Both MI6 and Incredibles are running neck to neck. Very interesting to see their runs.

Yeah I'm a little bit surprised that I2 seems to be getting its nose in front.

Post Re: Japan Box Office: Weekend Actuals; Charts Updated!
Films that skew younger perform much better than films targeting adult audiences on the weekdays in July/August due to Summer Vacation.

Incredibles 2 and Mission: Impossible - Fallout are two perfect examples of this, having opened on the same weekend. MI:6 has earned more over all three weekends so far, while I2 has earned more over the weekdays.

It's like a seesaw race. I2 is always on top, slightly, come every Friday, but once Sunday is over, M:I6 is back on top. It'll repeat like this until the beginning of September when schools start back. Then, you'll see the opposite result happening: I2 will have very poor weekdays, but stronger weekends; while M:I6 will have stronger weekdays, but weaker weekends.

And since weekdays account for the majority of box-office earnings in Japan, M:I6 should eventually gain a comfortable lead in early/mid-September and come out on top.

Doesn't seem like it based on its high average ticket price, or at least they're a very small portion of its audience. It's not surprising given it's an older franchise. School-aged kids get discounted tickets at most theaters, so it's easy to see which films they're favoring.

And its hourly ticket sales suggests M:I6 is skewing heavily adult due to its weaker morning showings versus its strong evening/night performance. It's not really targeting many senior citizens, either, otherwise it'd have strong morning sales. Its strongest showtimes are between 1PM-8PM, which is the primary time-frame that most adults (30-50 year-olds) go to the theater. This age group is also the one that receives the fewest ways to get discount tickets, since they're working people ($$$), explaining why M:I6 has a high average ticket price.

A film's average ticket prices vary greatly depending on the audience its attracting in Japan, more so than most other countries from what I can determine. M:I6 has an average ticket price about 15.1% higher than I2 after three weeks in release, and an average ticket price about 6% higher than the national average.

Post Re: Japan Box Office: Highest Grossing Films To Never Reach
Here you go. As usual, weekend data before 1998 is scattered, so the cut-off is there. I also didn't include the USD totals, but if you want them, I can edit them in at a later date.

Also, note that these are films that were never #1 at the weekend box-office in revenue -- there are a couple films on this list that were #1 in weekend admissions during their runs.

Highest-Grossing Films To Never Reach #1 (1998-)

¥6.46 billion - The Cat Returns (2002)
¥6.36 billion - Pokemon: Revelation Lugia (1999)
¥5.89 billion - Les Miserables (2012)
¥5.53 billion - Yo-Kai Watch: Great King Enma and the 5 Stories, Nyan! (2015)
¥5.26 billion - The Incredibles (2004)
¥5.21 billion - Minions (2015)
¥5.14 billion - Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation (2015)
¥5.13 billion - Jurassic Park III (2001)
¥4.85 billion - Pokemon: Lord of the Unown Tower - Entei (2000)
¥4.80 billion - Pokemon: Diamond & Pearl: Giratina and the Sky Warrior - Shaymin (2008)
¥4.67 billion - Pokemon: Diamond & Pearl: Arceus - To A Conquering Spacetime (2009)
¥4.65 billion - Mr. & Mrs. Smith (2005)
¥4.50 billion - Planet of the Apes (2001)
¥4.50 billion - Pokemon Advanced: Jirachi - Wishing Star of the Seven Nights (2003)
¥4.48 billion - Detective Conan: Sunflowers of Inferno (2015)
¥4.46 billion - From Up on Poppy Hill (2011)
¥4.42 billion - Thermae Romae II (2014)
¥4.38 billion - Pokemon Advanced: Deoxys - Sky-Splitting Visitor (2004)
¥4.33 billion - Pokemon Best Wishes: Victini and the Black Hero - Zekrom/Victini and the White Hero - Reshiram (2011)
¥4.30 billion - Pokemon Advanced: Mew and the Wave Hero - Lucario (2005)
¥4.22 billion - Wolf Children (2012)
¥4.16 billion - Pokemon Diamond & Pearl: Master of Illusions - Zoroark (2010)
¥4.11 billion - Detective Conan: Dimensional Sniper (2014)
¥4.10 billion - Nodame Cantabile: The Final Score - Part I (2009)
¥4.05 billion - The Fate of the Furious (2017)
¥4.04 billion - Inside Out (2015)
¥3.90 billion - Ratatouille (2007)
¥3.90 billion - Pokemon: Celebi - A Timeless Encounter (2001)
¥3.90 billion - Vertical Limit (2000)
¥3.72 billion - Nodame Cantabile: The Final Score - Part II (2010)
¥3.61 billion - Pokemon Best Wishes: Kyurem Vs. The Sacred Swordsman - Keldeo (2012)
¥3.55 billion - Pokemon: I Choose You! (2017)
¥3.54 billion - Furious 7 (2015)
¥3.53 billion - Memories of Marnie (2014)
¥3.52 billion - Let Me Eat Your Pancreas (2017)
¥3.50 billion - Inception (2010)

Incredibles 2 nor Mission: Impossible - Fallout will ever be #1, and both films are aiming for ¥5-5.5 billion, so they'll rank pretty high at the end of the year. Incredibly enough, both of their predecessors never hit #1 either, and all four films will have similar totals.

% changes versus same-day-last week.

Note: Last Week was Obon Festival, so the week-to-week drops are going to be massive; however, the dailies themselves will still be very good since there are still two weeks left until the end of Summer Vacation.

Post Re: Japan Box Office: Weekend Actuals; Charts Updated!
The past two days have been a bit dampened, literally, by yet another typhoon making landfall in the country -- the second one in just a week. Thankfully, it'll be moving out to sea soon, so the weekend box-office shouldn't be deflated. I'm hoping that the somewhat stunted numbers over the past couple days will result in a very healthy weekend ahead.

Japan has experienced a ridiculous string of very unfortunate weather/disasters this Summer; including 20 typhoons (several making landfall), a deadly record heatwave last month, landslides and flooding, volcanic activity in the south, and even the usual earthquakes spiked...

I'll have the Weekend Forecast posted later this evening.

>Killing for the Prosecutors is aiming to debut atop the box-office on the last weekend of Summer, and looks to do so with a pretty good opening based on its Friday performance and Saturday pre-sales.

>Gintama 2 still has a shot at retaining its #1 position in its second weekend, especially since it's possible its first week may have been deflated a bit (due to the typhoons), resulting in a possible strong second weekend hold.

>Code Blue will likely overtake Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom on Sunday to become the second-biggest film of 2018, and will then set its sights on Detective Conan: Zero the Enforcer to become the #1 film of the year. I believe it will claim the 2018 yearly crown, but it can't afford any mishaps over the next few weeks.

>Incredibles 2 should reach the ¥4 billion milestone on Sunday (or be barely shy), proving that lower than expected opening weekends doesn't always spell doom. It's almost at a 10 multiplier after four weeks! Mission: Impossible - Fallout has been falling a bit behind the Incredibles sequel in recent days, and may also fall behind it over the weekend as well. I had the sixth Mission: Impossible as the favorite, if only slightly, in their very close race, but I'm not sure now. It's 50/50 as both films aim for blockbuster status -- ¥5 billion.

>Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again doesn't appear to be attracting many who turned out for the first film based on Friday and its Saturday pre-sales. Perhaps it'll improve over the weekend, but if it debuts around the weekend forecast, it's looking at a potential 50%+ decline versus the original film. I can't think of any other live-action musical sequels, so this may set a precedent.

>One Shot of the Dead continues to expand, and will be in wide release (131 locations) for the first time this weekend -- its tenth weekend of release. As the incredible WOM spreads, and more people have access to the film due to it expanding, it's impossible to know where this one is headed. Early ticket sales are suggesting an increase over 30%, but I'm going to be a little conservative.

Note: Due to a couple typhoons affecting the country this past week, and probably deflating the box-office a tad, it's possible weekend holds could end up a bit stronger than expected.

Mostly expected numbers all-around, so I'm going to take this time to talk about the film you see above that just increased over 30% in its tenth weekend of release...That film is the indie zombie-comedy film called One Cut of the Dead, directed by Shinichiro Ueda.

After opening at 1 location on an 84 seat screen in June, the film continues to surge and may have broke into the Top 5 in its tenth weekend. The film still has a lot of potential to expand further, as it only just reached wide-release this weekend by playing in 131 locations. Again, it's difficult to project where it's headed, but it seems that ¥2 billion (~$20 million) is likely at this point, at the very least.

It only cost ¥3 million ($27,000) to make, so it's going to gross over 700 times its budget, minimum. Probably over 800 times its budget.

The film is only 37 minutes (a single take), but I'm unsure if that includes any credits. I'm curious if, perhaps, Japan will select it as their Best Foreign-Language Picture entry for the Academy Awards this year if it would qualify, or if it could receive a Best Short Film nomination instead. It certainly seems like a bizarre choice, but reviews are incredible -- audience reception in particular has been amazing -- and it's been a hit at award shows internationally already, so... maybe?

Distribution rights have also been sold to China, the U.K., South Korea, Germany, and other major markets, as well.

Here's the trailer:

Summer Vacation has one week left, so Incredibles 2 will continue to build upon its lead. Mission: Impossible - Fallout will begin to chip away at its lead beginning next Monday, but I'm not sure if it'll be able to overtake it. It's going to be incredibly close.

Weekend Actuals will be posted in a bit. The Weekend Estimates were very close all-around.

>Killing for the Prosecution, the latest film from acclaimed director Masato Harada, debuted atop the last weekend of the Summer Box-Office Season. The mystery film adapted from the novel of the same name sold a solid 317,807 admissions over the weekend frame across 335 screens, and reached 446,853 admissions since opening on Friday. Overall, a good start for the film, and it should finish around the ¥2.5 billion ($20-25 million) mark.

>Gintama 2 slips to second place, but delivered a solid hold, and has set itself up for a likely ¥3-3.5 billion ($30 million) performance.

>Code Blue rounds out the top 3 in its fifth-weekend of release, and exceeded 6 million admissions as well. It's now the second biggest film of 2018, and is likely to outgross and sell more tickets than Detective Conan: Zero the Enforcer (¥8.69 billion) to become the #1 film of 2018. The last time a domestic live-action film topped the yearly box-office was in 2012 -- Umizaru: Brave Hearts. Expect a total north of ¥9 billion ($80 million+) and over 7 million admissions.

>Incredibles 2 continues its excellent performance, exceeding the ¥4 billion milestone over its fourth-weekend of release. It still has one week of Summer Vacation left to boost its box-office, so unless it collapses when school starts back, it should comfortably exceed the ¥5 billion ($45 million) blockbuster milestone and finish with a similar total as its predecessor (¥5.26 billion).

>Mission: Impossible - Fallout finishes off the top 5 in its fourth-weekend of release, and is right on the cusp of exceed the ¥4 billion milestone. It's trailing Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation by 2.9% after four weeks, but with an extra week in August, it should be just about even with it next week. Every film in the Mission: Impossible franchise has achieved blockbuster-status (¥5 billion), and the sixth-entry should do the same once again -- although much closer than anticipated following its opening weekend.

>One Cut of the Dead keeps on doing its thing, once again seeing a double digit increase following another expansion. The indie-zombie flick has grossed 434 times its budget now. As I mentioned, it's really impossible to project where it's heading given it can still expand and demand/buzz remains very high. A total over ¥2 billion ($20 million) is at least guaranteed.

>Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again, strangely, hasn't had its weekend or 3-day total released yet. This is very unusual since it's a wide-release that definitely grossed over ¥100 million ($1 million), that also ranked in the top 10. It did only rank in seventh place. The figure above remains an estimate, and I'll update it when its actual is finally released.
