Whoa!!!! $18.7 million in just four days. Awesome. It's bound to beat the first film, no? Seems a given to me. What's the word-of-mouth like? Reviews? Competition for the next 6 weeks?

In USD, it'll probably beat the first film. I don't think it'll quite get there in JPY or admissions, but it'll be pretty close. WOM seems solid, averaging audience ratings of 3.5/5.

Competition over the next 6 weeks is the problem. Mid-July to mid-August is the strongest six week period at the box-office in Japan, so it's always stacked with big films and many small films. Since Jurassic World 2 opened so high, it'll be able to survive the upcoming competition, but they'll definitely cut into it a bit.

There are 17 wide releases in the next five weeks (most in the next four weeks), and among them include potential/likely blockbusters: Mirai of the Future (Hosoda's new film), Code Blue (big domestic live-action film), Incredibles 2, Mission: Impossible - Fallout, and Gintama 2. And there are many other films like a new Kamen Rider, the My Hero Academia film, Ocean's 8, and more that will perform well.

Does the fact that it's a foreign blockbuster help it in terms of upcoming competition being mainly Japanese? Like, is it sort of protected, to a degree...

I know Fallout and Incredibles 2 are opening, but let's say they weren't, and instead two other big Japanese films were opening, would JW2 have a better few weeks? Does it make sense what I am trying to gauge?

Yeah, because theaters have to give extra screens to foreign releases due to dubbed/subbed versions (most foreign blockbusters receive a dub cast and release), and the various premium formats (3D/4D, IMAX, etc.) that they're often released in. The vast majority of Japanese films are traditional format releases, so they don't affect the screen/showtime counts of foreign films as much.

Jurassic World 2 isn't going to collapse or anything -- competition in Japan very rarely harms a film, rather, it can sometimes help by bringing more people to the cinemas (spillover effect). It just won't be able to develop the same kind of legs as the first film by opening at the beginning of the Summer Box-Office Season rather than in the middle (like the first film did).

The Amazing Spider-Man with 1,092 screens.

It was promoted extensively with Japan receiving the film before any other country, was a very known property, and was released while 3D was still very popular.

Post Re: Japan Box Office: Mamoru Hosoda History
Acclaimed director Mamoru Hosoda's latest release, Mirai of the Future, opens this weekend, so here's a look at his box-office history, along with some information about the man that many have considered Hayao Miyazaki's successor in the market:

Mamoru Hosoda's Box-Office History:

Opening Weekends:
¥667.0 million ($5.5 million) / 494,170 - The Boy and the Beast (2015)
¥365.1 million ($4.6 million) / 276,326 - Wolf Children (2012)
¥127.5 million ($1.3 million) / 109,200 - Summer Wars (2009)
Unavailable - The Girl Who Leapt Through Time (2006)
¥174.7 million ($1.7 million) / 163,000 - One Piece: One Piece: Baron Omatsuri and the Secret Island (2005)
Unavailable - Digimon the Movie (2000)

Totals:
¥5.85 billion ($47.7 million) / 4.58 million - The Boy and the Beast (2015)
¥4.22 billion ($53.9 million) / 3.42 million - Wolf Children (2012)
¥1.65 billion ($19.8 million) / 1.26 million - Summer Wars (2009)
¥260 million ($2.2 million) / 200,000 - The Girl Who Leapt Through Time (2006)
¥1.20 billion ($11.1 million) / 1.00 million - One Piece: Baron Omatsuri and the Secret Island (2005)
¥2.16 billion ($20.0 million) / 1.82 million - Digimon the Movie (2000)

After directing a couple anime films (Digimon, One Piece) for Toei Animation -- where he worked as an animator -- Mamoru Hosoda was hired by Madhouse Inc. in 2005 where they later released his first original film, The Girl Who Leapt Through Time, in 2006. He would win his first Best Animated Film Award at the Japan Academy Prize Ceremony for the film.

Following the critical praise and international release of The Girl Who Leapt Through Time, Warner Bros. would then pick up Hosoda's next film, Summer Wars, which delivered solid box-office results in near-limited release, and it, too, would go on to win the Best Animated Film Award at the Japan Academy Prize Ceremony. Summer Wars became an internationally popular animated film, and now having two Best Animated Film Awards to his name, Hosoda would found his own animation studio in 2011 -- Studio Chizu.

Wolf Children would become Hosoda's first film released by his own studio, as well as the first film that was released via Japan's most-successful distributor -- Toho. And thanks to the marketing power of Toho, Wolf Children became Hosoda's widest release by a considerable margin, and would go on to become his box-office break-through. He'd also win his third Best Animated Film Award for the critically-acclaimed film.

Following the major success of Wolf Children, Hosoda and Studio Chizu quickly became widely considered Hayao Miyazaki's and Studio Ghibli's likely successors in the market following Miyazaki's "retirement" and Ghibli closing their film development department in 2014.

The Boy and the Beast would be next for Hosoda and Studio Chizu, and after becoming a household name, winning three-consecutive Best Animated Film Awards, and being eyed as Hayao Miyazaki's successor, there was a lot of interest, and hype, surrounding the new film. It would end up delivering at the box-office, opening almost twice as high as his previous film, and would become his first blockbuster (¥5 billion). It would also later win the Best Animated Film Award at the Japan Academy Prize Ceremony, giving Hosoda his fourth win in the category and tying Miyazaki's record.

The future looks strong for Mamoru Hosoda and Studio Chizu with today's release of Mirai of the Future. Synopsis: The birth of a sibling is a joyous time for many, but not for Kun. Four years old and spoiled rotten, he sees baby sister Mirai as competition for his parents’ love. Amidst the luscious leaves of a mysterious garden, a magical encounter with his little sister from the future will send the siblings on an intimate journey through time and space, to confront the boy’s uncertain feelings and prepare him to be the big brother he needs to be.

Mamoru Hosoda's latest received its World Premiere at Cannes earlier this year -- the first Japanese animated film to ever receive the honor -- and received many positive reviews (100% on RT, currently). The first domestic response to the film will be on display this weekend at the box-office.

>Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom is going to enjoy a strong second weekend atop the box-office, following its incredible debut weekend. The film will either be just shy, or slightly above the ¥4 billion milestone after just ten days in release. It's still on course to exceed the ¥8 billion ($70 million) milestone, and is likely to hit ¥9 billion ($80 million) as well.

>Mirai of the Future has to settle for second place, and it'll also come in well-below the debut of director Mamoru Hosoda's previous film, The Boy and the Beast. Based on its pre-sales, it's going to have a similar debut as Hosoda's own Wolf Children which opened on this exact day in 2012. If it does have a similar debut as Wolf Children, that'll probably be a bit less than Toho and Studio Chizu would have liked considering The Boy and the Beast's opening; however, legs for mid-late July animated films are often great/excellent, and it would still likely reach a total of ¥3-4 billion ($30-35 million+).

>Pokemon: Everyone's Story should maintain a similar trajectory as last year's film, and the film franchise has always experienced a harsh second weekend decline before stabilizing going into August. It's still on track for ¥3-3.5 billion ($30 million+).

>Bleach, the live-action adaptation of the popular 2000's manga/anime, is going to bomb. It certainly wasn't expected to do very well, but failing to match last year's live-action adaptations Fullmetal Alchemist and Tokyo Ghoul is very disappointing. This film in particular came way too late considering the anime concluded in 2012, while the manga ended in 2016. And the general popularity of the once hit property -- which sold over 90 million copies in Japan, 120 million worldwide -- declined a solid 10 years ago.

>Oh yeah, and... Detective Conan: Zero the Enforcer is likely to achieve its fifteenth-consecutive week in the Top 10!

I made a miscalculation regarding JW2's cumulative total on Friday (seen above), adding its Monday gross twice, so that's been corrected in the Weekend Estimates.

>Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom enjoys a strong second weekend atop the box-office, following its incredible debut weekend. However, due to the release date difference between it and Jurassic World, the sequel has now fallen behind it by about 20% despite the much larger opening. You can compare the two films in the Biggest Second Weekends post that's coming up soon.

It's still on course to reach the ¥8 billion ($70 million) milestone, though, and could still reach ¥9 billion ($80 million) if it benefits enough from Obon Festival next month.

>Mirai of the Future settles for second place, coming in slightly above director Mamoru Hosoda's Wolf Children based on estimates. It does, however, come in well-below the debut of Hosoda's last film, The Boy and the Beast, by over 40%, but I'm sure if this is a good comparison given Mirai isn't as ambitious and is less-fantastical in its more family-oriented story.

Legs for animated films released in mid-late July are often great due to Summer Vacation and the upcoming holiday period, so Mirai should be good for at least ¥3 billion ($25-30 million), but could go as high as ¥4 billion ($35 million).

>Pokemon: Everyone's Story sees the typical ~50% decline in its second weekend that the franchise consistently experiences. It'll rebound as we get deeper into Summer, and is still on track for ¥3-3.5 billion ($30 million+).

>Bleach, the live-action adaptation of the popular 2000's manga/anime, bombs as expected. It certainly wasn't expected to do very well, but opening to about half of what the live-action adaptations Fullmetal Alchemist and Tokyo Ghoul did last year is very disappointing. Simply put, this film came out way too late.

>Detective Conan: Zero the Enforcer will achieve its fifteenth-consecutive week in the Top 10! It's benefited a lot in the past two weeks from the lack of openers -- and a film earning less than ¥20 million in the tenth place position is very low, especially for this time of year -- but a fifteenth weekend in the Top 10 is still a fifteenth weekend in the Top 10 and is incredibly impressive, regardless. July usually has a few more wide openers then has been seen this year, with studios stacking early-mid August more than usual this time.

10 (08) ¥16,021,200 ($144,000), -42%, ¥8,632,311,900 ($78.9 million), Detective Conan: Zero the Enforcer (Toho) WK15

>Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom enjoys a strong second weekend atop the box-office, selling an additional 486,000 admissions over its second weekend, bringing its 10-day admissions above 2.4 million. It has fallen behind its predecessor, despite the much larger debut, but the difference in release dates makes it very difficult to accurately compare the two films on any level, really.

Fallen Kingdom is doing very, very well, though, and is on track to reach the ¥8 billion ($70 million) milestone, and if the boost it receives from Obon Festival in three weeks is big enough, it could approach the ¥9 billion ($80 million) milestone.

>Mirai of the Future, the latest animated-family adventure from acclaimed director Mamoru Hosoda, settles for second place, selling a solid 295,828 admissions over the weekend frame across 456 screens, and an impressive 378,022 admissions since Friday. Its opening is 10% higher than Hosoda's Wolf Children which opened on this exact weekend 6 years ago, but did trail his previous film, The Boy and the Beast, by 40% (or 24% if Friday is taken into consideration).

Overall, this is a good debut -- comparable to most other high-profile original anime films (excluding Miyazaki films) -- but not the breakout that may have been possible thanks to Hosoda and Studio Chizu's growing popularity. Legs this time of year are consistently strong for original animated films, so expect a total perhaps around ¥3.5 billion ($30 million+), but ¥4 billion ($35 million) is doable, as well.

>Pokemon: Everyone's Story ends up falling slightly higher than the average Pokemon film in its second weekend, but its two-week total is only about 5% behind last year's film . It'll likely rebound as we get deeper into Summer, as the franchise typically does, and is still on track for ¥3-3.5 billion ($30 million+).

>Bleach, the live-action adaptation of the popular 2000's manga/anime, bombs as expected, only selling 99,122 admissions over the weekend frame on 329 screens, and 132,525 admissions since Friday. It certainly wasn't expected to do very well, and it came in a bit above estimates, but opening to about half of what the live-action adaptations Fullmetal Alchemist and Tokyo Ghoul did last year is very disappointing. Simply put, this film came out way too late and isn't going to reach the ¥1 billion ($10 million) milestone.

>Detective Conan: Zero the Enforcer achieved its fifteenth-consecutive week in the Top 10! It's benefited a lot in the past two weeks from the lack of openers -- and a film earning less than ¥20 million in the tenth place position is very low, especially for this time of year -- but a fifteenth weekend in the Top 10 is still a fifteenth weekend in the Top 10, and is incredibly impressive, regardless.

The Summer Box-Office, so far, has been a little lackluster, but it's primarily due to studios putting more films in August this year. The first two weekends of August are very crowded, and contain several potential blockbuster releases, so expect a much more exciting Top 10 in a few weeks.

So it could be the highest-grossing film of the year? How much more do you expect Enforcer to get?

Detective Conan: Zero the Enforcer will probably reach, maybe just exceed, ¥8.7 billion ($79.5 million) before leaving theaters. It's still in over 300 theaters (314) in its fifteenth week, think of this as a film playing in ~3,500 theaters in the U.S., and it's only gradually losing theaters between now and the end of August, so it'll still be playing in wide/very wide release for quite a while still.

Or... maybe it can get closer ¥8.8 billion ($80 million+) because we're nearing the middle of Summer now, and it's going to see week-to-week daily increases (e.g. this Tuesday it was up 37% versus last Tuesday). It will also be going into Obon Festival (mid-August) while still playing wide, and that'll likely give it a noticeable boost

It's really 50/50 whether or not Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom will beat it. Unless it experiences abnormal holds in the coming weeks, good or bad, I don't think we'll know until late-August once Summer Vacation and Obon Festival are over.

It's very exciting having a photo-finish type race. I am rooting for Fallen Kingdom, but there's also something sweet about a Japanese film topping the year for Japan.
