This must have been asked a hundred times >.< How many more weeks will Demon Slayer be shown? (Since I can remember Spirited Away able to hold records on 230+day) I'm not sure if I computed it right but for DS to reach 45B Yen the revenue, it needs at least 35 Million admissions. But could DS be able to do another 10 Million? I'm not sure until when DS will be shown and with the January shows getting more screens, this might not be possible. But who knows, the phenomenal run of DS is incomparable

Schools are out and anyone who would have the day off during a national holiday is on holiday.

Regarding how many weeks Demon Slayer will be #1 and how many weeks it'll be in theaters, just have to wait and see. Gintama may dethrone it next weekend, but if not, then Evangelion will on January 23rd. So it's going to be either 12 or 14 weeks at #1. And it'll be in theaters for many more months. Most films play for 4-6 months anyway, and leggy films, especially something like Demon Slayer that has broken the all-time record, will be playing for far longer than that.

And no one knows how much more it'll gross. You can attempt projections, but they'll change over time, so I personally wouldn't try to project a run that can still be ongoing for another half year or more.

Yes it's true that the Demon Slayer screening can last several more months, but Corpse, we agree that anyway from the end of January / beginning of February Demon Slayer will not gain much (almost nothing) no ?

And Corpse if it's not too intrusive, are you from the east or the west of the united states ?

I don't see why not. We don't know how it's going to hold post-holidays, there are no Hollywood films on the horizon, and its status at the #1 film ever will continue to peak some interest. And we don't know if Aniplex/ufotable have any other events for it in theaters, nor what the impact, if any, will be when the future of the animated series is revealed in February.

Thinking it won't earn hardly anything after a mere four more weeks in release is just speculation.

It's not just going to stop, or barely earn anything else, after another month. I guess it depends on someone's definition of "significant", but it'll still add a significant amount to its total all the way through spring and likely into the summer months. Social phenomenon films like this (and this is the biggest in Japan's entire history) go on, and on, and on for half a year at a minimum before they even enter limited release.

No.

We haven!t seen Demon Slayer have a single week yet at a medium size, nor have we seen it have two normal weeks in a row.

Maybe it will drop off fast and make less than 1B post Jan. But maybe it will hold great and make several B post Jan. The data just isn’t there to rule out either yet.

It's going to have a very long run. 2/3 months isn't a particularly long time for the market.

Once we reach mid/late-January, assuming it gets on a "normal" track of regular holds and such around then, we can probably make a longer-term projection of a rough final total. Where it stands now, a total of ¥40 billion ($375 million+) is practically locked up, but we can't really say how much higher it'll go from there without having some numbers from it being on a normal track first.

Corpse I'm not pessimistic or anything but I'll explain why I think from February Demon Slayer will earn virtually nothing. In fact if I think it is because I think that Demon Slayer is not a film like Frozen or Your Name, these films have been able to maintain themselves or even see increases week after week. Demon Slayer is obviously a phenomenon film but without the gifts the film would surely have experienced normal drops (20%-25% every week), and now there are no more gifts and the holidays are almost over, so from at the end of January Demon Slayer will not manage to maintain itself or to experience increases like Your Name or Frozen, and will start to fall which is normal, DS will perhaps manage to earn another ¥500mn-¥1Bn from February. For it to hit ¥40Bn (¥45bn is impossible sorry Jack Sparrow) is obviously possible but I won't bet on it, and even if he hits that mark, Demon Slayer won't win much from there.

Personally my goal is for it to reach ¥38Bn ($365M) and 28 million admissions, but honestly even that goal I'm not sure it will reach, however ¥36Bn-¥37Bn seems locked but no more. I am not pessimistic I repeat, I am just saying what I think, but maybe I am wrong and I hope I am wrong.

Last week my goal is for DS to reach ¥700.3mn and it has reached ¥907.6mn, this weekend my goal is ¥575mn ($5.6M), we'll see if DS manages to reach this goal (it looks good) but in any case the record Frozen's 12th weekend seems difficult now.

Note: At 5 p.m. Saturday is a bit lower than Friday and 45% drop from last Saturday I would say 135k-140k today at the usual locations

You have to understand that in the market we see good legs once the movie settles down. Initially the movies do 20%-25% drop but they also see increases from time to time and that would be due to external factors. 10x-11x is usually the average range for a movie which DS has done so far. There is also no guarantee that we will not see anymore giveaways and gifts over the weekend. The only thing that we are certain is that there is still a HUGE demand for this movie in the market. Movies like these stay in Top 5 for a VERY LONG time, possibly Corpse should start that list now for comparison because they have sub-15% to sub-10% drops as they are not loosing screens. The giveaways have for now made sure that the movie has record breaking weekend numbers but in future even with a minimal number giveaways/gifts it would easily stay afloat in Top 5 and that would happen by itself.

Like I said before, Demon Slayer hasn’t really spent any weeks so far in a normal environment. They have all been unreasonably large and/or part of the giveaway seesaw. And, respectfully, you have basically been nothing but too pessimistic about DS’s run for the entire past two months, so it!s very funny to see you say “I am not pessimistic I repeat” with seemingly no historical awareness.

It’s probably going to do 40-45 (yeah, naturally the goal Jack chose as a joke some months ago probably won’t happen but it might not be that far either). So just sit back, listen to the experts, and enjoy the ride!

About 141k for sat. Is it fair to assume Sunday will be slightly stronger, considering that has been the trend in "normal" non-giveaway Sundays and the extended vacation should help with the evening showings?

As for the movie itself, I agree that 40bln seems perfectly reasonable at this point. I see nothing that would suggest otherwise as of now.

The issue here has always been perception and precedent. Everyone, or most, have always been trying to perceive this film's performance (and the series itself) on the same scale as everything else, when that's proven wrong since day-one. Everyone, or most, have always been trying to compare its numbers to those of everything else, when that's also proven wrong since day-one.

This thing broke the 17-year-old opening weekend record (which even included previews) over all three of its first three weekends by massive margins, in both revenue and admissions, with almost no inflation to speak of. There's no precedent for anything even close to this.

This thing broke the 19-year-old all-time highest grossing film record in both revenue and admissions in a record number of time with almost no inflation to speak of. There's no precedent for anything even close to this.

This thing is no Your Name. or Frozen, or Spirited Away. It's bigger, much, much bigger. Those films are like normal films in comparison to the phenomenon that Demon Slayer is. Demon Slayer has created an all new category that only itself resides in.

And thinking it may only do ¥1.5/2 billion more after a ¥600 million+ (predicted) weekend is very unusual. Even Yo-Kai Watch 2, a very frontloaded film, earned almost ¥2 billion more with a much lower New Year weekend. It will probably earn the majority of that in under 10 days after this Sunday.

The number one point I've tried to get across for almost 3 months now is to stop trying to project this film weeks out based on perception and precedent, because it's beyond those, and it's not going to work.

Jack Sparrow is absolutely what I hope for Demon Slayer.

WandaLegion, who are you? I am not and I have never been a pessimist, sometimes I overestimate and sometimes I underestimate, it's normal but I always tried to be realistic when trying to analyze the data we had. And I listen to the experts as you say, Charlie Jat thinks of a final around ¥38Bn-¥39Bn maximum and I agree with him, sorry to have an opinion and to share it on the forum, I do not don't know why you're trying to knock me out like that, I'm just saying what I think and I think I have the right. DON'T SHOOT, I AM NOT ARMED. lmao.

JustLurking, I think Sunday will be weaker than Saturday, despite it's a weekend without gifts, as predicted by the pre-sales. I tried to see how the movies behaved on the 1st weekend of January in 2015 (last year or new year fell on a Friday), and most like Star Wars 7 had a lower Sunday than Saturday, so I guess It will be the same this year.

Corpse, I agree with you it's useless to plan something in Japan in the first weeks of the film's release, but as you told me last year with Frozen 2, after a certain number weeks, when a film has already made the majority of its box office, it is possible and easier to predict something. I think more that Demon Slayer will do something like ¥3Bn-¥4bn (not ¥1.5/2 Bn) more after a ¥600 million + weekend, but it may be more or less. We'll see that in the next few weeks.

Is 2020 the biggest year of this thread (in terms of posts and views)? That'd be quite the irony heh. @Corpse, I remember you compiling such statistics for previous years, will you do one this time around as well?

Yes, it's by far the busiest year this thread has ever seen (and it's been the busiest, and by far the most viewed, for years now). I'll post this data later today.

Also, everyone... all we're doing now is debating, with little to no knowledge (precedent) to back the arguments up, on just how much MORE Demon Slayer is going to gross. I know predicting the box office is what we do, so feel free to do so of course, but just keep in mind that it's all 100% (not 99%, but 100%) speculation in this particular case. As mentioned, there's nothing that's been on this scale before, and there's no precedent to fall back on.

Truth be told, a final total isn't going to be known for many, many months, so I'd refrain from trying to pinpoint an exact finish for some time still. ¥20 billion was in "question" two months ago. ¥30 billion was in question one month ago. Becoming the new #1 film of all time was in question a few weeks ago. Now it's just questioning how much MORE. Each step of the way, we've just had to wait and see, and we need to continue to do that.

I don't try to predict constantly, I just like trying to see how far a movie can go, even more with Demon Slayer, that's what I'm here for, to follow Demon Slayer's crazy run for weeks after weeks. And I enjoy the run, don't worry about it, I've been on this forum for almost 3 months every day and if I didn't like it I'll be gone already.
