Post Re: Japan Box Office: Weekend Forecast (05/26-27)
Awesome, thanks. I'll post an updated (presumably final) international results for it in the coming days.

I'm also going to post the Weekend Actuals and Chart Updates here in a bit. Wasn't a great weekend for me, quite ill and still recovering.

>Detective Conan: Zero the Enforcer claims its sixth-non-consecutive weekend atop the box-office in revenue, and its seventh-consecutive weekend at #1 in admissions. It surpassed Star Wars: The Last Jedi over the weekend to become the highest-grossing film of 2018. Besides not setting an opening day record for the franchise (due to being the first to open on a Friday), the twenty-second film in the series has broken literally every other record in the franchise, right down to every single daily since day 2.

>Peter Rabbit held quite well, and has set itself up for a likely total above the ¥1 billion (~$10 million) milestone.

>What a Wonderful Family! 3 settles for a third place start, debuting in third place to 112,000 admissions across 336 screens (and 153,000 since opening on Friday). This is 4% below its predecessor.

>After the Rain comes in fourth place, selling 85,876 admissions over the weekend frame on 301 screens (and 116,266 since opening on Friday). Obviously nothing exciting, but any opening above ¥100 million this time of year is usually seen as "solid".

>Avengers: Infinity War is holding on decently, and will surpass The Avengers next weekend to become the highest-grossing, non-Spider-Man, Marvel/DC film in the market.

>My Friend "A" hasn't had its actual for the weekend frame released yet, but it ranked 5th in admissions over the weekend. And since its 3-day total has been released, I'm projecting it'll come in 6th place in revenue for the weekend. I'll update when its weekend figure is released.

>Rampage basically bombed last weekend, and its second weekend drop is pretty alarming. It's barely going to finish above ¥500 million (probably shy of $5 million).

>Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion - Ch. III debuted in 9th place over the weekend in admissions, but its weekend gross hasn't been released yet -- not surprising given its a limited release from Showgate. I'll update when (or if) its number is released.

EDIT: All prior estimates have been updated.

repost as I think it got lost in the post last week :funny:

Yes, I have this list, but it's a year or two outdated, I believe (if there's any weekend of the past 2 years to add to it, of course). I'll update it later this week.

Will it beat "Stand by me Doraemon" ? That would make it the highest animated domestic franchise movie.

So it ranks 23rd for its year, just behind Monster Hunt, but ahead of Star Trek Beyond and The Legend of Tarzan.

I don't think it'll get there. However, Stand By Me, Doraemon, while obviously a 'Doraemon' film, was a special release as you probably know, and isn't included in the Doraemon chronological.

At the very least, you can say Detective Conan: Zero the Enforcer will become the highest-grossing 2D franchise animated film. It's pretty crazy that Detective Conan has grown so considerably in the past few years that it's a likely contender to top the year at the box-office. And since it's an annual film franchise, it could be a #1 yearly contender at the box-office for most years going forward as well.

Weekend Forecast (06/02-03)
01 (---) ¥325,000,000 ($3.0 million), 0, ¥475,000,000 ($4.4 million), Deadpool 2 (Fox) NEW
02 (---) ¥140,000,000 ($1.3 million), 0, ¥180,000,000 ($1.7 million), 50 First Kisses (Sony) NEW
03 (01) ¥132,000,000 ($1.2 million), -27%, ¥7,875,000,000 ($72.1 million), Detective Conan: Zero the Enforcer (Toho) WK8
04 (02) ¥116,000,000 ($1.1 million), -22%, ¥800,000,000 ($7.3 million), Peter Rabbit (Sony) WK3
05 (---) ¥90,000,000 ($825,000), 0, ¥120,000,000 ($1.1 million), Over Drive (Toho) NEW
06 (03) ¥79,000,000 ($725,000), -37%, ¥475,000,000 ($4.4 million), What a Wonderful Family! 3 (Shochiku) WK2
07 (04) ¥78,000,000 ($715,000), -35%, ¥375,000,000 ($3.4 million), After the Rain (Toho) WK2
08 (06) ¥62,000,000 ($570,000), -18%, ¥250,000,000 ($2.2 million), My Friend "A" (Gaga) WK2
09 (05) ¥41,000,000 ($375,000), -50%, ¥3,650,000,000 ($33.3 million), Avengers: Infinity War (Disney) WK6
10 (07) ¥33,000,000 ($305,000), -54%, ¥450,000,000 ($4.1 million), Rampage (Warner Bros.) WK3

>Deadpool 2 is going to be a bright spot in an upcoming dump of new releases in June. Based on pre-sales, it should also have a healthy retention versus its predecessors' debut, likely dropping less than 20%, if not 15%.

>50 First Kisses, a Japanese remake of 2004's 50 First Dates, is going to benefit from the lack of teen/young female-oriented films in recent weeks (or months, really), and should deliver a decent debut for this time of year. It's also possible this one could develop some strong legs, since this genre typically does and this demo is very under-served right now.

>Detective Conan: Zero the Enforcer will finally be dethroned in its eighth-weekend of release. It has been holding very well over the weekdays despite being past the play-cycle of most entries in the franchise, and it appears to deliver another good hold this weekend as well. It will have broken the franchise record by nearly ¥1 billion after Sunday, and have exceeded a 6 multiplier, which is typically very difficult for this series. It's going to comfortably to exceed the ¥8 billion next weekend, and I believe it's very likely to end up with the yearly crown.

>Over Drive is a bomb, and now I'm questioning why I even considered it a potential contender in dethroning Detective Conan. It'll be lucky to debut in the Top 5.

>Avengers: Infinity War is going to experience a severe decline in its sixth-weekend, and drop near the bottom of the Top 10; however, it will surpass The Avengers over the weekend to become the highest-grossing, non-Spider-Man, Marvel/DC film in the market.

Avengers made 45m USD. So you mean in local currency?

¥3 billion+

July: 6 Months (5 in the Top 10)
August: 4 Months
December: 2 Months
April: 2 Months
May: 1 Month

Thank you so much! That's very interesting that the top weekends aren't that far from each other. I especially like the fact that Spirited Away is on here 3 times!

Another interesting point, the top is roughly $32m at today's ER, that's about 1/10 of the U.S., yet the really big grossers in Japan are only 1/4 of the top in U.S. which shows just how leggy Japan really is, that no weekend is greater than $35m collectively, yet there are several films over $100m total!

Fascinating stuff

Since the most recent on this list was Beauty and the Beast, do you see any weekends joining the list this year?

Correct. The average ticket price in Japan went largely unchanged from the late 1980s until 2014, nearly a 30 year time-frame, so it's easy, fair, and accurate to compare grosses in JPY (Yen) for films today versus 30 years ago in the market without having to consider adjusting any figures.

Ticket prices went up nationwide for the first time in decades in April 2014 (by ¥100, or roughly 7%), and now with various ways to see a film (premium formats), the yearly average ticket price has finally begun to gradually creep upward. I do mean gradually, too, since 2017's average ticket price was still only 7% higher than 2007's, just 4% higher than 1997, and 16% higher than 1987.

Since the exchange rates change so frequently, sometimes drastically between years, comparing USD totals isn't really representative when comparing performances.

Maybe one of the early weekends in August. Mid-July to mid-August is always the strongest 4-6 week period for the box-office (no surprise that 10 of the biggest 15 weekends fall in this frame), and while July is a bit empty in terms of number of releases compared to most prior years, early August is very crowded this year with several big films.

The first weekend of August (08/04-05) is going to have:

Incredibles 2 (NEW)
Mission: Impossible - Fallout (NEW)
My Hero Academia the Movie: The Two Heroes (NEW)
Kamen Rider Build: The Movie (NEW)
Code Blue: The Movie (Week 2)
Bleach (Week 3)
Mirai of the Future (Week 3)
Pokemon: Everyone's Story (Week 4)
Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom (Week 4)

Not accounting for a tenth film, I can see just the nine above hitting ¥3 billion.

Then, the following weekend (08/11-12) kicks off the beginning of Obon Festival, and will see Ocean's 8 debut. This weekend is often very good for holdovers, and films that skew younger can sometimes increase, so it could beat the first weekend of August. Perhaps both can do ¥3 billion+.

The success of these two weekends will probably be determined by Mirai of the Future and whether or not it can break out, and on how well Jurassic World 2 retains the original's audience. There are very, very few weekends among the biggest ever that rely solely on a single film seeing a huge debut -- it's a collective effort from the entire Top 10.

Note: That isn't my predicted weekend ranking for the first weekend of August -- it's just the biggest films that'll be in the Top 10 that weekend and their week in release.

Interesting that the double whammy of SW7 and YKW2 is only good enough for No. 13...

Yeah, I remember ahead of the weekend that it appeared likely to challenge the Biggest Top 10 Weekend record, but both films ultimately debuted slightly less than expected, and the rest of the Top 10 simply dropped too much.

That weekend still made history by having two films open above ¥1 billion on the same weekend for the first time, and it hasn't happened since. I said back then that I don't think this will ever happen again, and while it's probably 99%+ true, never say never.

Mr. Wade Wilson apparently made his debut in Japan at $5.5 million.

Seems a bit high to me, plus that's the 3-day total instead of the opening weekend.

I'll post Weekend Estimates here soon, but I'm estimating $3.1/3.2 million over the weekend, and a 3-day total of $4.8/4.9 million.

>Deadpool 2 enjoys a good debut atop the box-office, and came reasonably close to matching its predecessors' debut. I'm estimating it came within 10% of the original film over the weekend frame. The first film barely reached the ¥2 billion ($20 million) milestone, so this one will probably fall just shy of that mark. When a Marvel/DC film is released in the market, consider a debut above ¥300 million to be impressive unless it's a Spider-Man or Avengers film -- they perform better..

>50 First Kisses, a Japanese remake of 2004's 50 First Dates, didn't perform quite as well as I was expecting, and barely delivered a "decent" opening (decent for June). I anticipated that it'd be capable of bringing the under-served teen/young female audience that hasn't had much to see for weeks/months, but apparently not.

>Detective Conan: Zero the Enforcer falls to second place, finally being dethroned in its eighth-weekend of release. As of this weekend, it'll have broken the franchise record by nearly ¥1 billion, and will have exceeded a 6 multiplier, which is typically very difficult for this series. It's going to comfortably to exceed the ¥8 billion next weekend, and I believe it's very likely to end up with the yearly crown.

>Over Drive is a bomb and unless it attracted a significant adult (25-50) audience, then it will likely miss the Top 10 in its debut.

>Avengers: Infinity War collapsed in its sixth-weekend of release, but not before surpassing The Avengers over the weekend to become the highest-grossing, non-Spider-Man, Marvel/DC film in the market.
