Entries By Month: July (10); December (7); August (3); January (2); March (2); April (2); November (2); February (1); May (1); June (1); September (1); October (0).

The Greatest Showman allows the month of February to finally have an exceptionally leggy film. Now, unsurprisingly given it's the weakest month of the year, October is the last remaining month to not feature a film on the list.

Michael Jackson's This Is It is the leggiest film released in October currently, with a 10.06 multiplier, so it's going to take something very, very special for October to ever have a film make this list.

Are these from 2-day weekends? So if a film earned 150 on Friday, and 300 Sat-Sun, the multiplier as of Sunday would be 1.5x?

Yes. Opening Weekends include Saturday and Sunday only. If a film opens on Friday (or earlier), its pre-weekend gross/admissions is added to the cumulative total.

>Hirokazu Takeba's Shoplifters is going to secure itself a second weekend atop the weekend box-office, and following its very impressive weekdays (roughly 30% higher than its opening weekend), it's almost certain to have a very long performance ahead. It's still a bit early, but a total north of ¥3 billion ($30 million) has become likely. Takeba has definitely become one of Japan's most reliable directors at the box-office, following several critically acclaimed releases.

>Recall, based on the novel by Jun Ikeido, had a decent start yesterday, and has some solid pre-sales today, indicating that it'll enjoy a respectable debut in second place. If this one does come in over ¥200 million this weekend, then this year's June has outperformed the month's usual poor results.

>Maze Runner: The Death Cure and Wonder finally reach Japan, and both seem set for decent enough debuts. The Maze Runner franchise never gained any traction in Japan, so if it can hit ¥100 million this weekend, it'd be a success. And Wonder, being released by the independent distributor Kino Films, should do pretty well for itself as well.

>Detective Conan: Zero the Enforcer keeps on holding very well, and is coming closer and closer to becoming the highest-grossing domestic, animated franchise film ever. Currently in its tenth week of release, it looks possible that it'll achieve twelve weeks in total in the Top 10.

This is what I love about Japan. If this was a Chinese poster, they'd have the Asian front-and-center.

But there are no Asian in the poster. Two actresses that subjectively look like Indian and Chinese are both born in USA and hold USA nationality.

Subjectively? Nora Lum Ying (a salt of the earth American name!) totally looks Asian. I don't care what your PC bible says. And her parents are Chinese and Korean. Hence why she looks Asian.

FTR, I wouldn't ever refer to Mindy Kaling as "Asian". If I was referring to her, I'd have said Indian.

For those interested, since Batman has a lot of fans here, Batman Ninja opened this weekend and is doing okay business.

The film opened in limited release on 60 screens, and based on Saturday's numbers, is aiming for a debut around ¥17/18 million ($150,000+) and a 3-day total of ¥22/23 million ($200,000+). That'd give it a weekend ranking in the Top 20, and maybe just inside the Top 15 if it's not too frontloaded.

It seems that Japan is the only country that it's receiving a theatrical release in. Pretty odd that it didn't get a theatrical release in the US, considering it's a joint US production and past animated Batman films received theatrical releases, I believe.

Well, I think it's obvious why it's getting a Japanese release and not elsewhere.

True, true. But not receiving a U.S. theatrical release is still a bit bizarre.

>Hirokazu Takeba's Shoplifters repeats atop the box-office in its second weekend, delivering a satisfying drop following some very strong weekdays -- which is sometimes a sign that weekend drops will be harsh. It's still a bit early, but a total north of ¥3 billion ($30 million) has become likely. Takeba has definitely become one of Japan's most reliable directors at the box-office, following several critically acclaimed releases.

>Recall, based on the novel by Jun Ikeido, enjoyed a solid debut in second place, and continues June's successful openers streak. It'll easily reach the ¥1 billion ($10 million) milestone, and if distributor Shochiku is lucky, might be able to reach ¥1.5 billion (~$15 million).

>Deadpool 2 fell surprisingly hard in its third weekend, and as a result, it's unlikely to reach the ¥2 billion milestone to match its predecessor now.

>Maze Runner: The Death Cure and Wonder finally reach Japan, and both unfortunately disappointed. Well, Wonder didn't do too bad since it was a Kino Films release, but it's still not particularly good. The Death Cure, though, is pretty much a bomb by missing the ¥100 million mark, and coming in around 30% below its predecessor.

>Detective Conan: Zero the Enforcer keeps on holding very well, and is coming closer and closer to becoming the highest-grossing domestic, animated franchise film ever (about ¥170 million away). Currently in its tenth week of release, it looks possible that it'll achieve twelve weeks in total in the Top 10.

>Outside the Top 10, in sixteenth or seventeenth place, Batman Ninja grossed around ¥15/16 million ($135,000-$150,000) in limited release.

Hey Corpse, When IW stops tracking may you post the estimated Distributors Income for all of the Spider-Man and Avengers movies since they seem to be the most popular Marvel/DC movies.

Of course. Avengers: Infinity War is losing the majority of its theaters today (20th), and more are dropping it tomorrow (21st), so tracking for it will very likely end on June 29th or 30th when any remaining theaters drop it before Summer begins.

Corpse,
This may be looking for a needle in a haystack, but is there any number, or estimate, on how the second Godzilla anime did after its abysmal first week. It flopped hard, even for its low theater count, but there's plenty who would like an idea of how it did.

I can't find any actual numbers for it. However, looking at its ticket sales from the usual locations since its release and using the same avg. ticket price as the first film, I can provide an estimate and that's only ¥190/200 million ($1.7/1.8 million)... total. Definitely disappointing.

Its run isn't over yet, tracking just ended because it fell out of wide release a couple weeks ago.

It's currently playing at just 7 locations, but as long as it keeps playing, I'm pretty confident it'll achieve blockbuster status (¥5 billion). It didn't look like Up was going to quite reach ¥5 billion, but when its official total was released (13 months after opening), it was exactly ¥5.00 billion. I could see the same thing happening again here.

No major openers and only a couple solid holdovers from last week is going to make this weekend one of the weakest of the year. That's no unusual for the month of June, but the last three weeks of at least one good debut makes this weekend very boring.

>Shoplifters, the gem of June this year, will win its third-consecutive weekend atop the box-office, as it nears the ¥2.5 billion mark on its way to exceeding the ¥3 billion (~$30 million) milestone. This will become Hirokazu Takeba's highest-grossing film since 2013's Like Father, Like Son.

>Deadpool 2 will break the ¥1.5 billion mark in its third weekend of release, and while this is a respectable number for a Marvel/DC film, it's still going to fall a bit short of reaching the ¥2 billion (~$20 million) milestone to match it's predecessor.

>Detective Conan: Zero the Enforcer will achieve an eleventh-consecutive weekend in the Top 10, and after Sunday, will be less than ¥50 million away from becoming the highest-grossing domestic animated film of all-time.

>Only the Brave finally reaches Japan, 8 months after its initial worldwide release, but it'll expectedly perform poorly and likely barely make the weekend Top 10.
