It's possible, sure, as it coming in lower. I'm predicting it comes in below those marks, hence my estimates, but there's a little room to come in either higher or lower, of course.

As expected, looks like Frozen's 8th weekend record will remain out of reach. Probably one that will never be touched.

Post Re: Japan Box-Office: Demon Slayer Obliterating Record Books
Oricon is releasing their yearly sales data for 2020 today. If anyone here would share them later, I'd appreciate it; and then I'd be able to update the manga charts I began earlier in the year.

Oricon notes that Kimetsu no Yaiba (Demon Slayer) was the first series to ever top both the manga sales charts (taking the top 22 spots) and book sales chart (taking 1st, 2nd, and 5th, combining for 2.64 million copies) in the same year. I'm not as familiar with the book sales chart, but manga sales were very strong this year, even if you don't account for Demon Slayer selling 82,345,447 physical copies this past year by itself (44.4 million more copies than the old yearly record). Looks like the top 10 series' sold either around or over 140 million physical copies for the year.

Demon Slayer's manga sales for this year alone likely broke ¥41/42 billion ($390-400 million+) in earnings, maybe more given the higher pricing for the special editions of volumes 20-22.

I don't agree with the Yo-Kai Watch comparison since it was 90%+ children under 10 (and their parents as a result) that drove that series for 2-3 years before they all grew up, causing the franchise to largely die-off. And even at its peak in 2014/2015, besides maybe toy sales, it didn't achieve any sort of records in any industry it was apart of (besides biggest opening weekend record for a local film, which Demon Slayer doubled).

What I meant was that that generation had grown and now were the main demography for KnY (I know its appeal is way bigger than just its demography), and that same generation, in say 5-10 years would now hype a seinen manga, the problem with that is that seinen manga is meant for adults but if we are being honest KnY is a bit more gory than a lot of the shonen manga now a days, so if there's a seinen manga (Like say Tokyo Ghoul) that becomes popular in 5-10 years maybe it can become a phenomenon (Driven by this same generation that over hyped Yokai Watch, then KnY...) This is just a theory of mine, we will see in the future haha.

It's even more impressive when you take into consideration that the previous record holder, One Piece, had 62 volumes in circulation when it achieved those 38million sales, KnY achieved 82mill with only 22 volumes (Had volume 23 ben released last month it would probably have sold 85mill easily).

BTW this is 2020 oricon:

Post Re: Japan Box-Office: Demon Slayer Obliterating Record Books
I get what you mean now, rija. And, well, Jujustu Kaisen might be an early example that fits your description. It's not going to be another Demon Slayer, obviously, but the fact that it sold near 7 million copies this year (to rank 5th) with an anime adaptation that just started a couple months ago is quite impressive. And I believe its last couple weeks of the year was even hindered by stock issues. I just picked it up a couple weeks ago and am enjoying it so far, though it's a little confusing (3 volumes in). And bookstores and online retailers (Amazon, Right Stuf) in the U.S. are having stock issues for it as well. I have 4 volumes on backorder because they're sold out everywhere right now.

And thank you, and Iscariote, for the figures. I'll update the manga charts tonight/early tomorrow before the box office actuals come in.

5,165,052 - Fullmetal Alchemist (Square Enix/Hiromu Arakawa) [2010]
5,115,373 - The Seven Deadly Sins (Kodansha/Nakaba Suzuki) [2016]

5,047,574 - My Hero Academia (Shueisha/Kohei Horioshi) [2019]
5,030,624 - Haikyuu!! (Shueisha/Haruichi Furudate) [2018]

Note: For all the members/lurkers who don't know much about manga sales or Oricon's charts, they run from the third week of November to the third week of November. This year being from Nov. 18th, 2019 through Nov. 22nd, 2020. And the sales are of PHYSICAL copies sold only, digital not included.

Big year for manga sales. I'll have to do some research, but I feel like this is the biggest year ever, isn't it? It's all due to Demon Slayer, of course, but still mighty impressive because everything else (One Piece aside, since it couldn't get a 4th volume out this year) really pulled their own weight as well. Attack On Titan also slipped a little bit once again and couldn't reach 5 million for a second year in a row, but it was a small decline at least. It's expected to end in 2021, so lets see if its final volume(s) and final season anime adaptation can get it back in the game next year.

But it was also a year of big conclusions. Demon Slayer, Haikyuu!!, and The Promised Neverland all concluded this year.

>Demon Slayer set a new record by a truly absurd margin--a record that is never going to be broken.
>Kingdom enjoyed its second best year, continuing its strong momentum despite being one of the longest currently running series.
>Haikyuu!! and The Promised Neverland both had their second best years, which is a nice way to go out for those series.
>Jujustu Kaisen is a big new entry to this list, having a very impressive year that was boosted late by its anime adaptation. Next Demon Slayer? No, but looks set to become one of the hit series of the future.
>The Quintessential Quintuplets had its best year ever, which is excellent for publisher Kodansha as Attack on Titan has slipped in recent years and is ending next year.
>My Hero Academia also had its second best year, and looks like it'll still be ongoing for a few more years yet. A third movie was just announced for Summer 2021, too.

45-Day Total: ¥27,512,438,050 ($262.3 million) / 20,532,177

Up very slightly versus my estimate. No weekend figures yet, but if I had to make a guess, I'd say the seventh weekend slipped just below ¥1 billion as predicted, and the reason for the higher total is just from a couple weekdays being under-estimated a tad over the week.

¥3,287,561,951 and 2,967,824 admissions away from surpassing Spirited Away now.

Wow, stayed above 1 billion after all :)

What's wrong with them, LPLC? (EDIT: See below)

Those Sat and Sun numbers add up to ¥1.0045 billion. So a sub-3% drop from last weekend.

if you add the figures for Saturday and Sunday it does not give the weekend total of admissions and yen, either the figures for Saturday and Sunday are wrong or the cumulative weekend figures are wrong

No, they're correct. Google translate or other means of translating is incorrect because they place the zeroes in wrong places.

Demon Slayer ends up with 7 consecutive weekends above ¥1 billion (previous record being 3 consecutive weekends). Yet another record that will likely never be broken.

Yes. If you look at them written out in Japanese, zeroes aren't typically written before/after the decimal separator, and translators mess this up as a result. Both Sunday's gross and admissions, as well as the weekend gross, are examples of this happening this week.

I'll have all the numbers updated soon (where it's easier to understand, too).

Ok thanks for the info, I don't speak Japanese at all so I just translated but the translator showed me the wrong numbers
