice in Wonderland to achieve this milestone.

Also, at its current pace and projecting solid-to-good legs from this point forward, it'll probably exceed the ¥11 billion ($90-95 million) mark as well (~7.1 million admissions), and I wouldn't rule out ¥12 billion ($100-105 million) with ~7.8 million admissions yet either. In terms of revenue and admissions, it'll easily beat Episode II and Episode III and come quite close to matching Episode I in both categories as well.

>Yo-Kai Watch: Great King Enma and the 5 Stories, Nyan! stays strong in second place, dropping an impressive 21% in its fourth weekend, and yet again improving upon last year's film's weekly holds.

The second Yo-Kai Watch film grossed ¥297,244,600 ($2.53 million) with 258,016 admissions over its fourth weekend frame, and after including Monday's take (holiday), brings its running four week total up to an impressive ¥4,812,386,500 ($40.17 million) with 4,398,002 admissions.

Since it has improved upon its predecessor's weekly holds every week, that's unlikely to change, so its post-holiday legs should be pretty decent. It will exceed the ¥5 billion blockbuster milestone over the upcoming weekend with ~4.6 million admissions, and should go on to exceed ¥5.5 billion admissions with 5 million+ admissions by the end of its run.

>Kizumonogatari - Part 1: Blood and Iron debuted quite impressively in third place, despite playing on just 108 screens. The first film in the planned series grossed ¥177,058,000 ($1.51 million) with 131,973 admissions over the weekend.

>Bridge of Spies settles for a fourth place debut, which is slightly disappointing rank wise, but considering the two blockbusters from December still holding strong, it's better than it looks.

Spielberg's latest earned ¥141,867,600 ($1.21 million) with 112,937 admissions across 348 screens over the weekend. And after including its Friday and Monday earnings (first day and holiday), its four day total reached ¥251,898,600 ($2.14 million) with 203,974 admissions. Unless legs prove to be unexpectedly poor (unlikely), it'll be a safe ¥1 billion earner.

>Orange continues its excellent performance into its fifth weekend by remaining in the Top 5.

After five weeks in release, and including Monday's earnings (holiday), its total is up to a nice ¥2,649,859,500 ($22.03 million) with 2,257,418 admissions. It has outgrossed every shojo/josei manga adaptation since 2009, and has a good shot actually reaching the ¥3 billion mark (~2.5 million admissions).

>Pink and Gray only came in sixth place, but its debut in rather impressive for a limited release; especially since it managed to edge out the film below in gross (a bit less in admissions). The Yukisada Isao directed film earned ¥102,127,000 ($870,000) with 77,769 admissions on 96 screens. Not bad, not bad.

>Life's Promise settles for a very poor seveenth place debut, but on the bright side, it managed to barely break the ¥100 million mark over the weekend. Playing on 291 screens, it earned ¥100,525,200 ($856,000) with 81,868 admissions over its debut weekend. It won't become a ¥1 billion earner, so its ultimately going to be a disappointment.

>And finally, but certainly not least considering the major accomplishment, Spectre has grossed ¥2,776,435,900 ($23.19 million) with 2,112,130 admissions after six weeks in release. It has officially outgrossed Skyfall's ¥2.75 billion total to become the highest grossing 007 film of all-time in the market.

>Star Wars: The Force Awakens will repeat atop the box-office again this weekend, and Yo-Kai Watch: Great King Enma and the 5 Stories, Nyan! may hold onto its second place position for yet another weekend as well.

>Les saisons should do somewhat well and is probably the only threat to challenge Yo-Kai Watch for that second place position (unless a certain bear surprises this weekend), though it'll be a challenge to do so. Nature documentaries (and French imports) generally do good business in Japan, and it certainly has the seats and screen count to take advantage of, so let's see if audiences turn up.

>Paddington got picked up by Kino Films late last year following its stellar reviews (its 98% RT score is on its Japanese poster), and they have a lot of faith in the film given it's by far their widest release ever. It's a big dark horse, and has breakout potential.

I can't recall any Kino Films release making the Top 10 (at least above 9th/10th place), and while they've probably had a few Top 10 debuts in the past, I highly doubt any past releases did as well for them as Paddington will this weekend.

>In the Heart of the Sea will likely disappoint and maybe make the Top 5 with luck.

Early Weekend Prediction (Top 10 Ranking):

01 (01) Star Wars: The Force Awakens (Disney) Week 5
02 (02) Yo-Kai Watch: Great King Enma and the 5 Stories, Nyan! (Toho) Week 5
03 (--) Les saisons (Gaga) NEW
04 (--) Paddington (Kino Films) NEW

05 (04) Bridge of Spies (Fox) Week 2
06 (03) Kizumonogatari - Part 1: Blood and Iron (Toho Video Division) Week 2
07 (--) In the Heart of the Sea (Warner Bros.) NEW
08 (05) Orange (Toho) Week 6
09 (06) Pink and Gray (Asmik Ace) Week 2
10 (07) Life's Promise (Toho) Week 2

The full Weekend Forecast will be posted tomorrow.

Surprised and completely forgot that Paddington still had Japan left. I hope it does well there.

Paddington is doing pretty well. It's going to earn at least a third place debut this weekend, if not second place if it increases tomorrow (Sunday) to stay ahead of Yo-Kai Watch.

I didn't have time yesterday to post the Weekend Forecast, but I'll post Saturday's admissions from the usual locations soon.

Drops are pretty hard across the board, but now that New Year/Winter Break and last Monday's holiday are entirely finished, the declines aren't unexpected.

>Star Wars: The Force Awakens, as expected, will remain atop the box-office for a fifth-consecutive weekend (in gross). If next weekend's Nobunaga Concerto doesn't dethrone it, then it'll be occupying the #1 position for at least two, or three, more weeks.

>Paddington managed to finally bump Yo-Kai Watch out of the second place position, however, it's probably just at the usual locations above. Paddington isn't playing in as many theaters as Yo-Kai Watch outside of the usual locations, so it's still very unlikely to debut in second place on the national level. A third place debut is certainly nothing to be disappointed over though, and it'll be Kino Films' biggest debut by a considerable amount.

Anyway, Paddington is the only opener this weekend that has any shot at opening to ¥100 million. 78% of its overall theater count is accounted for above, so it's still going to be difficult reaching the mark over the weekend if Sunday doesn't increase.

>Les saisons didn't perform as well as I was expecting, and will certainly debut on the lower end of the nature documentaries list. Reviews, from what I read, are mixed, so perhaps that's the reason for its underwhelming start so far.

>In the Heart of the Sea disappoints as expected and won't make the Top 5 in its debut.

>Orange doesn't care if holidays or anything else is over as it continues to post excellent holds. A sixth weekend in the Top 5 looks very likely, as does its chances of reaching the ¥3 billion milestone. That'd give it a multiplier of nearly 10.

Post Re: Japan Box-Office: Top Distributor of 2015
Distributor Toho was named the #1 distributor in Japan for a 10th-consecutive year (2006-), with their films earning ¥73,151,173,378 (~$610 million), up 0.3% over last year.

>2010 - ¥74,869,612,938 ($902 million) [33.9% Market Share]
>2012 - ¥74,135,772,802 ($882 million) [38.0% Market Share]
>2008 - ¥73,914,598,446 ($725 million) [37.9% Market Share]
>2015 - ¥73,151,173,378 ($610 million) [??.?% Market Share]
>2014 - ¥72,965,406,502 ($694 million) [35.2% Market Share]
>2013 - ¥67,332,892,704 ($686 million) [34.7% Market Share]
>2009 - ¥65,493,311,500 ($720 million) [31.8% Market Share]
>2011 - ¥59,111,105,930 ($749 million) [32.6% Market Share]

Toho's yearly increase/decrease is generally similar to the overall yearly box-office increase/decrease, so 2015 is likely to increase over 2014, especially with Hollywood performing much better in 2015 than many years prior.

2014 [¥207.034 billion] is the third biggest year ever (in revenue), so 2015's likely increase will make it the third biggest year ever, and there's still a chance of beating 2004 [¥210.914 billion] to become the second biggest year. However, 2010 [¥220.737 billion] will remain the biggest year.

Full 2015 Results will released by the Motion Picture Association of Japan the last week of this month.

>Star Wars: The Force Awakens remains atop the box-office for its fifth-consecutive week, selling an additional 236,219 admissions over the weekend, bringing its five week total up to 5,840,368 admissions.

The seventh entry in the Star Wars franchise has exceeded the ¥9 billion milestone, and is well on its way to exceeding the ¥10 billion uber-blockbuster milestone. It won't get there next weekend, but it'll certainly reach the mark by the end of January. It'll be only the second live-action film this decade, since 2010's Alice in Wonderland, to reach this major milestone.

Also, after just five weeks in release, it has nearly outgrossed Revenge of the Sith (¥9.17 billion) and Attack of the Clones (¥9.35 billion). It'll surpass the former well before next weekend, and may even outgross the latter before next weekend, too. Outgrossing The Phantom Menace (¥12.85 billion) remains a long-shot, but it'll come much closer than most expected.

>Yo-Kai Watch: Great King Enma and the 5 Stories, Nyan! holds steady in its second place position during its fifth weekend in release. The second film in the massively popular multi-media franchise sold 137,368 tickets over its fifth weekend frame, bringing its five week total up to 4,572,584 admissions.

And after five weeks in release, it exceeded the ¥5 billion blockbuster milestone. If it follows its predecessor from this point forward, it'll end up grossing ~¥5.7 billion (~$48 million) with ~5.2 million admissions. That's down about 27% compared to the first film, however, it will have improved upon being down 35% on opening weekend. And selling over 5 million tickets again is a major accomplishment.

>Paddington finally reached Japanese shores, an entire full year after making its debut in most of the world last year.

The live-action adaptation of the popular Peruvian bear debuted on 315 screens, a new record for independent studio Kino Films, and sold a solid 99,913 admissions over the weekend frame. Kino Films picked up the film late last year, seeing the potential it had, along with the stellar reviews, and it has proven to be a excellent investment. I don't think it has ¥1 billion potential, unfortunately, but it should be aiming for ¥700/800 million ($6/7 million).

>Orange continues its incredible run by rising to fourth place in its sixth weekend of release, and actually managed to stay above the ¥100 million mark in the process. For comparison's sake, its sixth weekend is more than 1/3rd of its opening weekend.

I thought it'd have to crawl to the ¥3 billion milestone (and 2.5 million admissions), which would have been a huge achievement, but it's going to exceed the marks quite effortlessly now, and may end up closer to ¥3.5 billion. It's by far the highest-grossing shoji/josei adaptation this decade.

>Les saisons, the french nature documentary, came in nicely above estimates and broke the ¥100 million mark in its debut weekend. Released through independent distributor Gaga, the film sold 83,695 admissions over the weekend, and 96,792 admissions since opening on Friday.

Nature documentaries, as well as French imports, do solid business in Japan, and while this one is on the lower-end of long nature documentary list, it's still a fair enough opening.

>In the Heart of the Sea had to settle for a poor seventh place debut, which while not unexpected, is still very disappointing. The Ron Howard adaptation of the source material of the same name, only sold 63,901 admissions across 561 screens over the weekend.

Full List of Nominees

Sea Town Diary, directed by Koreeda Hirokazu, scored the most nominations with a stunning twelve nods. It's the favorite to sweep the awards this year, too. Last year, The Eternal Zero won in eight of its eleven nominated categories, including Picture and Director.

Animation of the Year should go to The Boy and the Beast or The Anthem of the Heart. Mamoru Hosoda's previous three films have all won the prize in their respective years, so the former is a good bet.

Best Foreign Language Picture is interesting this year. There's usually a clear frontrunner, or two, but this year's looks like a toss-up to me. I'm going with either American Sniper or Mad Max: Fury Road taking the prize home this year.
