Re: Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha: Keep in mind that since it's a late-night anime film, its ticket prices were likely very high (above ¥1,500). It came in 8th place in terms of admissions over the weekend (no admissions released, just the rank), but probably placed 7th in revenue. I don't know why no actual figures have been released for it yet... it's distributed by Shochiku, second biggest domestic distributor, and made the Top 10, so it's pretty unusual.

Ah, yeah if the list I saw was ranked by admissions rather than revenue, then it could well be higher in revenue. Just hope it can keep screens against the summer blockbusters.

Also, Your Name.'s final total was reported today and it did in fact exceed that ¥25 billion milestone (fourth film in history to do so). I'll have its total updated on the All-Time List posted a little later.

The DVD/Blu-Ray releases on Wednesday, 48 weeks after its theatrical debut.

Very impressive that it can slide from 249.4 to 250.3 even with just handful theaters...
But it's still screening right? so it might even slip to 250.5 or something in the end.

Weekend/Weekly Rankings are ranked in terms of admissions in Japan, so any list from a Japanese source will be in admissions rather than revenue.

Since it's a limited release, it shouldn't have any issue maintaining its current screen count throughout the rest of the summer.

I see you already know its new total.

I'm 99% certain ¥25.03 billion will end up as its reported final total since it took around 2 months or so to be updated from its final tracking total (¥24.94 billion), and the DVD/Blu-Ray release on Wednesday will likely halt any ongoing desire to see it at its final three theaters.

The reported shipment of 1.2 million discs is also encouraging since most of the time the entertainment industry, whether it's music, manga, gaming, etc., is able to gauge sales interest and move I'd say... 75%+ of the shipment figure.

Post Re: Japan Box Office: Top 100 Grossing Films
Your Name. had its last available total updated today, just two days before the film is released on DVD/Blu-Ray, to over ¥25 billion after 48 weeks in theatrical release. The film is still playing at a few locations, three after this upcoming Friday, but it's unlikely to go any higher given the home video release, so I'd take this updated total to be its final total unless otherwise reported at a later date.

Makoto Shinkai's phenomenon became the fourth film in history to ever reach the incredible milestone of ¥25 billion.

Just missed Princess Mononoke's multiplier. Great run for YN.

Opening Weekend was ¥98,053,000 ($881,000), no admissions released however (unusual).

It's alright, but perhaps a little disappointing. ¥500 million+ should be attainable, though, which is the figure you were hoping for.

Ouch, that leaves me pessimistic about ¥500m unless it has a great hold next week, and starts offering some serious bonuses. Kancolle got to ¥560m on a slightly higher open but took a while to do it, and Mahouka took 5 weeks on a ¥163m opening (both on less screens than Nanoha), so I guess it'll come down to how long we gets reports for. Since it obviously won't touch ¥500m in the weekend rankings so we'll need to wait for CineJun in like 2-3 months or something posted on the official website/with the BD solicit I guess.

Mostly I'm disappointed because I was hoping that ¥500m would be a floor for its performance (as that would still be a bit below the second recap film and this is new material), whereas now it's more like a best-case scenario. Barring some outstanding legs, which I don't anticipate, because there's not much reason for it to be particularly back-loaded... it's a niche franchise and the film isn't intended to be super newbie-friendly.

Sometimes late-night anime films such as this can be backloaded due to incentives, such as free bonuses, in after they debut. It's hard to say where it's headed, but I'd say ¥500 million is more likely than not.

>Despicable Me 3 easily claimed a second week atop the box office, and delivered an excellent drop in the process. The third entry in the Despicable Me series is outpacing every Illumination film after two weeks in release, up 12% compared to Minions, and after such a strong second weekend, it's very likely on track to become the studio's highest-grossing film in the market. Expect a total north of ¥5 billion ($45 million), and I wouldn't rule out a ¥6 billion ($50 million) total either.

>The Mummy achieved a solid second place debut, selling 220,615 admissions over the weekend frame across 574 screens; it sold 294,003 admissions since opening on Friday. Tom Cruise is arguably the biggest Hollywood draw ever in Japan, and this opening is further evidence to this claim considering its lackluster reception. Expect a total around ¥2.5 billion ($20 million+).

>I Want To Eat Your Pancreas settles for third place, selling a solid 189,976 admissions over the weekend frame across 322 screens; it sold 262,586 admissions since opening on Friday. The live-action adaptation of the novel of the same name is likely to have great legs, as most within the genre (tearjerkers) typically benefit from. Expect a total around ¥2 billion ($17/18 million).

>Gintama continues to hold well and will shortly become Warner Bros. highest-grossing film of 2017. The live-action adaptation of the popular manga/anime has exceeded 1.7 million admissions after three weeks in release. Expect a total around ¥4 billion ($35 million).

>Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales is still performing pretty well and became the fifth entry in the franchise to exceed the ¥5 billion blockbuster milestone; it has sold over 3.6 million admissions after five weeks in release. Expect a total around ¥7 billion ($60 million+) or a bit higher.

>Tokyo Ghoul came in a very disappointing sixth place, and failed to deliver an opening that's representative of its popularity in other mediums (most notably, manga sales). The live-action adaptation of the very popular source material only sold 165,876 admissions over the weekend on 306 screens. Expect a total around ¥1.5 billion ($12/13 million).

>Pokemon: I Choose You! fell slightly above the standard set by its predecessors in their third weekends, but its third weekend and three week total are higher than every film since 2012. Expect a total around ¥3.5 billion ($30 million).

Any chance for a Wonder Woman breakout in Japan? Batman v Superman and Suicide Squad didn't do all that well in the market, but Wonder Woman's reception has been on an entirely different level than those two, and big buzz for films that release late in Japan compared to the rest of the world often works out well for them.

I'd love for Wonder Woman to exceed BvS on a worldwide scale as well, but it'd really take a BIG number from Japan to accomplish that.

Yeah, that's very annoying. Japan just isn't what it used to be.

I don't think WW will jump THAT high from BvS even if it sees an increase. Superhero movies aren't big enough in Japan unless they are Spider-Man.

The drop is fine. Weekend holds, while important, aren't very important this time of year. On average, weekdays account for about 50% of a film's gross in the market. That 50% figure then increases or decreases depending on the key demographic, time of release, and reception of each individual film.

Since we're in late July/early August, most films are earning around 60% their weekly gross over the weekdays (that'll approach/exceed 70% come mid August). Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, for example, made 61% of its weekly gross over its weekdays last week for a 31% week-to-week decline (a better % than its weekend hold).

Given the very long track record of DC/Marvel films not performing well in the market, the chances of a breakout are doubtful. A DC/Marvel film is generally lucky to reach ¥1 billion ($10 million), and ¥2 billion ($20 million) is rare. ¥3 billion+ ($30 million) has only been achieved by every Spider-Man film (aside from Homecoming, which hasn't opened yet), the two Avengers films, and 1989 Batman. The original Spider-Man trilogy are the only DC/Marvel films to achieve blockbuster status (¥5 billion) in Japan.

However, your points are very valid and it's had a strong online presence for months. It's also a somewhat unique superhero release (lead female hero), which should benefit it as well. I'm sure it'll exceed ¥1 billion ($10 million), and ¥2 billion ($20 million) is doable but I wouldn't project much higher.

If it reaches ¥2 billion, it'll be only the third DC film to do it after 1981's Superman II and 1989's Batman, so it'd be a huge accomplishment.
