Post Re: Japan Box-Office: Demon Slayer Obliterating Record Books
Mid/late-December has quite a few wide releases, some notable ones too, a mix of films that were originally scheduled there plus those that got delayed back in the Summer. But in terms of competition, I don't think so. It's pretty rare for films in Japan to be competing over the same audience. Most of them have specific demographics that turn up with little overlap to worry about. And holiday periods allow more than enough room for many films to thrive together.

Seating and screens will be somewhat competitive though, but with very few Hollywood releases on the schedule, it'll be easier to manage than a typical end of year/New Year schedule. I'm not expecting anything to dethrone Demon Slayer from #1 though until Evangelion Jan. 23rd.

I'll post the December release schedule tomorrow.

I don't know where to post this kind of things (maybe in mal or something), but I've watched the movie and...
idk what to say
The animation is on par with Heaven's Feel (sasuga ufotable)
And the train fight scenes alone are actually FAR better than episode 19. And the [REDACTED] vs. Rengoku fight is just so good that it overshadowed the whole train fight.

And for those who want to watch it, I recommend seeing Rengoku as a mentor character, not a character that's supposed to develop.
That's because as a character, Rengoku is already fully developed. He didn't need to change. He's the type of person that changes everyone around him.

On a final note, I cried in this movie. Like, there's only three shounen anime that made me cried. Gintama, One Piece, and now KnY.

I'll happily wait for the time that KnY toppled the number 1 position.

Tuesday is quite strong, I guess the combination of going back to 100% and discounted tickets did really good for it.

Indeed. I think we'll need to see how further weekdays behave to get an idea of whether or not going back to 100% capacity on them has had a positive impact, but the discount day, even though it's a Tuesday, most certainly did.

I was expecting a "normal", but strong 10-20% increase versus last Tuesday, but it jumped over 50%. The entire box office performed exceptionally well, too. You likely know, but as a reminder for everyone, discount days lowers the average ticket price significantly, so a 50% increase in admissions would be more like a 30/40% increase in revenue. Still very impressive, obviously, but just a reminder.

Full-scale lockdowns, unless the virus has truly gotten past the point of control, don't have to be necessary. From my perspective (and supported data/results from most of East Asia), as long as enough of people (90%) are wearing face-masks (correctly) and practicing basic sanitary measures, theaters are very safe. Many places are pretty safe if basic guidelines are followed. I understand targeting restaurants and bars and such with restrictions and potential lockdowns, but not much else is needed if everyone is doing their part. If half of a country's population puts their own self-interests or ideology above that of others, well, it's not going to work very well.

But COVID talk aside...

Japan also benefits from producing so many films themselves. I haven't checked the stats in some time, but I believe Japan is only second in number of films released behind India. And local films have accounted for ~60% of the box office every year since 2008, so theaters and the box office in the country are better suited to handle things in the absence of Hollywood releases.

Post Re: Japan Box-Office: Demon Slayer Obliterating Record Books
A really very strong Tuesday I expected more of something around $1.1M, it promises very strong weekdays, How to explain that ?

Now it is almost certain that Demon Slayer will hit ¥28Bn on Thursday for its 49th day and 21 million admissions on Friday for its 50th day. @Corpse, does Demon Slayer have a chance to hit ¥29Bn by the end of the weekend or is it going to be complicated ?

Post Re: Japan Box-Office: Demon Slayer Obliterating Record Books
It's because Tuesday was a discount day. It depends on the film, but generally weekday discount days result in admissions being on par with or up some (~10/20% or so) from last week. And while some films did see the typically good 10/20% increases or so, some others really took advantage of the day and got up to 50-100%. It's uncommon for films to enjoy increases that high, but it has happened before. Last Tuesday was coming off of a holiday Monday, too, so it was probably a bit deflated last week, which helped the increases coming in higher this Tuesday.

I wouldn't take this to be a sign of abnormally strong weekdays ahead though, if anything, the opposite is more likely to happen. An inflated weekday can lead to other weekdays being deflated to balance itself out a bit. We'll see. There's no way of knowing until it happens.

There's a chance it could reach ¥29 billion on Sunday, but I wouldn't bet on it.

VERY good looking December on paper. No major Hollywood film(s) this year, but the month is packed and has several notable releases. It'll be the strongest month of 2020.

Very interesting December indeed!

Hey Corpse, the figures for these "4D/MX4D re-releases" for the Evangelion films will be added to their original runs or is something apart?
Anyhow, I hope they perform well, very well

Likely counted separately. There isn't any official rules regarding re-release figures to my knowledge, but they've always been reported as separate grosses in the past, and no official websites have added re-release figures to a film's original earnings. So based on this, one can presume that re-release earnings are separate earnings.

But like I said, there's no official rule for this to my knowledge, and some Hollywood re-releases back in the early Summer were having them included in their original totals. It wasn't very much at all, so I don't know if there's a limit on what can be included?

And note that for the re-releases of the three Rebuild Evangelion films this month, they're all one-week only. They're being advertised as 4D/MX4D re-releases, but they're also listed for standard showings too. Overall, 291 theaters, 82 of which are 4D locations. It's a marketing strategy (that also earns money) to hype the fanbase for the fourth, and final film coming out on January 23rd.

I remember Evangelion pulling big numbers last time also because it was an exclusive 2-week release. Could it surprise and overtake DS this weekend?

Nevermind: These are re-releases

I don't think so. I'm sure they'll do fine since the fanbase is large, but more importantly they've shown themselves time and time again to be very loyal. But besides 3.0, the first two would need to open well above their original debuts, which I can't see a re-release doing, to beat Demon Slayer.

Their performances will be a good gauge on what could happen with the release of the final film, after being pushed back and delayed for 8 YEARS, in January though.

Despite Monday likely being slightly boosted from weekend giveaway spillover, and a very boosted Tuesday due to Discount Day, Wednesday still only dropped 19/20% versus last week. Very, very good.

Very good indeed.
So will KnY actually surpass at least 29b next week and go to the 29.5 or 30b territory? Or will it will go beyond that?

While I slightly hope that KnY will surpass SA next week, I think that 29b is a safe assumption for next week (or will there be another giveaway next weekend that I just forgot?)

Very strong week. Could it be that the movie is stabilizing now? I know that's a huge mark to start settling down for a movie that has made so much but a few Uber-blockbusters have stabilized around the same numbers and KnY is still dropping while the comparable movies saw a few weekend increases by now in their run.

I don't think it can stabilize due to special circumstances surrounding its release. The weekdays have more or less stabilized, perhaps, but the weekends are going to remain on a see-saw for quite awhile due to giveaways every other week through Dec. 26th, and then it enters New Year. So... it won't have any "normal" weekends until mid-January.

Here's a rough template of how the weekends will probably behave, more or less:

Dec. 05-06 = Likely a 25/30% drop or so.
Dec. 12-13 = Likely a single-digit drop or potential increase. (Giveaway)
Dec. 19-20 = Likely a 25/30% drop or so.
Dec. 26-27 = Likely a single-digit drop or potential increase. (Giveaway)
Jan. 02-03 = Likely a single-digit drop or potential increase. (New Year Weekend, Holiday Monday)
Jan. 09-10 = Likely a single-digit drop or small decrease. (Holiday Monday Weekend)
Jan. 16-17 = Likely a 25/30% drop or so.

Looks reasonable, ymblcza. I think it'll break ¥30 billion after next Sunday (Dec. 13th) or just a couple days later.

I also think that when it breaks ¥30 billion, there'll be a bit of a rush factor among some fans and even the general public once it reaches the news outlets to check it out to push it past Spirited Away before Christmas, possibly as early as Dec. 20th.
