>Sword Art Online: Ordinal Scale debuted atop the box office quite easily, selling ~53% of its weekend admissions. Aniplex's SAO Movie Project sold an impressive 308,376 admissions over the weekend on only 151 screens.

This is Aniplex's biggest opener of all-time, as well as the biggest opener (in revenue) of 2017 so far. It can be very difficult to project where a film like this ends up after opening - sometimes they're very frontloaded, sometimes they're very leggy - so, we'll have to wait and see how it performes over the next week or two to get a clear indication of its potential. I'm pretty confident that it'll at least reach the ¥2 billion (~$20 million) milestone, however, since being so frontloaded to miss that mark is unlikely.

>One Week Friends, the live-action adaptation of the manga series, came in third place with a so-so start, selling 123,959 admissions over the weekend on 305 screens. It'll need to maintain an impressive week-to-week performance through mid-March in order to take advantage of the Spring Break boost, which it'll need if it's to reach the ¥1 billion (~$10 million) milestone.

>Miss Peregrine's Home For Peculiar Children delivered one of the better weekend holds in its third week of release and is going to clear the ¥1 billion (~$10 million) milestone next week. Tim Burton continues a very successful run in Japan, and Miss Peregrine should end up finishing around ¥1.3/1.4 billion (~$12 million) - enough to propel it above the $300 million worldwide mark at the box office.

>Your Name. achieves its 26th-consecutive week in the Top 10, the half-year milestone, tying up the record set by Spirited Away. After half-a-year in release, Makoto Shinkai's phenomenon has now sold 18,745,829 admissions. Next weekend is quite weak, the calm before the Spring Box Office Season begins next month, so a 27th-consecutive week, at the very least, is almost guaranteed as well, thus setting a new record.

Now that I had seen In this Corner of the World, I'm rooting for it. Your Name's meteor is nothing compare to In This Corner's 'meteor'

Thanks for the info again, it's great to know that the Japanese audience have the privilege to enjoy most of the foreign films without any restrictions and its really a decent market for H'wood films, although China did overtake Japan in recent years by a big margin, but they got limited quota and it isn't easy to pass through their censor board as well.

btw Studio Ponoc's debut film slated for July release http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9P883TzxWuQ (It's by the director of when marine was there)

I was shocked to see Your Name's international gross. I hadn't even heard of it.

I ran across the film on Mojo.

Oscars can ruin La La Land moment, but not its top weekend status in Japan.
Your Name move up one spot, but the per week gross is still declining at the rate I estimated in the graph in previous page (120 million yen in the latest week, 140 million yen the week before)
If it continues to gross 20 million yen less in each week (my prediction), it won't pass 25 billion milestone.

@Lilmac "Your name" has been on the news since early September when it hit the ¥10 B mark in Japan and from there it kept on massacring every record set by a Japanese film with the exception of few, it was a big hit in China as well and the 11th highest grossing foreign film of the year over there, literally China and Japan contributed more than 90% to the WW gross, it also open to number one in almost every asian market,
Check out these two film as well-

La La Land made 416 million yen (290,000 attendee), ranked first.
XXX made 145 million yen (115,000 attendee), ranked fourth.
Collateral Beauty ranked eighth.

Also, Japan Academy Prize this Saturday, I'm not sure how the boost from this award work. Maybe we've to wait one more week to see the effect, but March 10 is when Moana sail on sea of Japan.

Sorry guys, busy week indeed - lots of work last week and then I spent some time away over the weekend (Birthday).

I will post this weekend's actuals and chart updates tomorrow evening, when I'll have plenty of time. :)

It opens this upcoming weekend and should open, and finish, with similar numbers as the past few films have. It's a very consistent franchise, but it has begun to see an uptick in recent years.

A few notes before I post this weekend's actuals (doing so tomorrow - don't have sufficient time tonight):

pookpooi posted some of the base numbers, but here are the major highlights:

>La La Land debuted at #1, delivering the third-biggest opening ever for a live-action musical (behind Mamma Mia! and Into the Woods). It's more impressive, though, since it's an original musical with very little known names (in Japan). I'm sure it'll have a nice run (likely earning $25-30 million), but I really wish it had won Best Picture because its potential in Japan would have likely become near blockbuster levels ($40-50 million).

>Your Name. achieves its 27th-consecutive week in the Top 10, breaking Spirited Away's record of 26-consecutive weeks in the Top 10. This was one of those records that most never saw falling. Its weekly grosses are becoming lower and lower though, and it'll need to win big at this upcoming weekend's 40th Japan Academy Prize Ceremony (it needs to win Best Director, Best Animation, and Best Screenplay) or its time in the Top 10 could come to an end in a couple weeks.

There's also "Shin Godzilla" and "In this corner of the world", it's not like that either of them will go empty handed and previously YN lost to both of them in blue ribbon awards, still the odds are with YN and the fanbase is huge all over Japan, surely they doesn't want to disappoint them.

Any early prediction for Moana? Finally another Disney film after a year, I suppose zootopia was released in March last year.

And happy belated b'day Corpse :)

I have high hopes for Moana (over $50 million), although it does have Sing releasing one week after. Both films should do very well, although I think Moana will resonate more with audience members.

Moana will do very well. It doesn't have the phenomenon status that Frozen achieved before release; the (proper) Japanese inspiration that Big Hero 6 enjoyed; nor the critical and commercial success that Zootopia had before being released... However, Walt Disney Animation is on a major win streak right now, so a total of ¥5 billion or more ($40-50 million+) should still be doable.

Sing! is an interesting one. Illumination has become a household name in the market, surprisingly, but I just don't see this one doing significant numbers. It's heavily influenced by Western pop culture, and that's almost never been able to produce a hit film in Japan. The music industry in Japan is dominated by local artists (over 90% of song/album sales are domestic), so I don't think any of the songs in the film, for example, are known. It's very unlikely to match the success of Minions and Pets.

Shin Godzilla earned the most nominations this year and was also met with glowing reviews and incredible audience reception. It's won a lot already at prior award ceremonies, so it's the film to beat this Saturday in each category it's nominated in.

And In This Corner of the World is a major threat in the Best Animation category. It's a film that older members of the Academy, and those with a more "traditional" mindset will probably support.

We'll see. I'm pretty confident Makoto Shinkai will win Best Director for Your Name. (if he does, he'll become the first director to win Best Director for an animated film), but Best Animation, Best Screenplay (which Shinkai is also nominated for), and Best Music are very competitive.
