Super strong, I was sure Japan would love the Zootopia because animation is their genre.

Its weekend even came in above estimates, too. ;) Its fifth weekend comes in 13% above its opening weekend, and is a mere 1% behind its biggest weekend-to-date (its second weekend, which was boosted by Golden Week). It grew week-to-week again as well.

Weekend Actuals will be posted soon.

Zootopia effortlessly achieves a third-consecutive week atop the box office, selling a further 375,137 admissions in its fifth weekend, bringing its five week admissions above 3.5 million. Its fifth weekend gross above comes in 13% higher than its opening weekend, and only trailed its biggest weekend-to-date (its second) by a just 1%! It's also up a remarkable 11% week-to-week, enjoying its third-consecutive week-to-week increase as well.

So, as you can see, even though its been in release for five week now, Disney's latest smash hit continues to be on the rise (no signs yet of slowing down, whatsoever) and is going to dominate the box office until, possibly, July. A conservative projection has become ¥8 billion ($70 million+), but it's likely to go higher than that milestone and could realistically make a play at reaching the uber-blockbuster mark of ¥10 billion ($90 million+). It's looking as a multiplier of possibly 20, or higher, too, which is needless to say, unprecedented for this time of year.

After the Storm misses the Top 5 in its debut weekend, selling 89,510 admissions across 244 screens over the weekend. This is award-winning director Koreeda Hirokazu's lowest debut in years, though it does happen to be a smaller-scale release. And although legs are likely going to be strong, its chances of reaching the ¥1 billion milestone are very slim.

Girls und Panzer: The Movie climbs back into the Top 10 in its twenty-eighth weekend of release thanks to a significant expansion that included numerous premium format showings. It's on track to become the second highest-grossing late-night anime film ever this week, in what's been a spectacular, if... overlong, run.

Mobile Suit Gundam: The Origins III earns another successful Top 10 debut for the series, selling 40,224 admissions on only 15 screens. The fourth, and final, film in the Origins series opens later this year in the Fall.

So Disney is well and truly back! Nothing from them will beat Frozen, but still they are enjoying success in Japan now, which is great to see. Good films deserve to be rewarded.

Post Re: Japan Box Office: Weekend Actuals (Zootopia: Legit Beast
I have a question.

So Pokemon The First Movie made ¥7.54 billion which was $77.8 million according to the numbers you gave last year.

On Box Office Mojo they have the Pokemon movie at making a very similar $77.9 million internationally and worldwide $163 million.

That would fit if that worldwide number was just for US and Japan but there's all other countries as well so it must have made a lot more than what BOM has it at.

Is the $77.9 million the Japanese gross or the overseas gross not including Japan?

It's difficult to say, really. However, I'm willing to bet that BOM has a lower gross than what it actually earned. There are many, many examples of them being inaccurate in regards to international figures.

And the errors mostly come down to the exchange rate. The first Pokemon movie was released in the U.S. a full 16 months after its debut in Japan, so I highly doubt BOM was keeping track of it during its initial release in Japan, so who knows what exchange rate they used?

Zootopia is going to repeat atop the box office once again this weekend; achieving its fourth-consecutive weekend in the #1 position. If its past weekdays, and weekend pre-sales serve as an accurate indicator this week, it does appear the film has begun to cool down just a bit... but only just a bit. Its weekday-to-weekday business was down less than 10%, and its pre-sales for Saturday suggest a sub-20% hold, or possibly a single digit decline as well. It's going to cruise over the blockbuster milestone of ¥5 billion over the weekend, as it will then begin its journey to see how close it can get to the uber-blockbuster mark of ¥10 billion ($90 million).

Wolf Girl and Black Prince will provide the weekend with a decent opener, which may perhaps be the biggest opener of this year's May (if it beats 64: Part 1's ¥257.2 million from earlier this month). Its pre-sales are almost on par with last year's No Longer Heroine, which opened to ¥262.5 million in September.

The film is the latest live-action shojo adaptation, based on the popular manga of the same name 'Wolf Girl and Black Prince', directed by Hiroki Ryuichi and starring Fumi Nikaido and Kento Yamazaki in the lead roles.

The Huntsman: Winter's War is going to disappoint. The first film was a modest success (grossing ¥1.71 billion), but the sequel appears to be in poor shape. Based on its Friday opening (~¥35 million), it's only going to gross around ¥100 million or so over the weekend frame compared to the original's debut of ¥302 million in June 2012.

Zootopia unsurprisingly wins Saturday and is assured to claim a fourth-consecutive week atop the box office in its sixth weekend of release. And even though it's actually going to decrease this weekend, which will make only its second weekend drop since opening, it continues to do crazy numbers this late in its release (its sixth weekend might be less than 10% behind its opening weekend still).

Wolf Girl and Black Prince starts off with a solid first day, and if it follows the same trajectory as other recent live-action shojo manga adaptions, it's going to have a very health Sunday increase. It's still looking at a debut around the ¥250 million mark, which is pretty standard for the shojo (teen romance) genre.

The Huntsman: Winter's War performed poorly, as expected, though it looks like it might be able to earn itself a Top 3 debut (depending on how If Cats Disappeared from the World does tomorrow). It's still on track for ¥100 million or slightly more; down more than 60% compared to the first film's opening four years ago.

Also, with Girls und Panzer: The Movie seeing a substantial decline following its huge expansion last weekend, the #10 spot this weekend is very undecided. Along with it still having a chance to remain in the Top 10 (due to its very high avg. ticket price), Himeano~ru and London Has Fallen both have a decent shot at making the Top 10 and Crayon Shin-chan can't be ruled out either since it'll do well tomorrow.

Would the exchange rate have changed that drastically for the $77.9 million to include the Japanese gross and all the other foreign gross?

On the Box Mojo international page it has release date 1998 and $77.9 million. So I think it either includes Japan and that's it or it coincidentally made the exact same internationally outside of Japan.

I don't think the other movies have the same problem, just this one seems off.

It could very well be that the international total over at BOM is solely from Japan, though they do have two other countries listed, and oddly enough, neither are Japan. It is a weird situation.

Exchange rates can certainly change drastically enough, and in a short amount of time, too, to affect box office figures in significant ways, sometimes in the way of tens of millions of dollars.

Let's use the biggest film of the past 6 months, Star Wars: The Force Awakens, as a hypothetical example. During the course of its run, it earned ~$96 million in Japan by grossing ¥11.58 billion. Now let's say that, theoretically, Disney decided to give it a limited re-release this very weekend and it managed to crack the Top 10 with $350,000 or something. Its USD total would suddenly jump nearly $10 million to ~$105/106 million on BOM due to them using the current exchange rate. And there are actual examples, some on an even larger scale, of this type of scenario happening.

In regards to the first Pokemon movie, there's nearly a 30% difference between the Yen/Dollar rate in Summer 1998 compared to Fall/Winter 1999. If that's taken into consideration when discussing the first Pokemon film, for example, there's a ~$22 million difference there depending on which rate is used.

Excellent once again for Zootopia (only its second weekend decrease so far!); Expected solid showing for Wolf Girl and Black Prince, standard for the genre; Poor debut for The Huntsman: Winter's War; Overall, solid weekend with good/great holds for the majority of holdovers, too.

I'll post the weekend estimates later this evening.

Yeah, it's difficult to determine the actual gross. In general, it's hard to get precise USD figures for films in Japan that were released before 2000.

Yeah, I'll post the Bleach films' grosses later tonight for you. :)

Zootopia retains its hold atop the box office for its fourth-consecutive week, in its sixth weekend of release; exceeding the blockbuster milestone of ¥5 billion. This weekend only marks the second time it's even dropped since opening (its third weekend being the other). It's still on track to likely exceed ¥8 billion ($70 million+), which will give it a multiplier of at least 18!

Wolf Girl and Black Prince earns itself a standard opening weekend for the shojo (teen romance) genre, and since legs are typically good for the genre as well, a gross of ¥1.5-2.0 billion ($15-20 million) is likely.

The Huntsman: Winter's War disappoints, though not unexpectedly. Its Friday performance and weekend pre-sales were indicators that it was in store for a poor debut this weekend. If the estimate holds, it's down a huge 60% from the original film's opening from four years ago. Also, it's not even going to reach the ¥1 billion ($9/10 million) milestone, likely setting for a gross of maybe ¥600 million ($5.5 million) or so.
