04 (---) ¥380,000,000 ($3.3 million), 0, ¥380,000,000 ($3.3 million), Cars 3 (Disney) NEW

05 (02) ¥312,000,000 ($2.7 million), -27%, ¥1,050,000,000 ($9.3 million), Mary and the Witch's Flower (Toho) WK2

>Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales likely retained its position atop the box office with a great third weekend hold in the face of a lot of new competition. The fifth entry in the Pirates franchise continues to perform within expectations following its opening, and is still on course for a total around ¥7.0-7.5 billion ($60-70 million).

>Pokemon: I Choose You! definitely won the weekend in terms of admissions (450,000+), but since the franchise skews very young, it'll have to settle for second (maybe third) over the weekend in revenue. Its weekend rank, however, isn't the story to tell here: The 20th film in the franchise saw a significant increase of 65% over last year's film, and a 52% increase over the film before it. The newest film will be aiming for a total of ¥3.5 billion ($30 million+). The Pokemon film franchise had been on a downward spiral in recent years, with the last couple scoring franchise lows, so the result of the new film is more than welcomed and couldn't have happened at a better time.

>Gintama performed very well over the weekend, and if it stays above ¥500 million, it'll have a comparable opening to the first Rurouni Kenshin sequel and the Death Note films (all from Warner Bros.). The film opened ahead of the weekend on Friday, so its ongoing total should be pretty close to ¥700 million already. Also, after tomorrow's holiday, its four day total will be near ¥1 billion going into the Summer weekdays. Look for a total of ¥3.5-4.0 billion ($30-40 million) for the live-action adaptation of the popular Gintama manga/anime.

>Cars 3 mostly disappointed, having to settle for a fourth place debut over the weekend. Its estimated opening weekend is almost 20% below Cars 2 and just on par with Cars. It'll still end up with a respectable total given the time of year, and should be on target for a total near ¥3 billion ($25 million).

>Mary and the Witch's Flower recovered on Sunday and avoided a 30% drop in its second weekend, which would have been quite disappointing. So far, its performance is similar as When Marnie Was There (slightly higher), so it's currently heading for a total between ¥3.0-3.5 billion ($25-30 million+).

>Power Rangers really bombed, much more so than anticipated. I suppose it's not that surprising, since Japan has had Kamen Rider and Super Sentai for nearly 50 years now, but it's still a disastrous debut. It'll be a target of severe screen/showtime cuts now, so I'm guessing it'll finish around ¥300 million ($3 million) or so.

Monday is a holiday, so Weekend Actuals will be delayed until Tuesday/Wednesday. I'll track the admissions as I did over the weekend today (Monday) as well, and post 3-Day Holiday Weekend Estimates tomorrow night.

Based on estimates, Power Rangers is down 30-35% versus the most recent Super Sentai films.

Nice to see Pokemon recover. Based on these totals, the franchise should be crossing the 80 billion yen mark this year.

Gintama is performing very well (probably going to have the biggest live-action debut for a domestic film this year so far), and Tokyo Ghoul and especially Full Metal Alchemist will do good numbers as well.

The trailer was awful for Gintama, all the characters look like cosplayers, nothing better than kamen rider :P

Btw I read somewhere that Your Name is going to release in stardust theater, is it going to be a film festival?

Umi no Hi (Ocean Day) is typically a little weaker than Saturday/Sunday, but so far this year's is comfortably ahead of each day across the board.

Very strong Ocean Day this year, greater than Saturday and on par with Sunday.

I'll have the 3-Day Holiday Weekend Estimates up shortly.

With Cars 3 failing, can DM3 reach 50M dollars?

I highly doubt it. I don't see it matching the success of Sing or Minions, though an increase over Despicable Me 2 is still likely (thinking $30 million or so).

Are you wanting it to reach $50 million? :P

Nice to see Pokemon recover. Based on these totals, the franchise should be crossing the 80 billion yen mark this year.

Yep. And I'll post the updated all-time franchises list in the coming weeks.

To be fair, I don't think you saw Sing or Minions being as successful as they were before they came out (not that I thought differently).

True. I've underestimated Illumination in the market for the past couple years now. Let's wait and see what happens. :)

12 (06) ¥36,910,600 ($329,000), -50%, ¥233,048,100 ($2.1 million), John Wick: Chapter 2 (Pony Canyon) WK2

NOTE: Cumulative totals are as of Monday (the 17th).

>Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales retained its position atop the box office with a great third weekend in revenue, but actually fell to third place in admissions, selling 388,679 admissions in its third weekend. The fifth entry in the Pirates franchise continues to perform within expectations following its opening, and is still on course for a total around ¥7.5 billion ($70 million).

>Gintama performed very well over the weekend, matching the debuts of other WB live-action adaptations such as Rurouni Kenshin and Death Note. The live-action adaptation of the popular Gintama manga/anime sold 392,800 admissions over the weekend frame (and 742,254 for its 4-day) across 338 screens; it's the biggest debut for Warner Bros. so far this year, and the biggest debut for a live-action domestic film as well. Look for a total ¥4.0 billion+ ($35 million+), giving Warner Bros. yet another big hit in the market on the domestic front.

>Pokemon: I Choose You! won the weekend in terms of admissions, selling 436,078 admissions over the weekend frame (and 663,595 for the 3-day) across 368 screens, but had to settle for third in revenue due to its low avg. ticket price. Its weekend rank, however, isn't the story to tell here: The 20th film in the franchise saw a significant increase of 59% over last year's film. The newest film will be aiming for a total of ¥3.5 billion ($30 million+) and over 3 million admissions. The Pokemon film franchise had been on a downward spiral in recent years, with the last couple scoring franchise lows, so the result of the new film is more than welcomed and couldn't have happened at a better time.

>Cars 3 mostly disappointed, having to settle for a fourth place debut over the weekend selling 251,989 admissions over the weekend frame (and 403,051 for the 3-day) across 440 screens. Its opening weekend is 27% below Cars 2 and 16% below Cars. I'm sure it'll have fine legs given the time of year, but a total of ¥2.5 billion ($20 million+) will be near its ceiling.

>Mary and the Witch's Flower recovered on Sunday and avoided a 30% drop in its second weekend, which would have been quite disappointing. So far, its performance is similar as When Marnie Was There, so it's currently heading for a total between ¥3.0-3.5 billion ($25-30 million+).
