What kind of boost can it get from these 4DX theatres?

It's a popular format, so as long as enough fans want to pay again to see it, it should provide a decent enough bump. I don't think it'll be enough to give it an increase next weekend or anything, not at this point in its run, but it should keep the third weekend drop solid. If it does drop ~55/60% this weekend, it was probably heading for a ~40/45% drop in its third this time of year + frontloaded factor, so that might look more like 30%, for example. (Not a prediction. Just an example to show its possible impact next week.)

Post Re: Japan Box Office: Biggest Fourth Weekends
Top Gun: Maverick is down about 20% versus last Saturday, so using this for the weekend, here is where it'll place on the Biggest Fourth Weekends Chart. Yeah, I'd be really surprised if DBS got to ¥3 billion. ¥2.5 billion can still be attained though. Even frontloaded films can double their two-week totals, which, based on some estimates, would be close to that mark.

The June release (though not their fault due to being hacked) really sucks. It's just a bad month, second only to October, and unless everything goes right, it's generally a graveyard for openers. One Piece being in August really complicated things for Toei, too, and sort of forced their hand further to go with June vs July/August. Maybe a mid-Sept release (to take advantage of the Silver Week holidays there, although this year they don't align for a full week holiday period) would have been better, but that's also an iffy spot because the weeks/months to follow are weak.

That April hack really screwed with it. That's not to say it would have done substantially more with a better release date, because this is a fanbase-driven film in the end, but better release dates optimize potential (probably ¥4 billion in this case) and can help bring in a small number of casual moviegoers too, whereas poor release dates largely eliminates more than a bare-minimum sort of performance.

Think even in april this would've done 3b best case scenario imo.

For TG, if it behaves similarly to 2nd weekend I think it'll do 127kish sun for -17% weekend instead. Since there is no giveaway this weekend sunday should behave closer to saturday rather than the drop it had last weekend imo. But maybe it doesn't. Will be a great hold either way.

I pretty much agree. I think there was ¥3/3.5 billion potential, but releasing while little/nothing is ongoing with the franchise, it's basically having to rely solely on the core fanbase here, especially with the release date, and will probably settle around ¥2.5 billion instead. This isn't *bad*, if it gets there it'll still be the fourth biggest film in the franchise (in revenue), but a little more could have been made here. But we'll see what impact the 4DX expansion has, as well as if it gets Dolby Cinema in the future. If they tie in some giveaways with these, they can push it higher. But I'm going to assume they're not since the 4DX expansion is next week and I haven't seen anything announced.

Also, since there are some KyoAni fans here: If you want a BO History Chart (like the WSJ one above), let me know. However... since many don't reach ¥1 billion, I'd ask you to share their figures if you have them. Anything that earns over ¥1 billion is easy to find, but results below this mark requires trying to look them up and I don't really have the time for that. So... just let me know.

What's the difference between your numbers for the Dragon Ball movies and the ones displayed here?

Post Re: Japan Box-Office: WKND Actuals (06/11-12); Charts Update
Mine are wrong and outdated! ;) Glad you shared that. There are some charts that I did a while back, which included the Dragon Ball BO History Chart back 7-9 years ago, where I had to estimate the grosses because only the distributor income was reported by the normal sources before 2000. To get these estimates for films where the gross (revenue) wasn't reported before 2000, I'd use films that had their earnings released as a basis.

I should have caught the Dragon Ball numbers by now though because this source: https://nendai-ryuukou.com/article/088.html (same numbers in the CR article there) has filled in the missing (estimated) numbers for a lot of films released before 2000 on my charts over the years. But some do pop up now and then like this.

I've corrected the majority (including the USD estimates using the avg. exchange rate of the first 3 months of each film's release). The only ones remaining (the first 6 releases and the last 2 releases in the 90s) are the ones at ¥1 billion (or less) in the source I provided. I always assumed this was their distributor income, but it's possible it's their gross (revenue) instead as the rest are (they performed unusually worse though, but maybe it just took some time before it took off in 1991). I'll try to see if I can find a second source that matches. (Feel free to share if you find more, too.)

126.5, so close :P
But it looks like -17% at usuals indeed like I thought. At this point I think TG gets 8b+ for sure especially since next week is empty and lightyear looks really week just about everywhere. DBS dropped pretty harsh.

The exchange rating became slightly more favorable (still around that 24 year low though) this past week, so I think their USD total is likely too high.

Paramount said it was above ¥4.5 billion after a 6% drop last weekend, which was a good bit higher than the actual (¥4.37 billion and a 12% weekend drop).

The admissions at the usual locations just don't indicated it earned almost ¥1.5 billion over the full week (it'd be roughly flat for the entire week if it did, which it's not...). I'm getting more like ¥1.05/1.1 billion, so I'm still going with about ~¥5.4/5.5 billion. If it's ¥300/400 million higher than that when actuals come in tomorrow, awesome. No complaints here! I just don't know where that much was gained over the week. Even if the avg. ticket price shot up, it doesn't add up. So, I'm pretty certain Paramount has overestimated it again.

And good job predicting the Sunday/weekend, JustLurking.

And yes, I think we can safely call it going above ¥8 billion now. Giving it an average weekly drop of 25% gets it to ¥8.5 billion. It's been holding better than that, of course, so giving it an average weekly drop of 20% gets it up to ¥9.5 billion. So... I'd project, for the time being, a finish between ¥8.5-9.5 billion (~$64-73 million).

Its chances of reaching ¥10 billion have gone up a good deal this past week, but I'd wait a couple more weeks to see how it's doing before saying it's truly in play. Competition is light until July 15th, which will definitely help, then it will begin to suffer from hefty screen/showtime cuts when all the big July/August releases begin to roll out. If it's comfortably above ¥8 billion by July 15th (20% average weekly drops 'til then puts it right on that mark on July 10th, so it'd need some weeks at 15% or better to be comfortably above it), ¥10 billion looks good.

Post Re: Japan Box-Office: July Release Schedule
Haven't posted a release schedule almost all year (my bad), so here is July! Also, I slightly altered the general theater count key at the bottom (for those that remember these posts). I had >350 as optimal (since 360/365 was often the ceiling), but enough theaters have opened in recent years that ~370-380 has become the new ceiling.

July Release Schedule:

07/01:
[334] - Elvis (Warner Bros.)
[121] - Yuru Camp: The Movie (Shochiku)
[x73] - Black Phone (Toho-Towa)
[N/A] - Lightyear (Disney)

07/08:
[223] - My Boyfriend in Orange (Shochiku)
[127] - Encyclopedia of Pitiful Animals: The Movie (Aeon Entertainment)
[119] - X (Happinet Phantom)
[x89] - Touken Ranbu: Hanamaru ~Setsugetsuka~ "Moon Story" (Toho Video Division) *3-Weeks-Only*
[x73] - Hinatazaka46 Documentary Film 2nd: Hopes and Despair - Nobody Knows Their Tears (TBS TV, Kiguu)
[N/A] - Thor: Love and Thunder (Disney)

07/15:
[375] - Kingdom 2: To Distant Lands (Toho, Sony)
[373] - Minions: The Rise of Gru (Toho-Towa)
[148] - Coupez! (Gaga)

July 15th -Sept. 4th: Summer Vacation Begins!
July 18th: National Holiday (Umi no Hi)

07/22:
[338] - Kamen Rider Revice: The Movie / Avataro Sentai Donbrothers: The Movie (Toei) *Double-Feature*
[330] - Ghost Book (Toho)

07/29:
[378] - Jurassic World: Dominion (Toho-Towa)
[309] - Even If This Love Disappears From the World Tonight (Toho)

**********

Note: Preliminary theater counts in [brackets] are subject-to-change but rarely change much.
Note (2): Counts exclude premium theaters.
Note (3): Release schedule posting excludes most very limited releases (<50 locations) unless from a notable distributor or notable release.

General (Standard) Theater Count Key:
<100: Limited / 101-149: Wide / 150-199: Below Average / 200-274: Average / 275-324: Above Average / 324-369: Very Wide / >370: Optimal.

Well, Paramount says $5.4M / $42.8M (+8.5%)

They gotta be kidding me (。ŏ﹏ŏ)

Ever since Feb 2022, this JPY-USD has been spam file. Well, actuals being off by ¥30M-¥50M is some how okay but recent off value is toooooooooooo much. Well, can't blame them as we ourselves are atleast behind by 24 years and who knows what exchange rate they using...... Actuals at evening will shock everyone tbh

Yeah, that's very off. :P The total not so much (it's likely around $41/42m), but who knows how they got that weekend figure. But that weekend gross would be about ¥720 million... That'd put its average ticket price for the weekend around ¥2,100... Yeah, no. That would mean that nearly all (over 90% at least, maybe more) of its admissions over the weekend were premium formats.

That could be it! It's been a long time since that's happened though, and while their weekend figure was off last weekend, it wasn't super off like this weekend. But yeah, if they're using Fri-Sun this weekend versus Sat-Sun last weekend, that could be it. It's the only thing that makes sense, anyway.

Numbers usually begin to be released between 3-5pm (JPT) on Monday. From the time of this post, that's about 6-8 hours from now.

Post Re: Japan Box-Office: WKND Actuals (06/11-12); Charts Update
TGM 4th WKend - ¥594M / ¥5.6B (-11.2%)

I haven't got actuals yet but should be closed to ¥5.65B (it's just my prediction but could lower too. Depending on actual it will be clarified whether it has crossed ¥5.0B on Friday or not (✷‿✷)

¥1,274 million? That's more than I expected.

Is there a weekend total for that or just a overall total?
