Corpse, what kind of legs are you predicting for Jurassic World 2?

Also, can Solo still reach ¥3 billion?

Solo: A Star Wars Story is proving to be frontloaded, which is especially concerning now that we've reached the Summer box-office that has over a dozen wide releases competing for screens and showtimes over the next 4-6 weeks.

I doubt it comes near ¥3 billion, now, and see it settling around ¥2.5 billion.

Well, Jurassic World was a Wednesday opener, so the sequel beating it over the weekend frame isn't too surprising. It'll still be impressive, though, if it manages to do so.

And regarding its legs and final gross... I doubt it matches the first film's total. The first film developed excellent legs by opening at the start of Obon Festival (early/mid-August) in a year without any major July holdover(s), and the sequel has to hold off a lot of upcoming competition -- including some big films in the beginning of August -- before reaching the strongest week of the year in four weeks.

Assuming it has the normal legs of a typical mid-July blockbuster, and opens around the weekend forecast, then it should be good for ¥7-8 billion ($65-75 million), pretty easily allowing Japan to be its second best intl. market behind China.

Yes! Might even help to push it over Bland Panther's worldwide gross to be #2 for the year. It's still got a lot of work to do with those holdover markets, but I haven't checked to see if it's likely. I just know that BP is making nothing now, and JW2 is only $270 million behind (with all the weekdays not counted from last week). So let's say it makes $70m from Japan, it needs another $200m from holdover markets to out-gross BP. It could still make another $60m from the US, but another $140m from all other markets is a bit much, I guess. But here's hoping.

Thanks, Corpse. It looks like JW2 might end up pretty close to the first film in USD at least.

At best, JW2 might be able to challenge Frozen's worldwide total. Black Panther and even $1.3 billion are out of reach in my opinion. OS holdovers contributed $30 million last weekend, so it probably has around the same amount left there as in the domestic run. JW2 should still end up Universal's 3rd highest grosser worldwide under the first JW and F7 and just above F8.

Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom had a very strong Saturday, possibly strong enough to allow it to debut above the ¥1 billion mark over the weekend frame. I'll post how it compared to every other ¥1 billion+ opener since 2015 here soon.

Pokemon: Everyone's Story was nearly on par (down just 1%) versus last year's film. This is very encouraging, and perhaps a sign that last year's reboot of the Pokemon film franchise may have continued success.

It's interesting how consistently strong the Jurassic Park/World franchise is outside JP3. It reminds me of Star Wars (the main Episodes) or Pirates of the Caribbean in that regard. Is it because of nostalgia or something else that makes these particular live-action franchises so popular?

No, it should still be behind Detective Conan: Zero the Enforcer by a bit. Big live-action films like Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom don't perform as well as animated films in rural regions.

That said, Jurassic World 2 had a massive Sunday, increasing almost 20% over Saturday. In fact, it appears to have achieved the biggest Sunday for a foreign/Hollywood film since Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 2 in 2011.

I'll have numbers up soon.

I'm sure nostalgia plays a role, but it has to be more than that because other blockbuster Hollywood franchises like Terminator have died off dramatically. I think it's just the familiarity of the franchises, and the returning character(s) (dinos in Jurassic World's case) and continuous storyline.

Post Re: Japan Box Office: Umi no Hi WKND '18 (Dinos vs. Pokemon)
Ridiculously huge for Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, thanks to a massive Sunday. Its weekend admissions from just the Usual Locations (two-thirds of the market) alone beat the overall weekend admissions of its predecessor (granted, the first film was a Wednesday opener).

The weekend admissions, while higher than the past two Star Wars and last Pirates film, are still a little too close to them for me to declare Jurassic World 2 as the biggest foreign/Hollywood opener since Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 2 in 2011, but it's going to be pretty close!

I'm going to wait until tomorrow to post Weekend Estimates since Monday is Umi no Hi (Ocean Day), and will be nearly as big as Saturday/Sunday.

I will, however, post an estimate for Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, along with how it ranks among the biggest opening weekends over the past decade.

Amazing for Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom. I guess it will win the summer now and could maybe even compete with Detective Conan: Zero the Enforcer for the yearly crown.

As stated, absolutely huge for Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom. It may have exceeded the ¥2 billion milestone after a mere four days in release, which would tie 2011's Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 2 and 2014's Yo-Kai Watch: It's the Secret of Birth, Nyan! as the fastest films reach the mark in the past ten years. Jurassic World 2 won't have nearly as strong of legs as its predecessor due to the release date difference, but with such an explosive debut, it'll rival the original's total with a likely gross of ¥8 billion ($70 million+), and even ¥9 billion ($80 million+) is doable. It may have the Summer Crown locked up already, even though Summer just began, and it'll be a serious contender to win the Yearly Crown as well.

Pokemon: Everyone's Story performed very well, and pretty much matched (possibly beat) last year's film reboot of the long-running animated franchise. A total between ¥3-3.5 billion ($30 million+) is likely. This is very encouraging because a couple years back, the franchise was in a downward spiral. The new strategy of releasing original Pokemon films that aren't apart of the TV anime definitely appears to have brought back a lot of fans to the theaters.

Solo: A Star Wars Story, thankfully, held better than it really should have this weekend (severe screen/showtime & premium format cuts), and while it's still not performing particularly well, a total above ¥2.5 billion (~$25 million) is likely.

Shoplifters continues its incredible run, and is going to exceed the ¥4 billion milestone very soon. Hirokazu Kore-eda's hit is now targeting a total over ¥4.5 billion ($40 million+).

Detective Conan: Zero the Enforcer continues to remain in the Top 10, now achieving a remarkable fourteenth-consecutive week there! I still believe it has the advantage of winning the Yearly Crown, especially now that it's still in the Top 10 with Summer beginning, but it'll be in for a close race now with Jurassic World 2.

Is Japan's yearly ranking also based on admissions ? In that case, has it ever happened that the yearly rankings differed in admissions and revenue ? Since it seems pretty obvious that if JW2 takes the yearly crown, it will only do so in revenue.

By the way thanks for the PM with the extra info.

Love its over-performance. Puts it in a better position to beat BP's worldwide tally.

Very similar situation to 2015 it seems, where #1 and #2 of the year will be a close race between a Jurassic World film and an animated film.

Eiren posts the Yearly Rankings by revenue.

Surprisingly, it has happened only once, in 2015, and maybe in 1982 but I don't have exact admissions for that year. And in both cases, it was a result of a December release (which is counted toward the following year).

In 2015: Jurassic World won the year in revenue, but Big Hero 6 won the year in admissions.
In 1982: Bush Man (a South African film) won the year in revenue, but it's possible that Sailor Suit and Machine Gun won the year in admissions.

1982. Now you're talking!

Feel free to post historical box office data for Japan whenever you get any. I'm very interested in 80s and 90s.

Is BUSH MAN the Japanese title for THE GODS MUST BE CRAZY?

Yes... I didn't realize it, and couldn't even confirm it until double-checking a few things.

The Japanese poster looks way different than any of the others I've seen. Strangely, Japanese sites have its English title as "Bush Man" (not The Gods Must Be Crazy) with the translated Japanese title being Miracle Man: Bush Man. And finally, it's listed with an original release date (typically a film's first year of release worldwide) of 1981 instead of 1980.

Very bizarre.

Cumulative Totals as of Monday (07/16)

>Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom kicked-off the Summer Box-Office Season on an enormous scale. The sequel to Jurassic World, and the fifth entry in the overall series, dominated the box-office, becoming the fastest film since 2011's Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 2 and 2014's Yo-Kai Watch: It's the Secret of Birth, Nyan! to reach the ¥2 billion milestone in just four days. By comparison, it took Jurassic World seven days to reach the same milestone.

Jurassic World 2 sold an incredible 833,190 admissions over the weekend frame across 1,002 screens (second highest screen count in modern history), and brought its 4-day admissions up to an astounding 1,453,273. This entry won't have nearly as strong of legs as its predecessor due to the release date difference of the two films, but even a standard performance for a blockbuster this time of year will easily get it to the ¥8 billion ($70 million) milestone, and it could certainly rival the first film with a total of ¥9 billion ($80 million), as well. It has very likely won the Summer Crown already, and will be in the running for the Yearly Crown.

Pokemon: Everyone's Story performed very well, selling 440,242 admissions over the weekend frame on 370 screens, which bested last year's reboot of the animated film franchise by 0.9%. Its 4-day admissions reached an excellent 733,488. However, it did come in slightly lower in revenue, trailing last year's film by just 3.1%. This is very encouraging because a couple years back, the franchise was in a downward spiral. A total between ¥3-3.5 billion ($30 million+) is likely. The new strategy of releasing original Pokemon films that aren't apart of the TV anime definitely appears to have brought back a lot of fans to the theaters.

Solo: A Star Wars Story did end up falling a bit harshly in its third weekend due to severe screen/showtime & premium format cuts), after all, and while it's still not performing particularly well, I believe total around ¥2.5 billion (~$25 million) is likely. Certainly not good, but respectable given its performance elsewhere.
