So no chance to Civil War to catch-up on Sunday as well. Zootopia is doing amazing numbers as expected.

Nah. It's going to have a third place debut, but that's not unexpected (second was the best it could have done). The only superhero films to open at #1 in Japan have been four/five of the Spider-Man films and both Avenger films. And Civil War's opening will only trail those same films as well among all Marvel/DC opening weekends.

Corpse you know anything about WoM for Civil War. I sense it might be doing good because of that.

Well, reviews and critic scores are strong, but it's very early in a market in Japan to say whether they're having a noticeable impact on its box office performance. If anything, the whole superheros vs superheros angle and the inclusion of Spider-Man is helping it more so.

Alright, so it's clear I'll be too busy with work to provide constant updates through Golden Week as I did over the weekend. However, I'll still post daily estimates (just not the hourly admissions each day - that's too much).

Also, weekend actuals will be posted soon! I was figuring they'd be delayed, but thankfully Monday is the only non-holiday of the entire week, so they're out. All the business that Sunday (discount day) generated drove avg. ticket prices way, way down for the weekend, so estimates were a bit high for everything in terms of gross (admissions were still accurate), though it was still an impressive weekend.

>Detective Conan: The Darkest Nightmare once again retains its position atop the box office, delivering yet another excellent weekend gross in its third week of release. The 20th anniversary release sold a great 490,261 admissions over the weekend frame (down just 6%), bringing its three week admissions above 2.9 million.

The breakout entry in the popular series is well on its way to becoming the highest grossing film in the franchise, and should be able make that claim sometime later this week. It's still on track to earn as much as ¥6 billion ($55 million) or more when all is said and done.

>Zootopia remains in second place, fending off a new Disney release, and was actually the only film to manage a weekend increase. Disney's latest hit film sold 443,249 admissions in its second week of release, up a very impressive 35% over its opening weekend admissions. A second weekend increase was likely, but that percentage is very, very strong.

It'll remain difficult to project where this one may finish its run because it could see a severe decline once Golden Week is over, since it's skewing toward a young audience, but it should at the very least be able to exceed ¥4 billion ($35 million) and could certainly still make a run at the ¥5 billion ($45 million) blockbuster milestone.

>Captain America: Civil War debuts in third place, meaning Japan was the only market that has opened so far where it didn't open at #1. Although, a first place debut was very unlikely, so that news isn't as bad as it seems since its numbers are quite impressive.

The latest entry in the MCU sold a solid 322,943 admissions over the weekend frame across 625 screens. Since opening on Friday, its three day admissions reached 515,131. This opening makes it the seventh biggest opening for a superhero film in the market, trailing only the original Spider-Man trilogy, The Amazing Spider-Man, and the two Avenger films. The opening is also a whopping 226% above that of Captain America: The Winter Soldier.

Overall, while it didn't come in first place, this is a strong start, and if it can match the legs of The Amazing Spider-Man 2 or Iron Man 3 (both previous Golden Week openers that it opened slightly higher than), then a total above ¥2.5 billion is assured with the chance of exceeding ¥3 billion ($25 million) as well.

>Chihayafuru - Part 2 accomplished a rare feat this weekend - opening above the first part of the film! It's very rare for the second half of a film in Japan to open higher than its predecessor that's release 2 months apart, but it did just that by selling 193,226 admissions on 294 screens over the weekend, up 32% compared to the first film.

>Terra Formars was the only disappointment of the weekend. Takashi Miike's live-action adaptation of the popular manga/anime series only sold 128,730 admissions over the weekend frame on 327 screens. Given everything the film had in its favor, despite a mixed reception, it should have managed an opening a lot better than this. As it stands, it'll be in for a struggle to reach the ¥1 billion milestone.

Golden Week 2016 is officially over!

Takeaways:

>Zootopia performed exceptionally well over the past weekend but even moreso over the weekday portion of the holiday frame; even achieving its first 1st place ranking(s) over the past three days. This is good news, though also a sign that it could be in store for significant drops post-Golden Week since it's clearly skewing young (wasn't totally clear the first week of release). However, even if it would see poor/standard drops from here-on-out, it's set itself up to reach at least ¥4 billion, and stands a fair chance of reaching the ¥5 billion ($45 million) blockbuster milestone, too.

>Detective Conan: The Darkest Nightmare continued to play well into the weekday portion of the holiday frame after achieving its third-consecutive weekend atop the box office and became the highest-grossing film in the franchise on either Wednesday or Thursday. The 20th anniversary film will exceed the ¥5 billion ($45 million) blockbuster milestone over the upcoming weekend, and still has its sight on possibly exceeding ¥6 billion ($55 million) as well.

>Captain America: Civil War has had to settle for third place for all but a couple days of its run so far, but is still grossing impressive figures for a superhero film in the market. It should be able to withstand the post-Golden Week decline a bit better than most other films in the Top 10 since it's skewing toward an adult audience, and is likely to finish between ¥2.5-3.0 billion ($23-27 million). Compared to other the Marvel/DC films, it'll only finish behind all five Spider-Man films and the two Avenger films.

>Terra Formars was never able to catch on to take advantage of the holiday period like it was hoping to, and is going to struggle to reach the ¥1 billion milestone. Very, very disappointing run for this film, and it'll become Warner Bros.'s first misstep since focusing their efforts in the market on Japanese releases in 2012.

>The Revenant is a likely candidate to lose significant seating/screens post-Golden Week, but the holiday frame was pretty generous toward it, and it should be able to crawl over the ¥1 billion milestone. Overall, though, a tad disappointing considering how DiCaprio's past films have performed in the market.

The post Golden Week weekend always experiences heavy declines, and based on Saturday pre-sales and morning/afternoon ticket sales, this year will be no different.

Zootopia is looking to capture its first weekend atop the box office, in its third week, and will do so unless Road to High & Low ends up with a very high avg. ticket price.

EXILE Tribe, one of Japan's musical supergroups (a collection of already established acts forming a single group), which consists of some of Japan's biggest acts, launched a multi-media entertainment project ("High & Low") this year that includes a new drama series, a new album album, a tour, a manga, and more.

This project will eventually lead to the release of a movie, High & Low: The Story of S.W.O.R.D on July 16th, but before then, this weekend's Road to High & Low will give fans a taste of this Summer's main event.

A lot of rough drops this weekend, but post-Golden Week considered, these aren't too bad.

>Zootopia claims its first weekend atop the box office over its third weekend in release, and delivered a very nice hold that's slightly better than Cinderella's from last year. It's edging closer and closer to the ¥3 billion milestone and should also exceed the ¥4 billion ($35 million) near the end of May. From there, it begins its mission of reaching the ¥5 billion ($45 million) blockbuster milestone; chances being about 50/50 at the moment.

>Detective Conan: The Darkest Nightmare is finally dethroned after enjoying three-consecutive weeks in first place. The Detective Conan films always drop over 50% over the post Golden Week weekend, so the large decline here isn't surprising (in fact, if estimates hold, it's slightly better than most previous entries). It's either barely below or just above the ¥5 billion blockbuster milestone after this weekend, and having accomplished that achievement and becoming the highest-grossing film in the series, the only thing left for it to do now is to add more to it's incredible total as it aims for ¥6 billion ($55 million).

>Captain America: Civil War also experiences a rough second weekend drop, however, given the frontloaded nature of superhero films in the market and with it coming off of Golden Week, a decline around 50% is actually quite good. It remains on course to exceed the ¥2.5 billion milestone, and while I doubt it'll have the legs required to reach the ¥3 billion mark, as long as it can reach ¥2.58 billion (beating Iron Man 3), it'll claim the title of highest-grossing non-Spider-Man/Avengers superhero film.

>64: Part 1 managed to surprise a bit over the weekend, coming in much higher than its pre-sales indicated on Friday. This was largely due to how strongly its walk-up business was in the morning/afternoon hours, suggesting it has significant senior appeal. The police drama starring Koichi Sato looks to have comfortably debuted above ¥200 million, unless its senior audience drove its avg. ticket price down too much, so it's likely to become another ¥1 billion earner this year.

>Road to High & Low... I really misread this one on Friday when I posted the weekend forecast. Its pre-sales represented a very high percentage of its weekend admissions, and I didn't check beforehand to notice it had a limited number of showtimes as well. Still, an opening above ¥100 million on just 141 screens for a preview of the actual film that'll open on July 16th is still impressive.

>Terra Formars pretty much collapsed. Its admissions were down nearly 70%, and with a weekend drop around the 60% mark (very, very rare in Japan), it'll be losing seating/screens very, very fast. It's unlikely to reach the ¥1 billion milestone now as well, making this film a bomb for Warner Bros..
