Thanks for the multiplier chart Corpse.
Marvel movies are unable to get good multipliers even in Japan.

Fate really did very well this time, maybe the Japanese are finally warming up to the series.

Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales premiered in Japan yesterday. Sharing the stage in Tokyo alongside stars Johnny Depp, Brenton Thwaites, and Kaya Scodelario were the Japanese voice cast of Kuriyama Chiaki (who many here would know from Kill Bill Vol. 1 and Battle Royale) and Nakagawa Taishi .

The premiere for the fifth film in the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise marks the fourteenth premiere that Johnny Depp has attended in Japan.

And as usual when Johnny Depp visits the country, many fans were in full cosplay for the event:

There's probably going to be another close race for the #1 spot this weekend between Confessions of a Murderer and Beauty and the Beast, but based on pre-sales and morning/afternoon ticket sales, the former should earn its third-consecutive week atop the box office.

Disney may have major reason to celebrate after Sunday as well, since Beauty and the Beast could out-gross Alice in Wonderland (¥11.80 billion) to become their highest-grossing live-action film in Japan -- if it doesn't happen on Sunday, it's going to happen on Monday.

Hacksaw Ridge will be the top opener this weekend, aiming for a Top 3 ranking if all goes as planned for it. And given the end of June is notable weak, distributor Kino Films will likely achieve their highest Top 10 ranking ever with this release. Japan won't contribute anywhere close to China's impressive figure, but topping the UK to become the second biggest international market for the film looks doable.

So I have to go to Japan to see Terminator 2: Judgement Day in 3D. I hope it comes to Hong Kong. It was in China already last Summer and I missed it.

The 3D only showings may limited its release, but it should be somewhat easy find a theater playing it. Kino Films is distributing it and while they're still classified as an independent distributor, they've recently been capable of getting their films nationwide releases (100+ locations, 9/9 regions).

It'll be very crowded, however, since it opens at the beginning of Obon Week - the busiest week of the year. Definitely reserve your seat in advance if you can.

As expected, this weekend marked the third-consecutive week that we have a very close race for the #1 spot between the top 2 films.

>Confessions of a Murderer appears to have edge out another weekend victory, its third-consecutive, delivering another excellent hold. Its chances of exceeding ¥2 billion ($20 million) are becoming higher and higher, and it'll have to suffer some serious drops over the next couple weeks to miss the milestone. It's likely to out-gross Kong: Skull Island to become the highest-grossing film of 2017 for Warner Bros..

>Beauty and the Beast might have to settle for another close second place finish, but its tenth weekend is one of the 10 biggest of all-time. Also, Disney will have reason to celebrate today as well, since the film will out-gross Alice in Wonderland (¥11.80 billion) to become their highest-grossing live-action film in Japan -- if it doesn't happen with actuals tomorrow, it's going to happen on Monday.

>Hacksaw Ridge came in a little lower than I was expecting but if it stays above ¥100 million with actuals, it's a win for the film and a bigger win for distributor Kino Films. Japan will become either its second or third biggest international market behind China (very impressive there), and maybe the UK.

Yes, it was. I even took a photo because I was pissed at missing it. It came out on 31st July 2016. This photo was taken in October 2016 (sorry, it was taken at night but you can just about see everything):

Very busy day, so I'm going to post the Weekend Actuals and chart updates tomorrow afternoon; most films are up slightly compared to estimates.

I do want to confirm that Beauty and the Beast officially became Disney's highest-grossing live-action film on Sunday, out-grossing Alice in Wonderland which held that record for seven years. The film also became Disney's most-attended live-action film, selling more tickets than Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End which held the record for ten years.

Needless to say Disney must be very pleased, though I expect this gives them more reason to cut it into its run with screen/showtime cuts this upcoming weekend when Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales opens given the records it just claimed.

BatB needs $20 million dollar more to become highest grossing musical film at worldwide boxoffice. Japan is its last hope, which is just destroyed by another Disney's film Pirate.

$20 million more would have been very unlikely anyway, but yeah, it won't get there now. I have it adding ~$7/8 million more from this point forward for ~$112 million.

>Confessions of a Murderer edged out another weekend victory, its third-consecutive week at #1, delivering yet another excellent hold selling a further 165,052 admissions.

>Beauty and the Beast had to settle for another close second place finish, selling a further 144,239 admissions, but its tenth weekend is one of the 10 biggest of all-time. Also, Disney has major reason to celebrate, too, since the film out-grossed Alice in Wonderland over the weekend to become their highest-grossing live-action film in Japan and their most-attended live-action film by selling more admissions than Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End.

It's become a trend for Disney to cut into the legs of their major performers late in their runs when they have another major tentpole coming up (Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales on Saturday), so I expect the same to happen this upcoming weekend, especially with the two records Beauty and the Beast just claimed.

>Hacksaw Ridge came in a little lower than I was expecting but it stays above ¥100 million with actuals, so it's a win for the film and a bigger win for distributor Kino Films. Mel Gibson's latest sold 83,135 admissions over the weekend across 252 screens. Japan will become either its second or third biggest international market behind China (very impressive there), and maybe the UK.

June is finally over, and the box office will enter the two biggest months of the year -- July and August -- this upcoming weekend, so expect some interesting figures at last in the coming weeks/months.

“Gods are great ... but the heart is greater. For it is from our hearts they come, and to our hearts they shall return.”
“We were like gods at the dawning of the world, & our joy was so bright we could see nothing else but the other.”
“There are three things all wise men fear: the sea in storm, a night with no moon, and the anger of a gentle man.”
“You have to pretend you get an endgame. You have to carry on like you will; otherwise, you can't carry on at all.”
"Paper is dead without words / Ink idle without a poem / All the world dead without stories."
