Detective Conan and Captain America overtook Zootopia once the evening/night showings began and with only ~2 hours of showtimes remaining, it's still not certain which of them will come out on top today, though Conan is the slight favorite now.

Unfortunately, I won't be around for the last update since I work on Fridays, but I'll post the final update along with Friday estimates later today.

And that's it. A very close race for the top spot, and the first day of Golden Week probably saw two different winners.

Detective Conan managed to hang onto its #1 position once again, in terms of admissions, but it may have slipped to second place in terms of gross since Captain America's avg. ticket price will be notably higher. Weekday actuals are very rarely reported, so we'll probably never know for sure if there were split winners today, but I'll provide some Friday estimates after this post.

And overall, a very strong start to the Golden Week holiday period.

Terra Formars is the only real disappointment among the Top 10. Its pre-sales represented an unhealthy amount of its ticket sales, and its sales throughout the day were lackluster. The good news is that it has most of Golden Week left, so plenty chances of recovering, but based on Saturday's pre-sales... it's not looking likely.

Hey Corpse,

What is your take on these friday to saturday drops ? The Civil War drop in particular (nearly 55%) looks pretty ugly to me.

Any weekend forecast coming up ?

I wouldn't worry much about the Fri-Sat drops. They're all expected since Friday was Showa Day and the start of Golden Week (the drops will look worse for the openers because this, too). Saturday will probably end up being the weakest day of Golden Week this year.

I'm going to skip the forecast this weekend since I'll be updating practically all weekend (and into next week) on an hourly basis in the evenings/mornings.

I know about the Fri-Sat drops but CA3's day to day drop was/is pretty ugly compared to Zootopia and Conan's, that's why I asked.

Ok. That's even better. Thanks for answering. :mer:

Captain America should improve upon its Sat. drop as the day progresses. Its Satuday pre-sales were ahead of Detective Conan and Zootopia prior to the start of day, so there's a lot of ticket sales still to come in since it's trailing so much this morning.

Only one update to go with only ~2 hours of showtimes remaining for the day.

Detective Conan has once again managed to overtake Zootopia in the evening/night and is going to win its 15th consecutive day at the box office, at least in terms of admissions (Captain America may have beaten it yesterday in terms of gross). It won't have to worry about losing the day in gross, however, since today its admissions are comfortably higher than Captain America's.

Terra Formars continues to be the weak link among the Top 10 and has even fallen behind I Am a Hero in its second weekend... Not good, at all, and if it doesn't recover in the next day or two, then it might be labeled a bomb (or at least a big disappointment).

I'll have Saturday estimates posted after the final admission update in a couple hours.

Post Re: Japan Box Office: Golden Week - 2016 (Fri. Estimates)
Before I post Saturday's final update and estimates, here's how Captain America: Civil War compared to the biggest openings of the most recent superhero films on Saturday:

45% behind Avengers: Age of Ultron
17% ahead of The Amazing Spider-Man 2
12% ahead of Batman vs Superman: Dawn of Justice

Using these three comparisons, we get an early weekend range of ~¥425-475 million for Captain America: Civil War. This range also puts it a bit higher than Iron Man 3 (¥414 million), but also a little below The Amazing Spider-Man (¥580 million) and The Avengers (¥500 million).

And needless to say, the opening will be above the previous Captain America films by enormous margins (maybe over 500% higher than the first film; and over 200% higher than the second). The solo MCU films, Iron Man 3 aside, have all be big disappointments in the market.

It's in pretty good company right now. However, we are in the midst of a holiday week and with Sunday being the 1st (discount day nationwide will fuel ticket sales, but lower avg. ticket prices), its number could change drastically once tomorrow is taken into consideration.

Post Re: Japan Box Office: Golden Week - 2016 (Sat. Estimates)
After briefly checking various theaters this morning, it's clear that Sunday is going to be an enormous day at the box office. Not only will Sunday greatly outdo Saturday's results, but it may also outpace Friday (admissions).

Most films, those ranking in the Top 10 and even outside, are reaching 50%+ capacity for nearly all their showtimes all the way to at least 5PM on pre-sales alone at many, many locations (and it's only 9:30AM right now).

Sunday's first ticket sales will be posted in ~30 minutes.

Well, as you can see (by comparing to Saturday a few posts up), Sunday is currently outpacing Saturday by over 100% or better across the board so far. It's also outpacing Friday by quite a significant margin as well. It's going to be a monstrous day.
