Post Re: Japan Box-Office: January Release Schedule
I think we just need to let the day play out today.

It was below Thursday in the morning from some theaters opening later (only day of the year theaters open late) and just audiences recovering from New Year's Eve in general, but in the past hour or two, everything's begun to see major increases. The day is definitely going to finish on a strong note.

The three younger-skewing films (Pokemon, Doraemon, and Kamen Rider) were rather unfortunate today though since the vast majority (75-90%) of their showings are scheduled in the morning/afternoon. They'll bounce back over the weekend.

Ok so Friday < Tuesday < Wednesday ? Obviously 130k isn't low or anything, but I was expecting this Friday to be the biggest day of the week and I don't understand why it isn't. Maybe people are busy today and don't have time to go to the movies. Anyway happy new year everyone !

It is not less, just the percentage of seats is higher for some reason, might be a mistake though.

Happy New Year everyone...

I just published the 1961 charts and the Japanese movie "Ningen no jôken" (The Human Condition) had 1,266,000 admissions sixty years ago in Germany...

Happy New Year, everyone.

As for Friday, it's a great example of why you shouldn't be trying to predict ahead during a holiday week. This New Year is much different than any past New Year, so it probably had some impact on the box office as well (more people perhaps staying home versus going out to crowded areas). Friday was still very good (except for the younger-skewing films which were hindered by theaters opening later), but a little lower than expected. However, this is also just the second time since 2015 that New Year landed on a Friday, so that was the only precedent to look back on (and this year's releases are a lot different than 2015's releases).

For this New Year Weekend (01/02-03), older-skewing films will perform better than the younger-skewing films. Adult audiences had to work up to New Year, so they tend to come out big over this weekend (the first two days after New Year), resulting in most older-skewing films increasing. Younger-skewing films can also increase, they're just more unlikely to do so since they've received the bulk of the holiday period benefit already.

But again, this is an unprecedented year, and making predictions isn't the way to do things right now. Everyone won't need to over-crowed the trains and buses on Monday to get back to work/school this year due to the extended break, so Sunday evening could be strong for example. On the other hand, COVID cases have been rising and are nearing the level where more people could be taking precautions, which may include not going to the cinema (which requires taking crowded trains and buses for most). Just gotta see how the weekend plays out.
