The post-Golden Week weekend regularly experiences harsh drops, and this weekend will big no exception; although, we might see the drops come in slightly better than recent years since the past weekdays firmly occurred post-holiday frame which might soften the blow a bit.

>Beauty and the Beast will easily take the top spot once again, claiming its fourth-consecutive week atop the box office (and it won't be the last). It will, however, experience the post-Golden Week decline, but its Saturday pre-sales and morning ticket sales suggest it'll have a respectable drop over the post-holiday frame.

>Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 will likely edge out both The Fate of the Furious and Detective Conan: Crimson Love Letter to claim second place in its debut weekend. Based on its Friday performance, and Saturday pre-sales/morning ticket sales, it's looking at an opening weekend around ¥300 million - that'd be a nice 30-35% increase over the original film from 2014.

>And as I briefly mentioned above, the latest films in the Furious and Detective Conan franchises will likely be bumped down one position, but it's really a coin-toss on which film will come in third place over the weekend.

I hope Beauty and the Beast can still outgross Alice in Wonderland. It has fallen slightly behind Alice's gross at the same point in time but I guess we still need to see its holds in the upcoming weeks.

I think that opening for GotG2 is/will be good when comparing how Marvel movies do in Japan.

I don't believe it quite reached ¥300 million, probably more like ¥275 million. But it'll still be a fine opening if so, likely over 20% higher than the original.

It's a bit late to post Weekend Estimates, but most films will end up declining a bit harsher than the forecast (up to 5% worse overall). Beauty and the Beast, however, performed slightly better than the forecast, but still dropped over 30% - which is great for the post-Golden Week holiday frame, but also indicates it'll mostly behave as normal hereon. Its ranking on the Biggest Fourth Weeks list above will likely go unchanged.

Corpse, do you know what the multiplier for Tangled was? According to BOM, it apparently made $31 million from a $1.7 million opening. I didn't see it on your list, so I was wondering if it wasn't a wide release or something like that.

Tangled opened in 2011, right when one of the biggest earthquakes ever hit Japan. Its opening was subdued, and then the film obviously developed some very strong legs.

Omni answered your question.

Tangled and other films released in early/mid March 2011 are unique releases due to the Tohoku Earthquake (9.1; third biggest ever recorded). Understandably, films that opened the week of the quake had very deflated debuts, due to the large number of theaters that closed and remained closed for several weeks (somewhere around the 60% figure were closed in the first few days).

So, as a result of the theaters gradually reopening over the following day/weeks/months after the number of bigger aftershocks, power concerns, building evaluations, etc. were completed, many films released just prior to or during the quake developed incredible legs.

The post-Golden Week weekend regularly experiences harsh drops, and this weekend was no exception - lots of ~50%+ drops across the board.

>Beauty and the Beast easily took the top spot once again, delivering an impressive 35% decline post-Golden Week to claim its fourth-consecutive week atop the box office (and it won't be the last). After 24 days in release, Disney's latest live-action iteration has sold 5,649,320 admissions, becoming the most-attended film since last August, and the 97th reported film to exceed 5 million admissions at the box-office.

The film has several weeks, a month+ really, to continue its box-office dominance and will probably reach the ¥10 billion ($90 million+) uber-blockbuster milestone near the end of the month, and look for a total somewhere within the range of ¥11-12 billion ($100-105 million), a very common gross for Disney's biggest live-action releases (they have four other films that are actually in that range).

>Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 managed to squeak out a second place debut in a close battle for the position, selling 163,143 admissions over the weekend frame across 705 screens, besting the debut of its predecessor by a so-so 12%. The opening is big enough to guarantee a total above ¥1 billion ($10 million), but due to the general frontloaded nature of most Marvel/DC films, look for a total no higher than ¥1.5 billion ($13/14 million).

Marvel, and other imported comic/superhero studios, will likely never have a major presence in Japan, but their films are continuing to grow with the box-office, even if it's small increases year after year.

>Detective Conan: Crimson Love Letter almost scored another week in second place, but a sub-50% decline post-Golden Week is certainly a welcomed accomplishment for the franchise. The 21st entry in the long-running series continues to outpace last year's recrod-breaking franchise film, and should finish around ¥6.5 billion ($60 million), a figure that's unlikely to be beaten by any other animated film this year. This will be the five-consecutive film in the series to break the franchise record.

>The Fate and the Furious wasn't spared the post-Golden Week decline, dropping over 50%, but after setting a new record opening for the franchise, it's very likely going on to outgross Furious 7 to become the highest-grossing film in the franchise as well. I expect a finish around ¥3.7/3.8 billion ($35 million).

>Your Name. is no longer being tracked, so its running total likely won't be reported now until it's officially completed its run in the coming weeks/months.

look for a total somewhere within the range of ¥11-12 billion ($100-105 million), a very common gross for Disney's biggest live-action releases (they have 5 other films that are actually in that range).

I know there's Alice in Wonderland, Dead Man's Chest, At World's End, and The Force Awakens. What's the 5th Disney live-action?

I edited that line earlier, sorry; it's actually four: Alice in Wonderland (¥11.80 billion), Star Wars: The Force Awakens (¥11.63 billion), Finding Nemo (¥11.00 billion), and Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End (¥10.90 billion - close enough).

Beauty and the Beast will likely earn a very similar gross as these four films, and anything above Alice will make it Disney's highest-grossing live-action film in the market.

Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest actually barely exceeded ¥10 billion (¥10.02 billion).

Thanks. I was wondering if it was Finding Nemo, but you said live-action. ;)

Here's hoping that BatB passes Alice, I expected a better drop for it but this is good as well.

Nice for GotG2.

It's a much better post-Golden Week drop than Alice for sure. Hopefully, its late legs are also better than Alice.

Corpse,
Might I ask you to double check the Most-Attended List numbers for Shin Godzilla? I thought you had it wrap up at around 5.69, but ever since then you've had it on the Most-Attended list at 5.59. I'm wondering if this is an error and/or if this puts it somewhere else in the list?

Good catch, and welcome to the forum.

It finished with 5.69 million admissions (that I posted with the Yearly Results from Eiren). 5.59 million admissions was the last figure available before tracking ended, and I never updated it on the Most-Attended Films List. I'll get on it now. It actually moves up 4 positions on the list.
