Post Re: Japan Box Office: Toy Story 4 Aims To Make History
So, Toy Story 4 just achieved the second biggest Sunday in the past 12 years by surpassing Detective Conan: The Fist of Blue Sapphire's Sunday (from just three months ago!) this past hour. The only film in the past 12 years that had a bigger Sunday was the first Yo-Kai Watch film from 2014 (which probably holds the biggest Sunday ever). Due to a weaker Saturday, it won't beat Conan's opening weekend, but reaching 1 million admissions over the weekend frame has become a possibility.

The level of which Toy Story 4 is outperforming every other imported animated release is absolutely incredible. Achieving a new opening record for an imported animated film was likely going into the weekend based on pre-sales and everything, but it could end up beating Toy Story 3's imported animation opening revenue record by more than 30%, and Finding Nemo's imported animation opening admissions record by 35-40%.

I'll have an estimate up for it later once Sunday concludes, but you'll see just how baffling its opening will be in comparison soon.

And, while Pokemon: Mewtwo Strikes Back - Evolution is playing a distant second place this weekend, its opening weekend is also very impressive. It seems likely to achieve the biggest opening weekend in the franchise since either 2010/2011 now, beating the last seven/eight entries (nine if Detective Pikachu is included) in the series. It's not messing around either.

So legs would be the same as Dory's or will they be bigger because Dory didn't open on a Friday?

Post Re: Japan Box Office: Toy Story 4 Aims To Make History
Friday vs. Saturday openings don't affect a film's opening weekend or legs very much. Friday is still very much a weekday in Japan, and it's not even the strongest weekday (only the third biggest), so it doesn't really affect the weekend business very much for a film unless said film appeals strongly (sometimes exclusively) to a particular fanbase and few others.

Finding Dory wasn't particularly well-received, as has been the case with every non-Toy Story Pixar sequel in the market, so Toy Story 4 will probably have better legs. Multipliers for mid-July releases often land between 8-10 (Dory got 9.16), and 10 or more isn't uncommon for well-received films.

Right now, reviews/audiences score are positive (3.5/5), but not glowing like with Toy Story 3 and the other very-leggy Pixar films. But it's early. The opening weekend audience will only be 10% or so of its total audience, so we just need to see how WOM is, and you can't get a good read on that until a week or two of release in Japan.

I'll have an estimate up soon, but ¥10 billion+ ($90 million+) is nearly guaranteed, and it'll probably end up challenging Finding Nemo for Pixar's highest-grossing film in the market.

I'm preparing seven or so consecutive posts (charts) coming up in the next half-hour, so if anyone has a question about them, or something else, try waiting until they're all posted so it doesn't get lost in the batch.

Yeah, looks good.

My estimates are: Opening Weekend: ¥1.325 billion ($12.2 million) / ~1,000,000 admissions. 3-Day Total: ¥1.625 billion ($15.0 million) / ~1,225,000 admissions.

By far the biggest opening for an imported animated film. It's kind of ridiculous when you compare it to all the others. Charts coming up.

Really impressive OW. Top 5 in admissions and Yen gross. What is the best case scenario. This release date is great with summer weekdays and Obon week ahead. Can it hit 15B?

¥15 billion (~$140 million) would nearly happen if it matches its predecessors legs. But that's asking for a lot. It's not impossible, of course, just unlikely -- think of it as the ceiling, or best case scenario. It is targeting a total of ¥12/13 billion ($110-120 million).

And yes, mid-July is always a great time, arguably the best time, to release a film. Competition is always humongous going into late-July and early/mid-August, but the box-office is so lucrative during this time of the year, that multiple blockbusters (even uber-blockbusters) can co-exist pretty easily. A blockbuster, or two, is typically scheduled every week from mid-July through mid-August.

Everything benefits from the summer vacation (the 6-weeks of no school is the longest period in Japan) and the Obon Festival in mid-August.

2019 reminds me a lot of 2010. There was a very leggy release from the previous year making a ton of money into the next year and surpassing ¥10 billion (Avatar vs Bohemian Rhapsody), a Disney live-action remake passing ¥10 billion (Alice in Wonderland vs Aladdin) and then a Toy Story sequel passing ¥10 billion as well (Toy Story 3 vs Toy Story 4). Not to mention a very big local animation breakout (Arrietty vs Weathering with You).

Wouldn't it be something if Weathering with You didn't debut at #1 next weekend?

It would certainly be something, but don't bet on that. ;)

Toho is really, really pushing the film, probably more than any film that I've seen.

They reached a deal a couple weeks back with every theater chain it's going to play in next weekend to begin playing it simultaneously at 9AM beginning on Friday on their biggest screen at every single location. And not just at their own theater chain, literally every theater chain. Many of its launch showings are already near 50% capacity.

And good job recognizing how much this year is mirroring 2010. I was preparing a post to discuss this after next weekend. LOL.

Corpse,
Lion King was bigger than Beast back in 90's and so can the new live action movie do better than beast 2017.

I think The Lion King has to achieve "phenomenon status" to get anywhere close to 100m dollars. Like open above 200M in NA and huge around the world, so it can create hype in Japan. If it doesn't, pretty sure it will land closer to Jungle Book than to BatB.
