So its average ticket price has gradually been increasing over the past couple of weeks, especially so in the last week. The IMAX showings are always filling up the fastest and selling out/nearly selling out, so I'm going to presume that's the biggest reason, but also any repeat viewers are likely non-family/children which would also assist in increasing the average ticket price. Therefore, I had to go back and adjust the weekday estimates (Tues-Fri) from this past week to better reflect the daily progression because they were too low (especially Friday, likely since it reclaimed the IMAX screens Doraemon took last weekend.)

Yes. If you look at them written out in Japanese, zeroes aren't typically written before/after the decimal separator, and translators mess this up as a result. Both Sunday's gross and admissions, as well as the weekend gross, are examples of this happening this week.

I'll have all the numbers updated soon (where it's easier to understand, too).

Ok thanks for the info, I don't speak Japanese at all so I just translated but the translator showed me the wrong numbers

You're good, it happens. 9/10 times zeroes won't land in those spots, so Google translate (or another translator) will be correct most of the time.

So a better drop than Frozen over its seventh weekend. I still hope it gets that 8th weekend record as well but it will be very hard though the last volume "may" help a little. I have a feeling that we are still under-estimating its total and I don't want to jinx it but a uber-blockbuster legs from here will result in a completely insane total.

It's not to be a killjoy but it's impossible, I don't know what @Corpse thinks about it but I am planning an 8th weekend in the $6M row, from now on Demon Slayer will no longer have any records weekend because Frozen will always be on top. I hope this week the discount day and the release of the last volume of the manga will help the box office of Demon Slayer a little bit, but in my opinion it will have almost no impact.

PS : How is doing Monday ?

The three weekends of holidays might be bigger also there are more giveaways planned the weekend after so never say never.

The eighth weekend record will likely remain with Frozen due to the Golden Week boost (it increased almost 50%). I believe the release of the final volume will help Demon a bit next weekend, but not enough to actually make it increase in order to take that record.

But the ninth weekend (third giveaway event will likely keep it mostly flat versus whatever it makes next weekend) is doable, and then weekends 11-13 will be in play for sure since they're the first weekends it'll have during a holiday period. Those weekends will be very strong, and weekend increases are pretty common over New Year. And remember, it'll have already beaten Spirited Away to become #1 all-time before its eleventh weekend, before the holiday period even begins*. When it surpasses Spirited Away, just in time for the holiday period, it'll likely create renewed interest among the general public to check it out over the holidays.

*It'll likely become the #1 film of all-time with NO holiday period boost that every other #1 film (or just major performer) before it had the benefit of enjoying. All it'll have had were two single-day holidays, the bare minimum possible given its October release date.

Demon Slayer's run is truly far beyond what anyone was possibly expecting. Just for laughs, I found this post from January where Demon Slayer wasn't even considered a potential ¥10 billion earner. :funny:

And here are a few more films that should be among the bigger releases of 2020, but would need a miracle to reach ¥10 billion:

>All the Disney or Pixar animated films: Onward, Soul, Raya and the Last Dragon
>Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba the Movie: Mugen Train
>The Confidence Man JP: Princess
>Minions 2
>Stand By Me, Doraemon 2
>Kyou kara ore wa!
>Godzilla vs. King Kong

There are probably a few more not listed here. (I haven't gone in-depth yet looking at 2020 releases). And a lot of Japanese films, in particular, aren't announced or receive release dates until a few months before the debut. July is still a kind of empty, so I'd expect some big future unannounced film to go there. And as always, there could be a surprise breakout that no one is expecting yet.

2020 will be interesting to follow, and a lot of that has to do with the Summer Olympics.

Right?! :funny: And it got that miracle, all right.

The majority of the biggest films in Japan were never expected to become the biggest (or among the biggest), which makes the market fun to follow. Anytime I look ahead at a new year, I always throw in "and there could always be a surprise breakout no one is expecting" because it's 100% true.

Post Re: Japan Box-Office: Demon Slayer Obliterating Record Books
So you see a weekend over $7M ? I will not have seen a weekend below that (around $6.5M) and around 30/35% drop but maybe the release of the last volume of the manga will give it a little boost this weekend

Post Re: Japan Box-Office: Demon Slayer Obliterating Record Books
Well, the last weekend after a giveaway weekend dipped 32%. As the numbers are lower now versus then, the drop *should* improve a little bit. And add in the release of the final manga volume on Friday, a sub-30% drop is quite doable.

There might even bit some small effect of it having surpassed Titanic. It surpassed Titanic before this last weekend, but it just made the news outlet headlines yesterday following the weekend results. This should be a pretty small effect, if there is one, but even 1% makes a difference if the earnings are high enough.

06 (---) ¥x35,000,000 ($337,000), 0, ¥x45,000,000 ($0.4 million), One in a Hundred Thousand (Pony Canyon) NEW
07 (08) ¥x24,475,650 ($235,000), -03%, ¥1,973,168,630 ($19.0 million), Violet Evergarden: The Movie (Shochiku) WK11
08 (06) ¥x22,376,200 ($215,000), -33%, ¥212,787,440 ($2.0 million), Looking for Magical DoReMi (Toei) WK3
09 (07) ¥x18,517,930 ($178,000), -27%, ¥830,525,880 ($7.9 million), Your Eyes Tell (Gaga) WK6

>Demon Slayer: Mugen Train on top again, achieving a seventh-consecutive weekend above ¥1 billion. Before this, the record was "just" three-consecutive weekends above ¥1 billion and four overall weekends above ¥1 billion. And, it's now the second biggest film in the market, surpassing Titanic before the weekend even began. Also, just more absurdity, its seven week total is over ¥10 billion ($100 million+) higher than any other seven week total ever. See the last...many pages for more discussion on this film.

>Stand By Me, Doraemon 2 held pretty well in its sophomore frame. Its weekdays are going to be very poor due to its non-traditional release date (due to a COVID delay), but if it can have weekends holds on this level, or better, it could still reach Christmas/New Year with decent enough numbers to really boost its cumulative total when the time comes. I think it'll get over ¥3 billion (~$30 million) still.

>One in a Hundred Thousand is an estimate. Being an independent distributor, sometimes it take another day or two for the actual to be released. I'll update it when it's available.

>The Legend of Hei is doing amazing. I don't know what the highest grossing Chinese animated film is in the market, but I would bet this one is on track to taking that title since I can't even think of any others.

>Violet Evergarden: The Movie earns a tenth weekend in the top 10 now (it fell out a couple weeks back for one week), and is going to exceed the ¥2 billion (~$20 million) milestone next week. Nice success for Shochiku, and even bigger achievement for Kyoto Animation. You guys correct me if I'm wrong, but I do believe this has become their highest grossing film ever. Go KyoAni!

The Top 10 Films this weekend are down a respectable 27% versus last year. With no Hollywood films, maintaining about three/fourths of last year's box office is pretty impressive. The last weekend of November/first weekend of December is usually bare of notable releases, but there are several bigger local films coming up in mid/late-December that will give the box office a boost.
